[ALOCHONA] Verdict against graft, war crimes, militancy

Verdict against graft, war crimes, militancy

Biswadip Das

Dhaka, Dec 31 (bdnews24.com) – Voters lifted Awami League and its allies to unprecedented gains on a groundswell of feeling against patronage, corruption, war crimes and militancy in Monday's election.

The peaceful polling, with record turnout gave Sheikh Hasina's Awami League a stunning haul of 230 seats, a big enough majority in parliament to overcome procedural hurdles and pass legislation, and even tweak the country's constitution.

Observers are waiting to see how the party, which campaigned with the mantra of 'Change' to cut across social classes, will go about its business of governing the country that has runaway prices weighing on people, with most analysts saying the Hasina administration should attach priority to economy in the wake of the global recession.

Price hikes that began with the past BNP-led government from 2001-2006 and AL's hammering on graft—the reputation of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's sons and cabinet colleagues for using political perches to benefit themselves and their friends—were major reasons for the four-party's downfall in this election.

That women and religious minorities could cast their ballots without fear may also have been reason for the catastrophic losses suffered by BNP's ally Jamaat-e-Islami in particular, the party gaining only two seats in the next parliament.

Anti-war criminal sentiment that built up over the past two years also played havoc on the four-party alliance's polls prospects.

"Relentless campaigning against war criminals is the reason for the downfall of Jamaat," says Dhaka University history professor Syed Anwar Hossain.

Both BNP and Jamaat leaders have also been accused of aiding and abetting the Islamist militants who carried out attacks on Hasina and British envoy Anwar Choudhury, in a bid to shut their rivals out.

Their deeds over those five years likely prompted first-time voters, all post-independence generation, to reject hardline politics.

New voters, estimated at 30 percent of some 8 crore enrolled, were also drawn to young and new faces among AL candidates.

"People suffered during the four-party government and the issues of price hike, militancy and lack of good governance resulted in their losses," Hossain told bdnews24.com.

"People used the first tenure of the AL regime as a comparison yardstick, and the first four years of the first Awami League tenure were marked by success stories," he added.

"BNP's organisational weakness, image crisis due to the anticorruption crackdown contributed to its failure in securing a solid ground," Hossain observed.

"Bangladesh is a tilting nation, this time it has tilted towards AL."

"Hopefully, AL will establish a cautious, controlled and future oriented government."

Khaleda, Hasina's fiercest foe, after an emergency meeting with her policymakers the day after BNP's unprecedented polls debacle, stopped short of "rejecting" the election results but said the Election Commission's "staged results" were unacceptable.

There was concern that the BNP and its allies, which governed for five turbulent years until they stepped aside in October 2006 for a caretaker government, might contest the loss by calling mobs into the streets.

They cried foul play as the voting closed, alleging irregularities and slow voting.

But few of Khaleda's followers seemed to believe that the Election Commission, praised by international observers for its impartiality, would overturn the results on the basis of their spotty allegations of abuses.

The victory of the AL, and its allies, including former president HM Ershad's Jatiya Party, which polled 27 seats, appears increasingly likely to be accepted without a recurrence of the turmoil and violence that have often marred past elections in bangladesh.

[mukto-mona] Fw: 2008 Election Result: Lot Of Surprises

2008 Election Result: Lot Of Surprises

The long –awaited 2008 election has been held , generally speaking, peacefully. The Awami League alliance has won comfortably. The BNP alliance has  not done well. They got only about ten percent seats. People may rush to conclusion that this has happened because of this or that reason. In fact it may be for a combination of trasons. These may include corruption of some peole , weakness of the party in the field level due to heavy handed action of some organisations, relentless partisan propaganda by a large part of press and electronic media ,failure in part to understand the mood of the new voters, selecting  so many badly reputed candicdates  and so on.In fact these are guesses. There may be many other reasons.

We urge all to accept the result because some irregularities in  some  centers can not make this result. The best course would be for BNP and Jamaate Islami to build –up their organisations and prepare for the future. In the meantime they should work as a responsible opposition in the Parliament.

