[ALOCHONA] Hasina deserves noble prize in literature

Because she can make short story as she is making about her telephone conversation with BDR DG Sakil

Present relation of AL with india can be compared only with extra marital affairs. Will it bring any good to AL and Bangladesh or disaster as extramartial affairs always bring ?

[mukto-mona] Part 1: Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh: Evil Forces of Darkness

Part 1: Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh : Evil Forces of Darkness

Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh (often referred to as just 'Jamaat') is the largest and most influential Islamist political party in Bangladesh. Jamaat strongly collaborated with Pakistan army to prevent the independence of Bangladesh but after the victory of Bangladesh freedom fighters over Pakistan army , Jamaat-e-Islami accepted the independence of Bangladesh and started political activities again under a controversial authorization by late president Ziaur Rahman in 1978

British India (1941-1947)

The Jamaat-e-Islami was founded in pre-partition India by Syed Ab'ul Ala Maududi in 1941. Maulana Maududi moved to Pakistan from India after independence and the current party in Bangladesh originated out of the East Pakistan wing of the party. However, Jamaat had opposed the creation of a separate state for the Muslims of India. While persisting in his Anti-Pakistan Ideology Maududi writes in one of his books, *"If we have ever uttered a single word in the favor of creation of Pakistan , it must be proved with references." That is why Jamat-e-Islami also did not support the Muslim League, the largest Muslim party, in core election of 1946.

Pakistan Period (1948 - 1971)

After the creation of Pakistan, Jamaat-e-Islami was divided into separate Indian and Pakistani organisations. The Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh originates from Jamaat wing in the then East Pakistan. Jamaat strongly opposed for an independent Bangladesh. At liberation war of Bangladesh Jamaat not only aided Paksitan army by providing information or pro-independent Bangladeshis but also itself created many militia organization such as Razakar, Al badr, as shams in order to capture and eventually kill freedom fighters. Thus the party is regarded to Bangladeshis as quisling of Bangladesh.in 1971 its top leader were ex-chief, Golam Azam,Matiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mujahid,Muhammaad Kamaruzzaman, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi etc.[1][2]

One of Jamat's top leader, Mujahid's statement on "Daily Sangram" on October 15th ,1971

  • *"The youths of the Razakars and al-Badar forces and all other voluntary organizations have been working for the national to protect it from the collaborators and agents of India . But, recently it was observed that a section of political leaders like ZA Bhutto, Kawsar Niazi, Mufti Mahmud and Asgar Khan have been making objectionable remarks about the patriots.

Intellectual Killing

At december 14th,1971 when the pakistan army is about to surrender, Jamaat leaders with help of pakistan army killed most top intellectuals/scholars of Bangladesh probably in order to secure a opponentless position in an post-independent Bangladesh.December 14th today is known as Intellectual Killing Day in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Period (1978 - present)

For this stance, and Jamaat was banned after victory of Mukti Bahini and its all of tope leaders fled to West Pakistan. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman , first president of Bangladesh also cancelled the citizenship of Golam Azam, the leader of Jamaat. Later Golam Azam from pakistan moved to london and other leaders moved to middle-east countries. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in 1975 and in consequence army chief Major general Ziaur Rahman came to power who allowed Jamaat to start its political activities again in Bangladesh. Ziaur Rahman also allowed Golam Azam to return to Bangladesh from England . Golam Azam came back and retook the position as the leader of Jamaat.

After the end of military rule in 1990, protests began against Golam Azam and Jamaat under war criminal charges headed by Jahanara Imam, an author who also lost her two sons and husband in the liberation war. Golam azam's citizenship was challenged in supreme court as he was holding a pakistani passport. In the lack of appropriate law about war criminal , Bangladesh supreme court had to allow golam azam to have Bangladeshi passport and for same lack of law Jamaat was not disaallow from continuing its political activities. Jahanara Imama who was already suffering from cancer died after few years and since then no active protests against Jamaat about war criminal was seen.

[ALOCHONA] Why Socialism?

Why Socialism?
by Albert Einstein

This essay was originally published in the first issue of Monthly Review (May 1949).

Is it advisable for one who is not an expert on economic and social issues to express views on the subject of socialism? I believe for a number of reasons that it is.

