A surprise announcement addressing an “unprecedented” press briefing at the Army Officers Club by the Director of Personnel Services Directorate of the Bangladesh Army on January 19 afternoon appears to have buried media enthusiasm over possible compromise between the two major blocks of mainstream politics. The media has been speculating a lot about an interim all-party government formula replacing the abandoned caretaker government system to oversee the next general election. The first blow to the expectation of a compromise to smooth over the long-running political crisis in the country came from the lame outcome of the President’s dialogue for political consensus-building over the mechanism of free and fair elections. The army’s announcement last week of the news of a failed coup attempt has been followed immediately by claims from the Indian intelligence that they had tipped off the Bangladesh authorities about the impending danger of a coup, and, the army moved swiftly to foil the alleged coup attempt. “Indian intelligence has watched the plotters for about eight months and unearthed the plot,” the Daily Mail of the UK and the Anandabazar Patrika of Kolkata, India, quoted Indian intelligence officials as saying.

The Indian claim carried a message that the electronic communications of the members of the Bangladesh armed forces have long been bugged by India . India has a unique way of dealing with Bangladesh , and, it has once again hinted to intervene militarily, if needed, to save the regime in Dhaka . When non-interference in the internal affairs of another country is the norm, why this aberration with respect to Bangladesh ?

MP Anil Kumar, a retired pilot of Indian Air Force, wrote on January 12 Maldives should merge with the Indian Federation. India should offer the Maldives statehood within our Union ... to act in good faith, and also with an eye on our national interest.

A founding member of SAARC, Maldives is a small island nation state on the Indian Ocean was having political unrest during the last two weeks.

Writing for Rediff News on January 12, Kumar said, the Maldives will be the nucleus of future security order in the Indian ocean . Patently the Maldivians will have to migrate before the portended watery grave.

Needless to say that India is worried at the China ’s venture of a military base on Mahe in the Indian Ocean island-nation of Seychelles .

Indian Maoists kill 24 govt. security personnel

Death of Kishenji has lulled but not ended the Maoist movement in India . Kishenji, a top leader of the Indian Maoists, was killed in custody in November last year, the outlawed CPI (Maoist) had said refuting government claim that he died in gunfight with the paramilitary forces. Belying the government expectation, some 24 security personnel were killed by the Maoists in Jharkhand alone during the last two months. The latest attack on January 22 left 13 jawans killed when the red rebels triggered a landmine blast that blew up their vehicle.

Security forces all over India were on their toes in the wake of calls by the Maoists and secessionist groups in the Indian Northeast states for boycotting Republic Day celebrations on January 26 with threat of armed actions. Some groups have also announced strike on the day, including in state assembly election bound, where the situation was stated to be serious. Another report suggests that Maoist activities have declined in other states as the party was preparing for national convention.

The primary responsibility of the State is to ensure security for its citizens. But the Bangladesh ruling party political leaders have ignored this basic duty of the Government. Maybe they have forgotten which country they belong to.

The statement has got some relevance particularly when Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam or Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs A H Mahmood Ali say in unison that the State has nothing to do with the torture and killing of unarmed Bangladeshi citizens by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the international border.

Son of a noted political leader, Syed Ashraful Islam said last week, “The state is not worried about incidents at the border. These are everyday incidents; these have happened in the past, are happening now and will happen in future.”

Similar was the statement of A H Mahmood Ali, a freedom fighter diplomat turned politician.

After the revelation of Sura Muhammad, verse 4, Muslims have only two options, either exchange prisoners or set them free as a grace. Moreover as Muslims have entered into agreements with all countries through international protocols, Muslims have to abide by these protocols. This is because Islam says fulfill your agreements.( Sura Maida, verse 1)

That's what I knew. Then all of a sudden QR or MR informed that Islam supports enslavement of non-Muslim prisoners of war. Islam discourages slavery, but much much better modern law prohibits slavery. So the world is better with modern law as the substitute for the Quranic teachings. Also modern law is sufficient. As a matter of fact, universal principles of all religions can be incorporated into modern law so that religious laws (example, Shariah Law) become redundant. Given the pluralistic societies, thinking in this line has become so urgent.

I know half-literate Islamic teachers teach the young kids that one day the entire world will embrace Islam. I am saying this from my own experience.

Can any one give me an example of an Islamic country where everybody isor was in peace? Thinking in terms of a purely religious society is totally unproductive and divisive. Let us keep our religion within our spiritual world.

Swami Vivekananda sued against his mother and brother for his 'due share' of father's property proving that his renouncement of wealth was fake. So was his celibacy. 'Sister Nivedita' was not allowed to entrance in Ramakrishna Mission even when Vivekananda was alive. Other Sanyasins suspected an illicit relation, but chose to keep mum about it. She lived in a house rented by the Swami. After his death due to cardiac arrest, she was thrown out of that house by the mission.

"Modern laws are not sufficient,...". the ranting of a medieval crackpot is. "... history tells us that just Muslim rulers ensured peace in their territories", what a historian!! Three of four rightly guided Caliphs bled to death, the first one was poisoned; the prophet himself had a dubious one. How the Abbasids came to power? They simply slaughtered the Umayyads after inviting them to dinner. It seems that 'peace' is a three letter spelled W-A-R. This guy should be appointed Khatib in our national mosque.

I know what Quran said. That's not the point. The point is – is that a viable option, or, is that a solution to slavery? I know some people think so, without thinking. Let's do some thinking; shall we?

You believe that slavery will be over when everybody accepts Islam. Now, can you put your hand on your heart and tell me that - there is no Muslim in this world who owns a slave or slaves? Or, there are no slave-laborers in any Islamic country in the world? You can't, because - there are many slaves in the Islamic kingdoms around Africa and Middle East even in this day and age.

