3 killed in Panchagarh by BSF fire: official
Mon, Nov 17th, 2008 12:45 am BdST
Panchagarh, Nov 16 (bdnews24.com) – An infant, the mother and another Bangladeshi were killed late Sunday night by Indian Border Security Force men on the country's northernmost border, said a BDR official.

"The deceased were identified as 35 year-old Golam Mustofa, 25-year-old Majeda Begum and her one-year-old infant Mamun," Maj. Sheikh Farid, in-charge of Panchagarh-25 Battalion, told bdnews24.com.

At least one other person, Majeda's husband Shahidul, 30, was critically wounded and taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

BSF personnel entered Moyanaguri village of the Majhipara border area in Tentulia, crossing near the frontier's Pillar-435 at around 10.15pm, the major said.

They started opening fire after villagers had intercepted them, he said.

Shahidul, Majeda and Mamun were shot as they lay asleep in their home, said villagers.

Shahidul's neighbour, Alamgir Hossain said: "I was woken by the sound of gunfire and realised it was BSF. I cycled to Matirpara BDR camp for help."

The Indian border guards eventually withdrew. "BDR members with villagers later captured one BSF man, who appeared drunk," the major said.

"Homes, riddled with bullet holes, were deserted as villagers took shelter at the local high school," bdnews24.com' s correspondent reported from the scene around midnight.

"Senior BDR officers are present at the scene. Both BDR and BSF have reinforced their presence along the border," Major Farid told bdnews24.com.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Re: Rice is the Worst Enemy of Mankind - By Bashir Mahmud Ellias

re: musasarkar
-----------------

i hope you were not drunk / half-asleep, when you wrote your comments.

i have written about rice.....why you are talking about urdu, and other irrelevent points!!!
we all know that.

Are you reacting , to my comments about corrupt+ unwise AL + other politicians?

What made me a bad bengali? Talking about Ayub Khan?

That is just a part of history....whats wrong with that?

Dont get too excited and dont demonstrate childish attitude, when you discuss history and other facts of life.

Have I made any comments about urdu, Jinnah etc??

It will be interesting to know why you brought up these points?
Do you always react..if someone exposes inefficiency, corruption, immorality, mismanagement of AL + other politicians?

I hope you are not trying to divert our attention...from the black chapters of Bdeshi politicians.

By the way, we are talking about RICE...do you want to offer any scientific facts?
Do you want to tell us about other Carbohydrates...and why those are different from Rice? Tell us about the metabolism of carbohydrate, negative effects of rice in elderly people, cost-effectiveness of rice as a major food.

You can talk about AL garbage on another day...you can defend your CHOR politician-friends later......you can tell us how much AL thugs + few other politicians have damaged Bdeshi society, since Jan 1972!!!

Cheers.

Khoda hafez.

Re: Maqsud Omar,
You are a very good Bengali.  Ayub Khan blamed Bengalis for not choosing Urdu as the only national language of Pakistan and called us "Crooked Bengalis"  in his book "Dairies of Field Marshall Mohammad Ayub Khan: 1966-72".  Jinnah and many other Pakistani leaders advised us on so many things for 24 years:  why Urdu is better and should be only state language, how to live as second class citizens, how to forget about rights and believe only in Muslim brotherhood, how not to complain about discrimination, how to interpret election result correctly if it favors the Bengalis etc.  Some un-educated, uncivilized politicians in East Pakistan, led by AL morons (AL thugs sounded better in your previous posting)......opposed those advices....and look what we got......independent Bangladesh.  How can a proud Bengali tolerate that?

Two-third of the world grow and eat rice because the land, topography and climate suit growing rice more easily than anything else. You can advocate mixing rice with other nutritious food stuff to reduce carbohydrates, but making rice responsible for our irresponsible behaviors and habits are not to produce good results.

