[mukto-mona] Congratulation to people of Bangladesh and Awami League

Congratulation, peoples verdict is pronounced, loud and clear. People's determination was mighty in favor of change. Change, which will make their dream come true. Bangladesh Awami League must take this challenge of change with maximum passion, sincerity, genuineness, honesty and extreme seriousness and most importantly with great humbleness.

More often than not, party that looses election does the sole search to find the root cause of their failure. However, this time the winner has to do the sole search to have a comprehensive realization with an unprecedented landslide victory in their hand. I earnestly hope Bangladesh Awami League will truly grasp the very reason of their unparallel extraordinary victory and work toward to achieve the towering goal people have set for them.

The comparison of election result of 1991, 1996 and 2001 beyond doubt not applicable to this year 2008 election. Avalanche election result of 29 December of 2008 is more of what the nation has observed once before with unparalleled peoples verdict of 1970 election. Similar to 1970, this year election, it was more of a referendum then ordinary election that has meager win or loose.

Peoples decree of 1970 general election held on December 7 of 1970 and provincial assemble election which took place on 17 December of 1970 was unmistakable unambiguous. Result was overwhelmingly unequivocally of ending the oppression and tyranny of Pakistani junta. People's aspiration for their autonomy and liberty reflected through the victory of Bangabandhu and Bangladesh Awami League, Nouka (Boat) become the symbol of their freedom. Jingle of liberation become the mantra of peoples verdict. Referendum (Election) of 1970 gave us a country, a flag, an anthem to sing and a constitution to follow, all of which tormented in the hands of anti liberation forces led by four party alliances. People gave another verdict on December 29 to bring the lost glory back, establish the vision of liberation, and to establish Bangabandhu's Shonar Bangla.

Once again, after 38 years later in another December Nouka (boat) and Bangladesh Awami League become the symbol of liberation. Liberation from oppressive Jamat-BNP four party alliances misrule. Resurrection of defeated anti liberation forces under direct supervision of BNP led alliance government. Unfortunately supporting terrorist fundamentalist groups who sell Islam the religion of peace for their skimpy political gain become Khaleda Zia's political asset. Oppression, injustice, unequal treatment, overwhelming corruption, absolute failure of running the government for the people become the norm of the day. Now people have spoken firmly once again and everyone must take note of that.

People's verdict was genuine reflection of their aspiration to run the country under Bangladesh Awami Leagues stewardship to free them. It is not just an ordinary victory but also a clear mandate to liberate them from poverty, corruption, nepotism, anti liberation forces, miscreants of muscle power, black marketers and wholesome misuse and misrule of power.

During every single election campaign meeting Sheikh Hasina encouraged people to give another mandate to Awami League similar to one they delivered in 1970. She said "we achieved our independence in this month of December, let us have another victory in this month of triumph", citizens answered confidently and they gave more then what she asked for, now it is Bangladesh Awami Leagues turn to upheld their dream and complete the unfinished call of –Dittio Biplob- of our great leader Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Being the daughter of Bangabandhu, the father of the nation you must do what he could have done but could not do because of his martyrdom. I do rest my complete faith upon you and hope Bangladesh Awami League will not fail to comply with people's aspiration. We will not ask you for anything but we will walk with you to make success of your program of "Din Bodoler Ishtahar".–This victory is not about Awami League or Mohajoth BUT this victory is all about people and only people and Bangladesh Awami League must remind them selves everyday every time they make a public decision.

Awami League must upheld and be vocal to establish human right (right to food, work, health, education and housing) trial of murderous war criminals, corruption free society, fiscal emancipation, institutionalization of democracy, giving all out institutional support to farmers and establishing the right of fisherman to water (Jol Jar Jola Tar), truthful liberation of judicial system, freedom of speech and expression, especially press, right to information, emancipation and empowerment of women's right, enrolling young generation into your vision of 2021 of digital Bangladesh all of which can come true with little sacrifice, right planning and sincere implementation. Right planning and sincere implementation can be done only with honest competent brilliancy. Awami League must find its way to contain its victory and go forward with great self-humiliating humbleness.

Vigilance is the eternal price of liberty.  People of Bangladesh must remain alert and proactive. Every member of Bangladesh Awami League must remain watchful of his or her act. No mercy, no compassion and no clemency for disguised immoral people. Bangladesh has started its forward march and Bangladesh Awami League must take the lead. Bangladesh Awami League as a political party has to bring the changes in politics whether that is internal or external; Awami League has to set the exemplary democratic norms within and beyond its boundary.

