2 students killed, 1,000 hurt, 25 instts closed in 3 months
Siddiqur Rahman Khan New Age 2/4/09

Two student leaders were killed, more than 1,000 injured and about 25 educational institutions were closed over violent clashes by and within the associate bodies of students of major political parties after the Awami League-led alliance had won the December 29 general elections.
Abul Kalam Asad Rajib, the general secretary of the Dhaka Medical College unit Chhatra League which serviced out its tenure, was killed on Tuesday in a factional feud, and a leader of the Rajshahi University unit Chhatra Shibir, Sharifuzzaman Nomani, was killed by Chhatra League activists on March 13.
A tense situation also prevails in Jahangirnagar University even after the Awami League had suspended the organisational activities of the university unit Chhatra League over factional clashes.
Chhatra League activists, after the December 29, 2008 elections, reportedly engaged in violent clashes with their opponents both within the party and with rivals Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the BNP’s associate body of students, and the Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat-e-Islami’s associate body of students, to establish their dominance on campuses.
Apart from capturing the residential halls of some universities, the Chhatra League activists have reportedly unleashed a reign of terror in some colleges under the National University to make some money by using their influence to facilitate the students’ admission to bachelor’s courses in the 2008–2009 session.
The authorities of some such colleges were forced to stop the admission process for a few days as the Chhatra League activists vandalised the institutions and threatened further violence unless their illegal demands were met.
The academic life of several thousand students continues to be hampered as five educational institutions in Rajshahi have remained closed since March 13 and the authorities of Dhaka Medical College on Tuesday closed the institution for an indefinite period and the students had to vacate the hostels.
Three other institutions which were closed on March 13, however, were re-opened.
Out of the 25 educational institutions which were closed between early January and mid-March, 20 have resumed classes but five institutions in Rajshahi are still closed.
Some students who were seriously injured during the clashes are unable to take the exams and may lose an academic year.
The University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi Medical College and Rajshahi College were closed on March 13. Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, Rajshahi Government New Degree College, Government City College and Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute and the Institute of Health Technology were closed on March 14.
The Government New Degree College, Government City College and the Institute of Health Technology were reopened in the past week.
The situation in Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Eden College, Dhaka Polytechnic Institute and Government Brajamohan College in Barisal is still tense.
The authorities of Chittagong University and the Islamic University in Kushtia, apprehending deterioration in law and order, in mid-March imposed a ban on all political activities on the campus for a month.
On January 17, the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, summoned the Chhatra League president, Mahmud Hasan Ripon, and the general secretary, Mahfuzul Haider Roton, and asked them to take organisational action, including expulsion, against the activists involved in violence.
No significant action has been taken against any Chhatra League leaders or activists even after Hasina had issued the directive, said sources in the organisation.
When asked if any punitive measures have been taken, Mahmud Hasan Ripon on Wednesday told New Age they would take a tough stance against the Chhatra League activists who are involved in campus violence.
Ripon also requested the law enforcement agencies to take tough action against the students involved in violence.

[mukto-mona] FW: Life of Iranian President

Dear Mr.Solaiman>

Thanks for sharing the ideal of a good role model. We surely do appreciate and welcome this portrait. However, we are extremely skeptical! These Islamic Leaders start with Charity and endup the Monster the State cannot handle. Example; Hizbollah, Hamas, Talibaan, JMB, Herkatul Jihad, and the latest Model Islamic Charity Leader in Swat Pakistan--Mulla Baitullah Masud is wanted by US for 5 Million Dollar Bounty! I think you have conveniently forgotten--that great Slave of Allah and His Prophet--One Eyed Mulla Omar. He had nothing. He was in Taqwaa 20 hours a day. He lived the examplry life of his beloved Prophet. Actually these Slaves of Allah are taking over the Islamic countries one by one. Yesterday in Dhaka, Hizubur-Tehrir Leader has demanded a separate area in Bangladesh for the imposition of Sharia---Just like the Swat Model agreement in Pakistan. Now this is a grave threat to the Nation, Hasina, Khalida or Military for that matter. The Pakistani Army could not fight these Slaves of Allah. The Americans cannot fight. So, what is left? Those who can, are packing their bags and leaving the Islamic Model States for Kafirs Hell in the West.

The Life of Iranian President Ahmedinejad

cid:image001.jpg@01C98DD2.47A00DD0

The FoxNewsTV (USA) asked the Iranian President Ahmedinejad,

'When you look into the mirror in the morning what do you say to yourself'?

