I thought Trueman justified that bombing was necessary to shorten the war and reduce human tragedies, Your are right, there was more than meet the eyes. To give message message to Stalin , bombing large civilian in another country is really cruel and too naive that I would have expect from Stalin. I would have exploded in remote area a ocean to do the same job.

USA is lot different country because of great General Eisenhower. He first alerted general population that military adventure are unpatriotic and unnecessary. His going away speech at WH is beginning of true modern US military policy. There is still ways to go but I am hopeful.

Read carefully what I wrote. I do not justify bombing Japan with atomic bombs. Dropping bombs was planned to make Russians think twice before exporting and expanding communism to other countries. Since Japan caused a huge havoc at Pearl Harbor, American military generals were more eager to drop the bombs on Japan as a retribution. Yes, it was totally unnecessary.

Worth watching this recent TV serial if you love to know the history and drama of making the bomb.

Rightly or wrongly, US bombed Japan to show the Russians... not to mess with the new emerging US. US is a bad guy but many Abedins love to draw their social security/ food stamps and welfare checks from this big Mamma too. Do not be a hypocrite! Tame your ISIL brothers and sisters than portraying US as the one big monster . It is the nature of beast. Watch China to take over the whole China sea.

The U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey group, assigned by President Truman to study the air attacks on Japan, produced a report in July of 1946 that concluded (52-56):

Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey's opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945 and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.
General ( and later president) Dwight Eisenhower – then Supreme Commander of all Allied Forces, and the officer who created most of America's WWII military plans for Europe and Japan – said:

The Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing.

Eisenhower also noted (pg. 380):

In [July] 1945… Secretary of War Stimson, visiting my headquarters in Germany, informed me that our government was preparing to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. I was one of those who felt that there were a number of cogent reasons to question the wisdom of such an act. …the Secretary, upon giving me the news of the successful bomb test in New Mexico, and of the plan for using it, asked for my reaction, apparently expecting a vigorous assent."