People's confidence and faith upon Bangladesh Awami League and its leadership must not be forgotten. Having this mandate in their shoulder, Bangladesh Awami League must act with humility and gratitude, ask not what they can have but mull over what they can deliver for the people of Bangladesh and make prosperity of commoners their priority.

Congratulation to people of Bangladesh and the winning team of Bangladesh Awami League once again. My earnest pray to almighty -Tomar Potaka Jara Dao Tara Bohibara Dao Shokhti-

Yours truly,

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Jamaat losing!

This is a joyful event to see that people of Bangladesh are rejecting anti-Bangladesh forces en masse. I hope Awami League will remember that people voted for them to revive Bengali Nationalism, not to make a 'jote' with Jamat as they did in the past. If they can bring back Bengali Nationalism, as Sheikh Mujib did, their prospects are endless. I am hoping for the best. My heartfelt congratulations to Awami League. Joy Bangla.

I also heard Jamaat's Mujahidi, Kamruzzaman, Saidi - all lost. Not 100% confirmed yet.

[mukto-mona] Bangladesh Poll: Encouraging Signs amongst Uncertainties

[The election quite significantly saw heavy turn out,
maybe around 70%, reflecting strong popular
aspirations to see an end to the military-bureaucratic
rule, ostensibly meant to do away with "political"
corruptions, enjoying supports from both the local
elite and Western powers.
An ill-disguised attempt by the military backed by its
local and international backers to put Md. Yunus, the
lone Nobel Laureate from Bangladesh, in the driver's
seat through some sort of "controlled" democracy has
fallen flat on its face.
Even though the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina has
quite a bit reneged on its initial promise, on the
morrow of the Liberation, of a "secular" regime; its
victory denotes a defeat for the menacing radical
Islamist forces.

Apart from tackling the issue of poverty and corrupt
misgovernance, there would be a strong demand to
reverse the Islamist constitutional amendments made
during late Zia's military regime and also a public
trial of the murderous "collaborators" (with the
genocidal Pak regime led by the military dictator
Yahya Khan) in the Liberation War of 71.
It is rather unlikely that any of these expectations
would be fulfilled without strong grassroots pressure.
The BNP led by Ms. Khaleda Zia - widow of the military
dictator Zia-ur Rahman, also would expectedly hurl
charges of "rigging". The Jatiyo Party led by another
military dictator Ershad may also join hands. But it
remains to be seen whether they resort to the boycott
of the Parliament, as the losers almost invariably did
in the recent decades.
The military would also try to maintain its dominance
through behind-the-scene manipulations.

Despite all these, this is a welcome development
opening up at least some, even if uncertain,
opportunities for a move forward.
One would like to hope against hope that Big Brother
India would respond in a matured manner.]

Ex-Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina Wins Election

By Ed Johnson

Dec. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Former Bangladesh Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed's political alliance was
swept back to power in national elections that ended
two years of military-backed emergency rule in the
South Asian country.
With 267 of 300 seats declared, Hasina's Awami League
has a parliamentary majority, S.M. Asadujan, the
Election Commission's public relations officer, said
by telephone today from the capital, Dhaka. The
commission hasn't released final results.
With ballot papers still being counted, the Awami
League had 175 seats, winning a landslide victory over
the Bangladesh Nationalist Party that took 23, the
English-language Daily Star newspaper reported on its
Web site.
The ballot comes after a military-backed interim
government declared emergency rule in January 2007,
pledging to stamp out graft and end clashes between
the two main parties. Telephone calls to Awami League
and BNP officials weren't immediately answered. Final
results are expected to be declared at about 7 a.m.
local time, Asadujan said.
Yesterday's ballot is the first national election in
Bangladesh since 2001, when the BNP won by a
landslide.
Hasina and her main rival, BNP leader Khaleda Zia,
have dominated the country's politics for the past
decade.
Street Fighting
Street fighting between their supporters left dozens
of people dead as the parties campaigned for elections
scheduled for January 2007.
An interim government, backed by the army, canceled
the ballot, declared a state of emergency and arrested
hundreds of politicians for alleged graft. Zia and
Hasina, who were among those detained, say the
corruption allegations were politically motivated.
The BNP yesterday complained of irregularities at 220
polling centers, the Star reported, citing party
official Rizi Ahmed.
A "smooth" transition between governments is needed
for Bangladesh's $72 billion economy to grow at the
forecast rate of 6.5 percent in the year to June 2009,
according to the Asian Development Bank.
A return to a democratically elected civilian
government and an end to confrontation between the
Awami League and BNP are essential to stop increasing
Islamic radicalization in the Muslim-majority nation,
according to the International Crisis Group.
Bangladesh has had at least five military coups since
the country's creation in 1971 and "only Islamist
forces stand to gain from another military
government," the Brussels-based group said in a report
this month.
Security forces say they have arrested more than 1,000
suspected militants since a nationwide bombing
campaign by the banned group Jamaatul Mujahedeen
Bangladesh more than three years ago.
The group remains active, posing a threat to
Bangladesh and the region, according to the ICG.
India earlier this month asked the interim government
to stop militants using Bangladeshi territory to stage
attacks across the border.