Let us first consider the question from the point of view of scientific knowledge. It might appear that there are no essential methodological differences between astronomy and economics: scientists in both fields attempt to discover laws of general acceptability for a circumscribed group of phenomena in order to make the interconnection of these phenomena as clearly understandable as possible. But in reality such methodological differences do exist. The discovery of general laws in the field of economics is made difficult by the circumstance that observed economic phenomena are often affected by many factors which are very hard to evaluate separately. In addition, the experience which has accumulated since the beginning of the so-called civilized period of human history has—as is well known—been largely influenced and limited by causes which are by no means exclusively economic in nature. For example, most of the major states of history owed their existence to conquest. The conquering peoples established themselves, legally and economically, as the privileged class of the conquered country. They seized for themselves a monopoly of the land ownership and appointed a priesthood from among their own ranks. The priests, in control of education, made the class division of society into a permanent institution and created a system of values by which the people were thenceforth, to a large extent unconsciously, guided in their social behavior.

But historic tradition is, so to speak, of yesterday; nowhere have we really overcome what Thorstein Veblen called "the predatory phase" of human development. The observable economic facts belong to that phase and even such laws as we can derive from them are not applicable to other phases. Since the real purpose of socialism is precisely to overcome and advance beyond the predatory phase of human development, economic science in its present state can throw little light on the socialist society of the future.

Second, socialism is directed towards a social-ethical end. Science, however, cannot create ends and, even less, instill them in human beings; science, at most, can supply the means by which to attain certain ends. But the ends themselves are conceived by personalities with lofty ethical ideals and—if these ends are not stillborn, but vital and vigorous—are adopted and carried forward by those many human beings who, half unconsciously, determine the slow evolution of society.

For these reasons, we should be on our guard not to overestimate science and scientific methods when it is a question of human problems; and we should not assume that experts are the only ones who have a right to express themselves on questions affecting the organization of society.

Innumerable voices have been asserting for some time now that human society is passing through a crisis, that its stability has been gravely shattered. It is characteristic of such a situation that individuals feel indifferent or even hostile toward the group, small or large, to which they belong. In order to illustrate my meaning, let me record here a personal experience. I recently discussed with an intelligent and well-disposed man the threat of another war, which in my opinion would seriously endanger the existence of mankind, and I remarked that only a supra-national organization would offer protection from that danger. Thereupon my visitor, very calmly and coolly, said to me: "Why are you so deeply opposed to the disappearance of the human race?"

I am sure that as little as a century ago no one would have so lightly made a statement of this kind. It is the statement of a man who has striven in vain to attain an equilibrium within himself and has more or less lost hope of succeeding. It is the expression of a painful solitude and isolation from which so many people are suffering in these days. What is the cause? Is there a way out?

It is easy to raise such questions, but difficult to answer them with any degree of assurance. I must try, however, as best I can, although I am very conscious of the fact that our feelings and strivings are often contradictory and obscure and that they cannot be expressed in easy and simple formulas.

Man is, at one and the same time, a solitary being and a social being. As a solitary being, he attempts to protect his own existence and that of those who are closest to him, to satisfy his personal desires, and to develop his innate abilities. As a social being, he seeks to gain the recognition and affection of his fellow human beings, to share in their pleasures, to comfort them in their sorrows, and to improve their conditions of life. Only the existence of these varied, frequently conflicting, strivings accounts for the special character of a man, and their specific combination determines the extent to which an individual can achieve an inner equilibrium and can contribute to the well-being of society. It is quite possible that the relative strength of these two drives is, in the main, fixed by inheritance. But the personality that finally emerges is largely formed by the environment in which a man happens to find himself during his development, by the structure of the society in which he grows up, by the tradition of that society, and by its appraisal of particular types of behavior. The abstract concept "society" means to the individual human being the sum total of his direct and indirect relations to his contemporaries and to all the people of earlier generations. The individual is able to think, feel, strive, and work by himself; but he depends so much upon society—in his physical, intellectual, and emotional existence—that it is impossible to think of him, or to understand him, outside the framework of society. It is "society" which provides man with food, clothing, a home, the tools of work, language, the forms of thought, and most of the content of thought; his life is made possible through the labor and the accomplishments of the many millions past and present who are all hidden behind the small word "society."

