[mukto-mona] Re: Inshallah {Bangla Article}

Mr Rahman

I enjoyed reading your article till I reached the last paragraph.
There, you finally succumbed to your islamic faith and sought refuse in
koran. Is it such a big deal that koran says 'go to china for knoledge
if needed'? Could not you say that it was another incoherent koranic
verse. Why is it that seldom a muslim intellectual does utter the
ultimate word of wisdom! How long will it take to make that quantum
jump for freedom!

[ALOCHONA] The chaos of Bangladeshi politics

Dear Alochoks

Just look at the picture below.

Will we ever learn to behave in a calm and orderly fashion?

If the AL cannot even control their own people how will they control the nation?

And everyone is crowding Hasina’s house! Not AL headquarters!

Just imagine if you were in the middle of that crowd. The noise, the yelling, the shouting!

This is the perfect example of our leaders perpetuating our flaws.

Hasina – you really are the Ma of Awami League!

BNP is no different…

[ALOCHONA] AL discards fly off the handle

AL discards fly off the handle

Courtesy Daily Star Report 19/11/08

Awami League's nomination of candidates in the upcoming parliamentary polls kicked up an uproar among grassroots leaders, activists and supporters in some constituencies, with protesters donning shrouds in the capital.

Aggrieved supporters of leaders who failed to get nominations demonstrated outside party chief Sheikh Hasina's residence Sudha Sadan at Dhanmondi yesterday. They chanted slogans demanding cancellation of nominations ignoring the proposals from grassroots level party committees for the constituencies concerned.

Wearing shrouds, supporters of Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan, who has not been nominated for Chadpur-4 constituency, demonstrated there from morning till afternoon, demanding party ticket for him.

Reports received from different districts said a number of grassroots leaders resigned protesting the party nominations.

Our Patuakahli correspondent reports: A section of leaders and activists of Galachipa units of the AL and its wings protested nomination of Golam Maula Roni for Patuakhali-3 constituency. Some leaders submitted resignation to the district AL president.

In their resignation letters, they said the party selected its candidate ignoring grassroots' proposal for nominating AKM Jahangir Hossain.

In Chandpur, leaders and activists of the AL and its front organisations vandalised party offices protesting nomination of Shafiqur Rahman for Chandpur-4 constituency.

They burnt an effigy of Shafiq, held rallies and formed a human chain in the district town, demanding party ticket for Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan.

Reports from Jhenidah said aggrieved party men ransacked the district AL and Moheshpur upazila AL offices.

Police arrested five grassroots leaders.

The demonstrators demanded re-considering the nominations.

In Rajshahi, several hundred AL men held protest meetings, formed a human chain, and observed a token hunger strike. They deplored ignoring the grassroots' selection of candidates, and threatened to 'nominate' them.

A report from Dinajpur said protesters barricaded Dinajpur-Bochaganj road for several hours demanding party ticket for Shatish Chandra Roy for Dinajpur-2 constituency.

In Noagoan, demonstrators called for change of the nomination given for Noagaon-4 constituency.

A report from Bogra said AL leaders and activists formed human chain and observed a token hunger strike protesting nomination of candidates for Bogra-2, 3 and 5 constituencies, ignoring the grassroots' proposals.

Moreover, reports of protests were received from Sylhet, Mymensingh, Narail, Khulna, Satkhira, Pabna, Kushtia, Shairatpur, Nilphamari and some other districts.

[ALOCHONA] Kashmir votes for democracy, development, not India

Kashmir votes for democracy, development, not India

By Krittivas Mukherjee

SRINAGAR (Reuters) - A good turnout at the start of Jammu and Kashmir elections may mean separatists misread a desire for development and democracy, analysts and voters said on Tuesday, but is not necessarily a vote for Indian rule.

While it is too early to draw firm conclusions from Monday's first stage in a seven-part election across a very diverse state, the turnout in parts of the mainly Muslim Kashmir Valley was a surprise for separatists who had heatedly called for a boycott

This year has seen some of the biggest anti-India protests in the Kashmir Valley since an insurgency began in 1989, but voters like 70-year-old Abdul Ahad Bhat said they wanted to cast their ballots even though they had taken part in protest marches.

"Independence is a separate issue from the need for a better life, which a good administration can provide," he said. "So there is no contradiction if a Kashmiri votes today and goes out and raises Azadi (freedom) slogans on the streets tomorrow."

Turnout in the 10 seats contested on Monday across Jammu and Kashmir was 64 percent. More surprising perhaps was a turnout of 59 percent in three seats contested in the Kashmir Valley, up from around 55 percent in the same seats in 2002.

