[ALOCHONA] Mahathir starts his own blog

Mahathir starts his own blog

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is now a blogger.
He is blogging through his website  www.chedet.com,  which is named after the pseudonym he used when he wrote articles for the newspapers. In his profile, Dr Mahathir lists himself simply as the "Prime Minister of Malaysia 1981 – 2003".

New to the Web: Screen capture of Dr Mahathir's blog taken yesterday, the day it was launched. The blog received more than 10,000 visitors by 5pm Thursday.

Dr Mahathir wrote that the site was dedicated to publishing his writings as and when he was able to pen his thoughts and opinions. He added that interested parties, including the media, were allowed to reproduce or quote materials published in his site but to credit them to chedet.com.

Comments and feedbacks accompanied by names or pseudonyms were welcome, while anonymous ones and those containing profanities and obscenities would be rejected, he wrote.

His first article, posted at 1.27am yesterday, was on the appointment of judges, in which he posed a few questions on the setup of the proposed commission on the appointment of judges, and how recommendations would be made.

Dr Mahathir wrote that it would be interesting to know the full details of the procedures especially with regard to the role of the Prime Minister in the appointment of judges.
He pointed out that any changes to the appointment of judges required the Constitution to be amended and, as the Government did not have two-thirds majority in Parliament, it needed votes from the Opposition.

"Is the Government proposing to work with the Opposition on these issues, and so display its weakness? Will there be a quid pro quo, a bargain with the Opposition? It would be interesting to see how the PM proposes to deal with this," he wrote.

Dr Mahathir's blog received more than 10,000 visitors by 5pm yesterday. Many commentators welcomed the former prime minister to the blogosphere and said they had been waiting for him to start blogging.

Many said they were eager to hear his thoughts on various issues and welcomed the fact that they could interact with him through the blog. Some who left comments on his first posting disagreed that it would be a weakness on part of the Government to work with the Opposition to reform the judiciary. They felt that national interest should prevail over partisan politics.

One commentator also asked Dr Mahathir if he thought that the ex-gratia payment for the judges affected in the 1988 judicial crisis was tantamount to contempt of court.

[mukto-mona] Saffron Techies - Sanjana on IT shakhas

"IT milans are shakhas or camps organised for IT and IT-enabled service professionals, by the RSS, the right-wing Hindu fundamentalist organisation. Part of the extended Sangh Parivar, IT milans signal the RSS' intention "to organise IT workers across the country towards contributing to the larger agenda of building a Hindu Rashtra."
A concept that has been in the making for six years, IT milans have started to appear with considerable speed in the last three years. They now exist in several cities across India with significant IT activities, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Faridabad and Kolkata. In Bengaluru alone, there are 46 IT milans located in different residential areas. IT milan members work with leading companies such as Infosys, Tata Consulting Services, Cognizant Technologies, Siemens and Kyocera"