Bangladesh eunuchs to vote in first elections
1 day ago
DHAKA (AFP) — Among the millions of new voters in
Monday's Bangladeshi elections will be some 100,000
hijras -- cross-dressing, pre- and post-operative
transsexuals -- allowed to cast ballots for the first
time.
The male-to-female transsexuals are among 32 percent
of the impoverished nation's 81 million voters for
whom participating in the elections, the first since
2001, will be a new experience.
Hijra social worker Joya Shikder, herself a
transsexual, said the move spelled a positive change
for the conservative Muslim country.
"We've always been overlooked in previous elections,"
Shikder said. "It's exciting to be given this
recognition but the authorities have stopped short of
acknowledging us as a third gender."
The move to give hijras the vote has been applauded by
human rights activists but has caused a headache for
Election Commission officials who create separate
lines for male and female voters at every polling
booth.
"You just cannot just class us into men and women by
looking at our faces, bodies and expressions," Shikder
said.
Election Commission spokesman S.M. Asaduzzaman said
officials were still trying to figure out exactly how
hijras would cast their votes on Monday.
"It's a difficult one for us. We have only two queues,
one for men and another for women," he said.
"We thought long and hard about it but eventually
decided that hijras must go to the line that we think
suits them best. The more feminine ones will be in the
ladies' line while the ones who seem more manly will
be in with the men."
Monday's election will end a two-year rule by an
army-backed government.
The current regime has pushed through electoral reform
during its tenure, including creating a photo
identification voter list which has eliminated some
12.7 million fake "ghost" voters.
Commentators say the election will be the fairest in
the notoriously corrupt, impoverished South Asian
nation. Around 200,000 observers, including 2,500 from
overseas, will be watching Monday's vote.
Among those who will also be voting for the first time
are more than 40,000 Urdu-speaking Muslims who
migrated to Bangladesh from the majority-Hindu Indian
state of Bihar after the subcontinent was partitioned
in 1947 but before Bangladesh -- then East Pakistan --
gained independence in 1971.
A Bangladesh court ruled in May that the Biharis, long
considered refugees but never welcomed by either India
or Pakistan, were full-fledged citizens.
Tens of thousands of floating gypsies and more than
50,000 prisoners have also been given voting rights
for the first time in this election.

