[ALOCHONA] Village Voice - New York Bangalis hold a local election

The rules required no financial disclosures, but it was rumored that Aziz had spent half a million dollars of his own money on his campaign (Aziz later said it was only $300,000), and he was heavily favored to win.

An election was about to be committed on American soil—no, not the one happening next week, the one that should result in a huge turnout by American standards, but will, inevitably, only rouse a minority of adult Americans to polling places. No, this was another kind of election entirely, one that involved people whose passion for politics is completely alien to the native-born of this country.

In the dead silence of a Sunday morning, hours before the crowds arrived, Chad Mia, a former manager at a Sbarro franchise, rode his truck full of milky sweet tea, stewed chickpeas, and lentil cakes through an industrial section of Queens. It was 2 a.m. He curled up in the front seat to catch a few hours of sleep. He wanted to guard both his spot from the other vendors that would arrive later on that day and something that was perhaps even more important: a large hanging banner that bore the face of a man named Mohammed Aziz, his favorite candidate. He feared the banner might be taken down during the night.

By 8 a.m., the sidewalks were bustling with people and television cameras from eight different stations; bejeweled women in brightly colored saris and men in suits were locked in noisy debate. Campaign staffers lined the block with tables and folding chairs. To get to the polling precinct—a warehouse called the "Queens Palace"—voters pushed through a narrow aisle of people who shoved flyers in their faces and shouted all at once.

So much clamor, and the actual voting wasn't set to begin for another two hours—for all the politicking and arguing and debate, these people were only casting ballots for the officers of a nonprofit organization.

The election of the Bangladesh Society of New York is one of the most festive days of the year for local immigrants. Voters, most of whom are noncitizens, are obsessed with the electoral process. "It's like Diwali!" one man said, referring to the Hindu festival of light that's happening in Jackson Heights this week. As in the presidential election, the same issues had come up: economic insecurity, voting fraud, and the charisma of the candidates.

An election commissioner, Sayed Tipu Sultan, wearing a ribbon with the words "Commissioner of Elections" pinned to his blazer, buzzed about confidently, maintaining order. "This is going to be a very hard-fought election," he announced. "Both parties are very strong."

He barked into a BlackBerry and took a moment to talk to the television cameras. Nearly 13,000 people were registered to vote. They would make their way to four other precincts—in nearby Jamaica and Ozone Park, in the Bronx, and in Brooklyn.

Everything was running smoothly, he said, but that hasn't always been the case. "Whenever a party lost an election, he would file a petition to the court," Sultan said. "You know, just to play around a little bit."

One man, who called himself a campaign manager, was manning a table on the sidewalk. "Our panel is the very best panel!" he yelled, pushing a flyer with his slate of candidates—all on the Aziz team—into people's faces as they walked by.

People seemed to be in high spirits, and they had reason to be happy. Just two days earlier, a district court judge had dismissed a lawsuit against the popular Aziz, a wealthy contractor who was seeking a three-year term as president of the Society. The plaintiffs in the suit—from his political opposition—had alleged that Aziz paid the registration fees, at $20 each, for hundreds of people. That allegation did turn out to be partially true (Aziz insists that he paid for only a handful of people)—but, the court found, it was well within the rules set out by the society's official election commission.

The rules required no financial disclosures, but it was rumored that Aziz had spent half a million dollars of his own money on his campaign (Aziz later said it was only $300,000), and he was heavily favored to win.

"When we have a candidate, we support him with our heart and soul," said Mia. "We support him with money, plus energy. We support this guy because he will bring us into mainstream American politics. He will be our voice!"

Just weeks before, Mia had lost his job as a manager at a Sbarro restaurant on Canal Street. Business was down 40 percent. The job market in New York is very bad, he explained. Since he lost his job, he's been working as a street vendor in Jackson Heights. The election, he pointed out, is itself an economic engine for the struggling community (Sultan says it costs about $100,000 to run). Mia was hoping the charitable Aziz would set up job-training programs if he was elected president.

Aziz, who is based in Bed-Stuy, builds affordable housing in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. He was running on a platform of building a community center, fixing immigration problems, and finding jobs for Bangladeshis.