He answered: I see the person in the mirror and tell him 'Remember' you are no more than a small servant, ahead of you today is the heavy responsibility, and that is to serve the Iranian nation'.

Ahmedinejad, the Iranian President who astonished many when he first reached to the office of the Presidency by donating all the high valued Iranian carpets to one of the mosques in Tehran by replacing them with the low cost ordinary carpets. He observed that there was a huge extravagant lounge for receiving and welcoming the VIPs and he ordered it to be closed and asked the protocol office to arrange for an ordinary room only with wooden chairs.

On many instances he joins the cleaning staff of the municipality for cleaning the streets in the area where his home and the Presidency are located.

Under his authority whenever he appoints any minister to his post he gets a signed document from him with many points particularly highlighting that he shall remain poor and that his personal and his relatives accounts will be watched and the day he leaves the ministry shall be with dignity, and therefore it is not lawful for him or his relatives to take any advantage of his office. First of all he declared himself for all the 'Big' wealth and the property he owned was a Peugeot 504 car, model 1977, an old small house inherited from his father 40-years ago in one of the poorest zones in Tehran. His accounts with a zero balance and the only money comes in to his a/c was from his salary from the university as a lecturer with an amount of US$ 250 only.

For your information the President still lives in that same house. This is all what he owns; the president of one of the world's important countries; strategically, economically, politically and with regard to its oil and defense. He even doesn't take his personal salary with the argument that all the wealth belongs to the nation and he is the safeguard over it.
One of the things that impressed the staff at the presidency is the bag the President brings with him every day, which contains his breakfast; some sandwiches or bread with olive oil and cheese prepared by his wife and eats and enjoys it with all happiness.

One of the other things he changed was his personal carrier 'the President's Aircraft' to a cargo aircraft in order to save the spending from the public treasury and he ordered that he will be flying with the ordinary airline in the economy class.. He organizes meetings every now and then with all the ministers to know their activities and efficiency and he closed down the office of the Manager of the president and any minister can enter to his office without any permission. He also stopped the welcome ceremonies like the red carpet, the photo session or any personal advertisement or respect of any kind while visiting any place in the country.

Whenever he has to stay in any of the hotels he asks them to make sure not to give him a room with any big bed because he doesn't like to sleep on beds but rather likes to sleep on the floor on a simple mattress with a blanket.

Refer to some of the photographs which also confirm the above. The Iranian president is sleeping in the guest room of his house after getting away from his special guards who follow him wherever he goes and photo is taken by his small brother according to the Wifaq Newspaper which published this photo and the next day the photo was published in most of the world's newspapers and magazines and particularly the Americans. During the prayer you can see that he is not sitting in the first row. And the final photo is of his dining room where the president is busy eating his simple meal.

[mukto-mona] Editor silenced, protest erupts in Assam

SAN-Feature Service

SOUTH ASIAN NEWS-FEATURE SERVICE

April 2,2009

Editor silenced, protest erupts in Assam

Nava Thakuria

Most of the Assamese dailies were published with blank editorials on March 26 as a mark of protest against the gruesome assassination.

SAN-Feature Service: Protest against the killing of an editor in Assam of Northeast India continues, as the journalist community declared a series of protest and demonstrations. A protest meet at the cremation ground itself appealed all the media persons of the State to get united and participate in the program demanding punishment to the culprits and compensation to the family of the editor.

Anil Majumder, an executive editor of an Assamese daily 'Aji' was

shot dead on the night of March 24 in front his residence at Rajgarh locality of Guwahati. The killers were waiting for the young editor to return from the office and soon after the assassination at around 10 pm, they fled. Hailed from Nalbari district, Majumder, 39, left behind his wife and two daughters.

The killing of Majumder has brought many issues to the public forum.. He was a brave journalist but allegedly often ended up in biased reporting. He was prolific, but most of the time, he might got used by somebody else. From a local media correspondent in Nalbari, Majumder owned a daily newspaper in Guwahati, which shows his extra-ordinary zeal and hard labour for achieving success. But on the way, he grew enemies

from different sections in the society including the media fraternity.