Previous elections have seen militants threatening violence to enforce their call for a boycott, and Indian soldiers trying to coerce people to vote. This time the militants said they would not interfere and the soldiers kept a lower profile.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the separatist All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference which had called for a boycott, questioned the official figures and said free and fair voting was impossible in the presence of hundreds of thousands of troops.

But more mainstream political parties appeared to have won some listeners by arguing that the need to choose good government that can build roads and improve civic amenities would not necessarily undermine the independence movement.

"This appealed to the people -- for them development still is the immediate need, said Noor Ahmad Baba, dean of social sciences faculty in Kashmir University. "They know independence is a higher, time-consuming goal."
"It means ... the Hurriyat leadership does not have a finger on the pulse of the people. Yet this will not undermine the separatist movement because the political parties clearly delineated the freedom struggle from these elections."
The biggest surprise came in the separatist stronghold of Bandipora, with turnout reaching 57 percent on Monday, up from 31 percent in 2002, when militant threats almost certainly kept many people away. The mountains around the town had been a hideout for militants from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

Many voters said they still wanted independence as firmly as ever, but experts said a successful election across Kashmir would give the state and central government the chance to offer better governance and defuse the independence movement to some extent.

At least 42 people were shot dead by police when hundreds of thousands of Kashmiri Muslims took to the streets this year shouting "Azadi" (freedom).
"It needs to be seen how New Delhi leverages this election," Baba said, adding better governance might only temporarily temper the desire for independence in Kashmir, where more than 42,000 people have been killed during a two-decade-long revolt.

Political columnist Ghulam Nabi Khayal says Kashmiri Muslims will wait and watch for a while. "If they get nothing this time, the Hurriyat will use them," he said.

[mukto-mona] Humans share kangaroos genes - does this surprise anyone?

Humans share kangaroos genes ― does this surprise anyone?

A.H. Jaffor Ullah

Science deals in figuring out the truth – a lot of truth.  Truth is beautiful; therefore, science is inherently beautiful.  Is it a small wonder that the modern civilization's foundation is anchored to scientific principles?

When we see the marvels of science, we are simply awed.  On the macroscopic side, the tallest building stands erect majestically because the laws of physics, mechanics in particular, is used both by architects and builders to defy the gravitational pull of the earth; consequently, the Empire State Building, the Eifel Tower, and Taj Mahal could stand erect all these years. Microscopically speaking, the nucleotide sequence (read gene) homology between mouse and man also makes us wonder how these two species are interrelated!

When I read today (November 18, 2008) in the Net from a Reuter's science report in which it was mentioned that humans have a lot of kangaroo genes in their chromosomes, was I surprised?  Not at all.  Any student or person, who think Charles Darwin's scientific theory of evolution is the only logical explanation of origin of species, will surely admit that human beings have not evolved suddenly as the biblical account will lead us to belief ― based on a blind belief system.

As per Judeo-Christian belief, God created humans about 6,000 years ago.  However, science is at odds with this figure.  The Australian marsupial, kangaroo, had evolved about 150-170 million years ago.  The blind belief systems of the world originating from Middle East would, however, lead you to believe that about 6,000 years ago all the species have evolved simultaneously.  Therefore, all the fossil records have no meaning whatsoever as per the religious schools of thoughts.

Any reputable astrophysicists will however tell you that the age of the universe is about 5-6 billion years.  This fact is at variance with the believers of any monotheistic religion such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  The religious scholars would propound that the earth is hardly 6,000 years old.  Now, who is correct?  Astrophysicists or the practitioners of the monotheistic religions?  You be the judge.

Evolutionary biologists had estimated that the simplest life, prokaryotes, had evolved about 3.8 billion years ago.  The process of photosynthesis through which simple energy rich compound such as hexose (sugar) could be made by sunlight and a bunch of enzymes (catalytic proteins) had evolved in water borne microbes such as cyanobacteria or photosynthetic bacteria about 3 billion years ago.  It took about 1 billion years after the emergence of photosynthetic apparatus in bacteria for simple eukaryotes with mitochondria and chloroplast to have evolved.  Again, it took one billion years to evolve complex multicellular organism.  Therefore, about 1 billion years ago the complex eukaroytes were part of flora in waters.

The clock of evolution was running faster after the emergence of complex eukaryotes.  In the next 500 million years fish and other chordates had populated the earth's streams, lakes, rivers, and oceans. About 475 million years ago the plants were evolving; thereby, populating the ground.  About 400 million years ago, the insects and pre-gymnosperm (ancient seeded plants) made their way into our earth; thus making the world a bit crowded.  About 350-360 million years ago the amphibians started to evolve while 50 million years later, roughly about 300 million years ago, the reptiles were making their way into our earth.