Bangladeshis vote for 1st time in 7 years
By JULHAS ALAM – 20 minutes ago
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Former Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina's political alliance took the lead early
Tuesday in elections aimed at restoring democracy to
the troubled South Asian nation, officials and media
reports said.
The English-language Daily Star newspaper reported
early Tuesday that the alliance led by Hasina's
Bangladesh Awami League party won 153 seats in the
300-seat parliament.
The main opponent led by Hasina's archrival Khaleda
Zia, also a former prime minister, has won 18 seats in
the parliament, the newspaper said.
Television stations ATN Bangla and Ekushey TV also
reported that Hasina's alliance was well ahead. The
media organizations say they obtain early results from
election officials at vote counting stations.
The Election Commission indicated that Hasina's party
and allies had taken a lead, but it didn't provide any
other details.
The two women have traded power before. Zia was
elected prime minister in 1991, Hasina in 1996, and
Zia again in 2001.
H.T. Imam, an aide to Hasina, welcomed the reports,
saying he expected the alliance would form the next
government.
"We are happy with the latest news we have in hand,"
Imam told the Associated Press. "It's the people's
victory."
Zia's party late Monday alleged there were
irregularities and forgery in the voting processes but
would not comment on the initial results.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, a close aide to Zia, said at
a news briefing that Zia would formally react to the
outcome of the results later Tuesday when a final
result is expected.
Tens of millions of voters cast their votes Monday as
the country held the first election in seven years
after two years of emergency rule.
Security was tight and voting was the most peaceful in
decades — a stark contrast to the failed elections of
2007, which dissolved into street riots and prompted a
military-backed interim government to take over.
Voter turnout was high, with about 70 percent of the
81 million eligible voters casting ballots, said
election official Humayun Kabir.
"I'm here to choose the right person to lead our
country," said S.A. Quader, a 57-year-old businessman
who voted in Dhaka. "I'm confident the election will
be free and fair."
But with no fresh faces in the contest, many fear the
vote will just mean a return to the corruption,
mismanagement and paralyzing protests of previous
attempts at democracy.
Both of the leading candidates, Zia and Hasina, face
corruption charges. The two, both heirs to Bangladeshi
political dynasties, have traded power back and forth
for 15 years in successive governments.
"Apparently parliamentary democracy is on the march
again," said Mizanur Rahman Shelley, a political
analyst and head of Center for Development Research of
Bangladesh. "But doubt remains whether it solves the
old problems."
Both leading parties campaigned on similar platforms
of reducing corruption and controlling inflation. One
of the few policy differences is that Hasina's party
is seen as relatively secular and liberal, while Zia
has allies among Islamic fundamentalists.
During the back and forth between Zia and Hasina, a
well-worn pattern emerged: One party wins the
election, and the other spends the term leading
strikes and protests to make impoverished nation of
150 million ungovernable.
More than 650,000 police officers and soldiers had
been deployed across the country in a bid to prevent
voter fraud and the violence that marred the last
attempt at a national vote.
To prevent cheating this time around, the interim
government compiled a new electoral roll including
voters' photographs. Some 200,000 election observers,
including more than 2,000 foreign ones, monitored
voting nationwide.
Last year, both Zia and Hasina were jailed on
corruption charges, which they dismissed as
politically motivated. They were freed on bail and
reassumed positions as the heads of their respective
parties, the two largest in the country.

[ALOCHONA] According to the Islamic Shariah, Vote to AL is Haram!!!

Before 1970 Election, JmaaTay Islami had issued the same 'FaTwah'. It had declared, ... "Voting for PPP, Awami League, Bhashani League and National Awami Party (pro AL Socialist party of Pathans in West Pakistan) was 'Hraam' according to Islamic Shriyah".

--- On Sat, 12/27/08, Cyrus <thoughtocrat@yahoo.com> wrote:
I will tolerate excruciating pain of having my teeth pulled without anesthesia, but I have no tolerance for stupidity. Suddenly, as if this is the crazy season, there has been an influx of idiots, radicals, and people with no knowledge or regard for our history, who have suddenly desended upon our national psyche like locusts. Mr. Khan's posting, notwithstanding the stupidest header I have had the displeasure of reading this week, just made me realize that the crazy season is on, and once again, stupidity has taken over sensibility.

First of all, the phrase "Islamic Shariah" is redundant, since Islam is the only religion that claims to have a "Shariah" (rather, the so-called Islamic scholars translate the Islamic Shariah). Secondly, as usual, a bunch of lunatics have taken it upon themselves to declare what is halal and haram and doing god's work. No one is capable of doing god's work. Even Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) declined to interpret god's intentions, and these religious nut-jobs believe that they know what is haram and halal. But that's not the point of this posting....

"The basic activities and life style of BNP & AL is almost similar"? Have you been asleep or brain-dead for the last 40 years? Both parties take interest, bribe, wine, women, etc., and Jamaat takes life in the name of religion, and is full of self-loathing, sociopathic, blood-thirsty, psychotic, war criminal, bastards! I would rather take interest, bribe, wine and women before taking someones life and turning into a Jamaat Zombie! I am sure the all forgiving, omnipotent, all-knowing, all-mighty would understand my choice. Now that I have put it out of the way...let's talk about more serious issues...