It is evident, therefore, that the dependence of the individual upon society is a fact of nature which cannot be abolished—just as in the case of ants and bees. However, while the whole life process of ants and bees is fixed down to the smallest detail by rigid, hereditary instincts, the social pattern and interrelationships of human beings are very variable and susceptible to change. Memory, the capacity to make new combinations, the gift of oral communication have made possible developments among human being which are not dictated by biological necessities. Such developments manifest themselves in traditions, institutions, and organizations; in literature; in scientific and engineering accomplishments; in works of art. This explains how it happens that, in a certain sense, man can influence his life through his own conduct, and that in this process conscious thinking and wanting can play a part.

Man acquires at birth, through heredity, a biological constitution which we must consider fixed and unalterable, including the natural urges which are characteristic of the human species. In addition, during his lifetime, he acquires a cultural constitution which he adopts from society through communication and through many other types of influences. It is this cultural constitution which, with the passage of time, is subject to change and which determines to a very large extent the relationship between the individual and society. Modern anthropology has taught us, through comparative investigation of so-called primitive cultures, that the social behavior of human beings may differ greatly, depending upon prevailing cultural patterns and the types of organization which predominate in society. It is on this that those who are striving to improve the lot of man may ground their hopes: human beings are not condemned, because of their biological constitution, to annihilate each other or to be at the mercy of a cruel, self-inflicted fate.

If we ask ourselves how the structure of society and the cultural attitude of man should be changed in order to make human life as satisfying as possible, we should constantly be conscious of the fact that there are certain conditions which we are unable to modify. As mentioned before, the biological nature of man is, for all practical purposes, not subject to change. Furthermore, technological and demographic developments of the last few centuries have created conditions which are here to stay. In relatively densely settled populations with the goods which are indispensable to their continued existence, an extreme division of labor and a highly-centralized productive apparatus are absolutely necessary. The time—which, looking back, seems so idyllic—is gone forever when individuals or relatively small groups could be completely self-sufficient. It is only a slight exaggeration to say that mankind constitutes even now a planetary community of production and consumption.

I have now reached the point where I may indicate briefly what to me constitutes the essence of the crisis of our time. It concerns the relationship of the individual to society. The individual has become more conscious than ever of his dependence upon society. But he does not experience this dependence as a positive asset, as an organic tie, as a protective force, but rather as a threat to his natural rights, or even to his economic existence. Moreover, his position in society is such that the egotistical drives of his make-up are constantly being accentuated, while his social drives, which are by nature weaker, progressively deteriorate. All human beings, whatever their position in society, are suffering from this process of deterioration. Unknowingly prisoners of their own egotism, they feel insecure, lonely, and deprived of the naive, simple, and unsophisticated enjoyment of life. Man can find meaning in life, short and perilous as it is, only through devoting himself to society.

The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil. We see before us a huge community of producers the members of which are unceasingly striving to deprive each other of the fruits of their collective labor—not by force, but on the whole in faithful compliance with legally established rules. In this respect, it is important to realize that the means of production—that is to say, the entire productive capacity that is needed for producing consumer goods as well as additional capital goods—may legally be, and for the most part are, the private property of individuals.

For the sake of simplicity, in the discussion that follows I shall call "workers" all those who do not share in the ownership of the means of production—although this does not quite correspond to the customary use of the term. The owner of the means of production is in a position to purchase the labor power of the worker. By using the means of production, the worker produces new goods which become the property of the capitalist. The essential point about this process is the relation between what the worker produces and what he is paid, both measured in terms of real value. Insofar as the labor contract is "free," what the worker receives is determined not by the real value of the goods he produces, but by his minimum needs and by the capitalists' requirements for labor power in relation to the number of workers competing for jobs. It is important to understand that even in theory the payment of the worker is not determined by the value of his product.

Private capital tends to become concentrated in few hands, partly because of competition among the capitalists, and partly because technological development and the increasing division of labor encourage the formation of larger units of production at the expense of smaller ones. The result of these developments is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society. This is true since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature. The consequence is that the representatives of the people do not in fact sufficiently protect the interests of the underprivileged sections of the population. Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights.

The situation prevailing in an economy based on the private ownership of capital is thus characterized by two main principles: first, means of production (capital) are privately owned and the owners dispose of them as they see fit; second, the labor contract is free. Of course, there is no such thing as a pure capitalist society in this sense. In particular, it should be noted that the workers, through long and bitter political struggles, have succeeded in securing a somewhat improved form of the "free labor contract" for certain categories of workers. But taken as a whole, the present day economy does not differ much from "pure" capitalism.

