Dear members,

Assalamu Alaikum. Please see the news from daily Star below and my comments thereon.

Shah Abdul Hannan

Minister Mr Nurul Islam Nahid has said  " The government will formulate the National Education Policy within three to four months based on the Qudrat-e-Khuda Education Commission report of 1974."
Much water has flown down the river since 1974.The present situation is much different than 1974.So government should not go to Kudrate Khuda commission, not even form a new commission.Any new commission will create new conflicts in our ideologically polarised country.
At the policy level our education do not have much problem, we lack only proper implementation. If some changes are needed , do it without new commission but as government decision, item by item with proper consultation with all sided of national divide.

The people with whom minister met represents mostly discredited left old-guards.Governme nt should not give much credence to such people.

Modern education policy soon

Policy to be based on Qudrat-e-Khuda Commission report, says minister

The government will formulate the National Education Policy within three to four months based on the Qudrat-e-Khuda Education Commission report of 1974.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said this at a meeting with 30 renowned academicians at the secretariat yesterday.

He said the entire education system from primary to tertiary level would be re-designed according to the education policy.

"There is no need to form a new education commission. Considering recommendations from the academicians, we have decided to prepare a National Education Policy based on the Qudrat-e-Khuda Commission's report," the education minister said.

He hoped that government will able to complete the education policy by three to four months adding the policy will guide us to free the country from illiteracy.

Nahid also said government will also try to introduce an unified primary education system across the country merging the existing 11-kind of primary education system to end the discriminations in primary education.

MINISTER MEETING WITH ACADEMICIANS < /b>
The renowned academicians urged the education minister to stop the culture of forming new education commission to ignore the political interest.

Most of the academicians suggested formulating the national education policy based on Qudrat-e-Khuda Commission so that secular and science based education system can be introduced.

They also suggested that the report of the Qudrat-e-Khuda Commission should be slightly modified to make the policy fit for the country's existing education system.

"Millions of public money were spent for previous seven education commissions by different political governments. But they didn't implement the recommendations due to the apprehension of demonstrations by the opposition, said Prof Dr Zillur Rahman Siddique, former VC of Jahangirnagar University.

Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Chairman of Computer Science department of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, said government should immediately cancel the postponed 'uni-track education system' and introduce 'real unified education system' merging three systems--Bangla, English and Madrasa.

Prof Serajul Islam Choudhury emphasised on quality books and skilled teachers for ensuring quality education in the country.

UGC Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam suggested forming several advisory committees for improving education system from primary to tertiary level.

Dr Sirajul Islam, Abdullah Abu Sayeed, DU VC AAMS Arefin Siddique and its Pro-VC Harun-Or-Rashid, Brac University VC Prof Zamilur Reza Chowdhury and renowned academician Momtaz Uddin Patwary, Prof Rangalal Sen, Mostafa Zabbar, Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, Prof Ajoy Roy and Khandakar Bazlul Huq, among other academicians, were present at the meeting.

QUDRAT-E-KHUDA COMMISSION
Qudrat-e-Khuda Education Commission was formed in 1972 headed by the leading educationist and scientist Dr Qudrat-e-Khuda. The commission submitted its report to the then Sheikh Mujib government in May 1974.The commission suggested some major changes in the primary, secondary and higher secondary levels.

[mukto-mona] Why Every Attempt Fails?

Why Every Attempt Fails?

Jiten Roy, Ph.D.

Yes, I am talking about the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. What else? Most of the conflicts around the world ultimately
come to an end, but not this one. It keeps going, like Energizer
Bunny. Who do we blame? If we ask this question to some one in that
region, he/she will naturally align with his/her own side. How about
the rest of the world? They are divided also. Muslim world blames USA
for supporting Israel, and Israel blames Muslim-world for meddling
with their issues. When Muslims-world supports Palestine, it's OK, but
when USA supports Israel it's a problem. Can you imagine what would
have happened to Israel, if USA did not back them? The promise of the
Iranian President, Mr. Ahmmadenazad, would have been fulfilled by now.
This very fact obligates USA to support Israel.

