The Oxford Dictionaries' definition of "secularism" is "the principle of separation of the state from religious institutions." Other dictionaries have the same definition (worded slightly differently). So, it is really not a matter of peaceful coexistence of all faiths, which is not possible when some faiths detest some other faiths. For secularism and for peaceful coexistence of all faiths, people would need to give up quite a bit of their faiths.

Power may not bring peace for Israelis, but it surely has given them survival and success in the hostile world. Israelis were forced to fight and challenge all odds, and that's what made them excel. They had to.  Peace, on the other hand, cannot be attained unilaterally. It requires proper environment.

Secularism also needs an environment where all faiths can coexist peacefully. But, I do not see that environment anywhere in the world due to worldwide Islamist movement.

I do not agree with most of what you wrote, Mr. 'Dristi Pat'. Could you change your weirdo style of signing as 'Pat'? Call yourself 'Dristipat' or 'Dristi' to make it sound like a good pseudonym.

It is a shame in Israel and in India that religious fanatics of the Jew and Hindu kinds seem to be better than secular people in countering Islamic fanaticism. India should have had no nonsense secularists, tolerating no Muslim or Hindu religious rubbish. They should have not only ensured the human and citizenship rights of both Hindus and non-Hindus (including Muslims, of course) of India; they should have punished both Pakistan and Bangladesh for persecuting non-Muslims and forcing them to take refuge in India. Unfortunately, India's secularists have proven to be idiots, tolerating and supporting the religious idiocies of both Muslims and Hindus. Their irresponsible politics of appeasing Islamic fanaticism gave the Hindu fanatics popularity in India, in spite of the fact that most Hindus look at religion with a lot more logic that what most Muslims do.

India is not a Hindu country, and should not be so. To correct injustice is to establish justice for all, not to be unjust to people who have committed acts of injustice; and certainly not to be unjust to the children and grandchildren of people who have committed injustice.

Israel's power has not brought peace for them. The contest in religious fanaticism between Muslims and Jews would elude peace in that part of the world, never mind how many Nobel Peace Prize is awarded for the efforts for peace.

That's right, not only in India, worldwide nationalist movement is on the rise, and you can thank Islamists for that.

As long as Islamists threats are there, no one can stop nationalist movement around the world.

Indian Hindus have been connived into creating  secular India, but creating Pakistan as Muslim country in 1947.

Hindus are aware of that fact, and they would surely be happy to see that injustice be corrected now.

India, being a Hindu country, could have been much more successful and strong than it is now.

It could be just as successful and strong as Israel has been as a Jewish State.

ভারতে নানা তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ পরিবর্তন হচ্ছে। এই পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে প্রায়ই মুসলমানদের প্রান্তিকীকরণের ব্যাপারটা আলোচিত হয়। প্রতিটি নির্বাচনের সঙ্গে এই ব্যাপারটা আরও জোরালো হয়ে উঠছে। সম্প্রতি উত্তর প্রদেশের নির্বাচনে আরএসএসের রাজনৈতিক মঞ্চ ভারতীয় জনতা পার্টির (বিজেপি) জয় থেকে বোঝা যায়, ব্যাপারটা আরও জোরালো হয়েছে। এখন উত্তর প্রদেশের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় গো রক্ষার নামে উদ্যত জনতা মুসলমানদের ওপর প্রকাশ্যে আরও বেশি বেশি আক্রমণ চালাচ্ছে। কিন্তু তাতে বৃহৎ রাজনৈতিক শ্রেণির মধ্যে বিরাগ সৃষ্টি হয়নি। বৃহত্তর হিন্দুসমাজ এ ব্যাপারে নিশ্চেতন।

হিন্দুদের এ ব্যাপারে উদাসীন থাকার যুক্তি হিসেবে বলা হচ্ছে, মুসলমানদের গো-মাংস খাওয়ার কারণে তাদের মধ্যে রোষ সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। কিন্তু মসজিদে হামলা বা ঘুমন্ত ইমামকে হত্যা করার পরও পুলিশ বা রাজনৈতিক শ্রেণি নড়েচড়ে বসেনি। ওদিকে ধর্মান্তরকরণ বন্ধের নামে খ্রিষ্টানদের ওপর আক্রমণ বন্ধ হয়েছে। তবে এরা সংখ্যায় খুব কম। তারা একটা খোলসের মধ্যে ঢুকে যাচ্ছে।

ভারতের মুসলমান ও খ্রিষ্টান সংখ্যালঘুদের ওপর হিন্দু কর্তৃত্ব প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে সবকিছুই হিন্দু প্রভাববলয়ে নিয়ে আসা হচ্ছে। সব ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতিতেই এটা ঘটছে। এর মধ্য দিয়ে এতকালের শক্তিশালী আঞ্চলিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক বৈচিত্র্য মুছে ফেলা হচ্ছে। ভারতের বাঙালি, মালয়ালি ও অহমিয়াদের নিজস্ব নববর্ষ আছে, যা বাংলা নববর্ষ, বিষু ও বিহু নামে পরিচিত। কিন্তু গত তিন বছরে এই নামগুলো ধীরে ধীরে মুছে ফেলার চেষ্টা হয়েছে। এই নামগুলো উল্লেখ না করে মানুষকে নতুন হিন্দু বর্ষে স্বাগত জানানো হচ্ছে। এ ছাড়া ঐতিহ্যবাহী অনুষ্ঠানগুলোকে এখন জাতীয়তাবাদী স্লোগানে ভূষিত করা হচ্ছে।

