Sadhus of Ayodhya and Legislators of Sindh Assembly Join for Peace

Hundreds of Sadhus in Ayodhya lead by Mahant Bhavnaath Das, chief of the Hanumangarhi temple and Ministers and legislators from the government and opposition parties in the Sindh Legislative Assembly in Karachi Pakistan became one in signing the Joint Petition against terrorism and war. This Joint Signature Campaign by Citizens of India and Pakistan against terrorism, war posturing and to promote cooperation and peace between India and Pakistan was launched on 9^th January 2009 simultaneously from 22 cities in India and 17 cities in Pakistan.

Civil society organisations in both the countries are facilitating The Signature Campaign in hundreds of cities, towns and villages of India and Pakistan. Many prominent personalities like Mr. Chandrababu Naidu, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Nisar Khuhro, Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Members of Parliament, Editors of Newspapers, academicians, artists, scientists, social activists and others have endorsed the Petition that demands that both the governments of Pakistan and India should practice zero tolerance for religious extremism and terrorism, take appropriate actions to root out terror groups, set up joint action and investigation mechanism, desist from war posturing, address all issues through dialogue and cooperation, and follow all conventions of UN and SAARC against terrorism and for cooperation. The Petition also appeals to the media of both countries to propagate and strengthen positive attitudes for the resolution of all outstanding problems in the region.

Public Meetings and signatures on large banners are being organised on 22^nd January 2009 in over 50 cities and towns of India and 20 cities and towns of Pakistan as part of the ongoing Joint Signature Campaign and in solidarity with a delegation of 20 peace activists from Pakistan that is visiting Delhi from 21-24 January 2009 to promote peace and goodwill between the two countries. The Joint Signature Campaign will conclude on 8^th February 2009.

We the Citizens of Pakistan and India demand that:

· The Government of Pakistan and the Government of India should practice zero tolerance for religious extremism and terrorism in the interest of the very sustenance and prosperity of both the countries..

· Recognising that the problem of terrorism in both the countries are qualitatively different, we urge both the governments to take all appropriate initiates to contain and root out the activities of all fanatic and terrorist groups and catch and punish perpetrators of any acts of terror in their respective countries to make the subcontinent safe and secure for all.

· Both the governments should immediately set up a Joint Action and Investigative Agency for total cooperation and mutual assistance to address and overcome the problem of terrorism effectively and without any further delay.

· War can never be a solution but the beginning of insurmountable problems for both the countries. Hence both the governments should desist from war posturing and immediately engage in meaningful and effective dialogue and actions to address the issue of terrorism and to resolve all other outstanding problems.

· Both the Governments should follow in letter and spirit all the Conventions and Resolutions of UN and SAARC against terrorism and for cooperation to secure an atmosphere of mutual trust and holistic cooperation that alone could ensure security of all citizens and prosperity of the entire region.

· We appeal to the media of both India and Pakistan to play a constructive role in this hour of crisis to propagate and strengthen positive attitudes for the resolution of all the outstanding problems and discourage escalation of conflict and adventurism that could jeopardize peace and prosperity of both the countries.

Chinese media have begun censoring President Barack Obama's inaugural speech, cutting references to "communism" and "dissent" from transcripts.

Even as the speech was being broadcast, his reference to the defeat of "fascism and communism" seemed too much for the state's central broadcaster, CCTV.
It cut away to a flustered presenter, who quickly and nervously had to come up with a question for an unprepared commentator.
Some, but not all, of the major news websites quickly followed suit, posting the full transcript of the speech but with offending words removed.
President Obama was vague in his references to America's future dealings with countries and peoples who do not share "American values", or democratic political principles.
But he did say: "Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions."
He went on to add, some lines later: "To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."
While it is not clear whether Mr Obama meant to refer to China at all, rather than "rogue regimes" such as Zimbabwe and Burma, censors employed by Sina.com, China's biggest news portal, and other websites were taking no chances.
"Communism" disappeared from the first sentence, along with the whole of the second sentence.
In a sign of how censorship in China is now devolved and tailored to an audience, China Daily, the English-language official newspaper which would be aware that most readers would have access to the original, not only left the words in its online transcript but even included them in the front-page story on the speech in its print edition.

(A Karnataka dacoit with links to a radical Hindu rightwing group has confessed to having carried out the Hubli district court bombing of May10, 2008.
The blast took place as the first phase of polling for the Karnataka Assembly elections was on - in a magistrate's courtroom where cases against top SIMI leaders including Safdar Nagori were scheduled to be heard two days later.