People lined up to enter the precinct, showing IDs at the door. The machines were the same ones used by the city. Poll workers checked people's last names and sent them to the proper booth to vote, each of which was guarded by a beefy African-American man wearing a black SECURITY T-shirt. The security men checked the levers on the machines to ensure that nobody voted twice.

Most people had no trouble using the machines—Aziz had sponsored training workshops a few weeks earlier.

Outside, the security guards ushered people off the sidewalk, appearing more like bouncers at a nightclub than supervisors of an election. (At one point, even the election commissioner himself was told to clear the area.) Armed plainclothes NYPD officers were also standing by.

"We are born into politics," said Mia, adding that Bangladeshis love Barack Obama. "It's the way we grow up—politics, politics," he said. "Americans don't seem to care that much."

Few people, however, could name the Bangladesh Society's accomplishments during the previous year.

"For hundreds of years, we were suppressed by the Dutch. And then by the British. And we fought them! But nobody could rule us forever. We really like to get involved to change our fate," said commissioner Sultan. He paused a moment, and then noted that in Bangladesh itself, the political system is woefully corrupt. "But it never changes that much."

After the votes were counted, Aziz had won by a 75 percent margin.

"I never thought I was actually that popular," he said a few days after the raucous day of voting. "It's unbelievable. I just couldn't believe how much people like me."

[mukto-mona] Re: Books by Imam Ghazzali - Sent Using Google Toolbar

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50465

We see lack of focus in the statement -

"Das has finally found at least one (12th century) scholar named
Ghazzali from Islamic (Muslim) tradition whose world views were very
broad."

I think Das is ready to embrace a person of islamic descent or a
person with islamic-sounding name as long as that person has a broad
view. He never mentioned that people born of muslim parents are not
capable of having a liberated view.

Harun is not quite a Hannan but he can turn into one if his god
dictates him to become one. A person who declare that he believes in
a god should be kept in a check. .... and Chakrabarty should stop
pampering islamic mindset.

Re: [mukto-mona] Books by Imam Ghazzali - Sent Using Google Toolbar

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50428

"Now, if you are as well-read in philosophy and the social sciences as you are so fond of announcing,----"-----Dr. Harun-uz-Zaman.

That's how Prof. Das can be truly characterized when it comes to selling himself as a pundit. I highly appreciate that Prof. Das has finally found at least one (12th century) scholar named Ghazzali from Islamic (Muslim) tradition whose world views were very broad. Unfortunately "--in 1150 his works were publicly burnt, a not infrequent practice in that century,---" (Grunbaum). People capable of thinking like Ghazzali have never been rare in history. They are not rare in the contemporary world too. It is our mindset that obstructs our views of the true nature of human thoughts. Our views are so blurred that we cannot distinguish between thoughts of Dr. Harun-uz-Zaman and Mr. Hannan (one example, view about removal of sculpture). Also we cannot distinguish between the thoughts of Maulana Wahiduddin and Maulana Mowdoodi. One other factor that has blurred our views are the world-wide highly visible acts of the Islamic militants.

[ALOCHONA] Fw: Young Generation:Our and Their Duties

Young Generation:Our and Their Duties

The young generation in most of the countries in  the world are facing a more difficult situation than the olderr generations. They are facing very serious problems of gigantic proportion.First one is  the present financial crisis.which will affect all , old and new. This crisis has exposed the greed of the moneyed people, the Boards and CEOs of the companies and their  irresponsible risk taking to the detriment of the interest of humanity. It has been proved that  neither one hundred percent controlled economy nor one hundred percent market economy are workable or sustainable in the long run.The solution lies in a market economy under strict supervision of the state or Hisba in Islamic economic term. You can call it Islamic economy or welfare economy or by any other name.Second crisis the world is facing  is climate change and envirironmental degradation of immense proportion which is the result of human folly because of greedy capitalists and governments who did not care for the environment in the process of industrialisation. We are all suffering now but the burnt will be mostly on the young generation and the future generations.

