By the way, I don't think I  sent you this story but the story is very much in line with what you are saying re people coming out in support and protesting their government's actions.  But then even in rabidly right-wing Texas there is the rule of law, especially for white people, which emboldens them to come out and protest. I doubt if people anywhere in BD would do that to protest mistreatment of Biharis or Hindus, but then they would risk far, far more. Check it out…

More detail on the Austin story here…

Participants in Tuesday's Texas Muslim Capitol Day were protected by a massive human circle made up of at least 1,000 supporters.

I hear you – and I have a lot of sympathy for your view – but I cannot fully agree. If you go by what you say, then no one from BD could be angry or outraged about anything that happens in the US so long as it does not descend to the standards and practices within BD. Ultimately you have to hold the people and institutions of a country which enjoys the bounties that wealth and prosperity bring to a higher standard – although someone from a country like BD where the standards of ethics and morality are far lower should always keep that in mind when judging others. Doesn't mean they cannot or should not judge.

Arif:
Actually, I wasn't quite saying BD should be measured by the same yardstick.  Although – why not?   BD can't compare/compete in many respects – but in the matter of morality and ethics?  Why should she relegate herself to a position of inferiority in that regard?  That is what is mildly irritating to me: the act of individuals who give a free pass to BD and/or Bangalees (indeed almost any country and people) on breaches of morality and ethics but turn apoplectic with moral outrage when America or Americans perpetrate the same or breaches of less moral/ethical moment.  Consider what you said – the absence of the rule of law in BD – shouldn't BD-Americans first and foremost be apoplectic about that?  Of course, you can dissect my statement and show instances where some people have done precisely that and consider that equal to the action taken by Americans against Trump.  To me it will nevertheless smack of the pot calling the kettle black.
BUT – even for that, I am conflicted.  Because in America (as in other advanced societies) people have the right to express their opinions even if their opinions have a double standard to them.  Trump by doing what he is doing and being what he is, is violating these and other values most Americans treasure.  He did not get the popular vote and now there is popular resistance to him.  What is disgusting is the Republicans still eagerly lapping up the liquid defecation he continues to spew.

Comparing BD – a third world nation – with the US – a first world nation, and a self-proclaimed leader of the "free" world – is problematic. The difference is the absence of the rule of law in the first case, and the expectation that it should be present in the other. When that so-called leader of the free world discriminates blatantly on the basis of religion and denies due process to valid visa holders, particularly permanent resident (green card) visa holders, was valid justification for outrage even by third worlders. As for the matter of citizens protesting (without consequences to life and liberty), the expectation of the rule of law applies in spades.

Dear Yama:

You neglected to read the heading of the piece, "Alternate Truth."  Everything I say about BD is opposite of the truth that pertains thereat.
I wrote the piece in order to get off my chest the mild irritation I feel towards BD-Americans who are incensed, incensed mind you, at the slightest break from the ideal by this country.  The selfsame people are loath to make a peep when the exact same ideals are violently trampled in BD, are often non-existent and, indeed alien.   Take what you said about immigrants.  Bangladesh does not allow them.  Period.  But the righteous outrage many BD-Americans feel when America, which has a most generous immigration policy, does not open its doors no questions asked to all comers who express a desire to come, is something quite marvelous to behold.
Look at the spontaneous huge protest rallies that broke out here when Trump came out with his Muslim ban.  Tens of thousands braved the cold to express their anger.  A vast majority of them don't know any Muslims.  How many countrywide protests have taken place on a point of ideology in BD when the shoe was on the other foot?
My mild irritation stems from the fact that I happen to believe those who live in glass houses should not change with the lights on.  I daresay I laid the sarcasm on so thick that my intent got buried in it.
Having said all that – I am conflicted because as Americans, BD-Americans have every right to freely express themselves no matter how contradictory the expression to their behavior.

S
Above in response to Yama who wrote:
it is not possible to migrate to bd. we do not issue immigration visas. the bd population did not grow by way of immigration but by way of reproduction and perhaps to some minute degree by returning emigrants. we are actually net exporters of human beings by a very wide margin.