> What is the main obstacle of our country's (Bangladesh) development (-prosperity- improvement-
> betterment) ? If it is asked, certainly different people will give different answers. But if you analyze it from the view-point of medical science, then I will say rice is our worst national enemy. Rice is such a prominent food item which contains excessive amount of sugar (carbohydrate). So it hastens our physical growth & we become adult (mature) very quickly. That's why we get married promptly & start having babies more speedily. Sometimes it seems to me that just a few days ago a guy who himself was a baby, now he is completely exhausted (-fagged-worn-out) being a father or grandfather of many children. That means eating rice is the root cause of population explosion in such a dreadful manner. If you don't believe you can look on the rice eating countries, like china-india-indonesia-thailand-japan-korea, all of them are going through population problem in highest degree. For the unimaginable explosion of population, government become a failure even spending billions of dollar annually to provide our basic needs like food, cloth, residence, education & health. Rice not only make us adult (mature) very quickly, but also rapidly converts us to old guys. As a result we become incompetent (worthless) for any jobs and turn to a burden to the family (thus to the society & country). As because in old age we lack energy to work & various diseases invade our body & mind. In our country almost ninety percent of people found to be have gastric ulcer who visits doctor. Excessive amount of sugar in rice causes flatulency (gas) in the stomach and gas formation tends to the acidity & ulcer. Perhaps nobody will deny the fact that rice is the root cause of diabetes. You will not find gastric ulcer & diabetes epidemic in those countries where bread (wheat) is the main food item. Now I am to say that this poor country has to waste millions of dollars every year to import the medicines only for this two diseases.
>
> Some may say that most of the medicines of this two diseases are manufactured in our country. Yea, that's right ; but raw materials, machinery, packing items all are have to imported. There are many pathological test done to diagnose these diseases and these diagnostic machineries & chemical reagents are also have to import spending lot of foreign currencies. Yet we can ignore the squandering of invaluable time (working hour) in the doctor's chamber, hospital & sick-bed. Not only these two diseases but hundreds of diseases can be named having link with this notorious rice. You may say that laziness is the main obstacle in the way of our country's development rather than rice. Then I will say that rice creates laziness in our body & mind. The excessive amount of sugar/carbohydrate in rice is the real cause of laziness. As it is usually seen we become exhausted from least exertion, excessive amount of sugar in rice is responsible for this situation. As rice contains immoderate amount of sugar & after eating rice it is digested quickly & the principal ingredient (sugar) is quickly absorbed in our bloodstream & the sugar level suddenly become high, so we begin to feel drowsy, weak & lazy like a diabetic patient. You can say, Japanese (, Chinese & Koreans) are also rice eater & still they are not lazy (like us); on the contrary they are very much active & hardworking & they don¢t become tired from little labor. Yea, in this regard they got some climatic advantage. They don¢t sweat so much even during hard work because of their cold weather, as we do. As a result they don¢t break-away easily from little labour like us. Moreover people of Mongolian origin (flat-nose) are anthropologically very much energetic & industrious. On the contrary we sweat much because of our hot & damp weather and that¢s why we get easily tired, exhausted through losing essential mineral salts with sweats. So excess sugar in rice & excess sweating both are equally responsible for our laziness, debility & inactivity.
>
