উর্ধতন সামরিক কর্মকর্তাদের মধ্যে বোধ হয় জিয়াই প্রথম বাংলায় শুধু "জিয়া" লিখে স্বাক্ষর শুরু করেন।
সত্তর দশকের শেষ দিকে জিয়া সৌদি আরব আসেন। সেখানে জেদ্দার বাঙালি নেতৃবৃন্দ, যার অধিকাংশই ছিলেন উচ্চ শিক্ষিত প্রফেসর টাইপ লোক, তাঁকে একটি অভিনন্দন দেন। ইংরাজীতে লেখা অভিনন্দন পড়ার শুরুতেই প্রেসিডেন্ট বলে উঠলেন, বাংলায় বলুন। ডক্টর (প্রফেসর ) শামসুল আলম ( মেকানিক্যাল ইঞ্জিনিয়ার ) মুশকিলে পড়ে গেলেন, কিন্তু সামলিয়ে নিলেন। প্রতি ইংরাজী লাইনের দিকে তাকিয়ে তিনি তা বাংলায় বলে শেষ করলেন।
আরেকটি কথা। জিয়া বাংলা লিখতে পড়তে না পারলেও, ইংরেজী নিশ্চই পারতেন। ইংরেজীতে না লিখে তিনি উর্দুতে লিখতে যাবেন কেন ? তাঁর উর্দু কী ইংরেজির চাইতেও ভালো ছিল ? তাছাড়া, সুভাষ সিংহর প্রমাণটি কি ? তার টক্ শো শুনলে ধরে নিতে হবে যে তিনিই একমাত্র অথরিটি, বিশেষ করে শেখ মুজিব এবং আওয়ামী লীগের ব্যাপারে।

সিংহ হও আর রাম ছাগল হও, তাতে কিছু আসবেনা। জিয়ারা যখন করাচি তে যায়, তখন বাংলা মাধ্যমের কোনো শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান ছিলোনা করাচিতে। জিয়া সহ তাঁর বড় ভাইয়েরা ইংলিশ মাধ্যমে পড়াশুনা করেছে। ইংলিশ স্কুলে আবার সহজ উর্দু নামের একটা বিষয় পোড়ানো হতো। ওর ছোট ভাই কামাল (এসএসসি) 1962, বাংলা মাধ্যমে পড়াশুনা করেছে কারণ বাংলা স্কুল চালু হয়ে গিয়েছিলো। আমি বাংলা মাধ্যমে পড়াশুনা একই স্কুলে করেছি, যেখানে কামাল পড়েছেন। আমাদের ও একটি বিষয় ছিলো সহজ উর্দু। ঢাকার মতিঝিল এ উর্দু মাধ্যমের যে স্কুল ছিলো তাতেও সহজ বাংলা পোড়ানো হতো।To know Bangla is a plus for all of us. He had more than enough of that.তোমাদের গায়ে আর একটু জ্বালা ধরিয়ে দেই। আমরা ওদের মহল্লাতে থাকতাম। 1958 সালে ওদের বাসায় দেখেছি উর্দুতে কথা বলতে. any problem? শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দি ও বাংলা বলতে পারতেন না উর্দু বলতেন। তোমাদের বাবা মুজিব ওনার সাথে উর্দুতেই কথা বলতেন বুঝলে?