I feel bad for the ordinary Palestinian folks, who are caught in the
crossfire. Then I wonder how situation turned into such a mess. The
only plausible explanation that I can come up with is that,
Palestinian leaders, with the help of their good neighbors, like, Iran
and Syria, have successfully transformed this struggle into a
religious battle between Muslim and Jew, and many Muslims around the
world, either knowingly or unknowingly, have been using this issue to
rally Muslim-Umma around the world against Infidels/Kafirs, and they
are not interested to end it. In other words, Palestine conflict has
become a poster-child of the Jihad-movement around the world.

Now, when this religious battle be won? The answer is: it can be won
when one of the two groups is wiped out. Unfortunately, this seems to
be the goal of the majority Palestinians, who are the ardent
supporters of the Hamas movement in Palestine. Unfortunately, the most
compelling reason for the conflict, the religious persecution and
territorial issue, has taken a back seat.

According to historical record, the Canaanites were the
earliest known inhabitants of Palestine, which has been a natural
battleground for the great powers since 3000 BC. In 1000 BC, after
several attempts, David, the great Israeli king, defeated the
Philistines, and eventually assimilated with the Canaanites. The unity
of Israel and adjacent empires enabled David to establish a large
independent state, with its capital at Jerusalem. Under David's son
and successor, Solomon, Israel enjoyed peace and prosperity, but at
his death in 922 BC the kingdom was divided into Israel in the north
and Judah in the south. During 722-721 BC, nearby empires resumed
their expansion, the divided Israelites could no longer maintain their
independence. Israel fell to Assyria.

According to these historical facts, there was an independent Israel
in the northern Palestine until early 700 BC. Israeli and Canaanites
lived side by side peacefully during that time. These Canaanites are
the ancestors of the modern day Palestinians.

In 586 BC, Judah was conquered by Babylonia (Iraq), which
destroyed Jerusalem and exiled most of the Jews living there. The
Temple was sacked and set fire to, and razed to the ground. The Royal
Palace and all the great houses were destroyed, the population carried
off in chains to Babylon. And they lamented on their long march into
exile.

In 539 BC, Cyrus the Great of Persia conquered Babylonia and he
permitted the Jews to return to Judea, a district of Palestine. Under
Persian rule the Jews were allowed considerable autonomy. They rebuilt
the walls of Jerusalem and codified the Mosaic Law, the Torah, which
became the code of social life and religious observance. During 141-63
BC, Jews revolted under the Maccabees and set up an independent state.

Again, the existence of a Jewish state can be found in around 100 BC.

Muslim Arab armies invaded Palestine and captured Jerusalem in
AD 638. The Arab conquest began 1300 years of Muslim presence in the
region, which then became known as Filastin. The Muslim rulers did not
force their religion on the Palestinians, and more than a century
passed before the majority converted to Islam. The remaining
Christians and Jews were considered People of the Book. They were
allowed autonomous control in their communities and guaranteed
security and freedom of worship.

Under the British rule, the situation changed. In 1914, with
the outbreak of World War I, Britain promised the independence of Arab
lands under Ottoman rule, including Palestine, in return for Arab
support against Turkey which had entered the war on the side of
Germany. Jewish leaders started lobbying for a homeland. In 1917, the
British government issued the Balfour Declaration on November 2, in a
letter to a British Zionist leader from the foreign secretary Arthur
J. Balfour promising him the establishment of a national home for the
Jewish people in Palestine.

In 1918, after WW I ended, Jews began to migrate to Palestine,
which was set a side as a British mandate with the approval of the
League of Nations in 1922. Large-scale Jewish settlement and extensive
Zionist agricultural and industrial enterprises in Palestine began
during the British mandatory period. In 1929, large-scale attacks on
Jews by Arabs rocked Jerusalem. Palestinians killed 133 Jews and
suffered 116 deaths. Sparked by a dispute over use of the Western Wall
of Al-Aqsa Mosque. But the roots of the conflict lay deeper in Arab
fears of the Zionist movement, which aimed to make at least part of
British-administered Palestine a Jewish state.