I am sure you know that - thousands of workers, especially women, from Malaysia , Indonesia , Thailand , Burma , etc. were brought in the Middle East ( Saudi Arabia , Qatar , etc.) as maid-servants. When they arrived, they were assigned to their respective owners. It is a major violation of contract, if any servant tries to change the owner. To keep the maid under control, the owner confiscates her/his work permit and passport. As a result, maid can never go to somebody else to seek better pay or better job or leave the country to go back to their own country whenever they want. These women are sexually violated and abused; these are modern day slaves. Many of them have committed suicide; others are trying to escape, but nowhere to turn.

I know you will say that those owners are violating the tenets of Islam. You may be right. But, that's a lot of violators, probably - in the millions, at the heart of the Islamic world. Now, can you guarantee me that no one will violate this particular Islamic tenets when everybody (?) in the world embraces Islam? And, also tell me - when that happy time will come. I don't want the solution of slavery at the end of the eternity. As you know, Christians have the very same goal, which is - proselytize the entire world into Christianity. Are they going to sit idle in the mean time? How about billions of Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, and Atheists?

Before you believe in something, do some analysis, and think about it logically. Don't be an intelligent blind believer; I know - it does not make sense. Believing in something blindly does not make sense also.

One does not need to be too caustic to Annemarie Schimmel ! The Holy Quran does not hide the fact that it wants the whole mankind to embrace Islam. Those who want to spread Islam do so openly and hope that one day " everybody in the world accepts Islam." One need not be a genius to understand this much. The question is what does Islam preach about slavery. Does it encourage it or discourage it? That is the moot question. One does need to be an expert to decipher that Islam discourages slavery in any form. The Holy Quran and the Prophet of Islam have been unambiguous on this message. This is better than enslaving all prisoners of war including Muslims. At least Muslims are spared. Muslim warriors kept on conquering non-Muslim kingdoms for many centuries after the death of the prophet. That means slavery could not be brought to an end and with every conquest the world saw more and more slaves. I see this as follows: slavery has always been a profitable one. Religions like Christianity and Islam had to accept and help sustain this unethical and immoral institution until the age of enlightenment (may be 15th century) denounced it. Probably we all know that African slave dealers opposed the abolition of slavery by America.

I think I can add couple of cents to this dialogue.

To start with it is nor right to expect Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to ban slavery overnight. Let me offer an example.

All of us can agree that child labor is a horrible thing for countries like Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. HOWEVER if you have to cancel it overnight, it would cause more pain to those children and their families unless it is a slow gradual process.

Islam is a religion of middle path and a practical religion (If you understand it properly). So it was clearly against making free people into slaves. The Qur'an says...

It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allâh, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allâh, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Masâkin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free, performs As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and gives the Zakât, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.) in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are AlMuttaqûn (pious).

and Islam motivated it's followers to get out of the system of slavery.

Allâh will not punish you for what is uninentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation (a deliberate oath) feed ten Masâkin (poor persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families; or clothe them; or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e. do not swear much). Thus Allâh make clear to you His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that you may be grateful.

It also ordered it's followers to treat slaves fairly.

I saw Abu Dhar Al-Ghifari wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a cloak. We asked him about that (i.e. how both were wearing similar cloaks). He replied, "Once I abused a man and he complained of me to the Prophet. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked me, 'Did you abuse him by slighting his mother?' He added, 'Your slaves are your brethren upon whom Allah has given you authority. So, if one has one's brethren under one's control, one should feed them with the like of what one eats and clothe them with the like of what one wears. You should not overburden them with what they cannot bear, and if you do so, help them (in their hard job).' "

I think most of us know the story of Bilal (RA). By asking him to call people to prayer, prophet Muhammad (PBUH) elevated this dark skinned ex-slave in front of Arabs. These are revolutionary steps when you understand all these were done over 1400 years ago!!

I'll share a little from a German scholar on Islam

Annemarie Schimmel in "Islam: An Introduction", p. 67

Slavery was not abolished by the Koran, but believers are constantly admonished to treat their slaves well. In case of illness a slave has to be looked after and well cared for. To manumit [free] a slave is highly meritorious; the slave can ransom himself by paying some of the money he has earned while conducting his own business. Only children of slaves or non-Muslim prisoners of war can become slaves, never a freeborn Muslim; therefore slavery is theoretically doomed to disappear with the expansion of Islam. The entire history of Islam proves that slaves could occupy any office, and many former military slaves, usually recruited from among the Central Asian Turks, became military leaders and often even rulers as in eastern Iran, India (the Slave Dynasty of Delhi), and medieval Egypt (the Mamluks). Eunuchs too served in important capacities, not only as the guardians of the women's quarters, but also in high administrative and military positions.

I suppose the position of Islam on slavery was not the best example for "following the essence of what is good in a religion"; it was an OK example. My reading of the Koran actually tells me that the religion asks its followers to treat slaves with fairness, and considers freeing a slave to be a good deed. It does not condemn slavery, nor does it provide any clear cut reward for freeing a slave.

However, that does not change my concept of how to follow religions properly or correctly. I do not think following anything in any religion that is more than a thousand years old should be done literally. Even the good things in them should be judged for their essence, and adapted to fit the good common senses of the civilized human minds.

Muhammad himself was not rich enough to possess any slave. However, after marriage, he owned a few. The most prominent of them was Bilal who became the first muezzin in Islam. To me, following any religion "correctly" would be to follow the essence of what is good in it, dump what is bad in it, and not waste too much time trying to prove something in it to be good when it actually looks pretty bad. I do not have the patience to hear the context in which something hateful was uttered in a religious book. Hateful words in a religious book do necessarily make that religion bad. To me, the context does not matter, because a hateful utterance is very likely to make the average follower hateful; the average follower is likely to have no time or wisdom to see the context. Also because most human beings should not have too much time to spend on religions; they need to keep using, developing and improving science and technology, without which even the religious fanatics would not have the quality of life that they are enjoying.

