[ALOCHONA] New conspiracy against Bangladesh

New conspiracy against Bangladesh

Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury

Right after the mutiny by Bangladesh Riffles [BDR] troops, which is partially resolved by now only at its Head Quarters in Dhaka, some vested interest groups are becoming increasingly active in putting bad names on Bangladesh Army by saying, "they are corrupts, violators of rules and abusers of human rights". Such campaign is aimed at stopping the participation of Bangladesh Army in the United Nations Peace Keeping Force.

Some so-called intellectuals in Bangladesh are also joining their voice against Army and are trying to give justification to the heinous crime committed by the mutineer BDR troops.

Bangladeshi Economist Anu Muhammad saw the rebellion of BDR soldiers as a "class revolt though the cruelty in it was extreme".

"Discrimination was going on in the regimented forces for long and people had accepted it for sometime. But the situation began altering with the changes in society, as the soldiers in the forces were part of the society's subaltern section," he said.

Playwright and cultural activist, Mamunur Rashid said "it was the most shocking event for the nation. What the Bangladesh Rifles members have done is not right although it was clear that the repression by officers reached an intolerable level. But I think the government has to go deep into the matter that led the soldiers commit such cruelty."

My personal analysis is the statement by both Anu Mahmud and Mamunur Rashid are designed in indirectly justifying the criminal actions by the mutineer BDR troops.

In a television talk show, former military officer turned political leader General [Retired] C. R. Dutta said, "The BDR revolt is the outburst of their decade old accumulated anger."

Here again, General Dutta tried to defend the notoriety of BDR troops.

Meanwhile, public sentiment is growing increasingly against the killing and atrocity by the mutineer BDR troops. No grievances can justify a mutiny and killings by a disciplined force anywhere in the world and those who murdered officers at the BDR headquarters should be tried under the laws of the country.

The general sentiment of the people and defence personnel on Thursday turned strongly against the BDR mutineers as news and pictures of the brutal killings of army officers started to emerge in newspapers and on television channels. The bodies recovered from sewage system bore marks of utter brutality. The bodies were mutilated by gunshots and bayonet charges and ruthlessly dumped in the sewage system.

Commenting on Prime Minister's general amnesty to the mutineer troops, defense experts said, "It's globally common ethics not to support any mutiny or terrorist acts."

"If there are grievances, there are many other civilised ways to express that. If mutiny is justified, it would then simply welcome terrorism. While amnesty may be acceptable for the general mutineers considering that there could be more bloodshed otherwise, those who committed the murders should be tried under the laws of the land. They cannot be pardoned."

Commenting on the mutinee, some said, the way the killings took place surely indicates that there was a hardcore element, which wanted to give the mutiny a worse shape. The group, their relationship and linkage should be brought into light through proper and professional non-partisan investigations. The government should look into the fact seriously.

The rebellion by a section of soldiers against the officers at the Pilkhana head quarters of the Bangladesh Rifles in the capital Dhaka, which started Wednesday morning and continued late into Thursday afternoon, has put the country in a grave crisis. The members of the paramilitary BDR constantly guard our national borders in difficult situations while the members of the armed forces have been raised to defend our national territory as and when attacked; our nation-state badly needs these two forces to maintain healthy relations. After the revolt in BDR, entire bordering areas of Bangladesh are in extreme security lacking and there are reports of strengthening of security measures by our neighboring nations as well as deploying special commandos for unknown but assumable reason.

Now, let me point to a number of extremely important but very crucial issues, which the government needs to address forthwith.

When the notoriety inside BDR headquarters was continuing, although all the private television channels were covering the incident, state-owned Bangladesh Television was busy in broadcasting entertainment program, as if nothing happened in the country. Such senseless behavior of Bangladesh Television is not only a serious offense by its staffs but the information ministry itself. It may be mentioned here that the information secretary was just removed from his job only a week back for writing a notoriously abusive poem on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and members of his family. Bangladesh Television [BTV] is under the information ministry. Many believe that, BTV's roles might have been intentional to put the government into questioned position.

After dead bodies of army officers came out through the sewerage line at Kamrangirchar in Dhaka, their bodies were laid down on ground and members of law enforcing agencies called local people to load the bodies into trucks in a very dishonorable manner.. The law enforcing agencies should have used stretchers to honorably shift the bodies to the trucks. Secondly, none of the representatives of the government visited that spot right after recovery of the bodies. Bangladesh Television was again continuing its all entertainment and fun programs, thus not even showing a special scroll of condolence on its screen.