Thus British invasion and occupation of Palestine ended in 15
May 1948. British decided to implement the partition plan calling for
establishment of a Jewish state. The same day, the armies of Egypt,
Transjordan (now Jordan), Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq joined Palestinian
and other Arab guerrillas in a full-scale war (first Arab-Israeli
War). The Arabs failed to prevent establishment of a Jewish state, and
the war ended with four UN-arranged armistice agreements between
Israel and Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria.

Since then, the saga continues until today. As mentioned above,
attempts to establish a Jewish homeland at the heart of Palestine
started about 3000 years ago, which finally completed in 1948 after
British colonial rule ended. At about the same time, in 1947, the
British Empire also curved out Pakistan for Muslims from India. In
this case, Muslim leaders were able to convince the British ruler to
establish a homeland for their community, just like the Jewish leaders
did. The ultimate losers, in these situations, are the unfortunate
minorities in the region.

Can these divisions be reversed? The answer is no, and, therefore, the
prudent thing for Palestinians to do is to share the land with Jews,
when opportunity arises. Many could say, Israelis are settlers and,
therefore, they do not deserve a part of the land. If this argument is
valid, North America and Australia should be given to the Red-Indians
and Aboriginals. A country belongs to its citizens, irrespective of
their sects or religions, and the land belongs to landowners,
irrespective of their historic immigration profiles. It is fruitless
to put forward an argument that Palestinians are the original
inhabitants of the land and therefore Jews have to vacate the entire
land. Palestinians cannot claim entire Israel, as Indians cannot claim
Pakistan and Bangladesh anymore. A lot of demographic changes have
occurred around the world over thousands of years, and it is time to
admit the reality.

Why no one has been able to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? In
my view, every solution is geared towards solving the territorial
issue only, without addressing the underlying religious issue that has
created such unbelievable hatred between Palestinian Muslims and Jews.
As a result, no amount of land handover from the Israeli side can
satisfy Palestinians. They want entire Israel, meaning that they want
to wipe out Israel from the face of the earth, as Ahmmadanazad, the
Iranian President, often promise. The saddest thing is that majority
Palestinian people still believe that it is an achievable goal, and
anything short of that is unacceptable. Could this be the reason why
no attempt has so far been able to produce any tangible result? I
really think so, what say you.

What's needed to happen is that the Palestinians should recognize that
this struggle is not against Jews; it's against Israel, and Jews
happen to live there; the fight is for ending religious persecution
and territorial issues. There is no need to consider all Jews as
enemy. Bosnian Muslims got their homeland within a few months with
the US and NATO helps; they never turned their battle into a fight
between Muslim and Christians. Until a similar condition can be
created in Palestine, there will be no permanent solution.
Palestinians should realize that, Jews have been living there since
3000 BC, and it is not possible to wipe them out from the face of the
earth. It's a form of insanity even to think of that possibility.

However, I would like to see that Israel revokes the Jewish State
status, which is discriminatory to all those Muslims living there.
This is a legitimate claim the Palestinians could raise. There should
not be any state based on religion, on the face of this earth. Here
you go, Mr. Ahmmadenazad.

[mukto-mona] Interview: Kashif ul-Huda of Twocircles.net (The Leading Indian Muslim News Website)

:

34 year-old Kashif ul-Huda runs Twocircles.net, the leading Indian Muslim news and features web site. In this interview with Yoginder Sikand he talks about his work and reflects on Indian Muslims and the media.

Q: What made you set up Twocircles.net? What was your source of inspiration?

A: I come from a working class family from Bihar. My father worked for one of the TATA companies in Jamshedpur. He was also involved in trade union activities, starting soon after the communal massacre in Jamshedpur in 1964. He was a major source of inspiration for me. From him I learned the need to work with the community but also that the 'Muslim-only' approach will not work, and that, instead, one needs to work with fellow Indian  irrespective of faith.