The last 200 million years saw the emergence of first marsupials such as kangaroos, opossums, bandicoots, etc., which lacks placenta – the vascular organ that develops in female mammals during pregnancy lining the uterine wall.  From reptiles another line of animals – birds had evolved about 150 million years ago. On the plant side, the first batch of flowering plants started to grace our world about 130 million years ago.  The land-based dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago.

The first member of the genus Homo probably has evolved 2.5 million years ago.  The first member of human that had some semblance of modern man had evolved about 0.2 million or 200,000 years ago.  About 25,000 years ago, the last of the Neanderthal (ancestors of the modern man) ceased to exist.  About 6,000 to 8,000 years ago, human being learned how to do the primitive agriculture probably somewhere in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq and Southern Turkey).  The great religion, the first of the monotheistic class, Judaism, have evolved 2,500 years ago.  In a nutshell, this is the history of the accent of modern human being.

On the contrary, the blind belief system would tell you that the earth is about 6,000 years old and all the life forms had evolved simultaneously.  The scientists from early on wanted to know how the molecules of life for example amino acids (the building blocks of proteins and enzymes), nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA and RNA), etc., formed through abiogenesis (without inside the microbes or cells).  The famous 'Miller-Urey' experiments of 1953 showed that under reducing environment, which is the absence of oxygen, a mixture of gas and electric spark could give rise to amino acids.  This important experiment gave credence to the 'primordial Soup Theory' as propounded by J.B. S. Haldane and Aleksandr Oparin in 1920s.

I digressed a bit from the original theme of this article to give the readers a sense of how life forms have evolved over 3.5-3.8 billion years ago.  The advent of genomics – the study of genome or the entire nucleotide sequence of an organism is a new branch of biology that dates back to hardly 3 decades.  When I came to America in 1969 to study molecular biology, no one knew how to sequence the DNA or RNA.  Dr. Sanger, a renowned British biochemist, however devised a method to sequence the primary structure of Insulin (a small protein) for which he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1958.  Dr. Sanger invented a chemical method to sequence DNA for which he again received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1980.

The sequencing of DNA became a hot field starting from late 1970s and it is still continuing without any sign of a slowdown.  Many microbes, plants of agronomic value, and animals were targeted for genomics study.  The first microbe whose genes (DNA) were sequences was that of a bacteria by the name Escherichia coli. Next, on the eukaryotic side the genome of baker's yeast was completely sequenced.  Soon, the fruit fly's genome was sequenced.  Now, the genomes of many species of mammals are being sequenced and the results are being compared for sequence homology and the orderliness of many genes is being studied.

The Australian marsupial kangaroo was targeted by the Australian biologists for the studies of genomics. The government in Australia established a center by the name 'Centre of Excellence for Kangaroo Genomics.'  The Scientists from the center said they had for the first time mapped the genetic or nucleotide code of the Australian marsupials and found much of it was very similar to the genome for humans.

Biologists with genomics background had opined that there will be genetic similarities between kangaroo and human for sure but no one ever thought that clusters of genes will be same in these two groups of mammals.  Perhaps during speciation the gene clusters were transferred from species to species.  Dr. Jenny Graves, the center director of Australian kangaroo research put this finding this way; "We thought they'd be completely scrambled, but they're not. There is great chunks of the human genome which is sitting right there in the kangaroo genome."

In my view Dr. Graves should have said that the clusters of Kangaroo genes are sitting right in the human genome because humans have evolved from kangaroos.  Evolutionary biologists think that humans' primitive ancestors have parted from kangaroos about 150 million years ago.  Contrast this, if you may, with that of mice and humans.  Human's ancestors have diverged from mice about 70 million years ago.  The genomes of humans and mice show an astounding 95% plus sequence homology.  Similarly, the chimps show a lot more sequence homology with humans than it is with mice.  Conversely, the fruit fly and human genes show about 60% sequence homology.  These results clearly show that Darwin's theory of evolution is after all correct.  Darwin was a naturalist who studied diversity of traits among animals. This he did at the time when no one knew what a gene is!  In one hundred years or so the field of biology made so much progress that Darwin's theory is now being applied to molecular biology.  The fusion of evolutionary biology into molecular biology has spawned many new fields of study.