Here is an example of what I call "following the essence of what is good in religions." Mohammad's preaching of Islam had praise and rewards for people who freed slaves; he did not abolish slavery through his religion. To me, that was great in the 6^th century; and I can respect him for that. But now, we are not as primitive as the 6^th century people, we can do better than that. We not only abolish slavery, we treat all innocent humans with respect and dignity; we even afford a good deal of dignified treatment to criminals.

I agree with you: the process of seeking the truth is painful. The process demands that you challenge the established truths, verify them, and to learn new thing you get ready to unlearn.

Let me tell you a true story. My father (may be in thirties) was reading Kalidas's Meghadootam. He found that Hindu kings used to slaughter cows to entertain their honorable guests. He was tremendously shocked and his first reaction was to throw away the book. But eventually he overcame it and I found him as a liberal believer saying his prayers regularly throughout his family life.

By oxymoron, I meant one of the Rahman's. Now it appears that he is
not alone here. Read Zen Buddhism, and you will find plenty of it
which would appear nonsense to you. When an empty head studies
something, he comes with conclusion, then he faces the contradictions,
and finally he ends up with synthesis containing both conclusions and
contradictions. That is the essence of Hegel's philosophy. However
as the Rahman's do, they end up into Islamic literature and treats it
as final. One of them use those ideas as honest, intelligent and etc.
Out of irritation, I wrote those ideas grow in empty heads. However,
it is not untrue altogether. Only a 'flake' would stick to such
things forever.

The quote was then from one of the e-mail messages of QR. That's why I said QR or MR. Any way in another e-mail message you have said, "There is no fiction part in the Quran. It is scientific and verifiable." I do not want to hurt your religious feelings and I respect your belief although I differ greatly with you on it. If that is your final conviction, it will be useless to argue with you.

With reference to your query on "half-literate Islamic teacher", I will pay more attention to Dr. Mohammad Shahidullah, Ibrahim Khan, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad, Asghar Ali Engineer, and so on.

No where did I say " that Islam supports enslavement of non-Muslim prisoners of war. " Because it does not!! And in the Quran one will find universal laws applicable for all times to come. Modern laws are not sufficient, or else we would not see amendments of national constitutions and brawls over these amendments. Yes today most of the Muslim countries are in turmoil. But the reason is because the enemies of Islam are forever conniving to disturb them. They either plant governments who do not practice true Islamic edits or cause external problems with their money and technology. But history tells us that just Muslim rulers ensured peace in their territories. Coining words like " half-literate Islamic teachers " doesn't help either. Whose standard of literacy are you referring to?

I know what Quran said. That's not the point. The point is – is that a viable option, or, is that a solution to slavery? I know some people think so, without thinking. Let's do some thinking; shall we?

You believe that slavery will be over when everybody accepts Islam. Now, can you put your hand on your heart and tell me that - there is no Muslim in this world who owns a slave or slaves? Or, there are no slave-laborers in any Islamic country in the world? You can't, because - there are many slaves in the Islamic kingdoms around Africa and Middle East even in this day and age.

I am sure you know that - thousands of workers, especially women, from Malaysia , Indonesia , Thailand , Burma , etc. were brought in the Middle East ( Saudi Arabia , Qatar , etc.) as maid-servants. When they arrived, they were assigned to their respective owners. It is a major violation of contract, if any servant tries to change the owner. To keep the maid under control, the owner confiscates her/his work permit and passport. As a result, maid can never go to somebody else to seek better pay or better job or leave the country to go back to their own country whenever they want. These women are sexually violated and abused; these are modern day slaves. Many of them have committed suicide; others are trying to escape, but nowhere to turn.

I know you will say that those owners are violating the tenets of Islam. You may be right. But, that's a lot of violators, probably - in the millions, at the heart of the Islamic world. Now, can you guarantee me that no one will violate this particular Islamic tenets when everybody (?) in the world embraces Islam? And, also tell me - when that happy time will come. I don't want the solution of slavery at the end of the eternity. As you know, Christians have the very same goal, which is - proselytize the entire world into Christianity. Are they going to sit idle in the mean time? How about billions of Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, and Atheists?

Before you believe in something, do some analysis, and think about it logically. Don't be an intelligent blind believer; I know - it does not make sense. Believing in something blindly does not make sense also.

One does not need to be too caustic to Annemarie Schimmel ! The Holy Quran does not hide the fact that it wants the whole mankind to embrace Islam. Those who want to spread Islam do so openly and hope that one day " everybody in the world accepts Islam." One need not be a genius to understand this much. The question is what does Islam preach about slavery. Does it encourage it or discourage it? That is the moot question. One does need to be an expert to decipher that Islam discourages slavery in any form. The Holy Quran and the Prophet of Islam have been unambiguous on this message. No need to try and muddle up this message.

This is better than enslaving all prisoners of war including Muslims. At least Muslims are spared. Muslim warriors kept on conquering non-Muslim kingdoms for many centuries after the death of the prophet. That means slavery could not be brought to an end and with every conquest the world saw more and more slaves. I see this as follows: slavery has always been a profitable one. Religions like Christianity and Islam had to accept and help sustain this unethical and immoral institution until the age of enlightenment (may be 15th century) denounced it. Probably we all know that African slave dealers opposed the abolition of slavery by America.

I think I can add couple of cents to this dialogue.

To start with it is nor right to expect Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to ban slavery overnight. Let me offer an example.

All of us can agree that child labor is a horrible thing for countries like Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. HOWEVER if you have to cancel it overnight, it would cause more pain to those children and their families unless it is a slow gradual process.

Islam is a religion of middle path and a practical religion (If you understand it properly). So it was clearly against making free people into slaves. The Qur'an says...