I graduated with a degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from the University of California, San Diego. I have been involved in pharmaceutical research since then. It was after moving to the United States in 1995 that I got introduced to the Internet, and I was fascinated by this new media. In 1997 I started a website for Urdu poetry, which later blossomed into Urdustan.com. This site continues to be the oldest Urdu website on the Internet.

After the genocidal attacks on Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, I felt that there was a desperate need to put all the information about Indian Muslims in one place. That led me to launch another website, IndianMuslims.info. I soon realized the need to bring Indian Muslim stories on a daily basis, and I didn't see anyone else doing it. So, in 2006, with a budget of $1200 that we estimated to be enough for 6 months, we started the news service. In 2007 the news division was spun off under the name of TwoCircles.net, which now brings out, free of cost and freely accessible on the Internet, daily news and features updates on issues related to the Indian Muslims.

Q: Why the name Twocircles? Why did you choose that name?

A: It is inspired by a quote from Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar, the great Indian Muslim freedom fighter. He once famously declared, 'I belong to two circles of equal size, but which are not concentric. One is India, and the other is the Muslim world'.

Q:  What do you feel have been the achievements of Twocircles.net so far? And what are the major challenges before you?

A: Our little effort is much appreciated by Indian Muslims because there was a pressing need for this sort of work. Our approach has been to take Indian Muslim-focused stories but to treat the subject in a very objective manner. Our approach in covering Indian Muslims news and issues has been positive as compared to the popular traditional approach of many Muslims of mere BJP/RSS/ Israel bashing. While the so-called 'mainstream' media reports about Muslims only when something bad happens—some Imrana sort of issue, fatwas on controversial topics or a terror attack—TwoCircles.net has been able to cover stories of common Muslims and their achievements and problems. We are also trying to inclusive in our approach by covering news from other marginalized sections such as women and Dalits.

I have experience of creating websites and writing for the Internet media for the last 10 years, so that helped us in creating a website that gives a unique, media-rich experience over the Internet. Our stories are enhanced by slideshows, audios and videos to give a truly multi-media experience to visitors of our site. This is, in some sense, unique and very few other Indian news website come close in that regard. So I am happy not only about the quality of our journalism but also about the delivery of our content.

Our major difficulty is of generating enough funds. Indian Muslims are a community of at least 150 million and they are spread all over India and so it is a challenge to get stories from each state. We don't have enough people on the ground to cover as widely as we would like to. We are also not able to reach to vast majority of Indian Muslims—only a tiny fraction of them are connected to the Internet. Further, we are aware that most of our reports and stories relate to north India, and that we need to give more attention to other parts of the country. We are trying to address this issue. Recently, we appointed a reporter in Mumbai for western India. In a few months, we hope to hire someone in south India to cover news from that region.

Q: What impact do you think Twocircles.net has made in influencing discourses on and debates about Indian Muslims?

A: A regular reader of Twocircles.net—whether Muslim or non-Muslim—will certainly be more informed about real Indian Muslim issues. He or she can easily sense that Aligarh Muslim University, Urdu, and Personal Laws are not the main topics of concern for the majority of Indian Muslims. He or she will also learn that there is immense diversity of language, culture, practices, and opinions among Indian Muslims.

We receive several thousand visitors on our site every day. There are a large number of journalists and opinion makers that watch us on a regular basis, so we hope that by reaching out to them they are able to see various sides and nuances of stories related to Indian Muslims.

Q: What do you have to say about the Indian Muslim media? Also, how do you look at the ways in the Indian so-called 'mainstream' media depicts Muslims?

A: I think the Urdu media in India has improved a lot in the last few years. However, the Indian Muslim media in English still remains lamentably very limited. It consists of just a very few magazines which, while they were a good idea ten or twenty years ago, have not kept pace with the time. Almost none of them do any field-based reporting, and most of them are simply a collection of opinion pieces. Furthermore, they simply react to the agenda set by the so-called 'mainstream' media. More than lack of money and training, it is the lack of vision that is hampering the growth of the Indian Muslim media.

