2. MP who spends money to get vote and does nothing for local people, then gets involved in corruption?

3. PM and ministers, who has little education/skills/direction, to take good decisons for the country?

4. Businessman/industrialist / Bankers / CEO, who manufacture/ plan / introduce  and sell rotten products and do not care for the common men?

5. Bdeshis, who get a job overseas/ settle abroad and do little for the country?

6. Sk. Mujib, who did not realize that he has no quality to run the country/ but still cretaed so much mess for the nation and nourished
corruption, dictatorship, anarchy, violence, maladministration, chaos, shallowness?

7. Hyperactive/ emotional/ ill-informed  party men and women, who support their corrupt leaders without any constructive criticism?

8. a bunch of self-made intellectuals, who criticize islam, tries to be a mini-bertrand russel / do not offer any positive contribution/ and follow other country's culture/ philosophy..... without realizing the long-term complications... for our children and grand-children?

[ALOCHONA] Forced Marriage - Cyrus

Cyrus..and Other Readers:

Sorry for delayed response further to my posting on the issue. I should have clarified the matter a bit further and I do apologise for that. I refer to the instructions from Quran in this matter and Hadith in this matter. I request you to read the following carefully and in entirity.

Please note the following references first:

        A.

The Quran prohibits Muslim men from marrying unbelievers and associators, saying that it is better for them to marry believing women:

And do not marry the idolatresses until they believe, and certainly a believing maid is better than an idolatress woman, even though she should please you; and do not give (believing women) in marriage to idolaters until they believe, and certainly a believing servant is better than an idolater, even though he should please you; these invite to the fire, and Allah invites to the garden and to forgiveness by His will, and makes clear His communications to men, that they may be mindful. S. 2:221 Shakir

B.

The next text commands Muslim men not to remain married to unbelievers (as some of them were already married before the previous verse was given)
O you who believe! when believing women come to you flying, then examine them; Allah knows best their faith; then if you find them to be believing women, do not send them back to the unbelievers, neither are these (women) lawful for them, nor are those (men) lawful for them, and give them what they have spent; and no blame attaches to you in marrying them when you give them their dowries; and hold not to the ties of marriage of unbelieving women, and ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. That is Allah's judgment; He judges between you, and Allah is Knowing, Wise. S. 60:10 Shakir

C.

The word for unbeliever comes from the term kafir, which refers to one who makes kufr. According to the Quran, the Jews and Christians (specifically the latter) fall under these categories of mushrik and kafir

D.

And the Jews say, 'Ezra is the son of ALLAH,' and the Christians say, 'the Messiah is the son of ALLAH;' that is what they say with their mouths. They only imitate the saying of those who disbelieved (kafaroo) before them. ALLAH's curse be on them! How they are turned away. They have taken their priest and their monks for lords besides ALLAH. And so have they taken the Messiah, son of Mary. And they were not commanded but to worship the One God. There is no God but HE. Holy is HE far above what they associate (yushrikoona) with Him! They seek to extinguish the light of ALLAH with their mouths; but ALLAH refuses but to perfect HIS light, though the disbelievers (al-kafiroona) may resent it. HE it is Who has sent HIS Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that HE may make it prevail over every other religion, even though the idolaters (al-mushrikoona) may resent it. S. 9:28-33 Sher Ali

E.

The following sahih hadith confirms the view that Christians are both mushriks and kafirs:
Narrated Nafi':
Whenever Ibn 'Umar was asked about marrying a Christian lady or a Jewess, he would say: "Allah has made it unlawful for the believers to marry ladies who ascribe partners in worship to Allah, and I do not know of a greater thing, as regards to ascribing partners in worship, etc. to Allah, than that a lady should say that Jesus is her Lord although he is just one of Allah's slaves." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 63, Number 209)
F.

Yet the following verse says that Muslim men can marry women who are Jews and Christians! (None other from any other faith)
Today the good things are permitted you, and the food of those who were given the Book is permitted to you, and permitted to them is your food; Likewise believing women in wedlock, and in wedlock women of them who were given the Book before you if you give them their wages, in wedlock and not in licence, or as taking lovers. Whoso disbelieves in the faith, his work has failed, and in the world to come he shall be among the losers. S. 5:5 Arberry

Conclusion:

From the abve points what we can gather that Jesus Christ or Hazary Eisa(pbuh) was sent as a Prophet and there were true Nasara (Christians) during Prophet Muhaammad (pbuh)'s time including that of Khadiza (AS)'s own cousin who used to live with the Prophet and his family and later reverted to Islam. These Christians followed One True Allah and not TRINITY which was preached by St. Paul - like St. Paul preached many other things like Easter, Christmas etc. This Monotheistic faith was also practised my many Jews as well and the vast majority still do. On the contrary even then there were Christians who practised Trinity. Among the present day Christians I would say the closest Sect of Christianity in Islamic Nasara perspective are the Jehova's Witnesses. Islam allows to marry these Christians and Jews if they dod not preach Trinity as it is easier to bring them closer to Islam quickly and it is also easier to live life together as they do not Worship anyone else apart from the One Creator as Preached BY Jesus and David. But this does not apply to Hindus or Sikhs or other faiths - Primarily because we are not confirmed about any of the Hindu gods and definitely none of the Sikh Gurus was a Prophet even though some of their sects do preach monotheistic ideas - as Hindus do 'Sharbang Khalidang Brahma'. Islam does not believe in the Hindu form of One God where u r confusing oneness with multiples. Sikhism's Oneness is diluted by the 10th Guru as they Bow before Gurugranth Shahib. So, our beloved Prophet (pbuh) did marry Christian and Jew but I think ur inference abt his marrying ppl of other faiths and the Islamic instructions not to marry ppl of other faiths required clarification and I think I have delivered that. I personally believe it is extremely difficult to live an Islamic family life in peaceful coexistence if I am a religious Muslim and my partner is either an atheist or a devoted follower of another faith. It becomes even more complicated if children are involved.

Yours sincerely,

Hi

Thanks for the information.

Hope it explains why Pintu has been nominated.

Or why Saifur Rahman is running again in Sylhet 1 even though he is
probably dying.

Or why Mahmudur Rahman (I actually like him a lot) thinks Hasan
Masud Chowdhury is unfit to run ACC but Tarique is fit to run BNP.

Many in my family - my own father too - will vote BNP. But they are
not activists. When activists like you start to confess to the mess
inside BNP and deal with it you will really be worthy of the legacy
of Ziaur Rahman.

Till then it nonsense as usual. For every politcial party. And
millions of voters will vote simply on a stop AL or stop Jamat basis.

[ALOCHONA] Message from Dr. Hasan Mahmud's election blog (Chittagong-6, Rangunia)

Hi Everyone

We a group of Bangladeshi students from all around the globe would
feel privilege to introduce a distinct candidate, Dr. Hasan Mahmud for
national election of Bangladesh, 2008.

Dr. Hasan is contesting from Chittagong-6, Rangunia. Dr. Hasan came
back from Europe after higher studies. He got three master degrees and
a PhD in environmental science. As part of his election campaign we
are bringing you Dr. Hasan's election blog at
http://hasanmahmud08.blogspot.com/ .

Our apology to the viewers for last few days, as you may have seen a
warning sign at the blog address. It is because someone reported Dr.
Hasan's blog as spam. However, one of our friends from Google helped
us to restore the blog. Thanks to all our friends who are volunteering
from different part of the globe with their valuable time. The number
of volunteers crossed over 300 from initial 13.

You may appreciate inclusion of IT in Dr. Hasan's campaign. We are
eager to hear from you. We have services such as text messaging, voice
and video chat, conference call at gtalk or any other messengers or
via any telephone services. If you want to talk to us in person we can
call you almost anywhere in the world by a local volunteer in your
region. We shall listen to you, we want to learn from you. You can
contact us at hasanmahmud08 @ gmail . com

We invite you to explore on the ability of Dr. Hasan to bring changes.
That is the choice we face now. We can chose hope over fear, unity
over division, new Ideas over old, innovative leadership over
ineffective leadership, new kind of politics over ancient version.
Thus, we can easily choose Dr. Hasan over his competing mate
Sala-Uddin-Qader (also known as SAKA Chy.).

Our latest post presents Dr. Hasan's dignified responses to all the
vulgar languages and devil forces used by his competing mate. Please
visit http://hasanmahmud08.blogspot.com/

Regards,
Mohammed Jubaer Arif on behalf of
Bangladeshi student support group of Dr. Hasan Mahmud.

[ALOCHONA] Treatment Fund for Bangladeshi in USA

Dear Community Members:

We have a big community hear in the VA, DC and MD area. We also have some associations. However, we do not have a common/organizational fund for emergency treatment of any of our community members.

Here, I am talking specially about serious and expensive medical problems like cancer, bone marrow transplant, bone marrow transplant donor etc. So, if anyone/any organization would take this initiative where we can contribute a regular basis or anybody would like to contribute, they can do so anytime.

I hope organizations/volunteers would come forward for this good reason.

I highly appreciate taking your time to read this email. My special thanks goes to those who would take this initiative forward.