Third is moral degradation. Large sections of People have become selfish, un-principled, robot-like without sensivity to human suffering, hedonist always looking for enjoyment, sexually pervert and promiscuous. This selfishness is reflected in politics, international relations and business. Why so much disparity iamong various sections of people. The super rich individuals and countries  around the world have become so rich only by depriving  the labor  (by the manufacturers ) or  giving less price to the raw-material producers by industrialists or importing countries with more bargaining strength .They have  also amassed wealth by charging more price from the consumers or  importing countries with less bargaining power.

In this context  young generation must realise the dangers to humanity and fight against all these to save humanity. The believers can do it only through imbibing the true spirit of guidance of God.We  do not find any way for atheists. They can not change the world as they do not have permanent value and as they have no accoutiblity.

Most unfortunately the young feneration is under the grip of the moral degradation we have described above. They have to be prepared in a morally sound way with faith in heart and idealism. The parents have to realise this, they have to put in their heart high moral qualities. This can be done by teaching them from the lives of moraly sound great people in history. The teachers have to  play a great role to save them from immorality and materialism. The education system should give more emphsis on moral and ethical education. The media has great responsibility. They should purge them from vulgarity and should promote decent culture and behavior , not nudity and porno type films

[ALOCHONA] Delhi’s go ahead for Tipaiukh Dam Project

Delhi's go ahead for Tipaiukh Dam Project

The central government of India has given a go ahead for the construction of the proposed Tipaimukh dam across river Borak in the Manipur state on the east of the Sylhet region of bangladesh, according to information received in Dhaka.

River Borak divides into two distributaries - Surma and Kushiara - before crossing the border into Bangladesh and combine to form the Meghna.

The Tipaimukh Project envisages construction of 162.8 h high rockfill dam at about 500 m downstream of the confluence of river Barak with Tuivai. The main objective of the project is to generate 1500 MW hydropower and flood control on 2039 Sq. km.

The total land requirement for the project is about 31,950 ha. Out of which 26237 ha. is forest land; private land is 5713 ha. Total submergence is about 29150 ha (27550 ha in Manipur & 1600 ha in Mizoram).

Construction of the dam will directly affect the flow of river Meghna inside Bangladesh. The Indian government did not consult the lower riparian country which will be adversely affected.

The environmental clearance given to the project on 24 October last by the central government is based only study of its possible adverse impacts at the dam site and its neighbourhood. Its possible impacts on Bangladesh which shares the Borak-Meghna Basin have been ignored and overlooked.

Engineer Hilaluddin of Angikar Bangladesh has termed this a very bad news for the civilization developed along Barak/Meghna basin of Bangladesh and India. "The Indian authorities have already issued environmental clearance to the disastrous Tipaimukh Dam Poject. They did not consult Bangladesh, the lower riparian country, which will be the most adversely affected due to the Dam," he added.

Re: [mukto-mona] Let people know....

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50448

I just learned that police forces are preparing for a savage riot if Obama, the Pied Piper of America, does not win. This is probably the first time an American presidential election has created such a condition. Of course, we, the people from the third world countries, are very much familiar with this type of situation. It happened in Bangladesh after 2001 election, where winners celebrated their victory by setting religious minority villages on fire, raping minority women, attacking opposition political party cadres, killing innocent by-standers, etc. If you think, this cannot happen in America, think again; it has just arrived in America.

I saw a report that a car was vandalized because it had a McCain/Palin banner at the back. Now I know why such banners are difficult to spot in our neighborhood. This is so new in America. This country is changing so fast.  I have seen many presidential elections; the situation has never been so intimidating, which tells me all about the diehard Obama fans, starving for the Government Doe that Messiah (Obama) has promised.

Welcome to the new America, where thugs will rule the street.