Some people have tried to suggest that some leaders have lost election because of their role in 1971.This argument has no basis .The same candidates won before in election , this can not be a primary factor. On the other hand major freedom fighters of 71 struggle also lost such as Barrister Maudud Ahmad, the principal actor in London for Bangladesh movement, Sadek Hossain Khoka and sector Commander Mr Hamidullah.

We wish that no violence takes place now, we wish good luck for the coming government led by Sheikh Hasina.

[mukto-mona] Fw: Kashmir Election : How Far It Rehlects Their Opinion--Asia Post, Dhaka editorial dated 30.12.08

Kashmir Election : How Far It Rehlects Their Opinion

The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir yesterday appeared set for a second successive spell of coalition as elections to the state legislature threw up a fractured mandate, according to news report.None of the major contenders for power -- National Conference (NC), People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress -- could win enough seats to form the state government on their own.National Conference led by former chief minister Farooq Abdullah emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats in the 87-member assembly, far away from the majority mark of 44 seats.PDP headed by Mufti Mohd Sayeed finished second, setting off speculation in political circles about possible permutations and combinations about the shape of future government. The questions being asked is whether NC will form a coalition government with Congress or PDP or will the Farooq Abdullah-led party will form government on its own with outside support from Congress or PDP?The election may have seen Congress' tally of seats in polls this time coming down from its haul in the previous elections when it secured 20 seats but the party is clearly in the position of a kingmaker as its support has been sought by NC. NC leader Omar Abdullah, Farooq's son, has said his party would approach Congress for support. He did not rule out alliance with PDP but described the latter as an "opportunist party".

The Congress and PDP had shared power in the state for the last six years after the 2002 polls had thrown up a hung assembly under a unique power-sharing arrangement which saw the two parties leading the coalition government for three years each.

But how far this election reflects the public opinion. We have seen the massive movement of the Kashmiris and first hand report of  Ms Arundhati Roy. It appeared to us that hardly any Kashmiri wants to stay with India. The solution of kashmir problem is a must for peace in the subcontinent. India should realise it. They have genuine  complaint about Mumbai but they should also realise that the Indian army and other forces have killed more than sixty thousand civiliansin Kashmir and they have grudge against India. We hope India realizes that this can not continue forever.

[mukto-mona] Letter for kind consideration

SUPERB STATESMANSHIP
On December 30, 2008 we have noticed unparallel and superb
statesmanship from one of our great leaders, Begum Khaleda Zia. On
this day she thanked the Election Commissioner for arranging the
"fraudulent election" (in her language) in which her party faced
damned defeat. This year, in USA the defeated President candidate was
one of the first few persons to congratulate the winner. In Bangladesh
the defeated candidate who, by nature could have been angry with the
CE showed the outstanding greatness by thanking the man considered as
"root cause". Such a gesture of our leader shall remain in the memory
of the people for all time to come, even though it may be difficult
for the common people to fathom her greatness. I believe what is
natural for a lady with such a greatness to do after the summoning of
the parliament in 2009 are the following : (01) To take the first
chance to formulate a bill authorizing the relevant authorities to
bring back the money sent by her sons abroad, (02) To take appropriate
steps such that the corrupt members of her party serve the jail terms
which have already been served to them and (03) To cooperate the
treasury members in all their programs for the welfare of this country
and the people.
Thanks,
Prof. Bijon B. Sarma. Khulna University.

[ALOCHONA] Why the AL won and the BNP lost the election-2008

Why the AL won and the BNP lost the election-2008

Mahmud ur Rahman Choudhury

God forbid that I be considered pro or anti anyone. I have to start on this apologetic tone because things are so polarized in Bangladesh that people tend to see everything in black and white ignoring the shades in between and the other 5 bright colors of the rainbow but for my own sake and for the sake of my readers, I cannot remain blinkered and have to see things in Panasonic colors. This analysis of the crucial 2008 election is meant to throw up certain issues which both the political parties and the public need to be aware of, if our progress towards democracy is to remain unfettered and unhindered.