Does anybody remember the bomb blasts in Hubli (Karnataka, May 2008) courts last year when preparations were on for the coming state assembly elections ? These blasts which took place on a holiday did not witness any casuality although they extensively damaged the court premises. But the most important part played by these blasts was the atmosphere it created in favour of the BJP.
As it always happens after any such mysterious sounding blasts, many innocents belonging to minority community were illegally detained and quite a few among them also were booked for their 'role' in the blasts. The police had promptly claimed that 'sleeper cells belonging to LeT and SIMI' had executed the blasts.
One still remembers the manner in which Sangh Parivar had tried to exploit the bomb blasts in its favour. The former Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, had even used the bomb blasts case to attack the Congress led UPA government at the centre for 'soft-pedalling the issue concerning terror' and accusing it of responsibility' for the increase in terrorist activities in the country'.
The Hubli bar association had followed many other bar associations in different parts of the country to immediately pass a 'unanimous' resolution that they would not defend any 'terrorists' supposed to be involved in the blasts. And when a conscientous lawyer named Ibrahim Jalagir tried to file bail application on behalf of the detained he came under organised attack. His office was vandalised and he alongwith his colleague were badly beaten up by these hoodlums.
Now when the BJP government is firmly in the saddle and the accused in the bomb blasts case have already spent months together behind jails, has come a news which is definitely not soothing to the ears of the the saffron commanders.The IGP of North Karnataka Ragavendera Auradhkar recently addressed a press conference telling the media that the mysterious bomb blasts which had struck the Hubli courts last year were the handiwork of a criminal gang led by one Nagraj Jambagi .
According to the IGP it was the same team which had planted a bomb on the Belgaum-Hubli highway last year.However, this bomb failed to explode as it was raining heavily. After high drama, the bomb squad had finally retrieved the bomb.In fact Nagraj had led the gang which was also involved in seven murder cases in North Karnataka and several cases of abduction also. Interestingly the police had stumbled upon this gang while investigating the murder of a Bagalkot businessman.