It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allâh, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allâh, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Masâkin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free, performs As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and gives the Zakât, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.) in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are AlMuttaqûn (pious).

and Islam motivated it's followers to get out of the system of slavery.

Allâh will not punish you for what is uninentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation (a deliberate oath) feed ten Masâkin (poor persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families; or clothe them; or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e. do not swear much). Thus Allâh make clear to you His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that you may be grateful.

It also ordered it's followers to treat slaves fairly.

I saw Abu Dhar Al-Ghifari wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a cloak. We asked him about that (i.e. how both were wearing similar cloaks). He replied, "Once I abused a man and he complained of me to the Prophet. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked me, 'Did you abuse him by slighting his mother?' He added, 'Your slaves are your brethren upon whom Allah has given you authority. So, if one has one's brethren under one's control, one should feed them with the like of what one eats and clothe them with the like of what one wears. You should not overburden them with what they cannot bear, and if you do so, help them (in their hard job).' "

I think most of us know the story of Bilal (RA). By asking him to call people to prayer, prophet Muhammad (PBUH) elevated this dark skinned ex-slave in front of Arabs. These are revolutionary steps when you understand all these were done over 1400 years ago!!

I'll share a little from a German scholar on Islam

Annemarie Schimmel in "Islam: An Introduction", p. 67

Slavery was not abolished by the Koran, but believers are constantly admonished to treat their slaves well. In case of illness a slave has to be looked after and well cared for. To manumit [free] a slave is highly meritorious; the slave can ransom himself by paying some of the money he has earned while conducting his own business. Only children of slaves or non-Muslim prisoners of war can become slaves, never a freeborn Muslim; therefore slavery is theoretically doomed to disappear with the expansion of Islam. The entire history of Islam proves that slaves could occupy any office, and many former military slaves, usually recruited from among the Central Asian Turks, became military leaders and often even rulers as in eastern Iran, India (the Slave Dynasty of Delhi), and medieval Egypt (the Mamluks). Eunuchs too served in important capacities, not only as the guardians of the women's quarters, but also in high administrative and military positions.

I suppose the position of Islam on slavery was not the best example for "following the essence of what is good in a religion"; it was an OK example. My reading of the Koran actually tells me that the religion asks its followers to treat slaves with fairness, and considers freeing a slave to be a good deed. It does not condemn slavery, nor does it provide any clear cut reward for freeing a slave.

However, that does not change my concept of how to follow religions properly or correctly. I do not think following anything in any religion that is more than a thousand years old should be done literally. Even the good things in them should be judged for their essence, and adapted to fit the good common senses of the civilized human minds.

There is a term called orientalism. Eduard Said did extensive research on it. It is a recommended read for an inquiring mind. What a western scholar sees in the east and its past may not be unbiased and undistorted. I am not going into the possible reasons. Even Bankim was vocal against this sort of orientalism although the term had not been coined yet. The lesson is that we do not have to take every thing written by a western scholar about the oriental history, culture, and wisdom to be granted. But we also should not blindly reject every thing they have written about us.

I can ensure MR about one thing: by accepting the truth we know ourselves better and neither we nor our religions lose, we and our belief systems become more and more refined. Instead of rejecting Hitty and Armstrong straight away, we should read them critically while keeping an eye on other authentic resources.

Abu Talib always protected his nephew, whose uncle cum brother in law
was less sympathetic to the 'insan-i-kamil'. Talib's final answer to
Islam was that he could not trust in a religion whose follower prayed
with his posterior raised above his head. Moreover, when monotheism
was dominant in the nearby lands of Abyssinia and Damascus, the
prophet gained about seventy followers in about twelve years. The
'faith' became strong when brigandage committed by him from Yatrib
became successful. The poets believed in revelations always. Each
Arabian poet had their personal 'Kahin' from whom (s)he got her/his
verses. Poetry competition was a part of their national fesival. Abu
Lahab and his wife were superior poets than the prophet. Their sons
were married to the prophet's daughters. But soon the poetry
competition and ensuing enmity soured their relationship. The
marriages split up and the rest is history. Anyone interested may
read Philip K. Hitty or Karen Armstrong.

Last night we were gossiping with some friends after dinner. In course of our conversation, one friend told us a story. It was like this:

Two people were arguing about the direction in which the Sun rises. The first guy said – there is no controversy on this issue. The Sun always rises from the east. The second guy said, no, you are so wrong; it always rises from the West.

They argued for a while but no one is ready to move away from their respective positions.

The first guy said, "Let's stop arguing about it now, and meet again tomorrow at dawn. I will convince you that Sun rises from the east."

The second guy said, "OK, if you can convince me by tomorrow morning that - Sun rises in the east, I will give you my wife, but, if you can't, I will get your wife."

The first guy thought that the other guy is out of his mind, so he immediately agreed to the bet. They went home that night.

The second guy told his wife about the bet. His wife said, " Are you stupid, evrybody sees in the morning that - Sun rises in the east." He said, "Don't you worry, my dear; let him convince me about that."