As far as the so-called 'mainstream' media is concerned, there are indeed biases against Muslims and other marginalized communities, but I believe it has also to do with the nature of the corporate media. They are set up to maximize profits, so if they think a story is interesting or sensational and will sell well, they will broadcast or publish it without thinking too much about consequences or even checking facts. I don't think they are driven by hate against Muslims, but, yes, these journalists need to be educated about Islam and Muslims. Some of them may personally be prejudiced against Muslims under the influence of the Hindutva-Sangh ideology, but I believe that the majority of Indians are free of this prejudice.

Q: What you feel about how Indian Muslim organisations have sought to relate to or use the media to get their concerns and views across?

A: Most Indian Muslim organizations still use fax and write their press releases in Urdu. So, not surprisingly, their views never even reach most media houses. Some have set up what they call media cells, but, basically, their only or major function seems to be to disseminate information about their organization's activities. They also keep an eye on what media is reporting about Muslims and Islam, but, sadly, do little at all to seek to engage the media, whether by dialoguing with media persons, writing letters or organizing protests, if the need arises. So, I would say, these Muslim organizations have no well-planned media policy or even a basic understanding of how the modern media works.

I can't see any planned efforts being undertaken by Indian Muslim groups to develop and promote media relations. For that, they would first need to understand how the media functions and what the constraints and limitations it works under are. Only after that can they can start cultivating relationship with journalists. They need to understand that journalists are not going to be their enemy or friends or whatever—they are just doing their job and looking for stories. If you have compelling and interesting stories they would like to get an exclusive access to them. Even a simple letter writing campaign, if done in an organized and consistent way, can yield surprising results. Along with the national media, the local and vernacular press should also be part of any media policy of Muslim organisations.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Has Bangladesh become hell already?

Dear Ezajur bhai,

Mostly bangladesh is an indigenous nation. Language, culture almost same, yet its divergence in thinking pattern, if you look at with a positive mind set it is wonderful. From Tetulia to Teknaf what variation you see, except the dialect.
We have thinkers biased to AL, to BNP to JI. Also their linience towards India, Pakistan, USA, UK, MidleEast or China. Our literature is not strong with our culture yet it does touch upon most we think of. We did not produce anything of world class (in any measures) yet we are able to grasp with comtemporary issues all around the world.
We are poor, we are humble, yet critical and most of it comes from our poverty level and social denial which is artificial. Rat race to overcome this does create lot of comotion but that shows we are alive and able to fight.
Look at those arabs or european around you, what is common in them merely present in those 5 footer home folks you see on the street or market place. Have a broad look.
My apology if my understanding caused annoyance.

Dear Alochoks

Has Bangladesh become a hell already?

It has always been hell in at least the mildest sense of the word.

And BNP complaining about AL before even addressing their own issues
is just symptomatic of our CHORITHRO.

We should talk more about CHORITHRO and KASLOTH and SHOBAB.

But we are cowards.

And after I got involved in our organisational dynamics I understand
why we are cowards on this subject. And I understand why so many
good people just give up and turn away from caring.

EY DESHEH KUNU DEEN KICHU HOBEH.

Any idea how many good Bangladeshis think this?

[ALOCHONA] The damage India & LTTE have caused to Sri Lanka

The damage India & LTTE have caused to Sri Lanka

By Shenali Waduge

If we are confused as to why Sri Lanka was indiscriminately projected as suffering from "disunity", "ethnic rivalries" "genocide" there is only one answer to a proper understanding of the problem – India. "India's covert operation camouflaged a terrorist movement to promote ethnic tensions." To how many occurred the need to wonder how Sri Lanka can be categorized as a nation suffering from an "ethnic" problem when there is enough evidence to prove India's involvement in arming LTTE and other militants in Sri Lanka? The covert operation allowed India to take diplomatic leverage of the situation and advance the opportunity to advocate a "political solution" in the form of an Indo-Lanka Agreement and the 13th amendment to the Constitution that amalgamated the North and East to India's advantage and later to secretly author a Cease Fire Agreement brokered by Norway. Yet, despite all the political bullying Sri Lanka has undergone the nation & its people are still magnanimous enough to call India "our friend" and mean it too.