Hindutva terror has struck Karnataka. The Karnataka police arrested nine persons with Sangh Parivar links for allegedly setting off a bomb in the court of the junior first class magistrate in Hubli May 2008. They were also accused of planting a live bomb on the Dharwad-Belgaum road. This points to the presence of Hindutva terror suspects in the state.
The police had initially blamed SIMI for both the Hubli court blast and the planting ofthe live bomb.
Police have also seized live bombs, gun powder, lethal weapons, Rs 11.08 lakh in cash, gold, silver and two motorbikes from them. Apart from Nagaraj Jambagi (24), a resident of Heggur Plot in Bilagi taluk; the arrested persons include Ramesh Pawar (24), Basavaraj Diggi (22), Manjunath Binjawadagi (19), Deepak Govindakar (28), Lingaraj Jalgar (24) - all from Bagalkot; Basavaraj Rugi (20) of Honakuppi village in Gokak taluk; Hanamanth Sainasakali (22), and Channabasappa Hunasagi (35) of Indi taluk in Bijapur.
Ofcourse although the police do not seem to be forthcoming on divulging the political connections of the group and sharing the important information about its alleged Sri Ram Sena connections anyone familiar with the Hubli-Dharwad region would have many other details about the gang of criminals, their political affiliations and their other deeds.
Many residents of Bagalkot have been witness to the Trishul Deekshe ceremony in the area wherein many of the arrested had wholeheartedly participated. For the uninitiated it may be told that VHP international secretary Praveen Togadia had popularised this trident-wielding programme as part of mobilising Hindus. Nagaraj Hollbasappa Jambagi, the gang's leader has also been closely associated with Sri Ram Sene,(SRS) a 'saffron front'.
A social worker from Hubli told 'Mailtoday' (Jan 13, 2009) that the '[b]ombings were part of an effort to set up a militant Hindutva organisation.' "Jambagi is the right hand man of SRS chief Pramod Mutalik (known as Karnataka's Togadia), who is setting up a Rashtra Raksha Army. He does not believe in the police or the armed forces. His people are given weapon's training. There are several such groups here. They had a five-day training camp in Koodala Sangama recently."
It may be known that Pramod Mutalik happened to be the former Convener of the South India Unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and of the Bajrang Dal. He was dismissed 2005-06 following inflammatory speeches made by him on the Baba Budan Giri issue and is presently the founder and National President of the Rashtriya Hindu Sena and of the Shreerama Sene, active in Karnataka. Mutalik had recently affiliated with the Shiv Sena of Bal Thackeray.
Few months back when Karnataka witnessed anti-Christian violence.Shreerama Sene had publicly claimed credit for the attacks and desecrations of Christian churches, schools and convents and thereafter for the attacks on protesting Christian youth, women and children by invading Christian properties.This open violence had forced Christians taking to blocking the streets in protest against police complicity and inaction against the fanatics.
The fact that the Karnataka happens to be a BJP ruled state where the police allegedly face political pressure and were unwilling to go on record about the Sangh Parivar links of the accused, the establishment would not be too willing to expose the real connections of the criminal-terrorists. Taking into consideration this dilly-dallying on part of the government organisations who had been fighting for communal harmony have raised a strong demand 'to arrest the National President of SRS Pramod Mutalik'.(Hubli court blast: Demand to arrest Shri Ram Sena chief, S.O. Koppal: There was a strong demand in Koppal by All Progressive confederation (Pragati Sanghatana) demanding the state to arrest the National president of Shri Ram Sena Pramod Mutalik immediately whose organisation is responsible for the blasts carried out in Hubli court.
Speaking on the occasion, the State president of Karnataka Sauharda Vedike Basavraj Suli bhavi said that Pramod Mutalik is responsible for creating an atmosphere of disharmony and hatred in the state. He is a liability in a peaceful and his organization can cause a lot of harm in the society. His organization is involved in Hubli court blast and a failed attempt to blast the NH Bridge in Dharward. It is very much possible that the Shri Ram sena is positively involved in this. ..
He also expressed his anger that only the activists are arrested and not the chief of the Shri Ram Sena. It should be noted that Pramod Mutalik was an active activist of Bajarang dal earlier, later he left that organisation to form Shri Ram Sena. He also had declared that he will form a suicide bomber for which he already has enrolled many of them.
With pressure building up for his arrest, Pramod Mutalik has flatly denied any knowledge of Jambagi and his gang. Much on the lines of his Sangh veterans who were put on the defensive when their links with Sadhvi Pragya and others in the Malegaon bomb blast case became apparent, he declared that they do not hold SRS membership, although he promised legal aid to the accused. . It is a different matter that none from the Sangh Parivar network maintains any membership register which suits them in dissociating the 'parent organisation' from any wrongdoing of its associates. Inadvertently or so Pramod Mutalik was imitating his other Sangh Parivar veterans especially BJP leadership which had denied any knowledge of the Malegaon accused but had readily agreed to defend them.He was even ready to 'start an agitation to defend them.'
Indian Express (13 Jan 2009) further adds that according to IGP Auradkar Jambagi had procured the bombs from one Hanumant Sainsakali. a 22 year old technical diploma student from Indi on the Maharashtra border. It is worth noting that investigations in the aftermath of the bomb blasts in the Hubli courts had shown that the bomb was similar to the one used in the May 18, 2007 blast at Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid.
One needs to remember that when the Malegaon investigations had started involvement of Hindutva terrorists in similar incidents had also come under scanner. The Mecca Masjid blasts as well as blasts in Samjhauta Express which had remaind unsolved were further investigated. Although initially the ATS Maharashtra had not deciphered any connection with Karnataka with the Malegaon blasts as of now there seems to be a qualitative change in the picture.Karnataka connection to the Malegaon blast is also being explored.
As we go to the press a team from ATS, Maharashtra is camping in Karnataka to hunt for one Pravin Mutalik. A report filed by a reporter of the Times of India tells us that ( TOI, Jan 18, 2009, ATS team in K'taka to nab suspect) Mutalik could be 'one of the three bomb planters in the Malegaon case.' "As per our investigation Mutalik was very much present in Malegaon alongwith wanted accused Ramji Kalangasara and Sandeep Dange.' Mutalik has been termed as a technical expert.
There is no denying the fact that Hubli, which happens to be a small town situated 425 km northwest of Bangalore, and which had remained more famous for many stalwarts of Hindustani and Karnataka classical music living in its environs, is a pale image of itself today. No lover of classical music would have ever imagined in their wildest dreams that a day would arise when it would be witness to a music of a different kind.
But as things stand today Huballi (Hubli's new name, the name Hubballi literally means "Hu" - flower and "Balli" - creeper in Kannada.) seems to be metamorphosing into 'birthplace' of Hindutva terror in Karnataka and a strong link in the emerging pan Indian network of Hindutva terror.