> Somebody may say that poverty is our most vital problem. If you think little deeply then you will realize that rice is the basic cause of our incurable poverty. As because if we fill our stomach with rice unto the nose, it will digest & absorbed so quickly that within two hours we will become hungry again. So we have to eat too much & our expenditure on food purpose become high & it force us to reduce expenditure on other fields (like health, education, infrastructure etc) . Look at our physical strength or (slender) physical structure ; both are ridiculous, pathetic. And the notorious (black sheep) rice is responsible for this poor status. You will obviously understand the demerits of rice if you compare the physical structure of rice-eater Indians, Chinese & Indonesians with wheat-eater Arabian, European & American. You will certainly notice that players of rice-eating countries can not do much well in the strenuous games (like football, cricket, marathon, wrestling etc). The reason is same and that is if we eat rice our blood sugar level (energy) rises to the highest level for a short time & then it again reduce to an alarmingly lowest position. On the contrary, if you eat wheat (bread) it will digest steadily taking much time & that¢s why your blood sugar level will not suddenly jump to highest level for a little while. As a result your calorie/ energy level will remain in standard position comparatively for longer time. Like rice it does not suddenly rise to the highest level & then fall to the lowest level. If we do not start eating wheat bread quickly in stead of rice, then the millions of dollars our government is wasting every years for family planning, will have to continue for how many years Allah knows ! On the contrary, governments of the wheat-eater countries (like Middle east, Australia, Europe, America etc) are facing failure to increase their population even offering billion dollars bonus to their couples.
>
> Some people think that illiteracy is the main problem in the way of our national prosperity. In this point we can say that poverty is responsible for illiteracy, over-population is responsible for poverty & rice is responsible for over-population. Recently many people are claiming that corruption is our chief national problem. Think in this way that poverty-illiteracy- unawareness is responsible for corruption & in our country the primary cause of poverty & illiteracy is overpopulation. Population not being a blessing rather has become a curse & rice is wholly responsible for this kind of consequence. So we have to entirely give up the habit of eating rice from right now & start having wheat bread in order to build a healthy & happy nation. But our women community are more interested in cooking rice than baking wheat bread. As because cooking rice is very easy but baking wheat bread is much hard. At the same time women should think that to eat rice we need to cook many delicious curry but to eat wheat bread these are not essential. Only potato fry or pulse¢s soup is enough. At this case we can buy seasonal fruits with the money usually spent for vegetables. That would be also better for our health. As the vegetables price is sky-high, it would be wise to consume one kilogram fruits in lieu of three kilogram vegetables. As we know vegetables contain less nutrient & yet most of them are spoiled by heat during cooking. To save our women from the hazard of baking wheat bread, the owner of hotel, restaurant & food industry can play a vital role. They have to given up the habit of preparing incredibly small & thin bread fried with six month old burnt oil & rather have to begin making mega-size wheat bread like middle east countries, one of which is enough for an entire family. Moreover we can make wheat bread machine available in every family like Europe & America. Some may argue that wheat flour is more costly than rice, but at the same time they should also consider the facts of various diseases like diabetes & premature senility.
>
> According to expert, wheat flour¢s price can be easily reduced by mixing corn maze with it. We should also think about huge amount of water needed to produce paddy (rice), which will be a real problem in our country in near future. On the contrary so much water is not necessary for the cultivation of wheat. To acquire hundred percent benefit from eating wheat bread we have to consume unfiltered natural flour ; because the food companies (market packed flour) greatly reduce its nutrient quality by excessively straining it (to make flour white). So our request to the government is that govt. should encourage people to produce & consume wheat every way (and discourage the rice). If it is necessary we can depend on & produce genetically modified (GM) wheat. As GM food has gained acceptance in Europe & America, then we should not remain hesitated about it. Moreover our holy prophet (pbuh) has given his opinion in favor of genetically modified (GM) food. In one of his sayings he said, ¡in the last age there will be superabundance of food grains¢. That means people rice, wheat, onion, garlic, fruit, vegetables etc of mega-size will be invented & people will be obliged to consume those (to get ride of famine).