Production is carried on for profit, not for use. There is no provision that all those able and willing to work will always be in a position to find employment; an "army of unemployed" almost always exists. The worker is constantly in fear of losing his job. Since unemployed and poorly paid workers do not provide a profitable market, the production of consumers' goods is restricted, and great hardship is the consequence. Technological progress frequently results in more unemployment rather than in an easing of the burden of work for all. The profit motive, in conjunction with competition among capitalists, is responsible for an instability in the accumulation and utilization of capital which leads to increasingly severe depressions. Unlimited competition leads to a huge waste of labor, and to that crippling of the social consciousness of individuals which I mentioned before.

This crippling of individuals I consider the worst evil of capitalism. Our whole educational system suffers from this evil. An exaggerated competitive attitude is inculcated into the student, who is trained to worship acquisitive success as a preparation for his future career.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals. In such an economy, the means of production are owned by society itself and are utilized in a planned fashion. A planned economy, which adjusts production to the needs of the community, would distribute the work to be done among all those able to work and would guarantee a livelihood to every man, woman, and child. The education of the individual, in addition to promoting his own innate abilities, would attempt to develop in him a sense of responsibility for his fellow men in place of the glorification of power and success in our present society.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to remember that a planned economy is not yet socialism. A planned economy as such may be accompanied by the complete enslavement of the individual. The achievement of socialism requires the solution of some extremely difficult socio-political problems: how is it possible, in view of the far-reaching centralization of political and economic power, to prevent bureaucracy from becoming all-powerful and overweening? How can the rights of the individual be protected and therewith a democratic counterweight to the power of bureaucracy be assured?

Clarity about the aims and problems of socialism is of greatest significance in our age of transition. Since, under present circumstances, free and unhindered discussion of these problems has come under a powerful taboo, I consider the foundation of this magazine to be an important public service.

[mukto-mona] MBI Munshi has been promoted to Mej. General by Pakistan Defence

On Mon Mar 2, 2009, I posted a write-up in deferent blogs about Mr. MBI Munshi, a sleeping cell activist of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and his Pakistan/ISI connection. I asked him specifically whether Pakistan Defense Forum, a web portal of ISI, would promote him to Major General for his remarkable unmatched loyalist activity for defending Pakistans interest.

As expected, Mr. MBI Munshi did not answer that question directly instead he tried to camouflage his relation citing Indian presence in that forum.

As I predicted, Mr. MBI Munshi now been promoted to Major General, from his earlier rank of Brigadier General. If you want to know, what he has done to promote cyber campaign for Pakistan , please read following.

Until to the date since Maj. General MBI Munshi joined (Join Date: 04-08-2007) Pakistan Defense he has written 2,550 (Two Thousand Five Hundred and Fifty) Therefore he has written on average 3.52 per day. What a glittering loyalty, why not Pakistan Defense will promote such a foot soldier to Maj. General.

His identity is revealed. His connections are revealed. His biasness is revealed. His ideology is revealed. His hidden communal stance is revealed. His loyalty to Pakistan is revealed. What else is left, he is a naked man ready for an anatomy class to be examined.

MBBS classes, exams at DMC suspended following BCL clash

All classes and examinations of MBBS course at Dhaka Medical College (DMC) were suspended following a clash between two rival groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at a dormitory early today (Tuesday).

Campus sources said the clash erupted at 1:45am at Fazle Rabbi Hall between the supporters of Hall unit BCL General Secretary Abul Kalam Asad alias Rajib and former BCL leader Dr Bidyut Barua over establishing supremacy.

Chase and counter chase took place during the melee that left 15-20 activists from both sides injured.

Fourteen of the injured were admitted to the medical section of the college.

"Condition of Rajib is stated critical. He is kept in Intensive Care Unit (ICU)," said a DMCH source.

Meanwhile, college authorities, in an academic council meeting in the morning, suspended all classes and examinations of MBBS course till further notice.

All students were asked to vacate the dormitories by 4:00pm today.

However, the order will not be applicable for foreign students.