IT'S 8AM on a Sunday morning. At a public ground in Sahakarnagar, Bengaluru, swayamsevaks (volunteers) from the RSS file out, their shakha (meeting) concluded. Queries about something called an Information Technology (IT) milan which is to be held in the same ground in half an hour are answered enthusiastically. "They will assemble here on time. They are also part of our Sangh and discipline is very important," says a swayamsevak who only identifies himself as Arun from Vasanthappa Block, RT Nagar, (a colony in North Bengaluru). Before he leaves, he gives me the phone numbers of four swayamsevaks living near my house who will put me in touch with the Rashtra Sevika Samiti, the women's wing of the RSS — IT milans are only for men. Arun's suggestion notwithstanding, I was never turned away from milans. Most milan members were willing to accommodate questions about their work and activities. I was, after all, a potential member — for the Sevika Samiti, if not for the milan.
IT milans are shakhas or camps organised for IT and IT-enabled service professionals, by the RSS, the right-wing Hindu fundamentalist organisation.
IT milan members work with leading companies such as Infosys, Tata Consulting Services, Cognizant Technologies, Siemens and Kyocera. In terms of the internal organisational structure of milans in Bengaluru, every milan has a mukhyashikshak (principal teacher) and a karyavaha (organiser); the milans are then organised into 16 valays (local area organisations), with a valay karyavaha (in-charge) and four khands (sections). An RSS full-timer, M Suresh Nayak, is in charge of overseeing all IT milans in Bengaluru and ensuring that the milans' membership drive remains on full throttle.
While not all milan members are swayamsevaks with years of experience and engagement with the RSS ideology, key organisational roles are assigned to only those with over 10 years of experience within the Sangh. Many, like Manoj Desai, the valay karyavaha of Amruthanagar, who oversees the functioning of two milans in his area, have been with the RSS since their childhood. Says Desai, "IT milans have been conceptualised keeping in mind busy IT professionals who cannot attend daily RSS shakhas — milans take place on Sunday mornings for an hour, usually between 8 and 9am in different areas." Another departure from the daily RSS shakha is the relaxed dress code — milan members are not asked to wear trademark RSS khaki shorts.
What happens in IT milans? Besides the routine RSS flag-hoisting and prayers, discussions are held every week on a topic chosen by the boudhik shikshak (ideological teacher) in the milan. After a brief presentation by the shikshak, discussions follow. In the milans I attended, discussions ranged from the disturbing collapse of Nepal as a Hindu rashtra to the real story behind Christian conversions and the attacks on churches, to JC Bose (an Indian scientist who is considered to be the father of wireless communication) and the need for pride in the nation's real achievers. Discussions in milans are coloured by the Sangh ideology; the email lists as well are filled with opinion pieces by Sangh ideologues such as Tarun Vijay, V Sundaram and Shreerang Godbole.
"Since they are IT professionals, there is a chance that they may not have time to focus on issues around them. Besides, it is important to grasp the real perspective on different issues. We want them to feel proud of our country and its achievements and not look at Western countries as a model," says Nirmal Kumar, mukhyashikshak at the JP Nagar milan. When I asked a mukhyashikshak at a different milan about the unequal roles assigned to men and women within marriages and why women were asked to follow their husbands, I was directed to the Sangh Parivar official website that explained the science of the caste system and marriage laws. This is how it explains the 'natural' subordination of women:
"Birth is not accidental. Depending upon the mood and thought level of the husband at the time of conception, souls in the range of similar thought-frequency enter into the sperm cells. That's the moment when each of the sperm cells become alive, with one soul each. (This is like a radio system. We hear the frequency we tune to.)... Then all of them rush towards the ovum to conceive. ....But out of millions only one gets the chance!! This depends upon the female. The woman's psychosomatic body will allow only that sperm soul to conceive which matches the impression she has of her husband on her psychosomatic makeup. That is why for good progeny the wife should be tuned to her husband, coloured by her husband, she should have adherence to her husband."
BESIDES IDEOLOGICAL indoctrination and integration into the Sangh Parivar, IT milans also provide the Sangh people and resources to channel into regular activities. A special door-to-door fundraising drive held in Bengaluru over a month in 2007 reportedly raised Rs 20 lakh for the Vanavasi Kalyan Kendra, a Sangh organisation that deals with "tribal welfare activities across India." This year as well, a similar drive will be held to raise funds for a different Sangh organisation or activity. "We don't just collect money, we ensure that we give donors information about the cause. That way, more people hear about the great social work that is happening across India. Unlike missionary NGOs, we don't tell the press about the work done by the RSS. We avoid publicity and try to reach ordinary people directly," says Debashish, a swayamsevak in the Amruthanagar milan. Debashish, who originally comes from Orissa and has been with the Sangh since his childhood, talks in detail about the mission that used to be run by Graham Staines in Orissa. "Though there are hardly 60 people in that leper camp, look at the publicity they got," he said, coming dangerously close to contradicting the proposition that Staines was burnt alive on charges of converting thousands to Christianity.

For now, IT milans in Bengaluru are working towards a Sanskrit camp that will be held in the month of November – an occasion that they hope will bring together around 2,000 people. Says Anant, another IT milan member, "We are still growing, there are a lot of people that we need to connect within IT orga - nisations in Bengaluru. The process may be slow since it is developed on personto- person contacts, but I feel we are on the right track. Just see how much we will have grown two years from now."•

[ALOCHONA] Pakistan: A forced marriage to the IMF?

