You are partially right - oil money and Saudi King's status are intimately connected. When oil price was very high, Saudi King's position was very close to God. However, as Saudi oil is becoming less and less crucial to the world economy, so is Saudi Arabia's position.
There is also another element at play here in international scene. Western leaders at long last have come to their senses that they must let Saudi King know that all the duplicitous things the King had been doing have not gone unnoticed and the time of reckoning is coming close. So, there should not be excessive show of respect and politeness any more.