[mukto-mona] Re: [IHRO] Whom Hindus should blame for conversion?

>>>Christianity stepped into India with Saint Thomas in first century AD-at a time when Christians were persecuted ruthlessly by the Roman empire >>>

Read History. There was no Christianity in first Century AD eventhough Thomas (Doubting) accompanied Jesus to Srinagar after escaping crucifixion, and was sent to Malabar from where spices were sent to Rome and Egypt in exchange for gold by weight.

Indeed Jews were the first to arrive at Kodungallur in Kerala when persecuted by Julius Caesar and other Roman Kings ruling over the Jerusalem lands. The Jewish diaspora spread to Florence across the Mediterranian and further to all other Countries in Europe, esp. Austria and eastern Europe.

Rama, Krishna, Valmiki, Kalidasa or many other mythological characters are not Brahmins. Many of them are SC or OBC-s under present classification.
Understand what was Caste sytem properly. It was only classification of the people dependent on the jobs assigned and carried out by them. A Brahmin's so cannot be a Brahmin, bu can become a Sudra if he carries out the Sudra's unskilled work. Similarly a Sudra if he gets educated and is skilled would be revered and occupy the Brahminical position.

In olden India there was no restriction in anyone marrying any other of any Caste. Please read the history of Tamilnadu in particular during the Sangham periods.

Passivism and non-violence has caused shrinking of Hinduism from Gandharam (Afghanistan) and Pakistan as well as Bangladesh. Now we are facing extermination of Hinduism by frantic conversions by force and inducement in various parts of India. Examples are North East which was below 2% Christians after independence has over 75%-90% Christians converted by World Vision from Australia and NZ. The same continues in all tribal areas in Jharkand, Orissa and Chattisgarh. The Congress Samuel Reddy iconverting about 5000 Hindu-s per day.

Read details of inquisition on Goa, which is being tried on a massive scale in India now. Should India keep its "Sanathandharma" when Dharma itself is being compromised. Krishna said in Bhagvatgeetha to resist such a situation by violence aand this is whe Hindu-s have started now.

Would you allow a scavenger's son to come and occupy your sofa in drawing room straight from his job? This sort of discrimination is there throughout the World and people propagating anti-Hindu sentiments are mercenaries paid by US based missionaries to vilify and denigrate Hinduism and Casteism.

Regarding genocide of Hindu-s by Islamic invaders, read the historical facts written by Muslim Scholars themselves eulogising the invading army giving statistics of the destruction of temples and killings. Do you want details?

Why do you talk of Casteism in this 21st.Century when India is ruled by 70% non-Hindu and lower caste SC/ST/OBC Ministers, bureaucrats, Govt. officials since 60 years. If the so called lower castes getting free food, accommodation, studies/ books and scholarships on Caste basis throughout and get jobs of reservation even if unqualified, sine 60 years, enjoying in third generation now, how long do you think it will take for the so called depressed to come up to level of others? Never under the existing policies of support by crutches!!

You want to know why and how the tribals and Dalits are converted to Christianity? Are you aware that for every conversion carried out, the evangelical parent compensates the local missionaries US$ 1000 each?

How many were killed in Orissa for retaliatory action against the murder of the Swami Lakshmananda? A handful? Why has the Rajya Sabha MP who is implicated in the killing run away to Delhi and hiding under Sonia's protection? Why has the nun refused to identify the rapists- the rape charge itself has been disproved in forensic/ medical tests?

Do not be carried away by the English media, both visual and print, owned mostly by foreign evengelical groups, who paint a dismal picture of Hinduism wherever possible.

Hinduism is in danger in India. Hindu-s will unite and throw out anti-nationals and illegal immigrants as well as evangelists engaged in conversions in India.

Whom Hindus should blame for conversion?

orissa%20riots.jpg

Recent incidents of ongoing communal riot between Hindus and Christians that resulted in death of more than sixty people in last two months, tarnished the pluralist image of India. We held this sacred image of religious tolerance as our supreme ethos for last two thousands years. Christianity stepped into India with Saint Thomas in first century AD-at a time when Christians were persecuted ruthlessly by the Roman empire . Judaism came to India in 70 AD, soon after they were expelled from their land by Romans. Nathan Katz observes ( Who are the Jews of India) -India is the only country where Jews were neither discriminated nor persecuted. Such tradition of religious tolerance over thousands of years is unmatched in the history of civilization. Magnanimity of Indian civilization radiated from the core philosophy of Sanatan Dharma-Ekam Sat. Reality is everywhere and in every being! Unlike Abrahamic faiths, Sanatan philosophy is not in pursuit of 'perfect belief' but in search of truth accepting personal evolution of individual spiritual quest. The whole idea of Adaitya Vedhanta, at the center of Hinduism, accepts highest level of plurality by Aham Brahman-realization of universal consciousness in individual consciousness in their own way. Therefore, modern Hindu spiritual leader of 19th century, Shri Ramakrishna declared this plurality of Vedanta as Jato Mat Toto Path-as many ways that many paths to realize the truth. In short, this is the true summery of Hinduism-unity in diversity of faiths.