Pakistan: A forced marriage to the IMF?

By M Ilyas Khan
BBC News, Karachi

A poor family cooking in Rawalpindi
The poorest have been hit hardest by food inflation

There was great hope earlier this year that Pakistan would enter an era of peace and plenty following the return of democracy.
There is now a realisation that peace and plenty require strict discipline, careful planning and loads of hard work.

Until now, these benchmarks of success have been in short supply.
The military is yet to deal a decisive blow to the Islamist militants who control large swathes of territory on the country's western border with Afghanistan.
The new civilian government has used up more than half of the country's meagre foreign exchange reserves without enhancing its own capacity to generate income.

After the elections in February the country had pinned hopes on a "democracy dividend" from its Western allies in the "war on terror".
It is now contemplating an unpopular bailout by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which is likely to cut growth, worsen the employment situation and perhaps even affect the size of the government, including that of its powerful military. How has all this come about?

'Not sustainable'
Over the last few years, the Pakistani economy has grown 7-8% annually, mainly because of the resources that became available when it agreed to side with the US after the September 2001 attacks in New York and Washington..

Finance adviser Shaukat Tarin
Finance adviser Shaukat Tarin says Pakistan needs up to $5bn fast
One independent economist, Dr Asad Sayeed, estimates that nearly $70bn (£45bn) flowed into the Pakistani economy in the six years after 2001, on top of aid and assistance from Western governments and financial institutions - including $10bn from the Bush administration.

But growth mostly took place in the services sector, especially consumer financing. No significant assets were created in the industrial and agricultural sectors.

"It was not sustainable growth, and as a result economic imbalances started to re-emerge in 2006," a former finance minister, Sartaj Aziz, said in a recent television interview.

The new government took power at a time when international food prices had already started to soar, and oil prices were to hit the high mark weeks later.

By June the country's trade imbalance had become unsustainable, and the gap between its income and expenditure rose to over 6%, making local markets extremely nervous.

Twice the central bank, the State Bank of Pakistan, injected dollars from the reserves into the currency market to prevent a freefall of the Pakistani rupee.
In addition, the government had to take measures in the stock market to prevent share values from nosediving.

The government, which remained largely embroiled in political problems during its first six months in office, has now awakened to an increasingly bitter reality.

Correcting distortions
According to Shaukat Tarin, finance adviser to prime minister, the country needs $4-5bn within a month to cover its trade gap and to pay off debts on bonds and loans from multilateral creditors.
The US seems to be keen to push Pakistan towards the IMF
Sartaj Aziz
former finance minister
It needs up to $15bn over the next 24 months, he says, to stabilise the economy and correct distortions, such as a move from import-based consumer policies to those focusing on import substitution through domestic production.

To achieve this it needs sustained foreign assistance and investment in the agricultural, industrial and energy sectors. The country has plenty of long-term commitments from a group of countries called the Friends of Pakistan, but any default on international obligations in the short term may hurt its ability to attract future investment.

A US commitment to allow non-military assistance of up to $1bn per year for five years will have to wait until the US Congress has done the requisite legislation.

Commitments made by the European Union, the UK's Development Fund for International Development (Dfid), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank are also likely to take time to mature.

Meanwhile, two of Pakistan's closest allies, China and Saudi Arabia, have apparently declined to provide cash for an immediate bailout. China has expressed intent in providing relief through investment. Saudi Arabia is talking about deferring oil bills.

Reluctant
Only one short-term window remains open, that of the IMF, with its strategy of achieving stabilisation by cutting growth.
People made homeless by fighting in the district of Bajaur
Displaced by fighting: militancy has played havoc with the economy
Pakistan has been reluctant to go to the IMF because of its various conditions to reduce the size of the government, cut development expenditure, reduce or eliminate politically important subsidies etc, and also because of its strict monitoring regime.