Who may be behind the killing of the editor, is yet to come to light. Three hypothesizes have been discussed in various media and public forums. First, as usual, the government agency was involved in the killing. Secondly, the militant out might have targeted him. Though both the theories can not claim much ground, as the government was not

uncomfortable to the editor and it would hardly want this kind development prior to the polls scheduled in the next month. More over, the daily enjoyed neither high circulation nor support of influential readers.

Similarly, an armed group (United Liberation Front of Asom) leader denied their involvement in the killing of Majumder. He was understood as being closed to the outfit, for which Majumder was even arrested earlier. The police even suspect that he was involved with the militants for many 'non-journalistic' activities.

The last theory that is gaining momentum that Majumder falls prey to personal vendetta. The editor was in dispute with a Guwahati based rich business man. The conflict between Majumder and the business man ended up in a court case, which is still pending.

The Journalists' Action Committee, an umbrella organization of media bodies of the State issued an ultimatum to the government to nab the killer within a week. The committee also submitted a memorandum to the State chief minister Tarun Gogoi urging him to take prompt actions.

Earlier most of the Assamese dailies were published with blank editorials on March 26 as a mark of protest against the gruesome assassination. It was decided during the protest meet at the cremation  ground on Wednesday where hundreds editor-journalists attended the meeting and expressed anguish at the failure of the authority to ensure protection to the media persons in the State.

The voice of protest has been raised a number of media bodies, students organizations, civil society and advocacy groups with political organizations in Assam. The Editors Guild of India asserted that the 'brutal killing of Mazumdar exposes the failure of the government to provide  security to editors'. The Guild demands  an intensive investigation  into the murder of Mazumdar and also calls upon the government, civil society and media establishment to provide foolproof security to journalists and editors.

It also expressed its deep apprehensions about the safety of editors and journalists in Assam as many of them function under the shadow of threats. "Journalists and editors in Assam are pressurized by  terrorist groups and sometimes by governmental agencies to write  in favour of one group or other. Despite the threats editors and journalists have performed  their duties," said the Guild president Rajdeep Sardesai.

The Brussels based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) expressed shock at the murder of Majumder and conveyed its condolences to his family members.

"Once again, since the murder of Jagajit Saikia last November, we are reminded of the unsettled and positively hazardous conditions under which journalists work in the Indian state of Assam," IFJ Asia-Pacific director Jacqueline Park said adding that the local authorities in Assam must go the extra mile to ensure the safety of journalists in the State.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters sans Frontiers (RSF) expressed shock and grief at the murder of Majumder. In a statement, issued from New York, the CPJ's executive director Joel Simon  conveyed condolence to Majumder's  family and colleagues saying, "Police in Assam must investigate the motive for this killing immediately and reassure the local media community that journalists will not continue to be murdered with impunity."

Similarly, the RSF in a statement said, "The situation of journalists working in this region is of great concern. They often pay dearly for refusing to docilely relay the propaganda put out by the various parties to the conflict." The Paris based media rights body ended urging the government 'to do everything possible to determine the motives of this murder and identify and arrest those responsible'.

The chief minister Gogoi  condemned the killing and directed the State police chief GM Srivastava to take necessary actions to arrest the culprits at the earliest. Gogoi during his visit to  the family of Majumder to pay his condolence parroted, "It is the duty of the government to provide protection to everybody, particularly to journalists, and necessary steps will be taken."

Amazingly, Chandan Bagchi, a senor Indian National Congress leader after attending the funeral of Majumder, committed that he would carry the voice of resentment of journalists to their high command (read UPA chief Sonia Gandhi) and insisted that the killers should be brought under the law within three days. However, the police failed to nab the killers in the stipulated time period.

But there is other point of view as well. Media persons (including the proprietors) are vulnerable to various elements not only because of the conflict situation, but also for economic reasons. They have to perform their deities under tremendous work load but with low return in terms of salary and other legitimate facilities in Northeast India.

The region, surrounded by Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet (China), Burma and Bangladesh has witnessed a media boom in the last decade, but the journalists continued to be the victim of exploitation by their respective employers. Many times, the low patronage from the management put them in most vulnerable situation. --SAN-Feature Service

Re: [mukto-mona] Lessons from Pakistan on how the BD Govt should have responded to the BDR Mutiny

       Munshi should leave for Pakistan.

