To:  Abul Basher Khan - Bangladesh
From: Mohammad Ali (Mahbub Khan) - USA
Date:  February 1, 2017

Dear Basher,

I am now back to California, USA with my family in good health after the month-long family trip to Bangladesh from Dec-22-2016 to Jan-18-2017, after 23 years. The Dhaka city that I knew 23 years ago has been lost from this planet Earth. I visited an unknown city on planet Mars that people called Dhaka. We stayed in Banani with a wonderful family, who did a lot of good things and very nice things for us.

I was very glad to see the very successful family gathering program at Khan-Bari in Nowgow on December 30, 2016. It was a very large family gathering of probably over one thousand people as the extended family members of our respected Zamir Uddin Khan. I was also glad that this family gathering was also attended by various community leaders of our surrounding villages, Primary school teachers and Headmasters, High school teachers and Headmasters, College Professors and Principals, Police Officials, Union Council members and Chairs, Upo-Zilla Porishod members and Chairs and several other special guests. They all were entertained with lunch that included Polao, Roast chicken, Beef and special Yogurt (Doi). All the food items were very delicious and there were plenty of food for everyone. This huge big gathering and program of family members and guests was managed very well and in a very peaceful and disciplined way. It was very well-done. There were also plenty of additional meals for the volunteers and some guests for those two days. The whole program was managed very well. It was also a good idea to build the welcoming gates for the many guests.

I am very glad that I took my family to Nowgow from Dhaka on Dec-29 Thursday, and so, they immensely enjoyed the slaughtering of the Ox and chickens on Thursday night and peeling and cutting the meat and cooking meat, chicken, milk for Doi in many big containers by digging hole on the ground all night on Thursday night for over a thousand people. All of my family members enjoyed it very much more than a festival.

I was very glad that I was able to pledge to donate all of my village land, my village home, my village building, and my Saturia Upo-Zilla plot of land to the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation in front of this large family gathering on December 30 in Nowgow. I was also very glad that I made this donation pledge in the form of announcement as well as in writing with my signature and the signatures of many family members as witnesses in this large family gathering in Nowgow, where I was born and where I grew up. I e-mailed my written pledge of donation to many of our family members before Dec-30 signature, but just in case some of the Foundation team members did not see it or know it, I am copy-pasting part of it here again between the two double lines:

============================================
Quote from the Donation Pledge Declaration:

Description of the Properties:
1. North (Uttor) Ag-Teghari, Agricultural land, 51 decimals
2. South (Dokkhin) Ag-Teghari, Agricultural land, 103 decimals
3. North (Uttor) Nowgow, Agricultural land, 78 decimals
4. Ghior, Agricultural land, 37 decimals
5. North (Uttor) Nowgow, House and Building, 7 decimals
6. Kaonnara, Saturia Bazar land, 7 decimals
Total: 283 Decimals

I, Dr. Mahbubur Rahman Khan (Mohammad Ali Khan) do hereby pledge to donate all of the above-listed properties to Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation as per the following:

1. I will complete this Donation by following the appropriate registration process through the office of the Registrar on payment of the appropriate registration fees and my signatures on the registration papers at anytime within the next 4 years (December-2020). This registration fee can be paid by any and all Khan-family members. These 4 years will be used as the observation period for the good functionality of the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation in terms of its sound operation and continued good Charity activities for the needy people.

2.  My donation of these properties to Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation for Charitable projects and services to the needy members of the community at large is sincere and selfless and final after the completion of the registration process. From that point on, the Management of the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation will be free to use these properties in any way they feel appropriate including the sale and lease in order to serve the needy people in the best possible way.

3. In case of my death during the observation period of 4 years, my heirs will complete the donation process for the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation.

4.  However, here are some of my suggestions about these properties:

(i).  Not to sell any of these properties, if at all possible.

(ii).  House and Building:  The Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation can immediately take possession of this house-building from today, December 30, 2016, and use it for the observation period for (a) the Foundation Office, for (b) various charity projects including Health clinic, and (c) as a guest house. In future, the fund can be collected from various Khan Family members to construct the second floor of this building in order to increase the potential use of this building, where the ground floor can be used for the Foundation Office and Charity activities and the upper floor can be used as guest house for visiting Khan Family members and other guests. Abul Kalam Khan and his immediate family members will have free and open access to this house and building just like all other Khan family members and community members.

(iii).  Agricultural Farm land: The Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation can immediately take possession of the agricultural Farm lands listed above from today, December 30, 2016, and use it for the observation period for (a) fund generating resources for the Foundation through leasing and by other means, (b) to inspire other potential donors of the Khan Family to donate their land or other properties and resources to the Foundation, and (c) to use these combined properties as part of the bigger charity projects and greater community development projects of the Foundation.