But perhaps this is what the international community wants before it commits funds to Pakistan. "The US seems to be keen to push Pakistan towards the IMF," says Sartaj Aziz.

Analysts in Pakistan generally agree with him. "The world has moved in a concerted way to hold back their commitments until Pakistan submits to the monitoring regime of IMF," says one government economist, requesting anonymity. The reason is not hard to explain.

"Everybody is weary of a state and a nation that has become a danger to the world," he says. "While an economic bailout is essential to prevent it from passing into the hands of the militants entirely, the world would also like to see it does its best to curb militancy, which it has not done in the past despite consuming huge amounts of international assistance."

[ALOCHONA] Re: CNN Report

Dear Alochoks

Some people may be local concubines of the WB IMF NGOs etc. Some of
these people have jobs with WB IMF NGOs etc. And some of these people
just trust the WB IMF NGOs etc more than they trust their own
politicians.

It is the democratically elected governments of Bangladesh that talk
against NGOs but don't do anything to stop them.

We should turn Bnagladesh into a tourist destination for NGOs..

Do you have an NGO?
Would you like to start it up with minimum hassle?
Would you like to experiment with strategies and people with minimum
accountability?
Would you like to employ some of the best people in the land?
Would you like to pay very small bribes to get what you want?

Welcome to Bangladesh!
Where elected politcians work for you!

This is a public service advertisement.

Corruption is comparatively lower then what it was before they took
over. That in itself is a huge success given that our corruption was
sky rocketing and we have been ranked the most corrupt country
multiple years in a row. But, have they faced pitfalls in the way of
people wanting to better their situations? Yes! Did politicians and

their selfish agendas hidden in the guise of patriotism and concerns

will never realize the type of success Bangladesh is capable of

Bangladesh. The title of the program is "Bangladesh: A Drowning

understand that the title is chosen to undermine and defame
Bangladesh in the world arena. Few days back they covered Bihar's

[mukto-mona] Obama and Marxism is mentioned in the same breath!

A week before presidential election, Obama and Marxism is mentioned in the same breath

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Unless you've been away from this world, the news that Obama might receive 270 Electoral College votes has not reached you.  The Democrats are beaming with joy and many Republicans are already fretting over the dreadful news that the Congress will be dominated by the Democrats at long last.

However, this ominous news is yet to demoralize Senator McCain.  He calls himself an underdog candidate and he is telling his supporters that he will win the election coming from behind.  The trouble is that wherever Obama goes for political rally, 100,000 people or more come to listen to him.  On the contrary, McCain campaign cannot gather more than 10,000 to 15,000 enthusiastic supporters.

Now that it is made abundantly clear by a myriad of editorial write-ups and pollsters' data, Obama is poised to win the election.  The news of a black man about to clinch victory is not seating well in many parts of the world.  Many Europeans are very puzzled about it and so are many Asian folks.  To outsiders America is still a predominantly Whiteman's country.  How come they could elect a person of color?  Can you imagine an Asian being elected as the Prime Minister in Great Britain?  No way!  However, America is very different nation.  If Obama is elected to the highest office in America, this great nation may come to terms with its racial past.

Senator McCain knows that he has a very steep hill to cross to defeat Obama who is up by 5-10% in polls taken by many organizations.  His campaign now realizes that on issue it will be very difficult to compete with Obama; therefore, McCain camp has decided to go very negative on Obama.  To undermine him as a candidate, McCain campaign has unleashed vicious attack on the Democratic candidate.

After the third and final debate held in Belmont College, Nashville, Tennessee, in which Obama held his ground and the debate ended in a draw, McCain had popularized a person who he called "Joe the Plumber."  Now, "Joe the Plumber" is not a fictitious person.  While in his stumps in northwestern Ohio, Obama met this voter ("Joe") who said to the Democratic candidate that he will not be able to buy a plumbing business because of Obama's tax plan, which would punish him heavily.  Obama told him that if he earns over $ 250,000 annually, only then he would pay more tax.  Obama explained that for the greater good of the nation, the wealth needs to be spread in all parts of the society.  To this "Joe the Plumber" said that it is socialism to him.