[ALOCHONA] CID investigation : Awami big shots found talking to BDR rebels

CID investigation : Awami big shots found talking to BDR rebels

Mamunur Rashid

The law enforcement agencies found some ruling party leaders' direct conversations with the BDR mutineers over mobile phone after examining the mobile phone call lists of the detained BDR jawans on February 25-26 at Peeklkhana.

The law enforcement agencies identified the names which are Home Minister Sahara Khatun, State Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Awami League leader Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, Dhamnondi-Hazaribagh MP Barrister Fazlee Noor Taposh and Mirza Azam.

The BDR mutineers held talks several times with the local MP Taposh.

The mutineers reportedly held talks with the leaders between 11:00 am to 3:00pm on February 25.

At least 820 BDR personnel and five civilians have been shown arrested to date for their alleged involvement in the mutiny.

Law enforcement agencies investigated the mobile numbers of more than 35 BDR personnel.

At least 10 BDR personnel had talked to the ruling party leaders over mobile phone. And 5 detained BDR personnel confessed to the law enforcement agencies that they held talks to one MP and another former MP about their demands.

Law enforcement agencies found that that DAD Touhid, Jawan Salim, Jawan Mofiz, Havilder Obaidul with other 10 BDR jawans held talks with the AL leaders.

Source said BDR Jawan Salim reportedly talked to MP Taposh at about 11: 00 am on the day of occurrence.

Investigation team found Nanak and Taposh mobile numbers from the Cell phone of Jawan Salim.

From 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm on 25 February DAD Touhid talks with the Home Minister Sahara Khatun. Touhid had also talk with Nanak, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir and Mirza Azam over cell phone.

DAD Touhid also had talks with the Home Minister and the state minister for LGRD minister 20 to 25 times on 25 February at about 10 pm to 3pm.

Investigation officers of the BDR preferring mutiny anonymity told the New Nation that they found names of the AL leaders and BDR personnel after verification from the mobile phone operators.

But the AL leaders did not talk before the 25 February, he added.

Jawan Salim told the investigation officers that they took the Taposh's Mobile phone number from the detrained Torab Ali.

Earlier on Monday Criminal Investigation Department (CID) questioned Jamaat-e-Islami leader Barrister Abdur Razzak for more than three hours in connection with the February 25-26 massacre at BDR headquarters.

Nesarul Arif, police superintendent of the CID and in charge of the case, said yesterday that more people might be required to be questioned in the interest of the case.

A lot of big guns we may need to quiz as the case unfolds," Nesarul told reporters after grilling Jama'at-e-Islami leader Abdur Razzak at the CID headquarters.

Meanwhile, The CID again took 8 suspect BDR personnel to remand yesterday.

[ALOCHONA] Islamic Center of Wash DC - A revealing tawdry little Scandal

Alleged Money Scam Roils Islamic Center

In the Islamic Center of Washington, beneath the 160-foot minaret that towers over Embassy Row, a tale of intrigue has simmered for years. It is marked by bitter recriminations between two men who are credited with rehabilitating its reputation as a prominent symbol of Islam in the United States.

The center's business manager has been accused of stealing $430,000 from the mosque in a complicated check scam. The key witness against him is the center's director and imam, a Saudi who says he noticed the crime when he spotted too many checks being written to a gardener.

The Iranian-born business manager has a different story. He says the imam told him to take the money. About half was used to pay off debts and living expenses of two women who were close to the imam, and the rest was used to pay informants for tips about the mosque's security, he said.

It was enough to confound a jury, which deadlocked 9 to 3 after the business manager's three-week trial last May.

Now prosecutors are attempting to retry him, and the manager is firing back. He has accused the imam of committing perjury and obstructing justice. A federal judge is expected to rule in coming weeks on whether to drop the charges or prevent the imam from testifying.

Muslim community leaders say the controversy has remained mostly out of the public eye because the center, built in the 1940s by ambassadors of majority-Muslim nations, is not a typical mosque. The center enjoyed a relatively peaceful existence until the 1979 Iranian revolution, when it underwent an acidic struggle for control between the mosque's board and a dissident group of worshipers, mostly Iranians opposed to the shah of Iran.

There were protests, arrests and other clashes. The board, composed of ambassadors from Muslim nations, locked down the mosque for a time.

In 1984, hoping to put the disputes in the past, the board hired Abdullah Khouj, a professor teaching in his native Saudi Arabia, to be its director and acting imam.