You quote the "Fundamental Principles" of our constitution, which in 1972 included four basic principles, secularism, nationalism, democracy, and socialism. Zia amended the constitution and changed secularism into "absolute trust and faith in almighty Allah", in order to form an alliance with the Jamaat and its minions. It was Zia who "Islamized" and perverted a neutral document such as our constitution, and since then, none of the elected officials from JP, BNP, and AL had the guts to challenge the stupidity that was etched into our most sacred national document. It was Zia and Ershad, who with the blessing from their Saudi fathers, declared Bangladesh to be an "Islamic State", joined the OIC, and received millions in Saudi petro dollars in aid, most of which ended up in the pockets of JP and BNP politicians. Some current AL politicians also took part in it, and now they are all "reformists" .

So, as our constitution stands right now, a Bangladeshi, who doesn't pray to Allah would be in violation of our constitution. A Bangladeshi Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Atheist, or any non-Muslim who doesn't pray to Allah would be defiant of the "fundamental principles". So, what's wrong with bringing the constitution back to its original state, where secularism is guaranteed, and not everyone has to declare absolute faith in Allah? What gives anyone the right to Islamize a nation?

You know what is haram? Disenfranchising millions of people, denying basic human rights, nationalizing your own faith to establish superiority, creating social and religious class system, and most importantly, politicizing the sacred ways of Islam for your own perverted propaganda.  If that's not Haram, I don't know what is.

Whether you vote for AL or BNP or a blindfolded monkey is your business. Stop with the haram nonsense, and let people exercise their rights. But first of all, do yourself a favor and take off that "Human Rights" and "Peace Worker" labels. Lately, way too many people with that kind of meaningless label have been spreading their puritanical nonsense. They neither respect human rights, nor do they spread the word of peace. No matter how much you sugarcoat fascism and fascist ideas, they are still perverse and have no place in our comatose democracy!

Cheers,

Subject: [ALOCHONA] According to the Islamic Shariah, Vote to AL is Haram!!!

Dear friends,

We all know that the basic activities and life style of BNP & AL is almost similar. As for example both the parties take interest, bribe, wine, women etc without any hesitation.

The only deference lies in the fundamental principles of BNP & AL. BNP wants to keep the fundamental principles of Bangladesh like the same as in our constitution which is included by our great leader Shahid President Ziaur Rahman. On the other hand, AL wants to change these principles like the same as 1972 which is included by our great leader Bangobandhu Sheikh Muzibar Rahman. AL believes in secularism which means that religion and state principles must be separated.

AL wants to remove the clause 1(A) by secularism. In this context is it not haram to vote AL as long as they don't accept the principles as like as our constitution? Mentionable that AL already has accepted "Bismillah" and "Allah is Almighty" as their slogan.

FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF Bangladesh

8. Fundamental principles.- (1) The principles of absolute trust and faith in the Almighty Allah, nationalism, democracy and socialism meaning economic and social justice, together with the principles derived from them as set out in this Part, shall constitute the fundamental principles of state policy.

(1A) Absolute trust and faith in the Almighty Allah shall be the basis of all actions.

(2) The principles set out in this Part shall be fundamental to the governance of Bangladesh, shall be applied by the State in the making of laws, shall be a guide to the interpretation of the Constitution and of the other laws of Bangladesh, and shall form the basis of the work of the State and of its citizens, but shall not be judicially enforceable.

Fundamental principles of Bangladesh Awami League

The fundamental principles of the Bangladesh Awami Leagues shall be Bengali Nationalism, Democracy, Secularism or in other words ensuring freedom of all religions as well as non-communal politics and Socialism, that is to say-the establishment of an exploitation- free society and social Justice.

RE: [ALOCHONA] RE: reputation of muslims?

Dear Readers,

Yes ofcourse all the terrorists are Muslims. Why? Cuz the media which is duped by the Western lords to successfully brand the Muslims as Terrorists. Terrorism has become synonymous with Islam. Why? Cuz of our failure. No one calls Mr. Bush a terrorist when he being an Evangelican Christian - he bombed Iraq without any justification. No one calls USA an axis of evil when it bombed Hirsosheema. No one calls Israeli PM as the most evil terrorist when he ordered hundreds to be killed in the name of defending Israel - a massive disproportionate use of force. No one calls the Christians in Nigeria - the Christian terrorists when the kill Muslims. No one calls Mr. Desmond Tutu as religious politican when he calls for Mugabe to be ousted by force. No one calls Latin American ppl to be Christian terrorists when the burn the movie theatre's screen when the Last Temptation of Christ is screened. No one calls Sikhs religious fanatics when they throw bombs in Delhi. No one calls Tamils as Hindu fanatics when they want freedom from Sri Lanka. Then why Mindanao is the base of Muslim terrorism?

