My Brother Answers the Door

No, Shahid is not at home.
This time at sunset no one ever finds him at home,
No one ever will.

He’s not much of a Nature-lover.
Would’ve been a good thing if he were.
His eye affliction could have been cured
by the greenery of the foliage.

It is the midnight front-door knocker
that gets noisily shaken by his rough fingers
(like bad news, like an Emergency)
that wakes me up from my half dreams
into full nightmares, and it gets followed up
by his crying out, desolate, as if wounded,
“Brother! Hey brother!”

I recall that time in Darjeeling ,
a dangerous slippery roadway,
a despondent stranger had called out like that.
And he kept shouting for help until he slipped
and fell a thousand feet below.

I open the door with trepidation –
that’s the only time I get to see him – past midnight.
No idea where he’d been, what he’d been up to,
or how he spends his days.
He can’t hold down a job, he’s red-eyed all the time,
and flies a pretentious flag of mourning
in his unkempt locks of hair.

Enough! No more talk of him!
He’s been out since morning.
No, Shahid Quadri is not at home.