That same year, the board also hired Farzad Darui, who was born in Iran but became a U.S. citizen, as its director of security. Khouj later promoted Darui to be the mosque's manager.

Khouj did not respond to interview requests made at the mosque and by telephone. Darui declined to comment.

Trial testimony and interviews with worshipers indicated that the men were dedicated to improving the mosque, which today is mostly a gathering place for the diplomatic community. It was this mosque that President George W. Bush chose to visit the day after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Its Northwest Washington location, far from the large Muslim population clusters in the suburbs, draws a largely transient base of worshipers that includes commuters, students, travelers and a steady flow of taxi drivers.

Several worshipers who were approached at the mosque said they were surprised by the charges and countercharges, because the two men seemed to genuinely like and respect each other.

Both men echoed those sentiments on the witness stand.

"I trusted him like my own brother," Khouj testified.

"I considered Dr. Khouj a very close friend," Darui testified.

Federal prosecutors say Darui was anything but a friend to Khouj.

They allege that from 2000 through 2006, Darui stole $430,000 from the mosque's "special account," which was funded by the Saudi government to pay mosque expenses. Prosecutors said the theft was devastating: The center had to slash jobs and stop some philanthropic activity because Khouj thought the mosque simply couldn't meet its bills.

"This is a case about fraud, it's about theft, it's about a man who took money that did not belong to him," prosecutor Tejpal Chawla told jurors during Darui's trial.

Prosecutors say Darui took advantage of Khouj's trust and tricked him into signing checks for expenses such as electricity or insurance. After Khouj signed the checks, prosecutors say, Darui altered the payee information, inserting the names of one of his companies, Blue Line Travel or Zaal Inc.

The manager also cashed extra paychecks to staff members, prosecutors say.

Khouj testified that he noticed something was wrong in 2006 when he spotted extra checks being written to a gardener. Later, he testified, he was floored when he saw the bank statements showing unauthorized payments to Darui's firms.

"My feet were frozen," Khouj recalled during trial. "I could not even move. . . . Usually I lead the noon prayer. I couldn't even lead the prayer."

Normally, the FBI would examine the original checks to see whether they had been altered, but the checks had vanished. Without the originals, federal authorities had to use copies of invoices and copies of checks kept by the Saudi Embassy to introduce as evidence.

The lack of forensic evidence also forced prosecutors to rely on Khouj, who came under attack from Darui's legal team.

Darui's attorneys contend that someone doctored the photocopied records to make the manager look guilty. They also say all the checks -- more than 200 of them -- had been authorized by Khouj to finance the housing of the two women or mosque security expenses. Calling the women "mistresses" in court papers, Darui's attorneys say Khouj, who has a wife in Saudi Arabia, married both of the women.

At trial, Darui testified that he did not report the arrangement because he thought the money was Khouj's to spend and did not want to harm the mosque's image. He testified that he and Khouj created fake invoices in case anyone asked about the unusual expenses.

Khouj acknowledged giving the women money from his personal accounts but said he viewed it as an act of charity.

At a recent hearing, one of Darui's attorneys, Victoria Toensing, said Khouj lied about a variety of things, including a claim that he donated his salary to the center over a two-year period.

She also said it was difficult to believe that Khouj caught on to the alleged scam only in 2006 after he noticed an extra monthly check for the gardener. He had signed 58 such "extra" checks over the years, she said.

Federal prosecutors countered that they believe Khouj was truthful on the stand and that inconsistencies in testimony are common in trials.

They urged Chief U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth to let a new jury sort it all out.

[ALOCHONA] Little Bangladesh in LA - Bangladeshi, Korean immigrants spar

Bangladeshi, Korean immigrants spar over LA space
By AMY TAXIN – 11 hours ago
APNEWS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Aditi Mahmud and her family moved from Bangladesh to Los Angeles more than a decade ago, they landed in a gritty neighborhood that has long been a haven for Korean immigrants.

Now, the graduate student and other Bangladeshis want to carve out a special district in Koreatown and name it for their own homeland.

The proposal has shocked and angered Korean-American leaders who have worked for years to turn Koreatown into a Southern California cultural destination.

"There is a pride in calling this Koreatown," said Chang Lee, chairman of the Korean-American Federation of Los Angeles. "The residents and businesspeople, when they heard the news, they were appalled."