Why the AL won and what it ought to do with its victory.
The AL's win alone, minus its alliance, can only be compared with the 1970 elections which also gave a colossal victory to AL on a mandate which led to the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 - that was not a change; it was as complete a paradigm shift as is possible in a real world. In all probability the electorate voted so massively for the AL with intents of bringing about another paradigm shift.

The reasons as to why the AL won so overwhelmingly can be summarized as follows:

(1) The leadership remained united behind Sheikh Hasina inspite of many differences of opinion within it. (2) The united leadership could not only keep the organization intact but could also motivate it to withstand the disruptive effects of 2 years of military backed emergency regime. (3) The AL's positive, constructive, measured and intelligent engagement with both the Emergency Government and the EC allowed it to influence many key decisions regarding the process of elections which went to its absolute advantage. (4) The skillful propagandistic use of the backlash from the 5 years of BNP-Jamaat miss-governance, corruption and support of militancy weaned most of the women, the uncommitted and new young voters away from BNP. (5) The successful Sector Commanders Forum's stand against the war criminals severely handicapped the Jamaat, the major alliance partner of the BNP. (6) The skilful use of the urge for change in the populace went in favour of the AL because it could reflect those urges in its election manifesto and could effectively and convincingly propagate it among the electorate.

The AL has now 5 years to fulfill its major promises of: (1) Controlling inflation. (2) Revitalizing agriculture and industry. (3) Ensuring basic right of food, shelter, clothing, education and health (4) providing more opportunities for employment both in urban and rural areas. (5) Drastically reducing poverty. (6) Ensuring food and energy security. (7) Tackling militancy and terrorism. (8) Ensuring good governance through reduction of corruption, through changes in political culture, through transparency and accountability of public administration, through allowing the judiciary to function effectively and independently, through making the parliament affective and through implementation of local government. (9) Ensuring social, economic and political equity and justice. (10) Bringing war criminals to justice.

Why the BNP lost and what it ought to do with its defeat.
The reasons as to why the BNP lost so miserably can be summarized as follows: (1) Its divisive leadership severely disrupted its entire organizational integrity, drastically reducing the party's ability to withstand the damaging effects of the Emergency regime. (2) The leadership was unable to accurately judge the changes taking place in the Country and adjust the party's principles, organization and key personnel to reflect those changes. (3) The BNP's stubborn refusal to engage with the Emergency Government and the EC denied it any opportunity to influence the changes in the electoral process to its advantage. (4) Its refusal to jettison the Jamaat as an alliance partner was perceived by the electorate as supporting militancy and terrorism and protecting war criminals. (5) Its stubbornness in owing up to its miss-governance and corruption during its tenure in government was perceived by the electorate as an inability to bring about desired and needed changes. (6) Its lack-luster election campaign with repeated emphasis on non-existent conspiracies diverted it from its real task of propagating its election manifesto.

What the BNP needs to do with its defeat is to: (1) Take a deep, intelligent and realistic look at its principles, organization and leadership and bring about revolutionary changes in them. (2) Revitalize its demoralized grass-root level organization and mount a careful and well thought-out strategy to recruit new members and supporters. (3) Continuously, vigorously and visibly engage in Parliament and play a responsible opposition role although its role would be severely circumscribed by it negligible parliamentary memberships.

What the AL and BNP ought not to do
(1) Engage in propagandist and polemical recriminations against each other.
(2) Forget their commitments and promises to the Nation.
(3) Engage in corruption and politicization of State institutions.
(4) Engage in confrontational and destructive politics.
(5) Attempt to forcefully redefine "National Identity".
(6) Attempt to monopolize political, social and economic power.