In the third debate Senator McCain made "Joe the Plumber" the real hero.  He scared the TV viewers nationally by saying that Obama's tax plan would require most Americans to pay more taxes.

A week before the election, the McCain campaign had gone a full tilt on characterizing Obama a socialist par excellence.  McCain's running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, went ballistic on Obama calling him of all things a wealth spreader.  To republicans, it is a sinful act to take money (tax) from the wealthy and redistribute it to the needy and poor.  But when I heard it in news that one anchorwoman in Florida by the name Barbara West asking Senator Biden in a television interview the question – "How is Barack Obama not being a Marxist if he intends to spread the wealth around?"  Biden was shocked to hear such question coming from an anchorperson.  Biden shot back, "Are you joking?"  In Ms. West's defense, her employer said that she asked McCain some tough question.

The McCain campaign is trying to label Obama as a socialist because the senator from Illinois had said that by taxing the rich people to pay their fair share the wealth will be redistributed.  This assertion is anathematic to hardcore conservatives.  Many Americans abhor the concept of socialism.  Senator McCain is using the phrase "redistributing the wealth" in the same breath when he talks about his rival, Senator Obama.  The idea is to inject fear among voters.  Since Obama's message on deteriorating economy has struck a chord with the voters, McCain realizes that he cannot win in this election.  Therefore, the Republican camp has waged an all out war against Obama.  The McCain camp thinks a seed of distrust could be sown against Obama if Obama is labeled as socialist, or better yet a Marxist or communist.

The electoral map is looking ever so friendly to Senator Obama.  If the next 7 days could go past without any international event, the race could become tight but the Democrats could rejoice in the evening of November 4, 2008.  Many analysts think that Obama may receive 320-350 electoral votes when he only needs 270 to come out victorious.  The way the election is shaping up, the tossup states may go for Obama and if that happens, the election will be a blow up for the Democrats.

In the meantime, McCain's surrogates will tell the media that what looks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.  In their eyes Obama is a wealth redistributor, which means he is a socialist or worse yet, a hardcore Marxist.  Karl Marx may be rolling in his grave hearing the allusion made by McCain camp.

[mukto-mona] News No. 161/2008/ Registration of CHT regional parties with EC uncertain

Registration of CHT regional parties with EC uncertain

chtnews.com
News No. 161/2008, October 27, 2008

THE hope for the two regional political parties of the Chittagong Hill Tracts to participate in the upcoming elections following the Election Commission's registration process has come to an end, writes Fazle Elahi in the Suprabhat Bangladesh, a Bengali daily published from Chittagong.

In the news article published today, 27 October, Mr. Elahi attributed this fate of the CHT regional parties to the absence of provision for registration of any regional political party in the EC-announced registration process.

"Yet, the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) and Parbattya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) have applied for registration with the EC," he said and added that the Commission has yet to make any comments about their application.

"The complication with regard to registration has led to resentment among the leaders and workers of these two parties." he said.

The report said Ujjal Smriti Chakma, a central committee member of the UPDF, had admitted that his party has applied for registration and quoted him as saying "we have applied after fulfilling all the necessary conditions, but if the EC refuses to register us, then that would be a grave mistake on its part."

"Mr. Chakma said the EC has not made any specific provision for the registration of the regional parties, and added that the EC is making a mistake similar to the one made by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman." Mr. Elahi's report said.

"He went on to warn the EC, saying the EC must bear the responsibility if any untoward consequences result in the future because of their mistakes. This is a deep conspiracy to keep the Jumma people away from democratic process." the report further said.

The report said the CHT people are worried about the fallout of a possible denial of the EC to register the two powerful regional political parties -- UPDF and JSS. "This has become a subject of discussion everywhere in CHT." it added.

The reporter said he had contacted couple of JSS leaders for comments but they declined, saying they had instruction not to say anything about it.

The report also said that the so-called Sama Adhikar Andolon, a platform of a section of the Bengali settlers in CHT, has not applied for registration because they do not consider their organisation to be a political one.