ভারতের প্রতিটি অঞ্চলের নিজস্ব দেব-দেবতা আছে, যাঁরা সেখানে চূড়ান্তভাবে পূজিত হন। কেরালার দেবতা হচ্ছেন বালি, যাঁকে মালয়ালিরা গভীরভাবে শ্রদ্ধা করেন। কিন্তু গত বছর বিজেপি বালির জায়গায় আরেক পৌরাণিক চরিত্র বিষ্ণুর অবতার বামনাকে আনার চেষ্টা করে। কিংবদন্তি অনুসারে এই বামনা চাতুর্যের সঙ্গে বালিকে উৎখাত করেছিলেন। বিজেপির এই ঔদ্ধত্যে মানুষ ক্ষুব্ধ হয়েছে। কিন্তু বিজেপির এতে কিছু এসে যায় না। একইভাবে এ বছর দেখা গেল, হিন্দু দেবতা রামের জন্মতিথি রাম নবমী এমন সব অঞ্চলে আগ্রাসীভাবে উদ্‌যাপন করা হলো, যেখানে রাম দেবতা হিসেবে পূজিত নন। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কথাই বলা যায়, যেখানে দুর্গাই প্রধান দেবী। রাম নবমী সেখানে কখনোই বড় অনুষ্ঠান ছিল না। কিন্তু বিজেপি এবার পশ্চিম বাংলার ২০টি জেলায় আগ্রাসী শোভাযাত্রা বের করে। শুধু কলকাতাতেই রাম নবমীর ২২টি শোভাযাত্রা হয়েছে। এই প্রথমবারের মতো বাঙালিরা দেখল, ছেলেমেয়েরা শোভাযাত্রায় তলোয়ার খেলছে। হিন্দুদের আরেক জনপ্রিয় পৌরাণিক চরিত্র হচ্ছে হনুমান, তাঁর পতাকার রং লাল, যিনি নিজেও রামের ভক্ত। কিন্তু এবার পাটনায় দেখা গেল, হনুমানের পতাকা গেরুয়া হয়ে গেছে। গেরুয়া হচ্ছে হিন্দুদের রাষ্ট্রীয় প্রতীক।

মূলত বিজেপি ভারতের জাতীয়তাবাদের প্রতিটি উপাদানের মধ্যে সৃজনশীলভাবে হিন্দুত্ব ঢুকিয়ে দিচ্ছে। কিন্তু হিন্দুরা এতে বাদ সাধছে না। জাতীয় প্রতীক আত্মসাৎ করে তার মধ্যে হিন্দু উপাদান যুক্ত করা বিজেপি ও আরএসএসের দীর্ঘদিনের কৌশল। ১০ বছর ধরে এরা ভারতের জাতীয় পতাকাকে হিন্দু জাতীয়তাবাদের প্রতীক হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে আসছে। তারা বেশ কয়েকবার ত্রিরঙ্গা যাত্রা করেছে। এই জমায়েত দেখে মনে হয়, সেনাবাহিনী দেশের কোনো অঞ্চলের দখল নিতে অগ্রসর হচ্ছে। বিজেপি বেশ কিছু কাল ধরে জাতীয়তাবাদের বাদ্য বাজিয়ে আসছে। এরা রাজনীতির তরিকা পাল্টেছে, আগে তারা বলত, 'হিন্দুধর্ম বিপদে পড়েছে', আর এখন তারা বলে, 'জাতি বিপদে পড়েছে'। এরা হিন্দি গণমাধ্যমগুলোর সহায়তায় সফলভাবে এটা দেখাতে পেরেছে যে, বামপন্থীরা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে জাতিবিরোধী চিন্তা ছড়াচ্ছে। ব্যাপারটা এমন হয়েছে যে কাশ্মীরি জনগণের আন্দোলনের প্রতি সহানুভূতি দেখানো জাতিবিরোধী কাজ।

বিজেপি ও আরএসএস ভারতের বিভিন্ন আঞ্চলিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলো মুছে দিয়ে সবকিছু বৃহৎ হিন্দু কলেবরে নিয়ে আসতে চাইছে। ধীরে ধীরে ও পর্যায়ক্রমে তারা বিভিন্ন ধর্মীয় ও সাংস্কৃতিক প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোতে নিজেদের লোক ঢুকিয়ে সেগুলোর নিয়ন্ত্রণ নেওয়ার চেষ্টা করছে। বিজেপি মানুষকে বোঝাতে চাইছে, তারা সবাই একীভূত হিন্দু সত্তার অংশ। এই যে বিভিন্ন সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য ও হিন্দুত্ব এবং একই সঙ্গে হিন্দুত্ববাদ ও জাতীয়তাবাদের মধ্যে সীমারেখা ঘুচিয়ে দেওয়া হচ্ছে, তার মাধ্যমে জাতীয়তাবাদী হিন্দুত্ববাদ বা হিন্দু জাতীয়তাবাদ তৈরির চেষ্টা চলছে। সেটা করতে গিয়ে ভারতের সংখ্যালঘু মুসলমান ও খ্রিষ্টানদের অগ্রাহ্য করা হচ্ছে। কিন্তু তাতে কারও মাথাব্যথা নেই।