Concluding Remarks
Defeat and victory are relative terms denoting temporary state of affairs but the war is about establishing democracy. This election has been a victory for the whole Nation, a victory "for the people, by the people and of the people"; a victory for democracy, for the political parties and for everyone, marking an important landmark battle but much of the greater war for establishing democracy remains ahead. The AL and the BNP will now have to get the Nation together to fight and to win that greater war - therein will lay the ultimate decision of defeat and victory and not in this one single election.

It is also interesting to note that Mr. M.B.I. Munshi a long-time pro-Pakistani

A highly placed sourced in Bangladesh Awami League on condition of anonymity told Weekly Blitz that, Sheikh Hasina is confident of winning the Monday election with at least 168 seats, while she has finalized most of the names of her 45-member cabinet. She has also instructed some of her personal staffs to start working for the oath

RE: [mukto-mona] Congratulation to people of Bangladesh and Awami League

Dear Sefat:

You are absolutely right. One thing we should keep in mind that now political trend has been changed, people are not blind and biased. If Awamileague does well, people will vote them again. If not, people will not vote for Awamileague. Very simple calculation. People voted awamileague with lot of hopes and aspiration so Awamileague should be very very serious about their commitment. They should respect the opposition party, involve them in decision making and activate the parliament.

Congratulation, peoples verdict is pronounced, loud and clear. People's determination was mighty in favor of change. Change, which will make their dream come true. Bangladesh Awami League must take this challenge of change with maximum passion, sincerity, genuineness, honesty and extreme seriousness and most importantly with great humbleness.

More often than not, party that looses election does the sole search to find the root cause of their failure. However, this time the winner has to do the sole search to have a comprehensive realization with an unprecedented landslide victory in their hand. I earnestly hope Bangladesh Awami League will truly grasp the very reason of their unparallel extraordinary victory and work toward to achieve the towering goal people have set for them.

The comparison of election result of 1991, 1996 and 2001 beyond doubt not applicable to this year 2008 election. Avalanche election result of 29 December of 2008 is more of what the nation has observed once before with unparalleled peoples verdict of 1970 election. Similar to 1970, this year election, it was more of a referendum then ordinary election that has meager win or loose.

Peoples decree of 1970 general election held on December 7 of 1970 and provincial assemble election which took place on 17 December of 1970 was unmistakable unambiguous. Result was overwhelmingly unequivocally of ending the oppression and tyranny of Pakistani junta. People's aspiration for their autonomy and liberty reflected through the victory of Bangabandhu and Bangladesh Awami League, Nouka (Boat) become the symbol of their freedom. Jingle of liberation become the mantra of peoples verdict. Referendum (Election) of 1970 gave us a country, a flag, an anthem to sing and a constitution to follow, all of which tormented in the hands of anti liberation forces led by four party alliances. People gave another verdict on December 29 to bring the lost glory back, establish the vision of liberation, and to establish Bangabandhu's Shonar Bangla.

Once again, after 38 years later in another December Nouka (boat) and Bangladesh Awami League become the symbol of liberation. Liberation from oppressive Jamat-BNP four party alliances misrule. Resurrection of defeated anti liberation forces under direct supervision of BNP led alliance government. Unfortunately supporting terrorist fundamentalist groups who sell Islam the religion of peace for their skimpy political gain become Khaleda Zia's political asset. Oppression, injustice, unequal treatment, overwhelming corruption, absolute failure of running the government for the people become the norm of the day. Now people have spoken firmly once again and everyone must take note of that.

People's verdict was genuine reflection of their aspiration to run the country under Bangladesh Awami Leagues stewardship to free them. It is not just an ordinary victory but also a clear mandate to liberate them from poverty, corruption, nepotism, anti liberation forces, miscreants of muscle power, black marketers and wholesome misuse and misrule of power.