স্টাফ রিপোর্টার ॥ রবিবারের বাতিল করা গণমিছিল কর্মসূচী পালনকালে চাঁদপুর ও লক্ষীপুরে গুলিতে ৪ জন নিহত হওয়ার ঘটনায় ৩টি পৃথক তদন্ত কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে পুলিশ সদর দফতরের তরফ থেকে একটি এবং চাঁদপুর ও লক্ষীপুর জেলায় একটি করে দুটি মোট ৩টি তদন্ত কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছে। তদন্তে দোষীদের বিরুদ্ধে কঠোর আইনগত ব্যবস্থা নেয়া হবে। সরকারকে বেকায়দায় ফেলতে কোন পুলিশ সদস্য পরিকল্পিতভাবে এমন ঘটনা ঘটিয়েছে কি-না তা খতিয়ে দেখা হচ্ছে বলে জানিয়েছেন পুলিশ মহাপরিদর্শক হাসান মাহমুদ খন্দকার।
তত্তাবধায়ক সরকার ব্যবস্থা পুনর্বহালের দাবিতে গত রবিবার বিএনপির দেশব্যাপী গণমিছিল কর্মসূচী ঘোষণা করেছিল। একই দিন আওয়ামী লীগেরও ঢাকায় নির্ধারিত সমাবেশ ছিল। দেশের প্রধান দুইটি দলের কর্মসূচী একই দিনে হওয়ায় আইনশৃক্সখলা পরিস্থিতির অবনতি হতে পারে এমন আশঙ্কায় রাজধানী ঢাকাসহ দেশের বিভিন্ন বিভাগীয় শহরে পুলিশের তরফ থেকে ১৪৪ ধারা জারি করা হয়। বিএনপি কর্মসূচী স্থগিত করে আজ গণমিছিল কর্মসূচী পালনের ঘোষণা দেয়। এমন ঘোষণার পরও বিএনপি-জামায়াতের নেতাকর্মীরা রবিবার গণমিছিল কর্মসূচী পালন করতে যায়। এ সময় পুলিশের সঙ্গে গণমিছিলে অংশগ্রহণকারীদের ব্যাপক সংঘর্ষ হয়। পুলিশ পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণে রাখতে গুলি ছুড়ে।
গুলিতে চাঁদপুরে লিমন (২৫) ও আবুল হোসেন গাজী (৫৫) এবং লক্ষীপুরে রুবেল (২২) ও আবুল কাশেম (৫০) নামে মোট ৪ জনের মৃত্যু হয়।
রবিবার রাতে পুলিশ সদর দফতরের তথ্য কর্মকর্তা এসএম কামরুল আহছ্ান জানান, চট্টগ্রাম রেঞ্জের পুলিশের অতিরিক্ত উপ-মহাপরিদর্শক বিশ্বাস আফজাল হোসেনকে প্রধান ও চট্টগ্রাম জেলার অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার নুর আলম মিনাকে সদস্য করে পুলিশ সদর দফতরের কমিটি করা হয়েছে। অন্যদিকে চাঁদপুর জেলায় গঠিত তদন্ত কমিটির প্রধান হলেন, অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার মোঃ আমির জাফর। কমিটির সদস্যরা হলেন, সদর সার্কেল এএসপি সাজ্জাতুল করিম এবং জেলা গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের ইন্সপেক্টর আতিক আহম্মেদ। আর লক্ষীপুর জেলায় গঠিত তদন্ত কমিটির প্রধান করা হয়েছে অতিরিক্ত পুলিশ সুপার মোঃ হাসানুজ্জামানকে। সদস্য হিসেবে রয়েছেন, সদর সার্কেল এএসপি কাজী হেলাল উদ্দিন এবং জেলা গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের ইন্সপেক্টর মনিরুল ইসলাম।
এর আগে দুপুরে পুলিশ সদর দফতরে এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে পুলিশ মহাপরিদর্শক হাসান মাহমুদ খন্দকার বলেন, সরকারকে বেকায়দায় ফেলতে কোন পুলিশ সদস্য উস্কানিমূলকভাবে গুলি চালিয়েছে কি-না তা খতিয়ে দেখা হচ্ছে। নিরপেক্ষ তদন্তে অবশ্যই সত্য বের হবে। গণমিছিলকারীদের হামলায় বেশ কিছু পুলিশ গুরুতর আহত হয়েছেন। পুলিশ গণতান্ত্রিক সহিষ্ণুতা দেখিয়েছে বলেই আইনশৃক্সখলা বাহিনীর সদস্য আহত হয়েছেন। পুলিশের ঘটনা পুলিশ তদন্ত করলেও তা নিরপেক্ষতার সঙ্গে করা হবে। কোন প্রকার পক্ষপাতিত্বের সুযোগ নেই। এটি প্রাথমিক পর্যায়ের তদন্ত কমিটি। প্রয়োজনে আরও কমিটি গঠন করা হবে।
আইজিপি আরও জানান, গণমিছিলে সর্বোচ্চ নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করতে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা নেয়া হয়েছে। পুলিশ বিএনপির গণতান্ত্রিক কর্মসূচীতে বাধা দিচ্ছে বলে যে অভিযোগ করা হয়েছে তা ভিত্তিহীন। পুলিশ কোন গণতান্ত্রিক কর্মসূচীতে বাধা দেয় না। বরং সহযোগিতা করে। পুলিশ নিরপেক্ষতা হারায়নি। পুলিশের ওপর অর্পিত দায়িত্ব পুলিশ শতভাগ সুষ্ঠু ও সঠিকভাবে পালন করে যাচ্ছে। পুলিশ বাহিনী গণতান্ত্রিক আদর্শে উদ্বুদ্ধ হয়ে কাজ করছে। বিরোধী দলের ইতোপূর্বেকার রোডমার্চসহ সব কর্মসূচীতে সহনশীলতার সঙ্গে কাজ করেছে পুলিশ বাহিনী।

There were lots of agitations , violences on the street done by the opposition during the last three yrs. of their issueless movement. Even in broad day light Jamat-Shibir snached arms from the police ! But police and other security forces showed utmost tolerances and did not fire a single bullet . Howcome in less scenario of violences in Chandpur and Lakkhipur, four persons were shot dead ? It looks like SABOTAGE ! The opposition badly needs some dead bodies to fulfil their dirty politics.

May be some more deadly, untowards incidents will occur in BNP rally led by Khaleda Zia ! Surprisingly, the end point of the rally is in MAGBAZAR near the house of Golam Azam !