The BDR mutiny was not a mere instant incident. No way! It is very well planned and well organized notoriety, where many kingpins are involved from behind the scene. It was also reported that on the previous night of the mutiny, leaflets were distributed amongst the troops of BDR. They even collected the red and yellow color mask and bandana much ahead of it. So, they were absolutely prepared for the revolt and murder of 146 army officers, in a planned way to create a vacuum right within our armed forces. Moreover, some of the mutineer soldiers were terming the Prime Minister as "Amader Netri" [Our leader]. To a soldier, how the PM turns into a leader? Moreover, most of the mutineer troops were appearing before the mass media without any musk, while they knew, their faces will be seen by the television viewers and others concerned. Were they already sure of any general amnesty, much before any government delegation met them?

And, most interestingly, why the government decided to send Jahangir Kabir Nanak, MP and Mirza Azam, MP to Bangladesh Riffles headquarters as their first representative for negotiations? Why not any senior leader like Tofael Ahmed or Suranjit Sen Gupta. Or senior minister like Motia Chowdhury? Any special reason? Did these two leaders have some contact points already inside BDR?

Bangladesh government must make necessary arrangements for burial of the killed officers with due respect and honor. They should be accorded the honor of national heroes. Moreover, the government definitely should identify the entire conspiracy behind such brutality. There should also be proper investigation on the cases of rapes inside the BDR headquarters during 30-hour mutiny. And finally, the government should do everything in stopping anti-army propaganda inside and outside Bangladesh by various elements.

Armed forces are the guards of our sovereignty. They have been sacrificing lives since independence of this country. Many officers sacrificed their lives during the war of independence. Dignity and prestige of this institution should be upheld under any circumstance. There should not be any compromise in this regard!

[ALOCHONA] We Shall Prevail

We Shall Prevail

(To pass on a comment, kindly visit http://mukto-mona.com/wordpress/?p=185)

By Jahed Ahmed

"Why look sad, man? Cheer up!" said a Hispanic customer to a Bangladeshi candy shop owner near a Queens Subway station while buying some nuts. The owner replied in a broken voice, "Me feel no good today, Amigo. Enemies harmed my country. They made my people kill each other. No good, you know!" I stopped by the store to buy some gums and overheard the conversation. It was obvious what the shop owner was referring to. It's not just him, in fact, every expatriate Bangladeshi that I came across in last few days was upset for the painful experience that their beloved motherland has gone through lately—the systematic and pre-planned murder of several dozens of country's well trained army officers and civilians in the hands a few misguided member of the country's border security forces.

It's already an established likelihood that the tragic crime in the name of so called 'mutiny' has been the result of a long and organized planning. There may have been dissatisfaction and complaint on the part of the BDR jawans for issues such as low salary, limited benefits, yet considering the magnitude of the event, it is likely that the immediate killers were instigated and used by forces and elements that were off the spot. Although there have been floating myriad hypothesis' about real identity of the criminals—not an unusual phenomenon in the aftermath of such a tragic incident—preposterous assumptions and rumors must not divert our attention from the crucial objective of finding out the truth. As for the ongoing debate whether the government could have acted more efficiently to save the loss of lives, almost all Bangladeshis that I have spoken to in last few days hold this view that the government's approach may not have been the best, but the immediate military intervention could have made it even worse. For now, we should let the investigation committee to come up with their findings about the culprits in long distance and their actual motives. The last things our nation need now are shallow rhetoric, blame games and politicians pointing fingers at each others as usual. True that we do not yet know who the mastermind is behind the killings but we learned that a friend would not do such harm to us. Isn't it enough as a reason for us to unite and cooperate with each other so that such heinous crime could be averted in future?

"Amigo, we are no weak nation. We fought for our land, for our language." The expatriate Bangladeshi that I quoted in the beginning told his customer before ending the conversation. Like him, we, the patriotic people of Bangladesh, must make this assertion clear that Bangladesh was born, not to perish, but to prevail. The tragic loss of lives in the recent incident has made us sad for sure, but certainly not weak.

To see us weak, must have been the enemy's target; it's, certainly, not ours.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Pls listen carefully & take decision............

Asking help from others does not make any one less worthy as long as you can ask very specific help thats needed. As for doing it all ourselves, we have done that (very successfully!!) for the grenade attack on AL arresting culprits who acknowledged their active participation as per the advise of the then government, also we have successfully arrested people (who are under attack from certain political parties all the time) for the bomb attacks in the cinema halls -- I am not sure how many more vivid examples of political paddling you want to see (or may be you believed all those propaganda during that time). Lets get help from any efficient organization who can help us get to the bottom of this conspiracy (even if any one from the present government is involved in it). Lets make it a transparent one this time.