Jiten Roy

[mukto-mona] Congo's maverick warlord who kills in the name of Christianity

Congo's maverick warlord who kills in the name of Christianity

General Laurent Nkunda is a contradiction. An urbane jungle-dweller; an evangelical Christian warlord; a cerebral military strategist who unleashes awful brutality; a tribal protector and father of six who recruits children into his ranks; a patriot who wages war and steals the resources of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As ever, General Nkunda, 41, has been justifying his assaults by saying that he must protect minority ethnic Tutsis. This week his 4,000 well-trained, disciplined troops marched from their mountain strongholds past the volcanoes and villages of North Kivu before stopping a few miles from Goma, a dusty provincial town bloated with refugees. The national army fled in disarray and UN peacekeepers failed to halt his advance.
Tall and slim, General Nkunda sometimes dresses in smartly pressed camouflage fatigues with a beret and a gold-topped cane, at other times in warlord chic with dark sunglasses, cowboy hat and a badge emblazoned with the slogan "Rebels for Christ".
He studied psychology before joining the rebel army of Paul Kagame, now the President of Rwanda, in 1993. Their close relationship endures, and many accuse Rwanda of backing General Nkunda's rebellion. Mr Kagame denies this - but he has the influence to rein in the general if he chooses to, and it is clear that Rwandan businessmen and politicians benefit from the general's control of a swath of the country.
In 1994 General Nkunda and Mr Kagame, fellow Tutsis, fought alongside each other to push the Hutu tribal militias responsible for Rwanda's genocide out of the country and into what was then neighbouring Zaire, which became Congo in 1997.
In the ensuing war General Nkunda became a senior rebel officer, helping to topple Zaire's President, Mobutu Sese Seko. As Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Angola all joined in the fight and stripped the country of its resources - from gold and tin to cows and bushmeat — General Nkunda's reputation for ruthlessness grew.
In 2002 he brutally suppressed a mutiny in Kisangani, a key trading town formerly known as Stanleyville that sits on a broad bend in the Congo River. More than 160 people were executed, some bound and flung off a bridge into the river, earning him the nickname "The Butcher of Kisangani".
A 2003 peace deal intended to end the war - which had already claimed three million lives — gave him the rank of general in the national army but the agreement failed to end the fighting. Millions have died from disease or starvation, hundreds of thousands have been raped, and tens of thousands of children have been recruited to fight.
General Nkunda refused to report to the capital, Kinshasa, blaming the Government for failing to disarm the remaining Hutu militias in the east of the country. In June 2004 his troops besieged and then overran the once-beautiful town of Bukavu on the southern shore of Lake Kivu. Declaring that he had to protect the town's Tutsi population from ethnic attacks, his troops launched their own pogrom, raping women and children, murdering civilians and looting homes and shops.
For these crimes an arrest warrant was issued in 2005 but despite the presence in the region of 17,000 UN troops, General Nkunda has for years run a chunk of North Kivu as a private fiefdom from his mountain stronghold in Rutshuru. In person he is softly spoken and switches easily between English, French, Swahili and Kinyarwanda. He has a tendency to refer to himself in the third person and says he admires Mahatma Gandhi and President Bush. For now General Nkunda has ordered his forces not to enter Goma but if he changes his mind there is little to stop them. Everyone knows what happened in Bukavu; Goma's civilian residents are rightly terrified.

[mukto-mona] How will Jamaat muffle it killing spree in 1971, thereafter and in the future?

Anti-India sloganeering is not just an sickening obsession of the Jamaat it is in their charter. Blame it all on RAW/MOSAD.  Do we have instances of Indian BJP/Sangh Parivar engaged in mass killing of Hindus?  Do the Zionists habitually engage in murdering the Jew?

How about our Jamaati Islami berathari toward fellow Muslims of Bangla land? Please read the followin note frm Ahsan Abbas of Pakistan, who seems to know a thing or two about Muslims killing Muslims:

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Re: Upcoming conspiracies surrounding general election in Bangladesh

If a morally bankrupt person calls me intellectually bankrupt, I take it as complement.  Thank you.  Why don't you provide us some facts (including dates) and reasoning what MOSAD did in Bangladesh since you have case against them?   As far as deviating from the subject, I can accuse you of the same.  You could not provide any justifications for the lies and broken promises of those pseudo-Islamic parties to EC during their previous visits.  Sorry I cannot call somebody Islamic for hypocrisy.  If they are like all the other non-religious political parties, why do they use Islam in pursuing their worldly goals?  Why do they deceive us with their outward religious appearances?  I wanted to say lying is very little sin compared to what these religious frauds are capable of doing without any hesitation.  Sorry that of type of accusation hurts you personally.  I was not aware of that.