During every single election campaign meeting Sheikh Hasina encouraged people to give another mandate to Awami League similar to one they delivered in 1970. She said "we achieved our independence in this month of December, let us have another victory in this month of triumph", citizens answered confidently and they gave more then what she asked for, now it is Bangladesh Awami Leagues turn to upheld their dream and complete the unfinished call of –Dittio Biplob- of our great leader Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Being the daughter of Bangabandhu, the father of the nation you must do what he could have done but could not do because of his martyrdom. I do rest my complete faith upon you and hope Bangladesh Awami League will not fail to comply with people's aspiration. We will not ask you for anything but we will walk with you to make success of your program of "Din Bodoler Ishtahar".–This victory is not about Awami League or Mohajoth BUT this victory is all about people and only people and Bangladesh Awami League must remind them selves everyday every time they make a public decision.

Awami League must upheld and be vocal to establish human right (right to food, work, health, education and housing) trial of murderous war criminals, corruption free society, fiscal emancipation, institutionalizatio n of democracy, giving all out institutional support to farmers and establishing the right of fisherman to water (Jol Jar Jola Tar), truthful liberation of judicial system, freedom of speech and expression, especially press, right to information, emancipation and empowerment of women's right, enrolling young generation into your vision of 2021 of digital Bangladesh all of which can come true with little sacrifice, right planning and sincere implementation. Right planning and sincere implementation can be done only with honest competent brilliancy. Awami League must find its way to contain its victory and go forward with great self-humiliating humbleness.

Vigilance is the eternal price of liberty.  People of Bangladesh must remain alert and proactive. Every member of Bangladesh Awami League must remain watchful of his or her act. No mercy, no compassion and no clemency for disguised immoral people. Bangladesh has started its forward march and Bangladesh Awami League must take the lead. Bangladesh Awami League as a political party has to bring the changes in politics whether that is internal or external; Awami League has to set the exemplary democratic norms within and beyond its boundary.

People's confidence and faith upon Bangladesh Awami League and its leadership must not be forgotten. Having this mandate in their shoulder, Bangladesh Awami League must act with humility and gratitude, ask not what they can have but mull over what they can deliver for the people of Bangladesh and make prosperity of commoners their priority.

Congratulation to people of Bangladesh and the winning team of Bangladesh Awami League once again. My earnest pray to almighty -Tomar Potaka Jara Dao Tara Bohibara Dao Shokhti-

Yours truly,

Shamim Chowdhury

Only part of my suggestion were put in the Amendment of the Criminal Procedure Code

About 10 years ago, I suggested through Article to restrain to Police from arrest, to any one for any crime already committed, except crime by an enemy alien; or declared as terrorist or for likewise offender. He should be issued a Notice to appear before a Judicial Magistrate of his selection to record his statement of facts. He should be arrested only in case he not recorded his statement within the period mentioned in the notice for appearance before a Judicial Magistrate. If his statement would be proved as false the falsification of such statement should be liable for another punishment, which should be prevailed separately. Applications for anticipatory Bail or Bail to a person only granted if he already recorded his statement before a Judicial Magistrate. I have made my suggestions in detail explaining with the detailed reasons. My articles were published in all most all Hindi Newspapers in India and few English Newspapers. I complied my aforesaid suggestions in a Book : A MODEL CONSTITUTION FOR INDIA, which was registered in 2002 under the Copyright Act and posted at : http://constitutionindia.tripod.com

My suggestions are recorded under Suggested Article 12 as under:-

(1)    No person shall be convicted of any offence except for violation of law in force at the time of the commission of an offence, nor be subjected to a penalty greater than that, which might have been inflicted under the law in force at the time of the commission of the offence.

(2)                 No person shall be prosecuted and punished for the same offence more than once, except in respect of an offence to infringe the fundamental rights of other citizen.

(3)       Making a statement by a person named in any complaint is his fundamental duty, immediately after knowledge of complaint, in the manner subscribed by the Law in this respect.

(4)       No person shall be arrested, by investigating authority, in connection with any offence, if he records his true statement on oath, about his knowledge with reference to, or his involvement in such offence, within the period prescribed by law.

(5)                 The clause (3) shall not applicable in respect of any person who for time being is an enemy alien; or declared as terrorist or for likewise offender;

(6)                 No accused person shall entitle to get bail in any criminal matter, if his arrest is made under order of a Court, unless and until he complies his duty under clause (3).

