[ALOCHONA] Re: President-elect Barack Obama would be declared Disqualified to be President?

Dear Alochoks

American laws that allow a sitting senator to run for President are
well established and based on practicality and sound political
tradition. Their laws have allowed many fine standing Senators and Governors to run for public office.

Bangladeshi laws have in the past allowed all types of idiots and
criminals into high office. We know very well the kind of Mayors who
are supported by AL and BNP. And if the AL and BNP won't change then
the law must be changed in order to enforce change.

Lets get to the point:

If a man like Barack Obama wanted to be a Mayor or Party Leader or
to be Prime Minister then AL and BNP would drown him in a torrent of
spit and bile.

The problem is not that this new law prevents great Mayors from
being great MPs. The problem is that AL and BNP don't produce great
MPs or great Mayors in the first place!

We don't need idiotic or criminal Mayors to become idiotic or
criminal MPs. Thank you Election Commission.

ec is working on the defaulters, not the crime suspects, for which ec probably needs court's 'verdict' as 'guilty'. do we have it? are we trying for it? can we try for it?

A very serious claim is being made here!

As long as one belongs to an Islamic political party, he cannot be excluded from participating in a national election in Bangladesh. In fact, it looks like a kind of eligibilaty guarantee.

The report does make us all wonder why is it that not a single Jamaati or Islamist (meaning those who use religion as a political tool) party has had his or her nomination papers examined by EC, and then rejected.

Your nomination papers can be rejected by EC if you have not paid taxes.  Fair enough! But participating in organized rape, pillage, and mass murder of innocent civilians in 1971 in some capacity or other is a ticket for automatic eligibility to contest in the national democratic election in 2008!

Is this election for real or is it a farce scripted by some diabolical joker?

Dear Deshpremiks (patriots),

We always blame Islamists that they are bad people. Our newspapers use 60% of total spaces to write against them. Our journalists (well known as sangatic not sangbadic) spend 80% of their energy to write against Islamic parties and Islam.  Please go to the following link and see who are the real patriots and who are the real criminals. You can find not a single from Islamic parties.

Re: [ALOCHONA] RE: Real picture of our political leaders

A bright future of Bangladesh is more important to me then our past history of instability.
We all carry some baggage from the past that only slow us down in decision making. The courage to get out of mold is not that easy. Islamic parties are intertwined with the politics of Bangladesh, where 80% of population are muslim. You have to understand the facts on the ground.
Everybody should have a place in the table if we really want a democratic government.
It can not be dictated by superior people from the west.

[mukto-mona] Fears for Londor doctor 'held hostage by family in Bangladesh in plot to make her marry a Muslim

Fears for London doctor 'held hostage by family in Bangladesh in plot to make her marry a Muslim'

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:56 AM on 09th December 2008

Dr Humayra Abedin

Secret call: Dr Humayra Abedin has phoned her boyfriend begging for help

The boyfriend of a doctor who has allegedly been beaten and held captive in Bangladesh under a forced marriage plot today made an emotional appeal for her release.

Humayra Abedin, 33, is allegedly being held hostage by her family since August in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.

Her Hindu partner says Dr Abedin's Muslim parents have bound and gagged her, handing out violent beatings to get her to end their relationship and marry a fellow Muslim.

The software engineer, who is afraid to reveal his identity, said he has grave fears for the safety of his girlfriend of five years after she made a secret phone call saying she wants to end her life and pleading with him to rescue her.

The 44-year-old Hindu Bangladeshi said: 'She was begging me to help her, saying she couldn't manage living there and that they were taking her to a mental hospital that day.

'Humayra said she had nothing to look forward to and that she'd die living there. It makes me so depressed and angry  -  I can't sleep and I don't feel like I'm living.'

Dr Abedin works at Whipps Cross University hospital in east London and the couple lived in East Ham.

His last direct contact with her was the distressing call on August 13. He believes Dr Abedin's parents admitted her to a mental hospital, under false claims of psychiatric illness, where she was held for two months.

She is now understood to be confined to a single room at the family home.