This is really unfortunate what Jamat/BNP is doing with the border issues. They are concocting stories, altering/fabricating online videos/photos for the purpose of anti-Indian campaign. This is injecting unnecessary doubts in many real stories, like the Felani-story. The border issue has turned into a "Crying Wolf" situation.

It was wrong what BSF did. That's why, as per Mohiuddin Anwar (BNP/Jamat), this incident has been investigated, and the BSF officer involved has been punished. At the same time, we have to recognize that - what Felani and her parents did was also wrong. But, her offense did not fit the punishment. That's why the BSF officer got punished.

Now, using the word 'friendship' to define a state-to-state relationship is not quite appropriate. State-to-state relationship is guided by mutual interest; as a result, it cannot be called a friendship. Friendship is based on selfless deeds. Therefore, to be exact, we have to analyze the border issue considering the interest of both sides. Otherwise, it will be sentimental analysis only.

The fact is I do not know what triggered the killing of the little girl, neither do you. I want to know more about it, before I pass my verdict on this unfortunate incident. That's why I expressed my skeptic views only. You are not saying much about it also. I watched those videos. It's a very sad story, if it's true. But, emotional discussions will not bring a solution to our border issue. What you said is an outburst of your emotion, which may bring lots of applause, but no solution. I want a practical solution to our border situation, not a sentimental analysis.

The hard fact is - if you go across the border in India, especially West Bengal, and live there in the border areas for a few days, you will hear many horror stories about border infiltration and criminal activities. People I know tell me that - they secure their cows with chains and padlocks at night. Even then, they find that many of them are gone in the morning. This is due to lucrative cattle-trade market in Bangladesh. Varieties of such illegal trades are going on daily across the border. Indian authority, especially - West Bengal government, even put barbed-wire fences to stop it. My guess is - BSFs must be under tremendous pressure to stop these illegal trades also. By saying this - I am not condoning the killing of the little girl.

You said India is behaving like a big-brother. The very same complain I also hear from many Canadians and South Americans about USA; I also hear the same complain from Tibetans about China. That's the reality.

No one should expect to get flowers for crossing borders. Having said that, no civilized nation shoots unarmed civilians. A young Bangladeshi girl from village is not a threat for India. That part should be acknowledged.

There are many Indian citizens who wants to have good relationship with Bangladesh and I have seen it in many occasions. There are many Pakistani citizens who want to have good relations with Bangladesh as well. However we have a large border with India and none with Pakistan. It has been made obvious even the Indian PM was unable to make any dent to very racist bureaucrats from India who wanted to punish "Muslim" Majority Bangladeshis for petty crime like border crossing. Life in India is not much better than Bangladesh and over centuries people crossed rivers to look for a living. Last two decades Bangladesh witnessed huge upward trend in quality of life. So today most people who need a job can get one in Bangladesh without crossing border. Historically people of Jolpaiguri had great relations with people of Panchagarch. People of Tripura had with Comilla. People of Assam had with Shylet. So there are many families close to border who have family members who live in India or Bangladesh. It makes me sad that, stupid bureaucrats from India do not show any understanding of this historical facts.

India is not engaged in any type of war with BD. So why India send most BSF guards who were posted in Kashmir to guard border with Bangladesh? They don't trust Bangla speaking guards to guard the border with Bangladesh. So failure to pay "Bribe" can be fatal. Kashmir is in many ways an active war zone. Historically BD villagers have had excellent relations with people of Indian states (Like Tripura, West Bengal etc), so what could have been achieved with bamboo sticks, India uses bullets for that task!!

One does not have to be a Pakistani lover to question India's ideas in this case. In fact Bangladeshis in different times went to both Indians and Pakistanis with open arms offering friendship/brotherhood but were abused by both countries in different times. Any Bangladeshis who deny this "Plain truth" can be labeled as "Rajakars". During 71 Pakistanis did not spare farmers, small shop owners, innocent Hindus and today India does not show any verifiable willingness to correct their mistakes (Of killing unarmed civilians) for many years. Despite many assurances from top level, when it comes to Bangladesh, we are pretty much an "After thought" for these arrogant nations.

(Now a little self-criticism) Still I cannot put 100% blame on them for acting like it. Unlike any civilized nation on the face of the earth we are willing to sell our dignity to either Indians or Pakistanis in most cases. Some people cannot see any fault of Pakistan and the others cannot find a way to ask an honest questions to Indian authority when our unarmed civilians are murdered every month like a pigeon during pigeon hunting season. It is our own fault that, we are still acting like a boy who always needs protection from a "Mother country" and do not have guts to put a stop on this.

I do not like blind haters of India or Pakistan. So I took the time and asked around people from all neighbors of India. I did not expect any "Love" from Pakistanis for Indians BUT to my surprise almost all citizens I spoke with (From Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives) expressed their disapproval of India for trying to play "Big brother" in this region. Most people of Bangladesh are not automatically anti_Indians but very stupid Indian policies towards Bangladesh FORCED them to act like anti-Indians.

The level of discrimination is so obvious and huge that, it will take many posts to list them. Yesterday I read West Bengal PM "Didi Momota" (She is known as didi to most of her followers) did not approve of enclave exchanges with Bangladesh. "Momotabihin momota" is harsher than cruel Delhi bureaucrats when it comes to Bangladesh. Hopeless idiots among us still struggles to find a way to lend their supports to such people who want to steal our dignity from us!!

Like most Bangladeshis I will always have some extra affection for all Bangla speaking people all over the world. Saurov Ganguly will always have some extra support for being a Bangali, Still I hope as a group we learn have some decency and respect for our own people for a change. Some of the posts from blind Pakistani lovers and blind India lovers makes me sick!!