Again discussing weakness of our own country or asking for help (where needed) does not make us any less patriotic or weak. We need to know there is a problem before we can try to solve it (unlike some folks on this forum who gets to the solution first based on their biased political belief even before they can apprehend what the problem is).

Have enough strength in your patriotism to be courageous enough to discuss openly the problems of our country so we can resolve those problems.

Thanks,

Dear Ejaz - what are you talking about. You need to get a grip and hold your personal /prejudices & views on Hasina and Khaleda until this tragic event is played out.
There is a lot of disinformation floating around. Wild speculations from RAW to ISI, allegations of corruption, to everything but the kitchen sink.
It is is important that an elected govt & all future govts be allowed to serve out its term. You and I may not like dynastic politics  or these two women. But there is nothing we can do about it. they have been elected by the people in a fair election as vouched by impartial observers. I dont believe in the politics of assination or forced removal. The former because it is immoral and the latter because it unproductive and makes things worse.
I realize that Army''s emotions are naturally raw with such death and destruction. But they need to be prfessional and it is the responsibility of senor officers to calm their men. If they cant do it in times of crisis when are they going to do it.
I am glad Sahara is out of the commission of inquiry but to reconstitute it with Army people, the same people who are going to look for absconding mutineers and also participate in summary trials is not a good idea and is fraught with danger for the country in the long term. it is like making them Judge Jury and Executioner.
What we can do is insist on an impartial inquiry headed by people of unimpeachable reputation. if such people cannot found at home we can get them from abroad. Mary Robinson (Frmr UN Human rights Commissioner & President of Ireland) or Justice Goldstone of South Africa come to mind.
I hope we come to a peaceful and just end to this crisis.
We all need to do our bit!
Robin

[ALOCHONA] Re: Pls listen carefully & take decision............

Dear Alochok Robin

I had my moment. As far as the online world that is. I know you are right. Everyone does. But there is no free ride for anyone. Not even for the elected.

I know what prejudice is. One can be prejudiced for or prejudiced against. Those prejudiced for Hasina and Khaleda always get away with it. So write about them once a year at least. Then maybe I will write one piece less. They are the ones who need help.

I have more logic at my disposal than you might care to test.

Somethings need to be said. Part of the problem is that they are not said. And other people take advantage of it. I know my people as well as you do.

Have you been to AL and BNP meetings and seen how emotively they manipulate the poor and the weak? Lets talk about that? No?

They sent Nanak with a megaphone. You forgive them as you forgive a young child. For you have such low expectations - and it is your right to have them. I have high expectations - and it is my right to have them.

Here's a cookie..

If a Bengali wants to borrow money and says he'll return it in 3 months - he won't. If he says 2 months or 4 months you might get your money back. But if he says 3 months - its better to forget it.

Offended? More offended than Hasina sneeringly defending Sahara in the middle of volatile officers?

As a democrat you will settle for less for five years. So in the true spirit of democracy expect less from me for five years.

You are still right. But let me wallow in bu sh t for a while. Millions of Bangladeshi democrats do it all the time.

BDR Mutiny: Condolence and Questions

Shamim Chowdhury

Maryland, USA

The Bangladesh Rifles HQ rebellion that shook the nation was devastating and will have long chilling effect on the entire nation, especially, on countries two top tier national security operatives Bangladesh army and Bangladesh Rifles.

I pay my deep mark of homage for those civil and security personnel who died in this tragic incident and pray for quick recovery of those who suffered injury in this deadly brawl between two historically connected organizations.

I condemn all killings that took place on both side and sincerely hope Prime Minister Amnesty will not give comfort and immunity for the killers. To take flaming situation into its grip and control and let the tragic deadly event not rolling further, newly formed political government has taken the precise decision to declare general amnesty which covers those who took part with the rebellion probably for reasons beyond control or humanly frustration out of long deprivation but not in act of murder.

My hats off to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her cabinet and senior leaders of Bangladesh Awami League and its alliance. Prime Ministers sincere effort and magnificent statesmanship saved the nation from a deep crisis.

However the crisis is not over yet. Especially when human tragedy of this magnitude takes place there is always a chilling after effect. I appeal to government to keep their eyes and ears open and take measures to prevent any backlash that might follow the tragedy. It's been reported in the press that army is increasingly pressuring Bangladesh government to allow army personnel to go inside BDR head quarter after BDR surrendered their arms.