'Her life is in danger and they've told her they'd prefer her to die there rather than return to London. There are five people guarding her and they're forcing her to take sleeping medication. I just can't stand it,' he added.

Whipps Cross

Dr Abedin works at Whipps Cross University Hospital, east London and was in her last year of training to be a GP

The software engineer also claims Dr Abedin's family have made death threats against his relatives in Bangladesh in a bid to deter him from intervening.

'Humayra's father appears to be a really nasty man. Not only has he threatened me, someone also called me from Bangladesh telling me they would do something to my mother,' he said.

Dr Abedin, who was in her last year of training to be a GP, moved to Britain in 2002 to study at Leeds University.

A Met investigation was launched in June following allegations that the doctor's mother and uncle tried to hold her captive in London. Her partner and friends said Dr Abedin was then duped into returning to Bangladesh on August 5 after her mother falsely claimed she was seriously ill.

Dr Abedin's friend, Imon Sultana, who lives in Cambridge and went to medical school with her in Bangladesh, said: 'She's a fun loving girl and was the only friend I had.

'I know she was having trouble learning in her last year and had the extra family pressure on top of that but I'm so puzzled by this situation. She's not normally shy and can speak up for herself.'

Lawyers are hoping the new Forced Marriage Act can be used to influence the Bangladeshi courts to take action against Dr Abedin's parents. The Act, which came into force on November 25, means anyone responsible for arranging a forced marriage can be jailed for up to two years.

She is allegedly being held hostage in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka

The High Court in London served Dr Abedin's parents with a Forced Marriage Order this weekend over fears they were organising a wedding.

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) lawyers, acting for Dr Abedin's cousin, Dr Shipra Chaudhuri, are also pursuing the case in Bangladesh on her behalf.

The Bangladesh High Court has issued a fourth order to the parents  -  who are now in contempt of court  -  requesting they bring Dr Abedin before a judge on 14 December.

Anne-Marie Hutchinson, the solicitor acting for Dr Abedin here, said: 'The Act is not enforceable in Bangladesh but we are confident the pressure will push authorities. If her family does produce her at court, then she could be released in a secure building and be free to come back to the UK.'

Forced marriages campaigner, Shahien Taj, director of the Henna Foundation pressure group, said: 'I grew up in the UK and saw a number of Asian women taken abroad and never return; one girl committed suicide by throwing herself over a bridge; and parents of one boy murdered his girlfriend  -  all because of forced marriage issues.

When you grow up with that sort of stuff, you grow up in fear and can't do anything without thinking about the consequences. Humayra is lucky she has this help from her friends and solicitors here, as 80 per cent of high street solicitors wouldn't have even touched this case.'

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: 'While we do not comment on individual cases, forced marriage is an appalling and indefensible practice that the government is working hard to stop.'

ASK lawyers were not available for comment.

[ALOCHONA] Diesel Made From Palm Oil

Malaysia Mandates Diesel Made From Palm Oil

The Malaysian government said gas pumps in that country will be selling diesel fuel made from palm oil by 2010.

The use of palm oil as a transportation fuel is the latest effort by the Malaysian government to boost faltering prices of the commodity, which have taken a hit because of rising inventories and the worsening global economic crisis.
Malaysia is the world's second-largest producer of crude palm oil. The government there has implemented mandates for biodiesel made from the oil and will give aid to the industry to replant as part of a package to increase demand and stave off oversupply, the Alibaba News Channel reported.

The fuel is a blend of 5 percent palm oil and 95 percent conventional diesel fuel. The country's Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said by 2010, an estimated 500,000 tons of the fuel will need to be produced to sustain the palm oil industry. The mandate will require the production of 66 tons of palm-based biodiesel per year, the Malaysian National news Agency reported.

[mukto-mona] CPI(M) & human rights

The Kolkata Police disallowed the civil rights organisation, Masum, to use microphone  while holding a meeting in the Nandan-Rabindra Sadan-Academy of Fine Arts region. And that too on the day of World Human Rights Day. Commissioner of Police, Gautam Mohan Chakraborty who once riduculed human rights as ' hanuman rights' once again proved his canine subservience to mandarins of Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan, seat of West Bengal state committee of CPI(M).