(iv).  Saturia land:  (a) Quamrul Khan will continue to do his business and live with his family in the current two rooms during the observation period and beyond until a large building is built on the entire 7 decimals of land. Then after the construction of the large building of several stories, Quamrul will get two rooms for use for free with one room for business and the other room for residence for the whole life of Quamrul and his wife. (b) The Foundation committee will arrange to build a 3 to 4 storied building on the entire 7 decimals of land within a few years with the contribution and participation of various Khan-Family members, which will have 15 to 20 different rooms in the names of the 8 sons and 2 daughters and 2 wives of our respected Grandfather Zamir Uddin Khan. One room can be museum about the Khan Family. Other rooms can have various charity activities including monthly or weekly Health clinic, Computer training class, Language class, Job training class, Sewing training classes, Family counseling, Free Tutorial classes for school and college students, etc. Quamrul will use two rooms for free for life. Some remaining rooms can be rented out to various businesses and the income can be used to do charity services of the Foundation for the needy people. There can be a big sign of Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation in front of the building, which can be seen by thousands of people in this Big-Bazar of the Upo-Zilla center and many needy people from hundred different villages around the Saturia Upo-Zilla center will get benefit from this Zamir Uddin Khan Charity Foundation. This Saturia project can become a big project and a very important project of Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation to help many needy people.

I am signing this donation paper very happily in presence of my wife and children, my brothers and sisters, my nephews and nieces, many khan family members, many relatives and many community guests, at a large and festive family gathering feast of several hundred people.

===============================================

Please continue to work together as a united Khan family members along with all the extended family members of our respected Zamir Uddin Khan along with various educationists and community leaders of our surrounding villages in order to serve the needy people in a very modest and humble way. As per my declared and written pledge, as quoted above, I will come to Bangladesh again after 4 years in December 2020 to complete the registration and donation paperwork process of my listed properties for the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation, Insha Allah.

Kalu and Quamrul are very affectionate to me and I have stated that very clearly in my declaration in front of the big family gathering. So, please tell everyone  not to do any unnecessary talks outside of my announced and written donation pledge declaration, which can hurt or harass Kalu and Quamrul, because that is not good for the Foundation.

Then on the next day on Dec-31 Saturday, all the Charity programs went very well. The distribution of over 450 winter blankets went well at the Foundation Office for BUFLA (www.bufla.com) to the needy people of several surrounding villages, which was coordinated by the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation (www.ZamirUddinKhanFoundation.com). The free Health Clinic and Eye camp and also the services for the Maternity patients for several hundred needy patients from many surrounding villages went very well at our village Primary school. The Award ceremony that was arranged by Roushan for the school students and Madrasha students also went very well. My family members were very happy to participate in the Blanket distribution, the Health clinic, and also the Award distribution Ceremony. So, Dec-30 and Dec-31 were two very busy days but very worthwhile days. It was good to invite the Media personnel to record these programs and activities and I was glad to see that some of those programs were published.

Our trip to the two graveyards on Friday morning Dec-30 was very special and well-planned where many of our Murubbi-s and family members from our Khan family and from our villages are resting eternally. Musharraf did very touching Du'a at both graveyards.

I have watched the 90 minutes long DVD on the two days of many program in Nowgow that you gave me in Dhaka. The video pictures came out very clear and in very good quality. We will need to post those videos and Photographs on the Foundation website sometimes.

On Saturday evening, our short trip to Titu's College was very good and very informative. We enjoyed that trip.

On Sunday, January 1, our long trip from Nowgow to Dhaka was very good via Gopalpur (Bara Bu and Jahanara), Ghariala (Lily and Buji's children), Manikganj (Eva, Shibly, Hazera's house, Vetku Bhai and Basher) and we were back to Dhaka by past midnight. It was a very good and very informative trip for me and for my family.

In very heavy traffic in Dhaka and with the driver's high efficiency, we were barely able to visit over 25 different families and houses in Dhaka, some on my side and also some on Reena's side of the families, at different locations including Banani, Gulshan, Dhanmondi, Bari Dhara, Badda, Mohammadpur, Shamoli, Uttara, Kalabagan etc, as well as in Manikganj and 3 times to Narayanganj. We drove by Dhaka University Curzon Hall and also the Jahangirnagar University campus. We barely managed to visit our other properties including the Dhanmondi flats, Moinertek land near Uttara and Jahangirnagar University Cooperative Housing Society, which looked like a very beautiful Arunapolli residential campus, where my nearly one bigha plot is located just near the Masjid, Community center, big playground and a big pond where ducks were swimming in a quiet and peaceful environment within a gated and guarded campus. I felt like living there permanently. A good number of Professors have built their houses there and are living there with their families in this gated housing compound.

Our trip to DUET in Gazipur was really very nice where Roushan and you (Basher) also joined. That was very nice of DUET-VC Alauddin to show the very kind hospitality. Alauddin is indeed a very nice person. Please give Alauddin my best regards. Please also thank Noresh on my behalf for his help in that trip to DUET. Me and my family enjoyed that visit to DUET very much.