Simple answer! Only Muslims have universal brotherhood sentiment. To break it with abuse - is the latest weapon with the help of atheists in the camouflage of various peace loving faiths. Why no one accepts - if any one who commits atrocity against humanity is in fact against his own faith - be he Muslim or Christian or Hindu? Cuz this is the handy work of the axis of evil. The people who do do not believe that there is a life hereafter where we have to give accounts for our morality, the people who constantly use abuses and filthy languages and sperad hatred against all religions and constantly try to create animosity amongst all religions - are the atheists - beyond doubt. We have allowed the atheist fanatics and hate mongers to steal the name of Secularism and modernity owing to our own failure in understanding our faiths. We do not know Quran or Hadith and we get easily swayed and concede defeat when the atheists throw out of context verses from their poorly informed trainers. We have allowed the abusers to believe that it is our faith that teaches and preaches evil. We have allowed ppl to grow more curious about atheist scholars by banning their books intead of asking Islamic scholars to take up the challenge in debates openly about those allegations. We have learnt not to read other scriptures and not to read Satanic Verses and not to question our faith logically. Why? Because in fact our knowledge is too poor to answer apparent difficult questions which the abusers have started using as weapons. We forget that Islam is the only religion that calls for dialogues in its scriptures and Islam has no weaknesses. Islam is the faith of the Muttaki. Idiots needs to get out of this faith. Islam was headed by our Prophet (pbuh) by a dedicated, unhindered and confident few who always gave a warning before allowing new comers in their circle of love and peace - U ENTER Islam after knowing about it completely and comprehensively - and If u enter Islam to ridicule it - WE will inflict the harshest PUNISHMENT. We should sort out our own followers who preach anti-Islamic sentiments in the name of our faith.

It is our fault and none other's! We have allowed this evil to work within us to abuse the name of Islam and uphold themselves as Muslims. Allah will surely filter the followers of true Islam Inshallah.

Sir, Why are All Terrorists Muslims?

E-mail Print PDF
by Firoz Bakht Ahmed

"Sir, why is it that all terrorists are Muslims?" Prajvi Bagga Malhotra, a Class 11 student of Modern School, asked me this question during a discussion about current events. This was a very timely, bold but sensible question and being a Muslim, I was accountable to address the curiosity in the minds of a class of 52 students.

Prajvi isn't the only one to have alluded to the Western media coined statement that all terrorists are Muslims but all Muslims are not terrorists. With so many voices stating that the religion advocates violence, Islam is today under the scanner. Not all of them can be wrong - people judge by what they see and today these terrorists speak and act violently in the name of Islam.

I told Prajvi that the guiding themes of every religion are the same. Islam too has the same theme and ideology as other religions but a few people misled some of its followers in the name of god.

26/11 (Mumbai), Kafeel in Glasgow, Mumbai blasts by the Memons and others in India, the jehadis in Kashmir, 9/11, 7/7 (London), 13/12 (Delhi), 29/10 (Delhi) and the Al Qaeda at a global level - all these make my head go down in shame.

It's so embarrassing that each time a Muslim name is found attached with the inhuman and insane acts of terrorism.

Note that jehad is the most misunderstood and misconstrued concept by our non-Muslim brethren and even Muslims. The true concept of jehad in Islam is not to be against other communities, groups or religions but to be against one's own selfish nature, vices and shortcomings within Muslim society in order to fight evil, injustice, inequity, illiteracy and ignorance. First an individual fights jehad against himself to get cleansed. After that he continues the efforts with his wife, family, locality and the whole community. This is Jehad-e-Akbar, the right meaning of jehad.

Terrorism is a political process and religion or a religious community has nothing to do with it. Neither does any religion teach to kill innocents (that is what the terrorists do) nor are the terrorists the people chosen by that religious community to undertake such ghastly acts on their behalf.

Nevertheless, an average Muslim's fears are hate crimes, difficulty in finding jobs, admissions and residential accommodation, unwanted repercussions, distrust and other such things that always get exacerbated by such incidents. Muslims also fear a backlash like the 1984 Sikh riots against them. Terrorists should not be helped in creating a rift between communities.