CEC blames ministers, MPs for influencing upazila polls

The chief election commissioner, ATM Shamsul Huda, said the upazila elections were marked by the capturing of polling centres, keeping voters away and snatching of ballot papers and boxes by some people.
   'There have been incidents of unwarranted pressure,' Shamsul told reporters after the voting in the afternoon.
   Based on the reports of intimidation and vandalism by political activists in polling centres, the commission suspended elections to four upazilas and voting in many polling centres.
   He alleged the presence of ministers and lawmakers in many polling centres influenced the polls process and vitiated the atmosphere.
   Shamsul, who conducted the parliamentary polls less than a month ago under the military-controlled interim government, said he had expected the upazila elections to be fair as was the case with the national elections as a result of a change in political culture.
   'I did not expect the ministers and lawmakers would influence the elections. It is really unfortunate that they were in the polling stations to influence voters,' said Shamsul, who earlier requested the government to take steps against any sort of political influence. Although there has been no allegation against any polling officials, a political quarter intimidated the poor officials.
   Asked about the reasons for the low turnout, he said he had no satisfactory answer.
   'We will definitely investigate the matter later,' he said, adding he had taken adequate security arrangement for voters. There were fewer incidents of violence, but the capturing of polling booths, stuffing of ballot boxes and driving away the rival polling agents were rampant.
   Asked about his satisfaction in holding of the local polls, he said, 'It seems dissatisfaction remains.'
   Election commissioner Sakhawat Hossain, who was also present at the briefing, accused the ruling Awami League of violence and intimidation in polling centres..

UZ polls held amid violence : 200 injured, 30 arrested, turnout low, ballot papers-boxes snatched, polling held up in 6 upazilas, over hundred centres

The Upazila election was marked by widespread violence, lack of enthusiasm among voters, capturing of polling stations, snatching of ballot boxes, stuffing of ballot papers and violation of election code of conduct leaving over 200 people injured.

Members of law enforcing agencies arrested over 30 persons, including election officers, during the election on charge of violation of election code of conduct.

Election to six upazilas, out of all 481 upazila parishads, were postponed by the Election Commission on different charges including barring voters to cast their votes, snatching of ballot boxes, stuffing of ballot papers and showing influence of vested quarters.

The upazilas where polling was postponed yesterday are Ramganj in Luxmipur district, Brahmanbaria Sadar, Belkuchi in Sirajganj district, Barura in Comilla and Ukhiya in Cox's Bazar. Earlier on January 15, the election to Ukhiya upazila in the Khagrachari hill district was postponed.

Besides, polling at many polling centres at different parts of the country has also been postponed considering deterioration of election environment.

The areas where violence and irregularities occurred include Bhola, Pabna, Chandpur, Barguna, Munshiganj, Comilla, Bagerhat, Khulna, Patuakhali, Sherpur, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Sirajganj, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Nilphamari and Dhaka's Keraniganj area.

Turnout of voters in most of the polling centres across the country was around 50 percent that was above 80 per cent during the December 29 parliamentary polls.

The presence of voters was thin in the morning while voters' turnout started to pick up later in the day.

In his reaction, Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda expressed his dissatisfaction over low turnout and influence of ministers and MPs belonging to the ruling party in the upazila election.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Abdul Latif Biswas allegedly stayed at Sirajganj during the polls and influenced the election in favour of ruling party candidates.

Wide range of violent clashes including bomb explosion, exchange of bullets, damaging a UN election observer car marked the third upazila polls held after 19 years.

In some places voters could not exercise their franchise as the activists of the ruling Awami League reportedly attempted to take over centres that led to low turnout in the polls. A total of 73,517,849 voters were supposed to cast their vote in 32,356 polling centres under the 480 upazila areas where 3,316 aspirants are in the race for the post of chairman, 2,879 for vice-chairman, and 1,936

women as vice-chairperson.

14 candidates have been elected vice-chairpersons uncontested, 9 of them woman.

It may be mentioned that the first election for the Upazila Parishads was held in 1985 and the second in 1988.

The polling began at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm without any interval.