Let's read a unique analysis on HR and global resources.

SR

Human Rights... For Who? 10 Dec 08 (http://www.stwr.org/the-un-people-politics/human-rights-for-who.html)

Human rights are increasingly viewed through the rhetoric of military intervention, democracy and political freedom, whilst the UN's pivotal role in securing social and economic rights in the developing world continues to be marginalised, argues Robin Willoughby

The 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be rightly lauded as a landmark in international attempts to formalize the rights and responsibilities between governments and their citizens. If we ask if the Declaration has proven a success, however, we need only glance at a few statistics; almost three billion people live in poverty on less than US$2.50 a day, and the number of hungry people actually increased this year to nearly one billion people.[1]  As the world reaped record levels of harvests in 2008, the most basic right to food is still denied to around 1 in 6 people on the planet.[2] But how did we get to this situation?

An answer to this can be simply put: on the international stage, the world's most powerful nations have prioritised those human rights associated with political freedom and peace and security, at the expense of those rights related to economic justice.

In the sphere of peace and security, the richest nations have used their political and military clout to pursue a highly defined and specific human rights agenda, highlighting the importance of themes such as intervention, democracy and political freedom. This trend is illustrated by the creation of such bodies within the United Nations (UN) as the Peace Building Commission and Counter-Terrorism Committee, as well as by the growth in interventionist peacekeeping missions. At the same time, more human rights bodies have been created under the purview of the UN Security Council, such as ad hoc tribunals to address human rights abuse in places such as Rwanda and Yugoslavia.[3]

International discussions on human rights are invariably focused on such themes as the danger posed by terrorism, threats to democracy in Zimbabwe or the need to invade Iraq in the name of human rights. This constricted view has also led to the widespread incorporation of military terminology into human rights semantics. 'Humanitarian intervention' can be used to describe a military invasion; 'muscular humanitarianism'[4] has become a label for aid and reconstruction work; and US-based human rights advocates recently described the need for a 'peace surge'[5] to solve complex political problems in Darfur.

New actors have moved into a combined human rights and humanitarian fold. The EU is developing a rapid reaction force as part of its human rights-based foreign policy, while NATO has incorporated a 'structural intervention force' to intercede in countries that are perceived as 'failed states', humanitarian emergencies or threats to peace and security. The World Bank has also entered into this new arena, incorporating a reconstruction and intervention arm into its operations, as witnessed in the aftermath of the South East Asian Tsunami in 2006.

The result of this prioritisation of democracy, peace and security and 'humanitarian' causes can be seen in a split between those human rights laws most palatable to the Global North, and those most urgently needed by the majority world. Unlike the one-sided prioritisation of individual human rights and security issues by the largest powers, economic and social rights have been severely sidelined.

The largest financial powers, led by the US and EU, now channel economic policy and implementation through the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Through these bodies, their founding members are able to impose a vision of human rights and economic development that conforms to their own geo-strategic and political vision. According to this thinking, the removal of trade barriers, growth of capital accumulation and empowerment of business will lead to an inevitable 'trickle-down' effect to the poor to secure human rights.

In contrast, the UN remains heavily marginalised as an actor within economic affairs. The UN agencies vested with the authority to ensure economic rights and freedoms have been downsized, marginalised or silenced as a voice in policy making. The UN Economic and Social Council - the UN body endowed with the authority to promote economic rights and full employment - has never been fully enabled to fulfil its mandate. Under pressure from the larger economic powers, much of its authority has passed to the preferred international institutions of the Global North: the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

A similar fate has befallen the UN Conference of Trade and Development (UNCTAD). During a series of conferences in the 1990s, the most powerful members of the UN - led by the US - threatened to cut funding to UNCTAD unless it conformed to the dominant ideological thinking of economic globalisation. Initially created in 1969 to offer a voice to the developing world and a negotiating forum on economic policy between rich and poor nations, the forum has now been sidelined and merely offers 'technical advice' to poorer countries.[6]

Other UN agencies such as the UN Development Program (UNDP) are currently threatened with further funding cuts or marginalisation. Last year, under a barrage of criticism from the US media (described as 'rising like Frankenstein's monster to challenge the power of the UN Secretariat'[7] and as 'cavorting with a roster of thug governments'[8]) the US Congress cut its funding to the agency, diverting the money instead to UN bodies that fit with the US vision of development and human rights, namely the UN Entrepreneurship Initiative and UN Democracy Fund.