On a lighter side, it has not escaped my attention that humans still sport a pair of strong legs just as goats, cattle, kangaroos; consequently, humans could jump.  The basketball players, soccer player etc., are adept in jumping; therefore, the genes controlling the muscle strength of legs in humans must have originated from kangaroo or the species that is the ancestor of Australian jumping marsupials.  Try telling all these to a person who thinks that the biblical account of genesis is true.  You surely will get a strange response.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Fw: Misinterpretation of Islam by Humayun Ahmad in his column in Prothom Alo

Mr. Mufassil Islam;

At the end of this letter, I have pasted a copy of an article that was sent to me by a friend who lives in Germany. This is related to the subject of your conversation.  Please review this and give us your words of wisdom on that article.

Beyond that, I would like to add some of my own thoughts on this.

So called Islamic intellectuals with their bigotry, myopic visions and immense disrespect to other civilizations and cultures have given Islam and the Muslims a bad name today. Many of those intellectuals grew up receiving Islamic teachings from Class 8 pass mullahs. Some of them obviously obtained higher education beyond village Moktobs. That however, did not clear the brain washing they received during their childhood. These are the people who we find relentlessly trying to force their version of Islam through our throats.

View points expressed by intellectuals such as yourself strikes me to the fact that you all believe your perception is always superior to that of the rest who hold a different opinion on the same subject matter. I do not know you and you surely do not know me. Therefore, in reading my writing you can always blow me away as another idiot trying to sound smart. But in the case of Humayun Ahmed who is a PhD, an established author and a respected retired university teacher, how could you even think that you can surpass his intellectual abilities with yours? Why makes you think you know better than him? Yet better why do think you know better than anyone else. Your mindset suggests that all those people who are in favor of the statues are nothing but ignorant morons. What makes you develop such disrespect for others around you? You are asking people to not to do something that other people want to do. And in doing so they are not even harming anyone. This shows the general intolerance from people of your types to the rest who holds harmless opposing views. This is the root of all problems for the entire civilization today. This is the cause of all the wars (justified or not) and this is the cause why there is the continuous tension between your type of Muslims and the rest of World.

Let's go back to your mail; Egypt may not be a good (!) Islamic Country in your definition, but have you thought about the Holy land of Saudi Arabia and how blindly we perform some acts in our religion that supports idolatry. Think about the ritual of stoning the "Iblis" during Hajj? Are those stone models of "Iblis" not idols in your definition? Do not forget that this ritual of stoning is a mere carry over of the traditional Hajj ritual celebrated in Mecca prior to Islam when they worshiped the Statue of Allah inside the Harem Sharif.

People like you keep people like us scared and makes us worried about the future of our dear motherland. Not too long ago, Mullah Omar came to power with Taliban in Afghanistan with your type of values and ideas. Besides other valuable relics and artifacts of immense historic importance, they destroyed 2000 years old statue of Buddha which is not only a loss of History and tradition for the Afghans but also an irreparable loss for the whole mankind. In your letter, you said, "Human nature does not evolve with time. It is static", if you really feel that to be true, you and your types should move into the caves and "Be modern and seal all means of deviation and use your intellect to worship the Almighty - not using dead idols."

While reading your mail, I took a curious interest in your title "A human Rights Advocate". Based on the contents of your typical writings, I think you believe "your type of fundamentalist Muslims" is the only humans as you continuously advocate for them. Please do not forget there are other humans who follow the same religion with a much open mind or of different cultures and some of different religions. I think you should separate yourself from those "inferior" humans and revise your title slightly to call yourself "A Mullah and a fundamentalist Muslim Human Rights Advocate."

 Mannequins in Macca
This picture is from a store in a mall located within 100 yrds of  Kabba Sharif. Many stores
in this mall displys different kinds of  Mannequins to attract customes to sell products, just
as you would see in any modern mall all over the world. [some even shows  "naked"
female breasts to display bra & brief sets, similar to the picture:

If you have visited Macca lately, you must have noticed that space around Kabba at
Masjid-al-Haram is now sorrounded by world class 5-star hotels and a very large western
style shopping malls. Now when you walk out of the Al-haram, all you see is malls and big
hotels.  Makkah is supposed to be a place of spirituality, not materialism.  Any kind of
spiritual benefit one gets from the Kaba gets easily lost the second he/she step out and
walk into these buildings.  All you see is people eating, buying, selling, you totally don't
feel like you are in Mecca.  Many people, go to Hajj taking it as if it is some kind of
vacation area, people want the best hotel, the best food, drink, comfort etc.  You must be
personally knowing Hajis who took advantages of cheaper gold in Makka and Madina.

Masjid al-Haram in May 2007, Mecca [ see the high rise malls and hotels in the
background skyline] Have you ever seen the Jamaatis and bigots like  Mufti Fazlul
Hoq Amini or Saikhul Hadis Ajijul Haq ever protesting these "un-Islamic" practices
in Macca [Saudi arabia] ?