However political reality of India experienced an entirely different version of Hinduism, devoid of enlightenment and encapsulated with castism supporting Brhamnical supremacy. Question of social identity of lower Sudra cast, who are not considered a Varna( high class) Hindu, happened to be at the root of all communal tension till to date. Hindu epic Ramayan unambiguously promotes castism and Brahmnical supremacy. However , in Mahabharat, although in Bhagbad Gita, Lord Krishna unabashedly supported castism, the epic reveals an ambivalence position of castism in Hindu society. For example, when Ghotakatch, mighty son of Vima, second of Pundav, asked explanation from Krisna-whether he has not been summoned to war because he is not born of a caste Hindu mother and that whether cast Hindu warriors would find it embarrassing to fight with him, a low birth by Hindu cast system, Lord Krishna gracefully replied- caste of a person is not by birth but by his achievement. This seemed to sound a very different note with Pundav's attitude towards mighty "Suta Putra" Karna, who has never been addressed by Pundavas as King of Angada but always by suta-putra (son of Chariot owner) despite Karna exceeded high caste Pundavs in the grace of might and generosity. Based on the numerous evidences in Mahabharat, one but can not fail to see, Hindu's position on castism has always been ambiguous but it was ruthlessly implemented as 'birth based' social system denying the social identity of the working labor class. This ambiguity and sometimes, ruthless denial of human position of lower casts in Hinduism made them vulnerable to conversion. When Islam invaded India, scheduled cast Hindus, specially in Bengal, embraced them as boon against tyranny of Brahmanism. However, Islamic rule didn't create much of a communal tension because majority of Muslim leaders were also supporter of cast based Hindu system and indeed, Indian version of Islam adopted its neo-castism by attaching their elites to superior ethnicity to distinguish themselves from local low caste Hindu converts. Except for Aurangazeb, who was an Islamic zealot, a very high degree of cohesion between Hindus and Muslims can be found throughout entire Islamic history of India.

When Christian missionaries came to India, they too found their soft targets in scheduled cast Hindus during sixteen and seventeenth century. However, they faced a daunting task of conversion because by then, Hindus were aware, that lower casts may leave Hindu society altogether and therefore waves of reformist movement swept across India to eliminate castism as a response against egalitarian message of Islam. In Bengal, Shri Chaitanya led the reformist movement through Gauriya Baishnavism where he proudly declared abolition of castism in fifteenth century. His magic worked among lower class Bengali Hindus who accepted his teaching and mass conversion to Islam virtually came to a full stop. However, effect of castism was only reduced but never nullified. Nevertheless, success of Christian missionaries in terms of conversion were very limited and they established themselves by social service to common mass. Even today, all the best schools and hospitals in India are run by Christian missionaries. Most of the Hindu elites of today are product of these Missionary schools and none of them would ever complain that these missionary fathers ever made any attempt to convert them. Till Hinduvta movement started swinging in full glory in late 80's , there was no tension between Hindu and Christian community who are almost invisible minority in India. What is then root cause of new wave of communal hatred against each other?

Much of it is hidden in recent rise of Hinduism as aggressive political response to monotheist faiths. Historically Hinduism always responded to Islam or Christianity by reforming its religion. For example, Gauriyo Baishanvism was response to Islam and Brahmo Samaj was Hindu counter response to Christianity. Indeed, in those days, Hindusim took to intellectual and meaningful spiritual response very successfully because it didn't enjoy political power. But this time, since Hinduism is having more political power than ever before, it is stooping to low by responding the problem of conversion politically where need of the hour is to address the problem and isolation of lower caste Hindus who are getting converted because neither they get any social recognition nor any material support by staying in Hinduism. Instead of choosing the most difficult and meaningful path of accommodating vast number of scheduled casts and tribes into the fold of Hinduism by giving them equal social status and material means as Shri Chaintanya did it in fifteenth century, todays' Hindu leaders, devoid of spiritual and intellectual ardor, are more interested in the politics than spiritual quest. They are foxy political leaders who are more after a fortune harvest by playing Holi with bloods of the innocent Christians.