[mukto-mona] Re: Prof I K Shukla is no more

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50409

The passing away of the erudite professor is indeed shocking news to
me. Professor Shukla was a scholarly human being who wrote scores of
articles on the rise of Hindutva in India. He possessed an
analytical mind. To honor Professor Shukla we should create a page
for him and include articles that he published in Mukto-mona.
Occasionally, he would send e-mail to me with his words of
encouragement. I was fortunate enough to have discourse with him.
It is truly a loss for secularists' movement. This orb of ours needs
many Professor Shuklas to rid this world of religious hatred and
bigotry. Is it possible to post his biography?

Re: [mukto-mona] To Mr S A Hannan

Respected members,

Assalamu Alaikum.I can just say , in reply to the letter below,   I have never said that"  the Islamists are
justified to attempt to conquer the land remaining under the control of
those who don't believe in Islam. "

On the contrary my position  ( any one can see my written books and articles through google )is that all agreements reached bilaterally and multilaterally among states must be respected, the UN charter  should be respected, there can not be any agreession on any other state because Muslims have agreed on these agreements and God says that agreements must be respected ( Maida-1 and some other verses).Any violation is violatiom and not norm.

Your point is understood. As you consider the whole world as a piece of
holy land, and as Islam is the chosen religion of God, the Islamists are
justified to attempt to conquer the land remaining under the control of
those who don't believe in Islam. Such point of view can only lead to
annihilation of your faith and you. Let your destiny guide you to oblivion.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Jamaat recognises Liberation War

Mr. Jamil Ahmed,

Don't you think there are some prerequisites for healing process to begin?  At a minimum, the perpetrators should seek apology and show remorse for their crimes on their own, not under pressure (now we know Jamaat can accept or abandon anything under pressure).  After that, whether they are sincere about their guilt should be reflected upon their actions.  So far the 1971 war criminals didn't do anything to justify their inclusion in the society.  Not only that, they are working against the spirit of liberation of Bangladesh.  Why wouldn't they?  They have the royal blessings of the Saudis, Kuwaitis, Qataris and USA.  They worked hard during their regime with BNP to distort the history of the country and when the current CTG published new textbooks, they protested the facts of the war.  This cannot be tolerated.  If Japan and Germany say to the victims of the Second World War, "We will only give you aid or normalize relations with you if you forget all the wrongs that we committed during Second World War unconditionally," how do you think the rest of the world would react?  Fortunately, Japan and Germany are part of the civilized world and they made necessary amends for their crimes.  Few of Jamaati audacious remarks can be recalled:

"ekattore bhul kori nai,"  Golam Ajam.

"There are no war criminals in Bangladesh," Ali Ahsan Mujahid.

Believe it or not, it is not us carrying baggage, it is indeed the ones you are making case here are carrying heavy and huge baggage.  Tell them or beg them to drop those.  The general public of Bangladesh is ready to move on.  But are you guys ready? I am sorry by you I mean the ones you want to include in the society right now unconditionally.

Regards

Mohammad Musa Sarkar

Should we comfortably believe that they will stop their agenda around the credo of "Allah is the establisher of the Nation of Religion?" Of course not. The whole thing is totally farcical. That credo or pretense allows them to break all law and order of the land deeming them to be merely "man made." Their illegal actions are only answerable to Allah. And they want to contest the election to become lawmakers! This BS in the name of Islam has nothing to do with being genuinely religious. It is pure politics.

>         They are riding on the wave of another notion that has become popular in the West but, beneath the surface, utterly meaningless and misleading. That is the notion of "religious extremism."
>
>          Please friends! Think about it. There is no such thing as "religious extremism." All manner of actions and activities that are labeled as such are political in nature from the beginning of civilization. Therefore, it irks me to no end when Jamaat calls attention to themselves as "moderate" Islamists.
>
>           Let me stop here -- though I have much more to say. This is just to encourage all and sundry to do their own re-thinking.
>
>              Thanks, but no thanks. There is nothing to rejoice about Jamaat changing its charter, no way, no how. Banish the whole damn propaganda. We have not finished the mukti-juddho until Jamaat is wiped out of this land.