The hypocrisy of India's non-alignment comes in the examples that show India treating injured soldiers of the IPKF sent to Sri Lanka immediately following the signing of the Indo-Lanka Agreement in 1987 while simultaneously treating injured LTTE terrorists in Chennai (terrorists who were responsible for over 2000 IPKF deaths and scores of IPKF injuries) What explanation was given to the Indian public for the USD180million spent on the IPKF operation to Sri Lanka if it was nothing but a charade to cover the actual game plan in forging an amalgamation of the North and East as well as stuffing down the 13th amendment to Sri Lanka's Constitution for India to eventually have greater access to the port of Trincomalee.

We are well aware of the role played by the Indian intelligence agency – RAW in all of the happenings that took place and perhaps even taking place presently. It is upon the RAWs explicit advice that the Indian Government took actions on Sri Lanka….RAWs faux pas was to assume that the LTTE "our boys" would continue to tango to India's tune alone. Not surprisingly, the LTTE-Indian honeymoon did not last for too long and an exasperated Dixit even ordered the killing of Prabakaran which was turned down by General Sundarji – who initially claimed to require only 3 weeks to disarm the LTTE.
India may have thought Prabakaran and his team would remain a paid killer force but the LTTE had larger designs mooted by every political organization in Tamil Nadu, national or regional who secretly or rather openly carried a desire for a separate state for Tamil people. Sri Lanka's covert operation was actually a camouflage to sustain their larger program to realize this aspiration. If we are to give credit to India's intelligence agency – RAW for masterminding regional covert operations, we must assume that the RAW could not have been unaware of this secret desire for a separate homeland by Tamil Nadu leaders as well as Prabakaran.

Whether it was passed on to Indian Government authorities is another matter but obviously this aspect of the covert operation was overlooked or it may have been taken as a non-priority issue since India successfully crushed the We Tamil movement in the late 1960s. If the LTTE eliminated Rajiv Gandhi for not giving Eelam then the RAW must take equal responsibility for undermining the LTTE's actual designs. Similarly, we may also wonder whether the assassination of Rajiv Gandh was ordered by the LTTE leader himself or by "others" which certainly adds to the intrigue. Just as intriguing was the IPKF soldiers being killed by the LTTE in Sri Lanka and LTTE terrorists being given medical treatment and allowed to recuperate in Chennai as well as having courtesy calls by Tamil Nadu leaders. It is believed that the Indian polity are unaware of the underground dealings of their Governments of the past and present assisted by their intelligence operatives. India and its majority North-Indian Government may also not realize that many in the South feel dissatisfied with their share of Indian "democracy".

For all the treachery someone had to pay a supreme price and it was unfortunate that Rajiv Gandhi had to pay for the sins of his mother. The Jain Commission declared the LTTE the guilty party and its leader Prabakaran the 1st accused. Prabakaran remains on India's Most Wanted List.
While speaking of India's covert role in Sri Lanka, it is important to acknowledge that certain Tamil leaders in Sri Lanka espousing separatism under a "federal" cloak gave the green light to wage an armed struggle going so far as to urge Tamil youth to take up arms (Vaddukodai Resolution, 1976). It was in the backdrop of this that India's intelligence agencies would have thought of the plan to destabilize Sri Lanka. India's direct involvement with Sri Lanka's militant groups began in 1981 incidentally through Congress-led Governments – India's public was never privy to India's clandestine operations or strategies.

Yet, even despite the eminent downfall of the LTTE, leaders like Vaiko claim that the LTTE cannot be defeated. Let it not be forgotten that India has banned the LTTE but it is unusually surprising that India allows Tamil Nadu leaders to openly side & support even publicly speak for LTTE on Indian soil as well as lobby for the LTTE cause internationally.