I hear much noise about legal ban on conversion. First of all conversion is a foolish idea and it serves only the purpose of social identity exploited in politics. But question that a caste Hindu must ask first-why even today, position of castism in Hinduism is as ambiguous as it was during the time of Mahabharata? This simple truth exposes why reformist teaching of Hindu spiritual maestros like Shri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and Dayananda Sarawati could not change Hinduism when it comes to castism. Why we don't see any strong denouncement of castism by Hindu organizations? In theory, they do and speak of abolition of castism but can anybody cite me single example of any Hindu caste leader got his children married to a scheduled tribe? Why they are still apologetic like Lord Krishna and never can come out very clearly rejecting it like Vivekananda who condemned it in the harshest language? How long do they think, these scheduled casts and tribes can be fooled by their empty slogan of equal social status in Hindu hierarchy?

Therefore, need of the hour is for another socio-spiritual reform movement inside Hinduism to abolish caste by encouraging wide-spread inter caste marriage. Though, I am not entirely sure, how many of Hindu zealots, who seem so conscious and worried about conversion game, would comply or encourage marriage of their relatives to scheduled cast and tribes. Gandhiji felt this need at his heart but he too, could not take any affirmative position. Therefore, now it is left to consciousness of Hindu mass to realize that conversion is happening because of their failure to eliminate castism which is aptly exploited with material means by Christian missionaries.

Re: [mukto-mona] Israel's president praises Saudi king: The Saudi Arabia's lack of religious freedom betrays its lofty rhetoric.

Mr. Peres has become senile.  Settling the hebrew people in Arabia had not created peace in ancient times.  Contrary would not happen now.  No amount of Blasphemy law would put God and his children back to worldwide sovereignty.  Galileo's 20" telescope has undone God forever.

Not a surprize !!!!

They have been helping each other since the birth of Israel !

The Saudi Arabia's lack of religious freedom betrays its lofty rhetoric.
The real aim of its 'dialogue' is to promote a global blasphemy law.

" Holding a session on advancing interfaith dialogue abroad is a pale substitute for hosting
it in the kingdom, where the message of respect for freedom of religion and belief is most
needed.  Against the background of Saudi repression and the kingdom's role in exporting
extremism, including through school textbooks preaching hatred of "unbelievers," the UN
and every world leader attending the special session should be demanding an end to
severe violations of religious freedom in Saudi Arabia. Dialogue is no substitute for
compliance with universal human rights standards. The monarch would make a
far greater contribution by exponentially increasing his efforts to promote
religious freedom at home, where religious intolerance reigns.  A welcome first
step would be to release Hadi Al-Mutaif and all other religious prisoners who
remain behind bars in Saudi Arabia. "     - Donald H. Argue