> Makes major changes in constitution for registration; allows non-Muslims to be members but puts onus of protecting independence only on them

> Shakhawat Liton and Rashidul Hasan
>
> Finally, anti-liberation Jamaat-e-Islami has recognised the historic Liberation War of Bangladesh in its newly revised constitution.
>
> The change of policy was forced upon it by its desperation to keep itself legitimised as a parliamentary party registered with the Election Commission (EC), in the face of new amendments to the Representation of the People Order (RPO).
>
> The amended RPO says the constitution of a political party seeking registration cannot contradict the country's constitution.
>
> Jamaat's provisional constitution which was submitted to the EC for getting registered as a parliamentary party, also renamed the organisation Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, changing its earlier name Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh.
>
> Jamaat also dropped a symbol with the words 'Allahu' and 'Aqimuddin' in Arabic from the cover of its provisional constitution.
>
> The party adopted its constitution in 1979.
>
> Its also allows non-Muslims to be members of Jamaat, but puts the responsibility of protecting the country's independence and sovereignty by taking an oath only on them, while the Muslim members are exempted from taking that oath.
>
> "I shall actively play a role in defending the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh," reads a section of the oath scheduled for non-Muslim members, whose inclusion was prompted by the party's latest necessity for removing religious and gender discriminations within the organisation.
>
> According to Jamaat's interim constitution which will be ratified by a national council within six months of the first sitting of the next parliament, as promised by it, both Muslim and non-Muslim members however must swear to abide by the rules and decisions of the party, giving the highest priority to implementing the decisions.
>
> Among other fundamental beliefs and spirits, Jamaat also accepted the spirit of the heroic liberation war of 1971 by inserting a new paragraph into the preamble of its new provisional constitution.
>
> The heroic struggle of the people and freedom fighters that liberated Bangladesh and put it on the world map as an independent country has been mentioned as a part of the fundamental beliefs and spirits of the party.
>
> Submitting the application for registration and the provisional constitution to the EC for being qualified to contest in the upcoming parliamentary election, Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary general of Jamaat, said his party has been in politics since May, 1979 by accepting the creation of Bangladesh through the liberation war.
>
> Jamaat was constitutionally banned for years in the newly independent country for its anti-liberation activities and collaboration with the invading army in 1971.
>
> Many Jamaat leaders were facing charges of war crimes and some of them were on the run.
>
> But the party was allowed to resume its activities in 1979 as the constitutional ban on forming religion based political parties was repealed after the bloody regime change of August 15, 1975.
>
> Lately, Jamaat's survival was facing difficulties again as the revised RPO made political parties' registration with the EC mandatory for contesting in the parliamentary election.
>
> The strict new provisions forced the party to change the preamble to its constitution accepting the historic liberation war as its original constitution contradicted the Constitution of Bangladesh.
>
> Jamaat, traditionally an Islamist fundamentalist party, in its revised constitution replaced the phrase describing its goal of 'establishing the rule of Allah' with a new phrase of 'establishing a fair and just Islamic society'.
>
> The party included a new section in its constitution' s preamble that says, "Jamaat-e-Islami will work to establish an Islamic social system that guarantees justice for all, since Bangladesh emerged as the third largest Muslim country through a heroic battle of the people and freedom fighters."
>
> According to its interim constitution, Jamaat also co-opted the members of its women's majlish-e-sura into the central majlish-e-sura, the highest policy making body.
>
> It also added provisions for reserving 33 percent seats for women in all its committees with a promise to achieve the target by 2020.
>
> In line with the amended RPO, the new Jamaat constitution also promises to nominate parliamentary contenders from a panel created by the grassroots level committees and forwarded to the party's parliamentary board.
>
> About severing its ties with front organisations, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman who yesterday went to apply for the party's registration, said Jamaat has no front organisation.
>
> Jamaat, a key component of BNP-led four-party alliance which ruled the country just before the current caretaker government, had earlier refused to get registered with the EC under the current RPO, and challenged its legality in the High Court terming some of the amendments unconstitutional.