The Mumbai attackers did try to create a cleavage between Hindus and Muslims. However, though a tragic incident, it did have a silver lining in that it cut across religious lines and saw people uniting in their horror and outrage.

But leaders of some parties have even begun to think that any criticism of Pakistan would not be relished by this country's Muslims.

I still remember that during the last general elections in India, to appease Muslims the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) boasted of the Lahore bus and improving relations with Pakistan as one of its major achievements. It's so sad that these people still treat Indian Muslims as Pakistan's stooges.

Though all Indians know that a few terrorists do not tarnish a whole community, the government for fear of losing votes will not take the matter up with the Pakistani government seriously and will just resort to rhetoric.

It is quite clear now that Indian politicians of all shades were somehow living under an illusion that if they were to turn harsh against acts of terror, they would alienate the Muslims of this country.

When will they ever realize that by doing so they are clearly reflecting their perverted psyche of labeling all Indian Muslims as pro-Pakistanis, which is the worst abuse for any Indian Muslim.

Going soft on terror will not make Muslims happy as the perpetrators of such acts do not segregate their targets by religion. If the politicians of this country think that by shying away from taking on terrorists directly and by going soft on terror they will get kudos from Muslims, they are sadly mistaken.

The public in general has now had enough of those who exploit religious sentiment in order to gain electoral and political mileage. The recent poll results in Delhi are an indication of that.

The rider is: let us save Islam from "the Muslims", Hinduism from "the Hindus", Christianity from "the Christians", Judaism from "the Jews" and Sikhism from "the Sikhs" and other zealots as religion is a very personal matter and as humans, we are all same.

Subject: [ALOCHONA] change

We've been talking about the same problems for years. Nothing has ever been done to solve these problems.

For the past few years, we've been facing economic difficulties, price hikes, corruptions, poverty, unemployment and load shedding. It's hard now to pay for our food and medical, which are our basic needs. Education is a business now. Unemployment, poverty and load shedding are part of our everyday life.

We need a change from this never-ending situation. A Real Change! That is why everybody is looking closely at the upcoming parliamentary election. For this is not an ordinary time, neither it is an ordinary election.

We have heard a great deal about change. Change to what? To me, change is fixing economic difficulties, price hikes, corruptions, unemployment, load-shedding and poverty reduction. Change is to fix our medical facilities and educational system, instead of just talking about it. Change is to bring everybody together: Awami League (AL), BNP and Jatiyo Party. This time 'change' has to be more than just a slogan.

Let me introduce Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh. He is educated in Law and is a practicing Barrister at the Supreme CourtB SINCE 1999. He is fighting for a change and working to rebuild Dhanmondi-Hajaribug h-New Market area which is torn apart by conventional politics.

For a long time Barrister Sheikh Taposh has walked all over these areas. He has met all walks of people; ordinary people like you and I, who are looking for a real and lasting 'change' which will make a difference in our lives.

Barrister Sheikh Taposh recognizes the importance of moving forward to a politics of change. It is absolutely inspiring to see some one like Barrister Sheikh Taposh to come to politics, to take responsibility, to make people's life better.

In our constituency, Barrister Sheikh Taposh will work with us together to solve the problems that affect the lives of everyday people.

Let me now introduce myself. I am Samina Sharmin, a 26yrs old residence of Dhanmondi. My family has an all-BNP background. I am also a big time BNP supporter. But not this time, this time I am voting for Barrister Sheikh Taposh for a "change" and a meaning to my vote.

The Voters of Dhaka-12 constituency: The Time for Change Has Come.

Barrister Sheikh Taposh understands people through his family affiliation with politics for three generation. Nobody is perfect. But I can tell you, Barrister Sheikh Taposh will listen to you. He will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. And most importantly, he will open the door of his office and ask you to join with him to work together for the betterment of this constituency.

We have few weeks left for the election. If you knock on some doors for Barrister Sheikh Taposh, if you talk with people in the streets, and buses for Barrister Sheikh Taposh, if you make some phone calls and sms for him, if you stand with him and cast your ballot for him, then I can assure you we will win more than just Dhaka-12.

A philosopher once remarked, "one voice can change a home." I would say, if one voice can change a home, then it can change a constituency. If it can change a constitutuency, then it can change an entire nation, our Bangladesh . Your vote can change Bangladesh .

Thanking You.

Samina Sharmin