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has learned that at

Israel's president praises Saudi king

By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press Writer Edith M. Lederer, Associated Press Writer – Wed Nov 12, 7:44 pm ET
AP – King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia addresses the Culture of Peace meeting of the United Nations General Assembly …
UNITED NATIONS – Israel's president had rare praise for Saudi Arabia's king at a U.N. interfaith conference Wednesday, saying King Abdullah's initiative to end the Arab-Israeli conflict inspired hope that all countries in the Middle East could live in peace.
Speaking to hundreds of guests in the General Assembly chamber, where Israel has often been villified by its Arab neighbors, Shimon Peres appealed to Abdullah to maintain his leadership in the Arab world during the difficult peace process.
Minutes earlier, Abdullah said it was "high time" the world learned the harsh lesson of history — that differences between followers of different religions and cultures "engendered intolerance, causing devastating wars and considerable bloodshed without any sound logical or ideological justification."
The Saudi monarch, who initiated the two-day U.N. conference as well as another interfaith meeting in July in Madrid, called for all peoples and nations to promote peace, harmony and tolerance, saying "terrorism and criminality are the enemies of every religion and every civilization."
When Peres took the floor, he told delegates that building a new future in the Middle East "seems more feasible today in light of the Saudi proposal which evolved into an Arab peace initiative." The 2002 Saudi plan calls for Arab recognition of the Jewish state in exchange for a full Israeli withdrawal from all lands captured in the 1967 Mideast war.
Then, looking directly at Abdullah, the Israeli president interrupted his prepared speech.
"Your Majesty, the king of Saudi Arabia," Peres said. "I was listening to your message. I wish that your voice will become the prevailing voice of the whole region, of all people. It's right. It's needed. It's promising."
Later, Peres told reporters "the king's initiative created a U-turn in the policies of the Middle East, because until quite recently the formal Arab position was ... based on three `No's' ... no recognition, no negotiation, no peace with Israel."
Peres called the Saudi leader a voice of "frankness" and "understanding."
"There is a real change, basically positive. I don't deny there are open and difficult questions, but if there is a will — as the Arabs are saying — there is a way. What was today demonstrated was the will. We know that we have to work for the way," Peres said.
Both Peres and Abdullah attended a private dinner Tuesday night for leaders attending the conference, but the Israeli president would not say whether they had any personal contact — or whether he talked with other Arab leaders.
The Saudi king did not directly mention Mideast peace efforts, and he made no mention of criticism from Human Rights Watch and others about Saudi Arabia refusing to allow the public practice of any religion other than Islam.
"Terrorism and criminality are the enemies of every religion and every civilization," he said, adding that they have appeared because of the absence of tolerance. Abdullah said constructive dialogue among peoples and nations can revive "these lofty ideals."
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned the conference that globalization has increased communal strife, extremist ideologies and the polarization of societies.
"Anti-Semitism remains a scourge," he said. "Islamaphobia has emerged as a new term for an old and terrible form of prejudice. And other kinds of racism and discrimination show a dismaying persistence."
"One of the great challenges of our time must now surely be to ensure that our rich cultural diversity makes us more secure — not less," Ban said.
That challenge was echoed by other speakers at the conference which continues Thursday with speeches by President Bush and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Jordan's King Abdullah II warned that "extremists — Muslim, Christian and Jewish — are thriving on the doubts and divisions" stemming from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"I can think of no more effective way to ease East-West and inter-faith tensions" than to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a peace based on justice, respect for international law and the right of all people to live in dignity, he said

Re: [mukto-mona] Fw: Principle of justice is key: King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia

Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum. The analysis of Janab Saki is too shallow. He says" The Wahabi-Salafi school of thought is responsible for all those conflict, those we are going through and this king and his evil petro- dollars pushing the dreams and works of Muslim Brother-Hood forward, all over the present world".

It is hyperbolic to say  that the Salafis of Saudi Arabia are responsible for all crises. It is presumptuous that Abdullah is pushing the dreams of Muslim Brotherhood. This is not only injustice to Abdullah but also to Brotherhood, the victim of oppression of dictators and colonialist powers for seventy  years or more .

I may also mention that the translation of the title of Khadimul Haramain is not custodian of two holy mosques. It is also wrong to say that King Abdullah has claimed that he was speaking for all Muslims.

I feel it is one thing to dislike monarchy or some other Saudy policy, but it is a differnt thing to condemn everything Salafi.

I can also say that Wahabi is a derogatory title given to Saudis by the Islam bashing forces.

Dear Mohammed Usman,

The Wahabi-Salafi school of thought is responsible for all those conflict, those we are going through and this king and his evil petro- dollars pushing the dreams and works of Muslim Brother-Hood forward, all over the present world.

Those are responsible for the atrocities and suffering of so many people, cross-through all believers and non- believers in this world.  This conference is one the top hypocrisy of our time. This is not a surprise that Shimon Peres is supporting Saudi king, the binding between Saudi's tribe and Jewish interest is a long story.