We had 3 meetings of the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation team members, one at Farida's house in Dhaka before Nowgow gathering, one at Khurshed's house during the Nowgow programs, and one at Firoze's house in Dhaka after the Nowgow programs. All 3 meetings were very important and very successful. I was very glad to see the outcome of these 3 meetings. These 3 meetings gave me the confidence that Khan family members and the extended family members of our respected Zamir Uddin Khan, along with the various educationists and community leaders of our surrounding villages can indeed work together to take the Foundation to the next higher levels in order to serve the needy people in a very modest and humble way.

My heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers of the Foundation for their remarkable services that were demonstrated in all the events of two days in Nowgow. My congratulations are to all the General Body members and the new Executive Committee members of the Foundation. Please help the new Executive Committee members during the transition in a very reasonable way through your mentoring process. Please continue to remain fully engaged and fully helpful in all major aspects of the Foundation activities and Projects on a continuous basis.

We also had several good family meetings with my immediate family members including my wife and children, my brothers and sisters, and my nephews and nieces in Narayanganj and also in Dhaka. We had a lot important discussions about my donation plan, about our various current plans and our future plans. Those meetings were very valuable to me materially as well as emotionally.

I bought two Laptop Computers from USA for the Zamir Uddin Khan Foundation before coming to Bangladesh, and I also bought two printers for the Foundation in Dhaka, and I gave all those 4 items to you in Dhaka. At that point, you mentioned to me that you want to start Computer Training class at our Foundation. So, I felt the need to have at least two more computers to start the Computer Training class. So, after some detail discussion with you on phone last week and this week, I bought two more laptop computers here in California for the Foundation from Tonmoy's Computer store. Tonmoy is bringing those two laptop computers to Bangladesh next week. Please come to Narayanganj next week on Thursday (Feb-9) or on Friday (Feb-10) to pick up those two computers for the Foundation and please start the Computer training class at the Foundation office in Nowgow as soon as possible. You can also spend some time with Jhinu Bhai in Narayanganj at that time and give him all updates. He can hear everything, he can understand everything, he wants to know all the updates, but he cannot reply or he cannot speak very clearly because his tongue has cancerous soar, and so he cannot move his tongue in pain. We are looking at various options for his treatment, nutritious feeding and pain relief.

My Physics class mates of Dhaka University Curzon Hall who joined the Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University in 1972 as lecturers with me became Professors, Chairmen, Deans, Pro-Vice Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, UGC members etc. They had a re-union of our 15 to 20 classmates at Ramna Restaurant on January 4, right after our Nowgow programs.  They have now retired from Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University after 65 years of age. Some of them have done Hajj recently after their retirement, and some of them have really changed so much in appearance that I could not recognize majority of them, and I am not alone. My friend Shafiq was sitting on my right and Shah Jahan was sitting on my left during the lunch. So, Shafiq asked me quietly if the person sitting on my left side was our classmate. So, I turned to my left, and asked Shah Jahan to please introduce himself to Shafiq as our classmate. We all laughed. It was a great gathering with a lot of fun memories at the University classes and Halls and University Faculties.

I went with my family to a dinner party at the beautiful Gulshan house of Dr. Muniruzzaman (Ex Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University) with some of our retired faculty classmates and it was also a very nice evening together with some of our very close friends. Thanks a lot to Munir.

In my trip to Bangladesh after 23 years, I saw that some of the elderly members of our family and the villages that I knew in Bangladesh in 1993 have died, including Makbul Kaka, Joli Bhai, Meser Bhai,  Jabbar Bhai and Bhabi, Ishaq Bhai and Bhabi, Huq Bhai, Shawkat Bhai and Bhabi, Azhar Bhai, Wadud Bhai, Fazlu Bhai, Aziz Bhai, Basher's mother, Halima Bhabi, Rizia, and some others. On Reena's side, Dolly Apa, Hena Fupu, Hamidur Rahman Bhai, and some others have passed away. Many of the younger people that I knew have become elderly now. It is also sad that several of our elderly family members are now ill, including Bara Bhai, Jhinu Bhai, Ambi-Bu, Luthfor, Shuruj, Babu and some others. Several senior members of Reena's family whom we visited in Dhaka are also ill, including Matin Kaka, Poni Apa, Roni Apa's husband, Juthi Apa's husband Prof Dr. Harun-ur-Rashid, and some others. We all pray to Allah (swa) for their speedy recovery and good health. Also, all the youths of our family and our extended family that I met this time were unknown to me because they were not born when I was there last time in 1993. So, it was somewhat emotionally stretching and overwhelming for me.

It was a wonderful family trip for us to Bangladesh after such a long time of 23 years where we met so many family members, relatives, friends and various community members and community leaders of our surrounding villages and also some special guests. So, it was also somewhat emotionally touching and overwhelming for me. Reena enjoyed the trip. Madhury enjoyed the trip and she gave Medical advice to some people. Monika also enjoyed the trip and when I asked Jamal about the trip to Bangladesh, he said: "Information Intense". I am very grateful to Allah (swa) for our wonderful Family trip to Bangladesh after so many years.