We owe it to hundreds of thousands of "Shaheeds" who laid their lives to free us from regional masters. It would be very ungrateful of us if we fail to put our country first over our biases on local politics. it is important that we start acting like Bangladeshis for a change? Other wise what is the point of having a free country????

I feel Indian lost many opportunities to be friendly with Bangladesh and will review it's failed policies and take necessary measure to fix it before it is too late.

The function of a border guard is to protect the border from illegal intrusion. Anything can happen when someone tries to cross the border illegally. I am a doubter, I admit; I doubt everything. So, I think that recent video of border-beating and the picture of the dead well-dressed little girl at the Bangladesh-India border need some scrutiny. How did she get killed? Did somebody hung her dead body at the fence for pictures? If not, why she wanted to cross the border. Are they part of an organized black-market ring? Or, were they innocent victims of a setup by some vested interest groups for obtaining political talking-points? How did they acquire those images if these incidents occurred on the other side of the border? Anybody knows?

If these incidents were not due to a border-intrusion by BSF, I agree with you on the point that - whatever happens at the border involving illegal border crossings should have no bearing on the relationship between the two neighboring countries.

So many killings happen in Mexican Border but friendship between Mexico and USA has never been to breaking point, The Mexicans, natural resources rich , but mostly poor because of their bad governments, poor Mexicans cross the border illegally knowing full well that it is illegal and border police may kill most of the time if attempt goes wrong any time. Like our Bangladesh , we are very poor for our bad and corrupted governments. I know the best brain surgeon, it was in Readers' Digest Article, of Johns Hopkins crossed the border 7 times while he was a teen ager, police put him back 6 times because he surrendered and was arrested, he used to pick ripe red tomatoes as a farm worker boy, went to school did very well and became a brain surgeon, now he says pick up red tomato like brain tumour from his patients' brains; he spends at least 25% of his time and money volunteering and helping other poor kids irrespective of ethnicities to go to school and for their education

Police asked to withdraw textbook for 'distorting history'

The High Court directed the inspector general of police on Sunday to withdraw a textbook from markets, libraries, students and individuals in 15 days as it stated Ziaur Rahman as declarer of the country's independence,.

It also asked the IGP to immediately stop publication of the textbook named 'Pragati Nimno Madhyamik Bangla Byakaron o Rochona'.

The book published for Class VII and VIII students stated that patriot Maj Gen Ziaur Rahman declared the country's independence from Chittagong Betar Kendra on March 26, 1971.

In another page of the book, it has been written that Ziaur Rahman declared independence of the country on behalf of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 27 on the same year from Kalurghat Betar Kendra (radio centre) in Chittagong.

The HC on Sunday also summoned Ratan Siddique, writer of the book, and four others to appear before it on Thursday to explain why they have named Ziaur Rahman as the declarer of independence.

The four others are: The chairman of National Curriculum and Textbook Board, publisher of the book Md Tofazzal Hossain and co-editors Dr Shahid Uddin Ahmed and Dr Mohammad Abdul Jalil.

The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Salim came up with the order following a writ petition filed on Sunday by Anamul Haque, a freedom fighter, citing that the history of the country's independence has been distorted by the statements.

Mr. A. Q. Rahman thinks that his religion is perfect is spite of the fact that it does not abolish or condemn slavery.

Now let me ask the same question to everyone who identifies himself/herself as a Muslim: is it enough for a civilized world to treat the slaves fairly, to consider freeing a slave to be good deed, and to provide some rewards for freeing a slave?

Hopefully, I will comment more on the subject after hearing from some other Muslims.

I had already read these two verses, and a few more, in the Koran, and commented that "the religion asks its followers to treat slaves with fairness, and considers freeing a slave to be a good deed." Mr. Q. A. Rahman said the same thing below, diluting it in a full page of gibberish.

Let me comment here on Mr. Mustafizur Rahman's statement also. He wrote "Rewards for freeing a slave are numerous in Hadith." Let me just trust that he read the Hadith and knows this for a fact.

Having agreed with both the Rahmans, let me ask them; is it adequate for a civilized world to treat the slaves fairly, to consider freeing a slave to be good deed, and to provide some rewards for freeing a slave?

To me, there is no such thing as "treating a slave fairly." Once you brand someone as a slave, you are already too unfair to him/her. Reward and praise for freeing a slave is not enough for a decent world; we needed abolition of slavery. Today slavery is prohibited in all the respectable societies and countries of the world. As the human civilization progresses, I have no doubt, more and more of the unfairness and injustices will be gone from the world.

As for religions, the bottom line is, if an honest reading of your religious books allows you to respect the religion, please do so. But do not claim it to be perfect, as you should be able to see from this particular example.

Mamun got $10,000 to win Hawa Bhaban nod

A Canadian magazine revealed last August that Niko, a company of that country, had paid half a million dollars to Hawa Bhaban men to get a controversial joint venture deal with Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration & Production Company Limited (Bapex) in 2003.

Hawa Bhaban used to be the political office of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia who was also the prime minister back then, but it doubled as an alternative power centre revolving around her elder son Tarique Rahman. One of Tarique's close friends is Giasuddin Al Mamun, who became quite influential and wealthy during the last BNP-led regime.

The ROB Magazine -- a supplement of one of the leading Canadian dailies Globe & Mail -- quoting Canadian police records of Mamun's statements, said initially Niko offered him a retainer of US$10,000 to make the deal successful.

But Mamun ultimately failed to make the deal happen on his own. The report "Niko Resources: Ottawa's corruption test case" by reporter Greg McArthur, published on August 26, 2011 states, "As a mere buddy of the Prime Minister's son, there was only so much he could do. 'My power is 50%,' he said."

Businessman Selim Bhuiyan, who separately gave confessional statements to a court in Dhaka, said Niko deposited more than half a million US dollars in his bank account. He dispersed some of the money to people close to the then prime minister Khaleda Zia -- including Mamun.