The government had taken three-tier security measures to maintain law and order during the elections. Some 5 lakh security personnel, including 38,000 army troops, have been deployed throughout the country for smooth and peaceful holding of the upazila elections.

Our Barisal Correspondent reports upazila election in Barisal region was held peacefully but without any enthusiasm in most places with low vote casting rate of about 50-60 percent and some stray incidents.

Police opened fire to foil attempt of capturing vote centre by AL candidates and vote casting stopped for some time in two centres of Mehendiganj upazilas Police arrested two election activists there.

In Chittagong, voting was held peacefully at 14 Upazila in Chittagong amid poor turnout in many centres.

The number of voters was thin in Patia AJ Chowdhury College and Talimul Haque Madrassa, Foujdarhat KM High School and some other polling centres in the first two hours.

According to the presiding officers, the turnout was less than seven percent while it was 25-30 percent in the national elections.

Our Sirajganj correspondent said voting was halted at Belkuchi Upazila after the followers and supporters of ruling Awami League barred voters from casting voting.

Noakhali correspondent informed four-party backed chairman candidate Fakhrul Islam Faruk withdrew his candidature from Companyganj Upazila polls in Noakhali alleging attacks on his supporters, takeover of polling centre and indifference of administration.

Supporters of Awami League-backed candidate AFM Babul attempted to take away ballot papers at Kalikapur Government Primary School centre at Sonaimuri Upazila in Nokhali. As they failed they tore a number of pages of the voter list from the two polling booths. Voting was halted for half an hour in Baktarchar HIgh School centre in Keraniganj as the polling agents of 'Rickshaw' symbol allegedly snatched 77 ballot papers.

Police detained Shahidul Islam, Muluk Chan, Suruj Zaman, Moslem and Abu Taleb in this connection.

Comilla Correspondent reports the EC suspended the vote casting of Barura Upazila under Comilla district following massive vote hijacking and series of clashes between the two rival groups.

Besides, the voting at some polling centres of Nangalcourt, Sadar Daksin, Doudkandi, Monohargonj upazilas of Comilla were held amid incidents of clash, ballot hijack and arrest. At least 56 people were injured in several upazilas of Comilla.

Barura Upazila Officer Wahidul Islam told the reporters that some miscreants snatched 600 ballot papers from Kacia Pokuria and Pilgiri centre under Barura upazila.

Police detained six persons including a polling office identified as Md Ibrahim while they were involved in irregularities during vote casting at Kachia Pukuria Centre.

At least 25 persons including two policemen were injured following a clash between police and vote snatchers at Ratanpur Madrasha Centre at Daskin Upazila in Comilla.

Two Awami League rivals exchanged gun fire at Uttar and Daskin centres of Panchgacia of Daudkandi upazila under the district.

Four persons received bullet injuries at that time. Police arrested ten persons for their involvement in the incident.

On the other hands, 31 persons were injured at Monohargonj and Chaddagram upazilas.

Our Kishorganj correspondent said that vote casting was suspended in three centre due to the clash between the two factions of AL-backed candidates.

He informed that the vote casting at Hashempur High School of Mitha Moin Upazilla and Khayerpur High School of Austagram Upazilla was totally suspended where Garbichhudia centre of Hossainpur was hanged for 20 minutes.

Munshiganj correspondent reports voting was disrupted at Shimulia Government Primary School of Guagachhia union under Gazaria Upazila in Munshiganj after ballot papers were snatched. Polling agents of a candidate broke the ballot box and fled with ballot papers. The presiding officer of the centre also fled the scene later.

Police held a school student, Jewel, with a pistol at Baushia Government Primary School under Gazaria Upazila.

Our Thakurgaon correspondent said police detained four persons including an assistant polling officer from Sadar and Baliadangi upazila in separate incidents. Of them, mobile court awarded six-month jail term to three of them.

Cox's Bazar correspondent reports voting was stopped for 20 minutes at Kakara High School at Chakaria in Cox's Bazar after workers and supporters of two chairmen candidates clashed at the start of voting. Election to Ukhia Upazila in Cox's Bazar was called off on Wednesday night over violence that left around 80 injured.

Brahmanbaria correspondent reports violence in Natai Government Primar School of Natai union of Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila left the presiding officer injured. MK Masuk was admitted to Brahmanbria Ssadar Hospital in a critical condition.