I have two questions to every body; 1) who made Saudis the custodian of the holy mosques? 2) From whom he has got the authority to speck for all Muslims?

Regards,

Mohammed Saki.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah delivers the keynote speech at the opening of a landmark interfaith dialogue conference at the United Nations in New York on Wednesday. (SPA)

NEW YORK: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah yesterday urged world leaders attending a historic conference on interfaith dialogue at the United Nations to learn lessons from the past and establish justice in order to end violence.

"We say today with a single voice that religions through which Almighty God sought to bring happiness to mankind should not be turned into instruments to cause misery," the king said in his keynote speech at the Culture of Peace Conference organized by the UN General Assembly.

"Human beings are created equals and partners on this planet. Either they can live together in peace and harmony or they will inevitably be consumed by the flames of misunderstanding, malice and hatred."

King Abdullah added that the focus on differences by followers of different faiths and cultures had led to fanaticism and destructive wars.

"There was no need for such wars ... The time has come for us to learn lessons from the ruthless past and unite together on moral values and lofty examples that we all believe in ... We can leave our differences for God to make His judgment on the Day of Judgment."

The world desperately needs to learn the positive lessons of religion, said UN General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, who opened the conference. All religions teach "social responsibility," he added, but the world has "become contaminated by the spirit of selfishness and individualism."

D'Escoto said that the world must choose between the values of consumerism and greed, or social responsibility and ethical behavior, including the economic and political spheres.

His attack on the "unbridled greed" of the "dominant" Western culture struck a chord among most leaders at the conference.

The plenary meeting at the UN headquarters in New York — attended by nearly 70 heads of state and senior officials — is an initiative put forward by King Abdullah, aimed at hastening action on some of the most urgent challenges facing the world.

"All the tragedies the world witnesses today is the result of its abandoning of a major principle, the principle of justice, promulgated by all religions and cultures," said King Abdullah, who is the first Saudi king to address the United Nations in 51 years.

Everybody in the conference hall appreciated King Abdullah's efforts in trying to unite the world.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised the king for playing a crucial role in organizing the conference. He said a global effort was needed to confront a rising tide of communal strife and religious extremism.

King Abdullah lambasted terrorism.

"(Those who indulge in) terrorism and (other) crimes are enemies of God and enemies of every religion and culture," he said. "They would not have appeared in the presence of tolerance."

He blamed the decay of family values for the spread of drug abuse and crime.

King Abdullah told world leaders that interfaith dialogue would help revive lofty values and reinforce them in the minds of peoples and nations.

He thanked world leaders and other dignitaries who came from different parts of the globe to attend the conference.

"We would like to emphasize here that our interest in dialogue was inspired by the teachings of Islam and its values and because of our concern for the future of humanity," the king said. "We'll stretch our hands to all those who love peace, justice and tolerance."

The king concluded his speech by reciting a verse from the Holy Qur'an: "O people, we created you from a male and female, and rendered you distinct peoples and tribes, that you may recognize one another. The best among you in the sight of God is the most righteous."

"Your Majesty, the King of Saudi Arabia, I was listening to your message," Israeli President Shimon Peres said from the podium after the king spoke of the need for religious tolerance and said terrorism was the enemy of religion.

"I wish that your voice will become the prevailing voice of the whole region, of all people," said Peres. "It's right, it's needed, it's promising."

Mr. Saki Mohammed

Your information is hundred 'persent' wrong.  Sukornoputri was the daughter of President Ahmed Sukarno.  How was she a non-muslim?  Please also check the spelling of percent.

Nigeria is an ethnically divided country.  When did it have a non-muslim president?  Mr. S. A. Hannan cites some other countries but didn't name a person.  I have another riddle for him.  In the Arabian land, Syed is a rare title.  Why in Bangladesh, we have so many Syeds?

In the entire history of Islam, there is not one example of a country of muslims letting a non-muslim person be President or army chief.