Between 2004 and 2006, Siemens COM paid approximately $5.3 million in bribes to government officials in Bangladesh in connection with a contract with the Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB) to install mobile telephone services. The. total value of the contract was approximately $40.9 million. The payments were made to three business consultants pursuant to sham agreements calling for services associatedwith the mobile telephone project. The ultimate recipients of the payments included the son of the then-Prime Minister in Bangladesh, the Minister of the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications in Bangladesh, and the BTTB Director of Procurement. In addition, Siemens Limited Bangladesh, a regional company, hired relatives. of two other BTTB and Ministry of Post and Telecom officials. Most of the money paid to the business consultants waS routed through correspondent accounts in the United States, with at least one payment originating &om a U.S. account. Since approximately September 2004, a Siemens business consultant who served as a principal payment intermediary on the Bangladesh bribe payments has been resident in the United States. At least $1.7 million of the bribe payments made through this intermediary were paid into a Hong Kong bank account while the intermediary was residing in the United States.

[mukto-mona] Thai Repression

Thailand Muzzles the Internet by John Berthelsen 23 Dec 08 (http://asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1625&Itemid=185)

A shaky government, citing lese majeste laws, blocks more than 1,000 websites

Thailand's increasingly prickly Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has issued instructions blocking more than 1,300 websites in 23 countries from Australia to Vietnam over the past several months, according to Freedom Against Censorship Thailand, a press freedom group, which made public a list of the sites over the weekend.

As Thailand's political crisis has worn on, restrictions and media harassment have continued to increase. The country ranks 124th in the Reporters Without Borders worldwide press freedom index, having fallen from 107th in 2007 and 59th in 2004.

After months of devastating political turmoil, the Democrat Party, headed by the Oxford-educated Abhisit Vejjajiva, was installed to head the government last week, ending more than three years in which allies of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra held royalist forces at bay. Vejjajiva has styled himself as a reformer, although he and his party have already come under considerable fire for the undemocratic way in which a raucous band of protesters paralyzed the country until a constitutional court declared the People's Power Party illegal under questionable circumstances. Ranongruk Suwanchawee was appointed the new Information and Communication Technology minister. The blocklists do not fall under her administration and reformers are waiting to see if she will review the bans and reverse any of them.

According to FACT, although no website may be blocked legally without court order, the Thai police and internet service providers often block as they wish. The "blocklists," as they are called, that were leaked to FACT cover seven months of actions by the authorities. They include court orders detailing applications of the Ministry authorizing most of the blocks and cite reasons of lese majeste, or insults to the royalty, and national security and are dated June 27, August 1, August 25 and December 9 signed by ICT ministry officers. Ironically, the PPP government that was blocking hundreds of websites on grounds of lese majeste was in a no-holds-barred squabble with the royalists for political primacy.

Thailand is hardly alone in Asia for blocking Internet sites. Last week, the New York Times was blocked across much of China, allowed only in hotels. According to a story on the affair by the New York Times' Keith Bradsher, the Chinese-language Web sites of the BBC, the Voice of America and Asiaweek, were also blocked, although they were reopened last Friday. Bradsher quoted an official with the government's International Press Center in Beijing as saying "It might be a technical problem." Malaysia has repeatedly threatened bloggers as well, but usually backed away from shutting them down.

Among the most famous, or infamous of the blocked sites in Thailand is of course YouTube, which was put on ice in July after it showed a 44-second series of pictures of the 81-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in one with a pink Afro and a red clown nose superimposed on his face.

Other blocked websites are located in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, the European Union, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Vietnam, the press freedom group said in a press release. Among them, apparently, is The Economist, which in its Dec. 6-12 issue carried a cover story titled 'The King and Them" and gave what it called "the untold story of the palace's role behind the collapse of Thai democracy" (although the story had been largely told repeatedly in Asia, and particularly by Asia Sentinel).

Although every site that was ordered blocked came under the lese majeste laws, FACT said that "It would appear, in fact, that the court did not examine each site before issuing its order but instead relied on the Ministry of Information and Communication's judgment. Although we have not yet found the opportunity to examine each website censored, as in the past, an eclectic mix of censorship has been revealed resulting in overblocking of many benign webpages."

Also blocked, FACT said, are weblogs referring to author Paul Handley's authoritative biography of Thailand's King Bhumibhol, The King Never Smiles, and its translation into Thai along with Thai Wikipedia entries. The book makes copious reference to the king's involvement in Thailand's political affairs for decades. Some 860 YouTube videos have also been blocked, far in excess of the blocking conducted by The Official Censor of the Military Coup. Some 200 pages mirroring those videos are also blocked, the organization said..