Pabna correspondent reports 10 people were injured in a clash between supporters of two chairman candidates at Char Bhabanipur polling centre of Berar Upazila. Police arrested Mujahid Hossain Mohan and Shahin.

In Khulna police arrested a man, Abdur Rahim, from Islampur Government Primary School centre at Koira Upazila on charges of casting fake votes.

In Patuakhali the mobile court jailed a polling agent to six months for barring voters from casting votes and attempting to influence people to vote for a particular candidate.

2.Yes, we have here in Europe very active Christian brotherhood
inviting us to the way of Christianity. Months back I was in Italy
when in some weekend morning I hear a knock at my door. Opening I

In association with police, leaders and workers of different associate bodies of ruling Awami League have started collecting toll from retailers, traders, businessmen, transport owners, footpath vendors at different places in the city as well as throughout the country.

These groups had remained inactive in the last seven years but soon after the formation of new government by Awami League-led grand alliance, branded criminals and extortionists belonging to Awami League's associate bodies like Chattra League, Jubo League and Sechhashebak League have become very active in collecting tolls from different points including Karwan Bazar, Farm Gate, Indira Road, Motojheel, Shahbagh, shopping malls, supermarkets, bus ticket counters and footpath hawkers everyday.

"After the death of Picchi Hannan, other extortionists had also gone into hiding and we were running our business smoothly. But soon after the formation of new government, various groups introducing themselves as the leaders and activists of Chattra League, Jubo League and Sechhashebak League have started visiting our business places and demanding tolls. Even these groups have been locked in clashes among themselves over establishing supremacy in the area. We are very much concerned and worried over such illegal toll collection from us by the associate bodies of ruling Awami League," talking to this correspondent a green vegetable wholesaler of Kawran Bazar alleged.

Talking to The Bangladesh Today other businessmen said Jubo League Office Secretary of Dhaka North (unit) Abdullah-Al-Mamun along with Awlad, Kamal, Helal, Shafique, Asad, Bashet and Rana are extorting tolls from green vegetable whole-sellers and retailers on the pretext of arranging reception programme of the newly elected Awami League MPs.

"Awami League leader Shamim Hasan, also Dhaka City Corporation Commissioner of Ward No-39, is yet to take any initiative to refrain his accomplices from collecting tolls. It is alleged that Awami League leaders are continuously holding secret meetings with the Officers-in-Charge of concerned police stations in the city for collecting and distributing tolls between themselves," the businessmen said.

The local people said Ashaduzzaman Kamal, the newly elected MP from Awami League, is embarrassed as he does not have any control over these elements. "Our local MP is an honest man but failed to control other leaders and activists of Awami League and its associate bodies," they said.

"We are paying taka 500 as per head toll to Haidar, Shahabuddin, Harun, Chunnu and Alamgir agents of Police Sergeant Maruf and the Jubo League Secretary of Ward No 99 Shah Alam regularly to continue our business. A green vegetable retailer has to pay taka 500 and tea stall and fruit shop have to pay taka 200 to the police sergeant and Jubo League leader. Simultaneously every shop owner has to pay taka 100 to the Farm Gate Police box on a regular basis. Apart from these, we pay taka 200 as rent on daily basis to the leaseholders for running our business. As a result we are compelled to sell vegetable at double rate," Dulal and Mostafa, vegetable retailers at Indira Road said.

Talking to this correspondent Officer-in-Charge of Tejgaon Police station Lutfor Rahman wanted to know why such question has been asked to him. "We are not alone responsible to oversee the situation in the locality. Other law enforcers including RAB, CID and DB police are also responsible to take action against such illegal activities. I will ask sergeant Maruf today (Wednesday) as to why allegations are brought against him in connection with collecting toll," he added.

The local traders said the extortionists are not coming to us directly and they usually send their agents to the business establishments for collecting toll. "No initiative to contain the crime like extortion will succeed unless the government takes action against the local influential circles who indulge in this crime through their paid terrorists."

When asked about the extortion, a highly-placed source in the police department said "our forces are working sincerely and we have given them instructions to check all types of crimes by any means. If the businessmen do not complain to us how we can take action against the extortionists."

Besides, agents of Awami League leaders and activists in groups go to bus ticket counters to collect toll from them. And they also extort money from the bus contractors when their vehicles stop at different stoppages.