(7)                 Any person subscribing or making a false statement by affirmation of an oath before any authority shall be liable to stringent punishment, not less than five years, which shall run separately, from any other punishment, if any.

(8)                 Any person not to comply, the conditions laid down by clause (3), shall be punished for not less than half of the highest punishment arises, against offences referred in the complaint, with reference to an offence, whether he committed or not, and such punishment shall run separately, without any mercy. Similarly for the absolutely false complaint lodged by any one with clear intention to injure the person named as accused in the complaint, the complainant shall suffer similar punishment.

Punishments for two separate offences shall not run together.

Now part of the aforesaid suggestions have becomes the law of the Land, after amending Criminal Procedure Code, by Rajyasabha on 18.1.2008 and on 26.12.2008, by Loksabha, subject to President gives her ascent. But, my suggestions were stronger impacts to put a check on the crimes, since under my suggestion this was mandatory if any crime have been committed ten criminal should have been admitted his role in the respective crime. No Bail would have been allowed him until he did not record such statement before a Judicial Magistrate of his selection. My suggestion also would have been put a strong check on Police not to record false reports under political influence or under gratification or otherwise, which will be continued under the amended law. My suggestions would have been also reduced the period of Criminal Justice System, which is not possible under the amended Cr. P. C.

[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh: Absolute power corrupts absolutely

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury

Bangladesh Awami League has already got 229 seats in the General
Election of December 29. It is expected that the number of seats may
increase few more. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nationalist Party [BNP] and
Jatiyo Party [JP] has bagged 29 seats each. With this result, it is
now a big question in the minds of people as to whether Jatiyo Party
would now emerge as the main oposition in the parliament, while
absolutely cornering Bangladesh Nationalist Party as the minority in
the parliament too. According to experts and analysts, people of
Bangladesh, this time not only voted against anti liberation forces
and Islamists but also voted against autocrats like Ershad. With this
electoral result, now Sheikh Hasina has got people's mandate of
forming the government without any support from millitary dictator
like Ershad or leftists like Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Huq Inu etc.
After 1973, Bangladesh Awami League has got massive victory in the
parliament election. In 1973, although people of Bangladesh voted for
Awami League with the aspiration of a Golden Bangladesh under the
leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, but, the government
ultimately and unfortunately turned into the most autocratic regime,
introducing black laws like Special Powers Act in 1974, banning all
newspapers and suffocating the voice of media, introducing one party
politics like BAKSAL and also establishing para-millitary force named
`Rakkhibahini' to destroy Bangladesh Army.

Many of the political analysts although are critical on formation of
BAKSAL, they feel that Bangabandhu's steps in minimizing the strength
of Bangladesh Armed forces was extremely appreciating and timely, as
in the past 32 years, people of Bangladesh in most of the times
witnessed interference of army in stopping democratic process in the
country. Most of the over ambitious Generals most of the times tried
to defame country's politics and democratic institutions. Even after
1/11 political changes in Bangladesh, Generals and the millitary
controlled interim government tried their best to put a very nasty
image on all the polticians in Bangladesh. But, their attempts now
visibly are foiled and people of Bangladesh voted in favor of the
oldest political party under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina
supporting her latest theme of `Vision 2021'. It is now expected by
many of the people in the country that Sheikh Hasina will truly emerge
as the cherismatic administrator who will not only lead the entire
nation towards peace and prosperity but will also ensure a very stable
Bangladesh in the region. Her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
played key role in placing Bangladesh in the prestigious position
amongst the South Asian neighbors.