On Tue, Mar 31, 2009 at 2:17 PM, <"M.B.I. Munshi"> wrote:

There are many similarities in the terrorist attack on the police training academy in Pakistan and the BDR mutiny in Dhaka. Apparently there were 14-25 gunmen who entered the training compound and opened fire on cadets and police officers who were taken completely by surprise. The gunmen were heavily armed and committed to their task and their objective was to kill as many people as possible. The similarity between this attack in Pakistan and the BDR mutiny, however, ends there. The manner in which the Pakistan security forces promptly dealt with the threat was both efficient and utterly ruthless. The following is a short description of what happened –

"Black-clad Pakistani commandos overpowered a group of militants who had seized a police academy, took cadets hostage and killed at least six of them Monday in a dramatic challenge to the civilian government that faces U.S. pressure to defeat Islamic extremists.

The security forces stormed the compound on the outskirts of Lahore to end the eight-hour siege by the grenade-throwing gunmen, with three militants blowing themselves up and authorities arresting four, officials said. At least three other unidentified bodies were recovered." (AP - 12 die in bloody siege at Pakistan police academy (March 31, 2009)

If a bunch of commandos could achieve this in circumstances very similar to what occurred in Pilkhana then imagine the effect 2 dozen tanks and 6000 army soldiers would have had on the morale of the BDR mutineers. When the Bangladesh armed forces were not permitted to do what they were trained to do the mutineers gained confidence and commenced on their killing spree (as the photos now appearing on the internet from the very start of the mutiny seems to suggest). In light of the Pakistan security services response to the police academy terrorist attack and the outcome there it clearly puts the claims by the Bangladesh government that more lives would have been put at risk had a more aggressive posture been taken by the armed forces seems doubtful and extremely suspicious. (What the AL government is now doing in the name of investigations into the Pilkhana massacre can only be described as political repression and victimization of opposition party members and this may also eventually include anyone else critical of this administration.)

Another interesting aside to the Pakistan incident is the criticisms made of the Zardari government by Ahmed Quraishi which is also equally relevant to the Hasina government and the official statements being made on the BDR mutiny by some high-profile ministers -

Is Rehman Malik Blaming ISI For Lahore Attack?

Ahmed Quraishi

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—A second Mumbai-style attack in Lahore in less than a month, both targeting Lahore, a city that has traditionally bore the brunt of Indian-inspired terrorism inside Pakistan.

The level of training of these people and the choice of targets leaves little doubt that someone is trying to teach Pakistan a lesson. It is baffling to see Interior Advisor Rehman Malik so eager to quickly pin the blame on groups such as Lashkar Tayyeba or Lashkar Jhangvi that were active in the Kashmir freedom struggle in the past and are dormant now. Accusing these groups is an indirect swipe at the Pakistani security and intelligence agencies that implemented State policy in the past of supporting the freedom fighters inside the disputed territory with India.

Why is Mr. Malik not willing to consider the possibilty of Indian involvement? Is he afraid of upsetting the Brits or the Americans? He knows more than anyone else that we have conclusive evidence of Indian involvement in terrorism in Balochistan and the tribal belt. Unfortunately, Pakistani media projection is not as strong as the propaganda of the American and the British media that supresses these facts. Pakistan has shared this information at the highest levels with the Americans, who continue to protect the Indians in Afghanistan because of long term strategic interest.

Additionally, where are those local agents of Indian intelligence that were arrested from various Pakistani cities in the past few weeks and months near both the Indian and the Afghan borders? Why are we scared of bringing these people out? Please cut through the thick propaganda smokescreen of the biased Anglo-American media and let the world and the peaceful Indian public opinion also know about the activities of their security agencies.

There is no question that terrorists involved in the attack will eventually turn out to be Pakistanis. No foreign-induced covert terrorist operation can succeed without local elements. The only country other than the United States that has an elaborate, Pakistan-focused intelligence setup in Afghanistan is India. The Indians are actively using the chaos in Afghanistan to create a wedge between the U.S. and Pakistan by indirectly supporting terrorist elements. This is one level of the covert war in the region. The second element is the suspicion that the U.S. is supporting the insurgencies inside Pakistan either directly or through the Indians and possibly other players.

Since we are unable to make our concerns heard throughout the world because of the bias and the choking grip of the American and British media, the only other way to highlight the nefarious and terrorism-abetting activities of Indian security and intelligence agencies is by cutting off rail, air, and road links with India, including denying Indian airlines the right to use Pakistan airspace and denying Indian overland trade to Central Asia pending the investigations and a review by Pakistan of Indian activities inside and around Pakistan.