City dwellers have become the main targets of the terrorists, creating a sense of insecurity among the common people. The terrorists at different places in the city are committing daring robberies every night under the very nose of law enforcers

Meanwhile, the most wanted terrorists are now in Dhaka and they are committing big crimes like killings and robberies creating panic among city dwellers and the members of law and enforcing agencies, according to a source.

Almost 15 days prior to arrest of Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, a number of leading leaders of the party named Abdur Razzak, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Sajeda Chowdhury alongwith an internationally known lawyer met some of the senior millitary officials at a house in Dhaka's Gulshan area to discuss the possible reform in the party. During this meeting, eminent Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu opined that, as first step of any such reform, Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina should be immediately arrested. His opinion was strongly supported by two other figures in the millitary backed interim government named Barrister Moinul Hussain and Major General [Retired] M Abdul Matin. It is learnt that, a sensitive intelligence agency in the country has already the video and audio version of this secret meeting, which may be handed over to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina anytime from now as the government has already started an investigation to findout the culprits who conspired and planned the arrest of the Awami League chief.

It may be mentioned here that, although Barrister Moinul Hussain and Major General [Retired] M Abdul Matin are known as pro-BNP men, they tried to exhibit their neutrality in public although they tried to do everything in screwing up the political future of the largest political party in Bangladesh.

According to several sources, mentioned leaders of Awami League were planning a coup within the party after sending Sheikh Hasina in prison. But, their conspiracy theory could not work due to very timely and effective initiative by two of the leaders of Awami League namely Zillur Rahman and Syed Ashraful Islam.

It is further learnt that, Dr. Debopriya Bhattacharya was also amongst the masterminds in seeing total reform in both the large political parties in the country. He [Debopriya] was also interested in taking Jatiyo Party in the same plan, but this party had always been considered as a 'friendly ally' of the millitary backed interim regime as former dictator Hussain Muhammed Ershad was actively helping the interim government through various ways. When a government in the Middle East stopped recruiting Bangladeshi workers, Ershad visited that country being an unofficial envoy of the millitary backed interim government and succeeded in removing the ban.

Hussain Muhammed Ershad was personally eager to see both the female leaders ousted from the leadership of their respective parties.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is already aware of the total conspiracy and the role of the conspirators in sending her in prison thus pushing the fate of her party into extreme difficulty. The forming of the new cabinet by the AL government is the reflection of a deep mental injury of Sheikh Hasina which she has been suffering from since her arrest in June, 2007 on various charges including extortion and the revival of old graft case involving purchase of MiG aircrafts from Russia, according to sources. This was the prime reason for the exclusion of Abdur Razzak, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed and Suranjit Sengupta -- together they are known as RATS -- with some other senior leaders including Sajeda Chowdhury in the cabinet, they said.

According informed sources, the AL circles tend to believe that the RATS were the prime movers of party reforms [popularly known as "Minus Two Theory" with the help of a powerful security agency] who attempted to implement it with others help. They also say that before holding the next Awami League central council meeting sometime later this year, the chances of including other suspected minor reformists in the cabinet is almost zero.

Inside stories of Noor Ali's case against Sheikh Hasina is also getting leaked. According to information, a government officer, who played key role in organizing 'Janatar Mancha' joined Noor Ali's company as an employee after he was terminated from job. This former official secretly spoke to high ranking officials in a sensitive intelligence agency and finally managed to 'manage' Noor Ali by putting various threats and pressures in lodging the case against Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina and some other leaders of her party. Noor Ali although sought apology with Sheikh Hasina right after her return from United States and even worked in favor of the candidate of the Grand Alliance in the respective constituency, it is learnt that, Ali may also face legal consequences like former Chairman of Westmont Power Limited. General diaries in regard to both the matters are already lodged by police and formal cases will be lodged in several weeks against both the controversial businessmen for their involvement in harrassing and defaming Sheikh Hasina and other members of her party and cabinet.

Another person named Azam J Chowdhury, who also lodged an extortion case against Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders, although withdrew his complaint after Hasina returned home, will also face similar legal consequences.

Meanwhile, deprived heavy-weight leaders in Awami League are continuing to conspire in putting pressure on the present government by instigating unlawful activities within Campuses in Bangladesh as well as extortion, land grabbing, murder etc., in the country. It is also learnt that, some angry heavyweight leaders are privately telling their followers to do everything in destorting the law and order situation in the country to greatly discredit the newly formed cabinet of youngstars mostly, in the present government.