As one human tragedy is unfolding, another is in making. Right after the rebellion, army officer's family members were in desperate move to get information on displaced officer's fate. Now, similarly family members of thousands of BDR soldiers frantically are trying to locate their loved ones. The nervousness has been in the rise in last hour (BD time 11:30 AM, Feb 27th) after army troops and tanks deployed inside the BDR HQ.

Nation pray (as we find no one to trust among security personnel) this army deployment will not create another human heartbreaking tragedy. Reportedly army Chief Gen. Moeen went inside BDR HQ around noon time.

Now as the stress is little on the loose side we need to investigate why things went into rampage, who is responsible, why now and what will happen next. At some point the nation must come to a position and demand to have a comprehensive judicial inquiry not just on this particular mutiny but all defiance and rebellion that took place since the emancipation.

To stop this blood shed for once and all a white paper should be published letting the people know how many rebellion happened from 1972 to till this last one. How many officers and soldiers been killed, how many been executed after summary trial, number of injured, number been discharged. Most importantly who are those who worked behind the back drops of all these mutiny and benefited from?

Nation's nerve is worn-out and no longer accepts information black out in the name of national security. What security, when arms bought with our money is used to kill our elected presidents? Army which suppose to stay in cantonment will role out their tanks and armored vehicle into capital in short intermission to occupy the government pulpit.

People of Bangladesh has seen too much of blood shed in last 38 years. Mutiny among armed security forces are like monsoon which can not be avoided. Nature (climate) brings the monsoons down pouring rainfall, similarly the character of our armed forces mindset which derived from Pakistani repressive colonial mentality brings the down pouring of unavoidable blood shed repetitively. For the first time nation witnessed the spillover of that militant mentality of Bangladesh army contaminated BDR, question which one is next!

Regrettably, power hungry Bangladesh military brass never understood the backlash which can come beyond their imagination. History repeated itself again and again, nevertheless military leaders never ever took lesson out of repeating history. Bangladesh military personnel been used like condom for the benefit of generals and their stooges for too long time. For them, just like the rubber condom, human life also has no value after been used. Always killing was justified among Bangladesh army, killers was not just pardoned but rewarded. Gen. Zia and his top brass even illegally amended the sanctified constitution to protect the killers and awarded indemnity.

Bangladesh army as an institution did not bring single perpetrators to justice from its organization for committing heinous crime like murder in last 38 years if the person or persons murdered are civilian. Armed killers of Bangabandhu and his family, national leaders in jail and countless civilian politicians and their family members was pardoned and awarded with high position in foreign mission for their accomplishment which lead them into power. Today, the Frankenstein they created is hunting them down, whom to blame other then themselves!

Today when Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu in power as Prime Minister and their officers died in their own people's hand, tanks are rolling to empower investigation and prevent further escalation of violence, but when Bangabandhu died it was their tanks rolled to protect the killers. Probably this is the distinction between darkness and enlightens, truth and travesty

Bangladesh Army is under siege to some dangerously corrupt ambitious army officers.

I do not want to sound anti military being son of a military personnel, but can any one tell me how many good deeds Bangladesh military has exhibited comparing to their bed deeds since independence? Sometime one might wonder whether they are foe or friend to the people of Bangladesh or the country! This can not be tolerated any longer.

Especially in last two years, their top commander's criminal insensate mind did not have any compunction on building lavish golf courses and indulge into corruption in highest order when the people of the country had to go through severe food crisis. Their extravagant life style, palaces in DOHS, luxury cars and mind boggling corruption made people think negative about Bangladesh military as an organization. Instead of a place for patriots it turned into a den of scandalous general's hunting ground to get trophies.

Gen. Moeen U Ahmed is personally responsible for what happened in Dhaka, Pilkhana BDR headquarter. I have even doubt whether disgruntle DGFI had any role in it or not. Gen. Moeen U Ahmed should resign from his position of army chief immediately taking his sky high command failure. This man, Gen. Moeen U Ahmed compared Bangladesh politics with derailed train but never saw complete demolition of train that he is driving now and passenger since 1975

There should be a thorough judicial investigation on what happened not just in last couple of days but to unearth stories behind the stories. Unearth names and organization (there must be some one behind this) who is responsible for this heinous killing in BDR HQ. We can not accept that all these heinous killing happened just because of some disgruntles BDR personnel, NO NO, that can not be true. YES, mutiny happened and overwhelming ordinary BDR soldiers joined the mutiny out of sheer frustration over officer's brutality, injustice, corruption and disgraceful act. But murder and destruction in this scale can not be done by some leaderless disorganized BDR personnel. Some one must be behind this monumental crime, framed and financed the entire episode, who they are? What was their mission? Are they insider or outsider? Government must find out no matter what it takes for the sake of the nation and their stability.