Such a marginalisation of the UN role in economic development has resulted in an almost complete lack of intellectual pluralism in discussions of our future direction to secure economic rights. The model of free-market economic growth and the 'trickle down' theory of wealth to secure basic needs have been broadly accepted and institutionalised, at a time when poverty, inequality and hunger are increasing for the majority of the world according to the UN's own figures, in large part because of these very policies.

With human rights viewed through such a narrow prism, some analysts suggest that both the UN and other aid agencies could be perceived as a 'Trojan Horse' for the economic and political interests of the most powerful nations.[9] Following from this logic, it is perhaps little surprise that there has been an increasing distrust of UN staff and humanitarian workers in the field.

Rather than a focussing on a narrowly imposed view of human rights, the anniversary of the UN Declaration gives us the opportunity to take stock of global priorities. An agenda that promotes peace, security and democracy has resulted in a form of 'military humanitarianism' and security-based human rights that play into the hands of the most economically powerful. In addition, the promotion of the economic rights of the majority world has been institutionalised in the World Bank and IMF, leading to a highly ideological attempt to secure basic human rights.

To respond to these challenges, international governments should equally prioritise all of the rights and responsibilities in the UN Declaration to include those on economic justice, such as the right to adequate living and social protection, fair remuneration, and the right to adequate food and shelter. Such a holistic approach would help government and international bodies to tackle other complex human rights problems such as peace and security, terrorism and gender relations.

A rejuvenated UN has a key role to play in such a prioritisation of basic human rights. To achieve this aim, the UN should regain its independence as a forum for economic policy making. The organisation can only play a central role in global governance if it can act independently and incorporate different visions of economic development, rather than follow the ideological constraints of the World Bank and IMF. A much needed rethink on the future world economic direction would aid the UN's image in the eyes of those countries most in need of its help.

The recent coordinated bailout of the global banking system shows that if international governments feel there is sufficient cause then they can coordinate and act with remarkable speed. The 'bottom billion' excluded from the benefits of economic globalisation are now waiting for their own government bailout. It is through these policies that we can achieve the wishes of the original drafters of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: political pluralism, peace and security and true economic and social justice for all.

Bangladesh to open own Taj Mahal

By Mark Dummett
BBC News, Dhaka

Taj replica in Bangladesh, image from 5 December
Work on the replica was continuing just last week

A life-size replica of the Taj Mahal, often described as the world's most beautiful building, is due to open for visitors in Bangladesh.

The replica has been built by a Bangladeshi filmmaker. Ahsanullah Moni said he wanted his countrymen to experience the beauty of the Indian monument even if they were too poor to travel to see the original.

The 17th Century Taj was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved queen, Mumtaz Mahal. The emperor is buried next to his queen in the monument in the northern Indian city of Agra, which is visited by millions every year.

The $58m (£39m) replica has been built in Sonargaon, a small town in the Bangladeshi countryside.

'Marble and diamonds'
Mr Moni, who is a successful director of Bangladeshi films, says he hopes his replica, which has been built an hour's drive from the capital Dhaka, will also attract foreign visitors.

Taj Mahal
Millions of people flock to the Taj Mahal every year
It took 20 years and 20,000 workers to build the original Taj. Thanks to modern technology, construction of Mr Moni's Taj has taken five years and fewer people.
But it has been neither easy nor cheap.
Mr Moni says he has imported marble and granite from Italy and diamonds from Belgium.

Architects were sent to India to copy the dimensions of the original. Work on the surrounding grounds and ponds has still not been completed.

Only then will Bangladeshis be able to judge whether Mr Moni has truly copied the beauty and purity of the original Taj Mahal.