Bangladeshi people are already frustrated with the exorbitant rise in
the price of essentials. Sheikh Hasina already reminded the people
that during her rule price of essentials were almost 4 times less than
what is prevailing now. It is a timely aspiration of the people of the
country that, within next 2-3 months, Awami League government will be
able to pull down the prices of essentials at least fifty per cent
less than what is existing now. They also want to see a real
initiatives from the government in ensuring housing, medical and other
essential facilities for the 150 million people in the country.
The next aspiration of the people of Bangladesh is to see trial of war
criminals under the rule of Sheikh Hasina. It was one of the top
agendas of Sheikh Hasina of trying the war criminals. It is expected
that the trial will begin much ahead of March 26 2009.

In 1996, when Bangladesh Awami League won the election, Sheikh Hasina
was more busy in getting `Doctorate' degree from various foreign
institutions as well as grabbing the ownership of `Ganabhaban'
[official residence of the Prime Minister] as well Awami League
hooligans like Shamim Osman, Joinal Hazari, Abul Hasnat Abdullah, Maya
Chowdhury, Dipu Chowdhury, Dr. Iqbal, Haji Mockbull, Haji Selim etc
established reign of terror in the country. Despite series of protests
by the people of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina ignored these facts and
continued to extend various forms of support towards such nasty elements.

On the other hand, a number of ministers in Awami League cabinet such
as Amir Hussain Amu, Tofael Ahmed, Sajeda Chowdhury, Mufazzal Hossain
Chowdhury Maya, Professor Abu Sayeed, Mohammed Nasim etc were busy in
almost free-styled corruption and nepostism. Civil administration was
totally polarized by the then rulling party.

It is now the expectation of the people of Bangladesh, that Sheikh
Hasina will not repeat the errors of the past. She truly will lead the
nation towards peace and prosperity as the proud daghter of the
founding father of the nation.

But, some of the analysts are rather skeptical on a real cherismatic
administration under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. They are fearing
that absolute power may corrupt the next government absolutely. Awami
League may even turn into the worst ever fascist and dictatorial
regime in the history of the country.

We as Bangladesh most influentail newspaper want to believe that,
Sheikh Hasina will use the massive mandate of the people in shaping
Bangladesh as the most prosperous nation in South Asia. She will also
do anything in combating rise of Islamist millitancy and radical
Islam. Hasina will surely adopt dynamic policies in extending hands of
cooperation towards the South Asian neighbors as well as international
communtiy. Decade old culture of hatred towards other religions like
Christianity and Judaism shall come to an end. Bangladesh will never
allow any anti-Ahmadia activites in the country. Above all, as part of
Sheikh Hasina's role in presenting the country as a true secular
nation and key-player in regional and internation peace, Bangladesh
will establish relations with Israel, without wasting any further time.

A bad beginning of the Prime Minister elect in Bangladesh

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury

Political parties are generally burdened with the ugly influence of
some hooligans and thugs. People of Bangladesh who voted for electing
a new government under the leadership of Bangladesh Awami League chief
Sheikh Hasina at least aspired that this time, this party will not
repeat its notorious misdeeds like 1973 or 1996. They were confident
that this time, Bangladesh Awami League, which got landslide victory
would at least change its facist character.
On Tuesday, the Prime Minister elect Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to
address the members of local and international press and fixed 4:00 pm
[Bangladesh Time] at the National Press Club VIP lounge for the event.
Most of the representatives of local and foreign press rushed to the
spot. They were asked to wait till Sheikh Hasina comes. Meanwhile,
bunch of Awami League activists started coming inside the press club
auditorium and captured most of the seats while the journalists were
even unable to get any place within the premise to cover the important
event. While the foreign journalists were almost sweating and waiting
to hear from the Prime Minister elect, they were suddenly told that
the premise has been changed to another auditorium at the Ground Floor
of the National Press Club. Then it was turn for the members of the
media to almost battle with the Awami League activists to rush to the
new place. But, finally when they went, proud leaders of Bangladesh
Awami League told them that the press conference was postponed till
further notice.

This drama has greatly annoyed many of the foreign journalists. They
commented that if the newly elected Prime Minister cannot even manage
her own party cadres and had to ultimately abandon the first ever
press conference, what type of rule she may exhibit to the people of
Bangladesh?