Nation feel somewhat relieved, the mutiny is over and hope there will be no further escalation on any side. All threats will be removed and normalcy will return. Because of electronic media revolution, people of Bangladesh have witnessed unfolding stories as they were played out. Capital city was almost in close down mode

To prevent such painful death and destruction in future, government must enact an especial parliamentary committee which will review all military and civil security agencies service manual to remove any rules contrary to human dignity and rule of law.

Mindset of Bangladesh military officers must need to change to reflect that they are neither commanding a mercenary force nor outdated repressive colonial forces.

DGFI, NSI, Military Field Intelligence, Detective Brunch (DB Police), Special Brunch and all other civil intelligence agencies need to be restructuring from bottom up. BDR mutiny once again provides solid evidence on how disgracefully they failed this time likewise other dangerous time the nation went through since independence. These intelligence units, especially DGFI Political Wings scandalously put all of its energy, time and money against or in favor of political entity to satisfy military rulers since its creation on late seventies. Without any doubt, DGFI political wing is responsible for all undemocratic move and disfranchising institution of democracy in Bangladesh.

Parliament must enact and pass law disbanding political wing of military intelligence outfit DGFI and make sure this entity can not be misused against civil authority by ambitious generals in future.

All defense garrisons should be removed from the center of the city as soon as possible. Therefore, Dhaka Cantonment and BDR head quarter must be removed and resettled in reverse direction at least 50 miles away from the capital city.

May almighty save our nation from further escalation of tension and from dangerous guild of troublemaker who plays with the life of civilian and military personal indifferently.

Sincerely

Shamim Chowdhury

[ALOCHONA] Lies and Propaganda against the Army

People are spreading lies and propaganda against the brilliant Army of ours. Please read the following articles and may be it will make some sense to all those skeptical people about the true intention of these conspirators. I am not saying AL or BNP or any party is responsible. We will have to wait till the investigation is complete. But I am hopeful that the true report will come out and what ever it may be, the Army will punish them at any cost. In the mean time the politicians need to stop making politics out of these killed martyrs.

That's a really funny retort. Made me laugh in this dark times. Good to see that I am not the only one sick and tired of stupidity.

By now it is clear that the PM and the Home Minister knew clearly who the killers were.
They gave them thirty hours to leave the country. In this kind of crisis, an amnesty can be granted for 2/3 hours max when granting more time can help killers to do their job and that's what was done by giving them a full night to do their job in the dark. When the people were dying inside, the Home Minister was posing in the TV camera with the rebels, and ensuring the rebels full support.
The investigators are not going to get anyone, all the killers are gone - thirty hours is a long time, they had their first night sleep in Delhi by then.
In this situation, even in a less perfect democracy the PM with the team would have resigned. It is surprising that even the Home minister is still in the office. She needs to resign from the cabinet and the parliament. The other team members, Nanok, Azam, and the nephew should resign also. It is understandable now why such a poor team was sent.
Once the Home Minister and the other team members resign, they need to be in custody for their role in helping the rebels flee the country. Since the rebels are gone, the investigators can concentrate on interrogating Shahara Khatun and the team for the clue. Recently, some of the world class criminals such as Shamim Osman, Hazari and the Pistol Iqbal came back to Bangladesh. They including Mayor Mohiuddin can be interrogated  - you never know, the surprising facts can come out.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: Pls listen carefully & take decision............

Robin

[ALOCHONA] President Zillur Rahman

Dear Alochoks

Though he is ill President Zillur Rahman still managed to attend the National Parade Ground on 2/3/09.

As you can see he was not strong enough to stand.

Even the other day he did not refrain from trying to hold a crest.

His integrity is unquestioned and he is the appropriate symbol of our national integrity.

I wish him good health, long life and hope he can stand at national ceremonies very soon.

Regards

Ezajur Rahman

RE: [ALOCHONA] Who is behind the BDR massacre?

We all love conspiracy theories. Lets invent few more!!! Please please follow these golden rules before you express your opinion.

1. Is it based on fact, if not than explicitly mention that its your own opinion.

2. If it is fact, what is your source, you don't have compromise it, but question the reliability. If the source mentioned it as 'what he/she thinks' than it is his or her opinion not a fact.

3. Validate, validate, validate the information.

Otherwise it is just another rumor churning in the rumor mill.

Rana
