Assignment - Mutiny in Bangladesh
Farida Majid The extent of brutality and the skill with which they were executed could not have come from ordinary BDR soldiers. They showed hallmarks of trained terrorist tactics. The killers looked like they were outsiders. The assault weapon-wielding men had their faces covered with bandanas. We later realized that the color and design of the bandanas were those used by the Jihadists of Hijb-ut-Tahrir of UK. I got info over the internet about close connection between them and SaQa Chowdhury of BNP, who would definitely have an interest in scuttling the newly elected Govt. -- an election that BNP badly lost. It reminded of, and was actually an attempted coup in the model of the 1975 brutal assassination of Sheikh Mujib and his family.

Hefazot was left alone on May 05. BNP , JI and other opportunists were sitting behind to loot the success from Hefazot, if it came by. They didn't join Hefazot actively to make it a national effort! Hefazot issue was a national issue and if the whole country united, BAL killings wudnt hv been successful as Paki killings weren't successful. Of course, we always need the help of armed forces to succeed. BNP and the country lost armed forces support as they sat idle to see BAL courts killing valiant officers and solders hanged without a word!
It puzzles me even now how armed forces were sitting tight to see their officers, solders and families mutiliated and murdered in Peelkhana waiting for indian controlled orders!

টুডে ডেস্কগত ১১ এপ্রিল হেফাজতে ইসলামের আমির আল্লামা আহমদ শফীসহ তিন শতাধিক আলেমকে গণভবনে ডেকে নিয়ে তাদের সঙ্গে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার একান্ত বৈঠকের পর থেকেই রাজনীতি এক নতুন দিকে মোড় নিচ্ছে। বলা যায় হেফাজতে ইসলাম এখন পুরোপুরি সরকারের নিয়ন্ত্রণে। পূর্ব থেকেই সরকারের নিয়ন্ত্রণে থাকা হেফাজতের লালবাগ মাদরাসা কেন্দ্রিক মুফতি ফয়জুল্লাহ গ্রুপটির নেতারা এখন সরকারের পরিকল্পনা অনুযায়ী এরশাদের নতুন রাজনৈতিক জোটে যোগ দিচ্ছে বলে আভাস পাওয়া যাচ্ছে।খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা গেছে, হেফাজতকে নিয়ন্ত্রণে সরকার অস্ত্র হিসেবে ব্যবহার করছে সংগঠনটির নেতাকর্মীদের বিরুদ্ধে করা মামলাগুলোকে। হেফাজতের বিরুদ্ধে করা সবগুলো মামলাই এখন নিষ্ক্রিয় অবস্থায় আছে। আর গতকাল বুধবার প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা গণভবনে একটি অনুষ্ঠানে পুলিশ প্রশাসনকে নির্দেশ দিয়েছেন যে, ৫ মে'র তাণ্ডবের ঘটনায় হেফাজতের কোনো নেতাকর্মীকে হয়রানি না করতে। প্রধানমন্ত্রীর এমন ঘোষণায় রাজনৈতিক অঙ্গনে আবার নতুন করে আলোচনার সৃষ্টি হচ্ছে।জানা গেছে, বিএনপি-জামায়াতকে কোনঠাসা করার মতো সরকারের হাতে নতুন কোনো ইস্যু নেই। তাই ২০১৩ সালের ৫ মে মতিঝিলের শাপলা চত্বরের তাণ্ডবের ঘটনাকে সরকার এখন সামনে নিয়ে আসার চিন্তা করছে। বিএনপি-জামায়াতকে সহিংস ঘটনার নির্দেশদাতা হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করে তাদের ওপর পুরো ঘটনার দায়ভার চাপাবে।গত দুইদিন আগে ঢাকা মহানগর পুলিশের অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ কমিশনার মনিরুল ইসলাম সংবাদ সম্মেলনে বলেছেন, ৫ মে'র তাণ্ডবের নির্দেশদাতারা চিহ্নিত হয়েছে। নির্দেশদাতা কারা তা প্রকাশ না করলেও জানা গেছে, বিএনপি-জামায়াতের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বেশ কিছু নেতাকে ফাঁসানোর টার্গেট করেছে সরকার। খুব দ্রুতই তাদের নামে চার্জশিট দেয়া হতে পারে বলেও জানা গেছে।যদিও সেদিন আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা মোফাজ্জল হোসেন চৌধুরী মায়া, মাহবুব উল আলম হানিফ ও ওবায়দুল কাদেরের ইন্ধনেই যুবলীগ, ছাত্রলীগ, স্বেচ্ছাসেবক লীগ ও ওলামা লীগের নেতাকর্মীরা শাপলা চত্বর, দৈনিক বাংলা মোড়, পল্টন ও গুলিস্তান এলাকায় তাণ্ডব সৃষ্টি করেছিল। দেবাশীষ নামের স্বেচ্ছাসেবক লীগের এক নেতার নেতৃত্বে সেদিন বায়তুল মোকাররমের দক্ষিণগেটে কুরআন শরীফে আগুন দিয়েছিল তারা।রাজনীতিক বিশ্লেষকরা মনে করছেন, এর মাধ্যমে মূলত সরকার এক ঢিলে দুই পাখি মারতে চাচ্ছে। প্রথমত: হেফাজতের সঙ্গে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বৈঠক নিয়ে রাজনৈতিক অঙ্গনসহ বিভিন্ন অঙ্গনে এখনো বিতর্কের ঝড় বইছে। মানুষের দৃষ্টিকে ভিন্নখাতে প্রবাহিত করতেই এ পথে হাঁটছে সরকার। দ্বিতীয়ত: বিএনপি-জামায়াতকে কোনঠাসা করা। বিভিন্ন গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার মাধ্যমে সরকার জানতে পেরেছে যে, বিএনপি-জামায়াত সরকার বিরোধী আন্দোলনের জন্য আবার প্রস্তুত হচ্ছে। তারা যাতে কোনো ইস্যুতে মাঠে নামতে না পারে সেজন্য হেফাজতের মামলা দিয়ে তাদেরকে হয়রানি করা
