[mukto-mona] Re: There is no freedom of expression

Subject: There is no freedom of expression

In Bangladesh, freedom of expression and democratic tolerance have been drastically curtailed, in many cases, down to zero. As many as two scores of electronic and print media outlets, considered neutral to not so sympathetic to the AL regime, have been shut down for not being blindly and entirely loyal to it. The free and democratic Western world is daily splashed with countless critical and comical TV shows, satirical cartoon pictures, distorted and disfigured sketches of presidents and prime ministers, and sour and bitter Facebook and Twitter comments going viral with the critics, commentators, and comedians mocking their political leaders, sometimes even posting racist and hateful visuals about them.[1] The way Trump has attacked others in a dark and dangerous, and mean and pessimistic manner and the way he was being attacked in return by others as a joke, jerk, fraud, conman, misogynist, sinner, sadist, loud mouth dick, pathological liar, huckster, pied piper, showman and hypocritical demagogue are good examples (though in a negative way) of the freedom of expression and democratic tolerance in the USA.

However, in the culture of chokehold suppression in Bangladesh, Jahangirnagar University Professor Ruhul Amin Khandoker was deprived of his minimum right to free speech. He was jailed for three years for a tiny comment that "Everybody dies but why not Sheikh Hasina?"—a short and simple and inconsequential comment that cost him dearly, including his job too. Many young men have been most unjustly locked up behind bars and continue to be, as it happens in a fascist environment, for their fun and freedom of posting various kinds of pictures of Sheikh Hasina, including some distorted and disfigured, yet creative and expressive ones. She is not a royal like Emperor Akihito of Japan or Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain that she cannot be criticized through artistic sketches and expressions. In fact, even emperors like Napoleon used to be a common and constant target of criticism through satirical drawings and caricatures by famous artists of the time. Opposition student leaders are being beaten up for their free speech.[2] The New York-based Awami supporters demanded punishment for the octogenarian Shafik Rehman, a noted writer and journalist, already in prison for charges he denies, for merely sharing a small Russian anecdote, which they thought was indirectly hinting at the death of their leader Hasina.

[1]  Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have been likened to gorillas, monkeys and chimpanzees. For deporting about two million illegal immigrants, Obama, America's Commander-in-Chief, has been called "Deporter-in-Chief" by a journalist in a face-to-face interview.