"Typically, web censorship in Thailand is conducted in secret," FACT said. "We think there is a right to know inherent in a free society. We call for transparency and accountability in government and freedom of expression, freedom of communication and freedom of association as fundamental human rights.

Bangladesh: Elections and Beyond

OVERVIEW

Bangladesh's 29 December 2008 general election is expected to end a two year military-enforced state of emergency and return the country to democratic governance. While an end to emergency rule and elections do not equal democracy, both are necessary preconditions for the country's stability. Through peaceful dialogue – an important achievement in its own right – the army-backed caretaker government (CTG) and the country's main political parties have reached agreements on many issues that could derail the elections. However, there are no guarantees that the election will take place on time, that all the major parties will participate, or that all of them will accept the results. Even a successful election will only be the initial step to developing a more effective democracy in Bangladesh. The immediate goals for all stakeholders – including the international community – should be to ensure that all registered political parties contest and that the elections are credible and free of violence. Beyond the general election the political parties will face the challenges of making parliament work and contending with an army seeking a greater say in politics.

By late 2007 the CTG realised that reforms were easier to advocate than execute. Corruption had worsened despite its anti-graft campaign, and the political parties refused to undertake reforms or go to the polls without their jailed leaders. Faced with a failing reform agenda and declining popular support, the CTG was forced to abandon its "minus two" policy of sidelining the two major political parties' leaders, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, and negotiate an exit strategy with the parties. Talks overcame many obstacles to elections contested by all the major parties, including the release of Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, compulsory political party registration and the timing of the upazila (sub-district) polls. The upazila elections are slated for late January 2009, although their schedule is disputed.

The government has met many of the technical requirements to enhance poll credibility, but it has fallen short on several political conditions. New legislation aims to minimise the influence of ill-gotten wealth and a new electoral roll of over 80 million voters has been widely praised. However, a longstanding state of emergency curtailing fundamental rights, which may be lifted only after campaigning is under way, threatens the credibility of the election.

The political situation is complex and fragile. Bangladesh's two largest political parties, the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), are approaching the election from opposite positions. The Awami League, viewed as the frontrunner, is eager to contest the polls promptly and with few preconditions. The BNP is in disarray. The party threatened to boycott if emergency laws barring many of its members from standing in the election were not rescinded. BNP boycott threats have already forced one poll delay, and party leaders maintain a boycott is still an option if the state of emergency is not lifted by 17 December. If the election goes ahead without the BNP, its staunch ally and Bangladesh's largest Islamist party, the Jamaat-e Islami, believes it could go it alone and run as the default option for Bangladeshis who would otherwise vote for the BNP.

A number of factors could adversely affect the elections and their aftermath. Although the election laws make electoral malpractice more difficult, the Election Commission (EC) has been reluctant to enforce them. Allegations of rigging could spark a party boycott or political violence; the continued emergency could prompt rejection of results. Technical flaws on election day with ballots or the voter roll could cause a delay or require re-polling in some areas. Islamist militants like the Jamaat'ul Mujahideen Bangladesh are still active, even in Dhaka, and pose a threat not only to the election but also to the country's longer-term security.

Keeping the military in the barracks will require the new government and the opposition to seek accommodation with each other and the army. Dialogue with the CTG has demonstrated to the political parties that they can advance their interests through peaceful negotiations. If civilian rule is to succeed in Bangladesh, cooperation must be placed before confrontation. A return to zero-sum politics by the parties could be an excuse for the army step in yet again. Only Islamist forces stand to gain from another military government.

In terms of next steps:
  • The caretaker government should completely lift the state of emergency before the elections and refrain from issuing presidential ordinances that restrict the rights and freedoms necessary for credible democratic elections.
  • The Election Commission should appropriately enforce the election law and the election code of conduct; immediately initiate a public information campaign on voting procedures, in particular clarifying what identification is needed to vote; publish results in a timely and transparent fashion and at all levels of the election administration; and refrain from positioning security personnel in polling stations or in a manner that interferes with the election process.
  • Election observers should consider the impact of the state of emergency or any emergency provisions issued as presidential ordinances on poll credibility before issuing public statements.
  • The political parties should abide by the election laws; continue to seek solutions to electoral-related issues through peaceful negotiations with the CTG and other parties; and accept the election results if independent election observers deem the elections free and fair.
  • The international community should pressure all parties to play by the rules and accept the results, as well as encouraging the new government and parliament to continue institutional reforms. The European Union (EU) should consider Instrument for Stability funding to support such steps.