This is also the time to neutralize elements in the Pakistani government such as President Zardari and Mr. Rehman Malik whose assets, lives and apparently loyalties lie outside Pakistan. Democracy cannot be allowed to become a trojan horse for foreign powers to meddle in Pakistan.

Take action on India, Mr. Malik.

[ALOCHONA] Chatra League again, and a bleak future of Bangladesh?

Nayymul Karim:

What are you smoking lately?

Even scooping the power and killing innocent students by AL supported Chattra League is also fault of Jamaat? So, killing 7 students in Rajshahi University, ransack in JU, Dhaka Medical college, all act of India supported RAW & BAL. India definitely wanted Bangladesh as a failed state. And Hasina will definitely fulfil that dream.

The principal reason Hasina did not allow Army to strom BDR mutiny is to let more bloodshed of our talented officers. She is defintely incompetent to run any country. So did her father, our beloved Seikh Mujib. Seikh family knows how to play politics, but, what they never learn, how to do good governance. Hasina failed to realize that, success in street politics does not equate a good Prime Minister. Mujib legacy was nothing but failure, Hasina's legacy is also tainted by corruption & incompetancy. Awami League never did anything right when they are in power! They don't seem to understand the difference between playing politics and loving your own country.

While Hasina is in opposition, she nackedly blamed Bangladesh as a taliban-state, while she was in a foreign soil. She loves power, but NOT the country of Bangladesh.  After 911, many Bangladeshi in foreign soil were victimized due to Hasina's insensitive statement towards Bangladesh. Thats an act of treason!

Chattra Legue are in a rampage, they want to evict everyone except BAL-lovers. Hasina wants quota for AL-supporters in every institution in Bangladesh. She is the most corrupt politician ever!

I understand people love Awami League, because AL was at the forefront during liberation. But, we need to get beyond liberation war, we need to think about the future of Bangladesh. 50% of the population is below 25 years old. What Bangladesh need now, not the chant of cheap slogan, but more jobs and better education.

With the help of Indian agents & Chattra league, Awami League destroying the every educational institute in Bangladesh. Same as Sri Lanka, who fought LTTE for 25 years, supported by India, destroyed the country. India is doing same with Pakistan, and Bangladesh is following the same fate! You should see the sign is written on the wall! BDR mutiny, student unrest, garments industry, sabotage in political system with 'war crime' chant is just the prelude! You can see the markets in Bangladesh flooded with Indian sarees, Indian cars polluting street of Bangladesh, Indian workers are working in our Garments industry. Soon you will see Bangladeshi beggers in Kolkatta, Bangladeshi muslim girls are selling in the LalBazar of India.

Though India have 120 million muslims inhibitants, except few Khans in Bollywood, 90% muslims can not get qualified jobs. Muslims are greatly marginalized, and living in poor condition. Taslima maybe cazoling with Dadas in West Bengal, and India preach as the biggest democracy in the world, the true fact is: India is a country of Brahimns, a country of castes, where Muslims are treated as untouchable. I have a very first-hand experience while I was touring India. People need to speak facts!

Just pause, and think for a moment. is that what you want?

We are loosing, no matter who is in power, BNP, AL, my country is in great despair! And I can not even imagine Jamaat will ever be in power any time soon! I do not want to see Taliban-country, neither I like to see Indianization of Bangladesh.

We need to think betond partisan politics. Stop the blood bath, stop the unrest, it does no good to anyone. With 95% muslim inhibitant, Bangladesh can never be  secular. But, we can be a progressive democracy.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Lessons from Pakistan on how the Bangladesh Government should have responded to

We have to prove just one thing to make all the right-wing stories credible. Just one thing.  Since Taliban was solely created by Pakistani Intelligence Service (ISI) and elements of Pakistani Army, and they also aided Al Qaeda, to blame India for all the terrorism related incidents in Pakistan, we need only to prove that ISI, Pakistan Army and even their government actually work for India.  Even in the Bangladeshi cases, if we can prove that the BNP MPs and ministers who sponsored the jongis work for India, all these right-wing stories will start making sense.  Let us make their (the right-wing story-tellers in Bangladesh and Pakistan) job easier - please write stories (or facts or whatever) to prove this one thing instead of wasting time writing too many long stories which really make us sleep (or skip).
