Straight Talk
NCC Election — People Have Spoken
Abdul Mannan
Amidst determined stand of Sk.Hasina the national elections were held on 5 January, 2014 and as expected, her party, the Awami League won the majority seats to form the government for the second successive term. Many analysts commented that by not contesting the election BNP has committed a fatal mistake. The NCC election perhaps is a testimony to prove that the analysts were right. Incidentally though BNP did not take part in the national election it participated in many of the succeeding local body elections and won in many of them. In the case of Narayanganj too it participated in the City Corporation election but kept out of District Council election. Often the political decision made by a party like BNP defeats all reasons, rationale and logic and enforces the belief that the party is full of leaders but no politicians. >.

www.daily-sun.com The much talked over Narayanganj City Corporation Election to elect the City Mayor and 36 councillors is over and the people have or rather the voters have spoken, loud and clear. The voice of people is the voice of God. They have elected the immediate past Mayor, Awami League nominated candidate, Selina |

It was not a competition between the candidates
but rather competition between the parties when the country
is gripped by the BAKSAL dictatorship. Hence the
'better candidate' logic does not apply here. So,
the question is why BNP lost the election and whatever
happened to the 'Gono-Jowar'?
The election results were
manipulated & rigged in both the local centers and in
the election centers. That's what happens in any
dictatorship or one-party system. It takes a HUGE
participation and revolution like people's involvement
to topple a rigged system that even when they rig/steal the
sheer volumes of pro-democracy people will wash away those
manipulated numbers.
2) The 'Gono-jowar' never
happened as evident by the low participation. There are a
few reasons it never happened. a)
The Godfathers of Narayongonjs and Shontrashi Awamilig have
kept the political culture very scared with continuous
threats, arrest and violence for any common middle class
to take interests in the poll. The constant threats, arrest,
cases behind the scene to political leaders have taken the
activists out and made it a low participation, ruling
party controlled environment. The common people do not
participate in fearful and dangerous
context. b) BNP has failed to
campaign fully as most of the media are govt controlled
and most coverages are given to Shamim Osman (the Godfather
and Toki murderer ) and Ivy. c) BNP has
failed to and chose not to make the election as a national
campaign , they had no message of change, no message of
restoring democracy against the dictatorship, no message
against the Goom-Khun culture, no message of selling out
country to India and betraying our liberation war values, no
messages against Awamileague's anti-Islamism . They
thought fielding a candidate automatically will over throw
the deeply trenched BAKSALI one-party-police-state by
itself without doing any ground work to galvanize the
people.
d) BNP's
Khaleda did not campaign. A few Central leaders did just one
or two face saving shows. It was not a all out effort,
because BNP did not think it needed to be a all out effort.
Narayongong Mayorship was not that much important cause to
sacrifice the bigger picture of national cause (national
election ).
e) BNP
lacked as usual competent leaders and adequate number of
leaders as most are either too old, imprisoned, compromised
for them to launch vigorous campaign with strong national
messages against the BAKSALI dictatorship.
BNP has failed to realize that it
takes local wins and build up to build national campaign. It
takes continuous messaging, continuous campaigning ,
continuous involvement from TOP leader to all central
leaders.
Khaleda Zia comes down to streets
only to go to the BAKSALI-Awami-Vondo trials/courts but
she cannot come to street or visit on the ground for
campaigning, for building and connecting with grass roots,
for Andolon, for march to Rampal, for building councils
etc. If the top leader is missing in action, why would
her deputies or people to be dedicated ?

BNP has been devastatingly defeated in the
N'Ganj election mainly because of its extremely weak
candidate who pales n fades beside the well-known, clean and
charismatic Ivy. Advocate Sakhawat H cannot not even talk
well. How can he do his legal advocacy at the court? He is
full of stumbles. He has no fluency, no warmth, no
enthusiasm. During the campaign of the last couple of weeks,
the slow n dull speaking Sakhawat was seen to be walking
like a funny and pathetic Don Quixote without engaging with
the voters through eye contact and forceful and winning
verbal communication. Advocate Taimur Alam K would have been
a much better and worthy candidate, or the other guy,
N'Ganj BNP GS. Shame on the BNP.