If Sri Lanka is important by way of its geopolitical location it is not only India's intelligence agencies that eyes the country but all others – it is not for any love of the common people in Sri Lanka that country's come to fund development programs. China will soon enjoy the fruits of the Hambantota port, India is enjoying Trincomalee and soon many other players will come with vested interests as seen by their diplomatic jargon now changing from pro-LTTE to "development" and civilian rehabilitation – this perhaps will provide continued opportunities for those NGO/INGO heads and their local coteries who have earned well for their role in the misinformation campaign against Sri Lanka. Having tied the Government's hands by becoming prisoner to debts – it becomes an easy endeavor to obtain State approvals for "development" programs thus increasing their "foreign stake" in Sri Lanka….this will soon foresee imperialism in its modern form take root once more and requires for local entrepreneurs to be alert and fast track alternative growth that will remain local. 32 countries have banned the LTTE but funnily enough the LTTE has its foreign headquarters in London where its theoretician late Anton Balasingham was openly working for the LTTE.

One would have thought that India would have learnt from Rajiv Gandhi's murder – lessons in resorting to other means than covert operations by way of arming militants but India's hypocrisy became further accentuated following the disclosure of India's role in the Norwegian-brokered Ceasefire Agreement exactly 10 years after the Rajiv Gandhi assassination. Contrary to distancing itself from Sri Lanka, India was very much involved in the authoring of the Cease Fire Agreement though the bulk of Sri Lanka's objections were steered towards Norway and its facilitator Eric Solheim.

We are told that many secret meetings took place between India and Norway but are we to assume that the LTTE were unaware of such meetings? – we may presume that having lost faith in Chandrika Bandaranaike these external forces put faith in Ranil Wickremasinghe whose desire to rule Sri Lanka was no secret. The CFA was artfully timed – its signing took place within months of the 9/11 attack & the US "War on Terror" – it nullified any of Sri Lanka's efforts to corner the LTTE.

India even went so far as to moot a Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission – the first such international peace monitoring body outside the UN aegis made up of Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland) to oversee the ceasefire. They recorded over 3000 LTTE violations but nothing was ever done about them.

For peace happy Sri Lanka, the removal of barricades the opportunity to travel even to the North was all they could think of. Little did they wonder at what expense this jubilation came and exactly what the Agreement had carved out (everything was kept secret even from the President of Sri Lanka and Wickremasinghe's own cabinet) – territory to the LTTE, opportunity for them to procure arms, divulging names of Sri Lanka's intelligence services, disclosure of the deep-penetration units….all these soon led to a systematic program that allowed the LTTE to more or less function in a defacto State, eliminate intelligence officers one by one and prepare for Eelaam IV.

The Wickremasinghe Government's shortsightedness can be overlooked in understanding his protracted desire to become Sri Lanka's President, however it was expected that years of political leadership would have given him enough political wisdom to counter the clauses with those that would benefit Sri Lanka and its people, especially the security forces who eventually ended up cannon-fodder and mere guinea pigs in battle and humiliated by the LTTE. Eventually, like parrots Wickremasinghe and his cabinet sang full praises of the CFA and some of these very ministers surprisingly enough are with the present Government now doing the opposite.

If the CFA was an Indian ruse to which the LTTE was a party it showcased India's continued allegiance with a terrorist force and for all the lives lost thus far not only the LTTE but India must share moral responsibility. India's concerns have nothing to do with the Tamil people, they have nothing to do with peace, India is and has only been concerned with the desire to entrap its neighbors through artfully created domestic feuds so that India remains the dominating emperor to agree or veto any "friendly" forces that come to help and it is imperative that we do not forget at any point that there are no permanent friends but permanent interests and India's permanent interest is to ensure that Sri Lanka remains destable enough to eternally seek India's assistance.

To its advantage has been the Tamil Nadu factor which helped create the theme of "ethnic" tension and have the entire world label our ailment as that – it became easier by external players in the form of NGOs/INGOs whose sins are now coming to light with every area being liberated by the armed forces. Many of these NGOs must be shrinking with embarrassment as we see footage of their offices adorned with LTTE documents, LTTE portraits of leaders, and LTTE propaganda – a single school, a single house,....for the ordinary poor Tamils….none whatsoever. Those journalists who have continuously claimed not to have been allowed into the war zones, now being taken on military helicopters can see for themselves. Yet, reports being relayed have a common agenda – blaming the Government for all civilian injuries and quoting the Government on LTTE accusations – this has been the hallmark of most of the foreign media reporting on Sri Lanka thus far.