The Lalon sculpture is very much consistent with the tradition and culture of
Bangladesh. If use of  Mannequins can be approved in Macca Malls, why there is
so much fuss about the Lalon Sculpture at the Air Port? It is another FACE of
POLITICAL ISLAM i.e the use of religion for political purposes !

Again..the statutes are not representative of any modern art. This is the most ancient form of art in human history which culminated from idol worshipping pagan societies. We do not want people - especially naitives of a simple-minded society to be dragged into the vortex of justifying idolatry in any form or shape. The regime in Egypt is not any way Islamic and human rights record in suppressing democratic norms in that country is appalling. The Islamic scholars of Bengal is way far wiser than many Arabs and exceptions do not make laws. When world is moving ahead in art and culture in various electronic medias - we are bogged down in static idolisation of so called great leaders. When Moses was away - the Bible and Quran (Exodus and Bakara) say that the followers started worshipping the Cow. Please read the context. Human nature does not evolve with time. It is static. Be modern and seal all means of deviation and use your intellect to worship the Almighty - not using dead idols. You idolise Greats in minds - not by building statutes. The right salute to them is to fight and strive for the cause they are respected for. You democratic modern people - let's suggest a final solution - democratically. Let's have a poll. I bet most of us will condemn this culture. Now will you condemn our blind uncultured mass? Well - that's democracy - mass rules - learn to live with it.

I live in Cairo, the capital of an important Muslim country and there are statues of many Egyptian personalities of
the Islamic era in various street junctions. The same I have seen in Malaysia where statues of the national personalities
are erected in various places.

I do not think that a close minded conservative approach will take us anywhere ! The world is moving ahead whereas
we are thinking backwards. The sermons of ill informed and almost uneducated religious preachers cannot be the
yardstick of judging what is right or wrong in a modern 21st century society.

Shafqat

Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum A question has been sent to me to give my opinion on the one -column article of Humayun Ahmad, a well-known novelist of Bangladesh I feel that Humayun ahmad sahib has done injustice to Islam, Muslim and himself. My points are as follows:-( Those who know Bangla can read the attached articlein Bangla. Those who do not know, there is no problem as I have taken his point of view  in my submissions  )

!.He says that some madrasah student shouted and government backed down on statue issue and removed the under-constuction statue of a  famous poet and Baul Lalon Shah. This is not true that a few Madrasah students protested..Al leasr 50 million Muslims in two hundred thousand  masjids heard Khutba ( speech of Imam) of prayer leader in Juma congregation on last friday condeming statue making.

As against that I have seen human chains, one of 25 people and another of 15 teachers, may be there were a few others. It clearly reflects public opinion.

2.He has tried to justify staue making and honoring them in the name of Islam. He says that Prophet (sm) did not erase the picture of Maryam  from the wall of Kaba when he destroyed other idols of kabah..Is it any justification for statue makinf or placing them in public places for reminding heritage?.At the most it can be said that the Prophet honored the existing picture of the mother of Isa (AS)and it will not be proper for Muslims to break  statues existing before the advent of Islam of  religious personages.

Mr Ahmad has said from Bukhari that Ayesha used to play with dolls and Prophet (sm ) did not stop her.It at the most proves that small dolls are permissible for children as Imam Shawkani and Dr Qaradawi have said( Al Halal wal Haram Fil Islam by Dr Qaradawi) It does not prove that statue making and honoring them are permissible.
He failed  to mention numerous Hadith in Bukhari and other Hadith books which say that those who make statue are cursed and  will not enter Jannah.
3.We do not know whether  there are half statues of three poets and saints in Iran. However we know that all statues of Shah of Iran were destroyed by the people after his fall and nostatue was made of Imam Khomeni.
Even if some statues are there, these are violations. We should take notice that there is no statue our Prophet, or Sahabi or khalifas of Rashidun or Abbasid or Umayyad period, not even of Moghul rulers or Sultans of Bengal.
4.About Greek statue in Libiya it is also of Pre-Islamic period , may be it was not broken for some reasons but the Libiyans did not erect new statues.
5 About destruction of Buddha statue in Afganistan , Al-Azhar, OIC ,Qaradawi condemned the destruction of this old pre-islamic statue of Buddha. This does not mean that Islam likes statues and we should start making statues of our leaders, Imams and Sahabis and Khalifas and place them in public places.

6.Mr Humayun Ahmad's  piece is an emotional and one-sided and surely mis-interpretation of Islam.

In the entire history of Islam, there is not one example of a country of muslims letting a non-muslim person be President or army chief.