As first proposed last year, the district would have cut a half-mile swath through the heart of the nation's largest Korean enclave, a bustling area of Buddhist temples, restaurants and businesses a few miles west of downtown.

Since then, both sides have agreed to create Little Bangladesh on the fringe of Koreatown instead of within its core. But the actual boundaries are still being debated, and a final agreement has yet to be reached.

The turf fight is unusual for Los Angeles, where roughly 40 percent of residents were born abroad.

Over the years, the City Council has granted special district designations to a number of areas, including Chinatown, Thai Town and Little Ethiopia after residents filed petitions seeking the status.

There are no direct financial benefits, but neighborhoods can raise their profiles and perhaps their economic fortunes by being noted on maps and streets signs and getting mentions in the media.

"It's how the rest of the world sees that area," said Paul Ong, a professor of urban planning, social welfare and Asian-American studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. "It gives people a sort of mental map."

Some communities have gone a step further and created assessment districts where merchants agree to tax themselves to fund cleanups, security and cultural events.

Koreatown is already one of the most high-profile areas in the city, but it didn't seek an official designation from the city until February — after the proposed creation of Little Bangladesh.

"I think it is ridiculous for us not to be recognized by the city when everyone de facto does," said Grace Yoo, executive director of the Korean American Coalition.

Immigrants from the nation now known as Bangladesh began arriving in Los Angeles in the late 1960s, with the Koreatown neighborhood becoming a first-stop for many who needed help getting a start in the U.S.

In recent years, more Bangladeshis have left the poor nation with the help of a U.S. government green card lottery, said Preeti Sharma, a community advocate with the nonprofit South Asian Network.

The U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey puts the number of Bangladeshis in Los Angeles County at 3,000. Consulate officials say the figure is actually closer to 50,000.

An estimated 200,000 Koreans live in Los Angeles County.

Mohammed Miah said he wrote the proposal to create Little Bangladesh to increase understanding of his country and his culture. Others see it as a way to lure visitors from outside the neighborhood to its shops, restaurants and events.

"It will bring more crowds," said Majib Siddiquee, chair of the Los Angeles chapter of the Bangladesh Association of California. "The thing we agreed with the Korean community is, this should be an example to see how beautiful the communities can coexist in one little area."

Mahmud believes Little Bangladesh would be a source of pride for immigrants, including her parents.

"They came here for education, for me, for their only child," said Mahmud, whose parents still live in the two-bedroom apartment they rented when they arrived. "They need some sort of recognition that they can still be Bangladeshi here and lift their head up high."

Han Dong-yeop, a Korean sushi chef, just shrugged his shoulders at the prospect of a new name for the neighborhood where he has worked for nearly a decade.

"Why not?" he said. "We live together anyway."

[ALOCHONA] Jamaat Razzaq's meeting with US official day after CID grilling

I thought BNP and Jamaat are not part of the evil axis of USA-India-Israel. May be the right-wing story-tellers can educate/enlighten us on this:

[mukto-mona] Every new Govt starts with topics "New Power Generation in BD" but never implement it

Dear All,

Recently I have analyzed what is happening in Bangladesh power sector which is a life line for Bangladesh future in economical growth  as well as basic human needs.  Every Govt in BD for the last 38 years started with topics that BD needs new power generation and also have put towers many areas, but never worked on increasing the electricity generation.  It's like seeds but not putting in the field.

There could be few reasons:

1) So much money to make in this sector by MPs and Ministers in this sector, is like a gold mine to them.

2) They have lack of knowledge about this sector or lack of expertise.

3) Outside pressure which prevents to make any improvement in this sector.  It may have been realized that if BD gains in this sector,  it will be tough to stop BD progress.

4) No Govt has any vision or clear picture what to do.

I still believe that N-Power is the only option and we need to start today, not tomorrow.  I welcome AL Govt about talking it but I will endorse them only when I see the implementation.  It will take at least 8-10 years but if AL Govt starts the ground works, next Govt will follow through with people pressure.

If nobody starts the ground works and keep all in paper and manifesto, we will be in square one regardless of AL or BNP supporters.

I urge current AL Govt to take bold initiatives, not to get headlines but to get real help for the 150 Million people.  We NRBs are ready to help if required with technologies and finance.

Regards,
M M Chowdhury (Mithu), Chemical Engineer
Director, Political and Economical Development in Bangladesh.