A UN spokesman in one of the daily newspaper reported that they are "unable to ascertain" the number of civilians being released – this seems rather odd, if they can't give the small number of casualties that they are treating how possibly can they quote civilians trapped as 400,000? But, we see u-turns too…The UK arresting LTTE heads, US too stepping up their anti-LTTE operations…. The army commander has been described as one of the best commanders in the world, the armed forces declared one of the finest in modern day and much of the successes has been by and large purely due to empowering and proper leadership and mastering the art of warfare …. How much a motivated armed force, an empowered military leadership and equipment to back plus a Government that refuses to cow down to pressures has shown and a defense secretary that has put all previous ones to shame.

The LTTE terrorist group was projected as being invisible, its leaders allowed to under the pretext of "ethnic liberation" conduct programs even in countries that had banned them. Even diplomatic appeals fell on deaf ears. The movement has now been shrunk down to size from 15,000 sq.km to now fighting to save less than 300sq.km. The world refused to see or put things in the real perspective.

Despite enough and more examples of LTTE atrocities it was allowed to procure arms, travel freely, collect money even a widowed Sonia Gandhi aligned with the very Chief Minister whose name came up in the Jain Commission report for close links with the LTTE and its leader accused for the assassination of her husband. Even now, the journeys that the Indian Foreign Minister, Indian Foreign Secretary make to Sri Lanka are purely as a result of the threats by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to withdraw support to the UPF Government and have nothing to do with the welfare of the Tamil people.

It makes some wonder at times when calculating the deaths of LTTE cadres whether some of these young men are actually mercenaries from Tamil Nadu & not Sri Lankan Tamils at all. How many have actually thought of this possibility since the Palk Strait is just 22 miles and we know very well of clandestine operations of smuggling that has taken place for centuries as well as how Velvititurai Tamils are famous for their dual lifestyles of which Prabakaran is just one of many non state players.

One of the puzzling scenarios has been Presidential election of 2005 where it is greatly believed that Prabakaran's decision to boycott the election allowed Rajapakse to come into power. It is common knowledge that Wickremasinghe carries a soft corner for the LTTE clearly seen in the manner he cared not to secure the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka, the reason why President Chandrika eventually took over – thus it is better to assume that the boycott was just the beginning of Prabakaran's downfall having held a country for over 25 years using brainwashed killer cadres.

Sri Lanka will be celebrating 61 years of Independence this year – almost half of this number is marked with bloodshed caused by an external force in the form of India and its creation in the form of the LTTE. The LTTE has killed 4400 civilians (from 1983 to date) alone to this list must include deaths of 27 foreigners. The first in May 1986 with the bombing of an Air Lanka Flight which killed 2 British, 2 Germans, 3 French, 2 Japanese, 1 Maldivian and 1 Pakistani & then the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991 killing 14 Indians.

In summary the damage both India and LTTE have caused is immense. For strategic geopolitical advantage Sri Lanka suffered greatly. Our forefathers will relish the times that both communities lived happily and without malice. Today, the continued misinformation of "ethnic" strife by foreign and some local media serve to only create and sustain divisions. The LTTE has been given a 48hour breather – its spokesman claims that the civilians amongst them desire not to enter Government controlled areas – if this be so, it leaves little choice for the armed forces and those who enjoy placating the Government and the armed forces over even a single death may well have to steer courage to blame the LTTE in the eventuality of what is likely to occur –but the LTTE cannot claim that they have not been given enough and more chances.

We do not require media coverage to see the amount of hope that prevails throughout the country – the sales of Lion flags alone suffices to say that Sri Lanka without the assistance of foreign consultants hope for firstly the complete elimination of the LTTE and to rebuild the 30 years of life that the LTTE and all those parties who benefited from the war selfishly enjoyed. Prabakaran is soon likely to join the thousands of others that he silenced & that will be trial enough.