Selim Bhuiyan is an old family friend of Mamun and as Mamun is a close friend of Tarique, Bhuiyan enjoyed access to the inner circle of the BNP-led government.

A portion of the payment, Bhuiyan believed, would go to the prime minister's son. AKM Mosharraf Hossain, the then state minister for energy, received a total of $1,02,000, Bhuiyan alleged in his confession.

The magazine however notes that Bhuiyan later claimed he confessed under the duress of torture.

The Daily Star has obtained the relevant part of Bhuiyan's confessional statement made before Metropolitan Court Magistrate Mohammad Waliul Islam on January 15, 2008.

In that statement Bhuiyan said sometime in 2002 Mamun came to his office along with the then Niko Bangladesh Vice-president Kashem Sharif to help the company strike the joint venture deal. Kashem Sharif promised them financial benefits and left Bangladesh sometimes after the Niko deal was signed.

Later, Bhuiyan along with Mamun went to AKM Mosharraf Hossain and sought his cooperation.

Ever since, Bhuiyan and Mamun regularly maintained contact with Mosharraf seeking progress report on the Niko deal. Finally in late 2003 the Bapex-Niko joint venture agreement was signed.

Afterwards, Niko official Kashem Sharif deposited in parts a total of three crore taka (equivalent to half a million dollars) in Bhuiyan's bank account of Standard Chartered Bank in Gulshan.

From this deposit, Bhuiyan gave Mamun Tk 80 lakh through a pay order, and later another

one crore taka in cash and cheques. Mosharraf was given Tk 60 lakh from that same account while Bhuiyan kept the remaining Tk 60 lakh as his own lobbying fee.

"The confession was extracted under duress," Selim Bhuiyan told The Daily Star recently following the publication of the Globe and Mail report, "I confessed what I had been asked to confess. I did not have a choice at that time," he said.

He denied that Niko ever gave him any money. He, however, admitted that he travelled to Canada along with AKM Mosharraf Hossain. "I accompanied the minister and knew that the tour was approved by the government. I did not know who financed the tour," he said.

Replying to another question about why he was implicated in the Niko case, he said, "I actually don't understand why they have done this to me. It might be because I had close relation with the minister."

He maintained that Mosharraf should file a case against Niko for making such a false statement.

Although Bhuiyan now denies the content of his own statement, a government investigation in early 2008 found that he maintained a Standard Chartered Bank account no 18-1681125-01, which was Grindlays Bank back in 2004 (and his savings account no was 7623994). From this account, Bhuiyan on January 7, 2004 issued a pay order (number 428822) of Tk 1.08 crore to Mamun's current account no 7447699 (presently 01-1353592-01) in the same bank.

When Bhuiyan was contacted over the phone again to clarify how the 2008 investigation found such a transaction, he disconnected the call and refrained from receiving further calls from The Daily Star. The Daily Star finally sent him an SMS asking him to clarify his position on this matter in early November last year. But he did not reply.

The Daily Star provided Mamun's lawyer Barrister Fakhrul Islam with the Globe and Mail report along with four questions. On the question of Mamun's interview with the Canadian police, he said, "I will not say anything about the interview. You should ask Mamun."

Mamun is presently serving a jail term of 23 years in three cases.

Fakhrul Islam said he had nothing to say about Mamun's references in Selim Bhuiyan's confessional statements. He also declined to answer questions about whether Mamun had been given a $10,000 retainer or if Mamun had shared with his friends the money he had received from Niko.

Mosharraf denied taking any financial benefit, including a sport utility vehicle worth one crore taka, to favour Niko with a deal. "I could have taken money if I had wished to take benefit from Niko. Why should I take a car? The car was not given to me. It was registered in the name of Bapex as it was a joint venture between Bapex and Niko. The car was given to Bapex. I have never seen the car, let alone using it."

But back in 2005, Mosharraf had to resign from his position following publication of news that he had received the vehicle.

On the question of his relationship with Selim Bhuiyan, Mosharraf said, "It is completely a personal relationship. We are related not by any business involvement or matters that earn money. We know each other from before I began my career as a politician. We came to know each other through our social activities like organising Mohammedan Sporting Club."

On the question of his visit to Calgary, accompanied by Selim Bhuiyan, at Niko's expense, he answered, "I visited Calgary following invitation from the then Canadian government. Niko being a Canadian company was involved in the process. A Canadian minister who also had visited Bangladesh earlier was a part of it. The travel expenses were borne by the Canadian government. Selim Bhuiyan accompanied me during the visit as my younger brother. He did not have any involvement in making the deal. He travelled with me to help me. I, however, don't know who bore his travel expenses."

Mosharraf was told that according to Selim Bhuiyan's confessional statement, Mosharraf had received $1,02,000 for ensuring the joint venture agreement, and that money was given by Niko's Kashem Sharif to Selim, who then disbursed the money to different beneficiaries. He replied, "I know nothing about this. This is the first time I have come to know about such an allegation. I have to submit wealth statement to the government every year, and the government evaluates the statement routinely. Had there been any discrepancy between the actual wealth and my wealth statement, it would have been discovered by government investigators long ago. There is no such allegation from the government against me. It is an allegation made-up by the newspapers."

Mosharraf claimed, "The joint venture agreement had been signed during the previous tenure of the Awami League government, before I came to power. I did not sign any deal. We just continued the agreement."

But the deal was actually signed in 2003 when he was the state minister for energy.

The Globe and Mail report further said the Canadian court did not try Niko for bribing these people because gathering evidence in Bangladesh was a challenge, getting witnesses or bringing Bangladeshi witnesses before a Canadian court was also another big challenge.

The magazine also pointed finger at Canadian liberal senator Mac Herb for unethically taking money and other facilities from Niko to lobby for the company in Bangladesh.

It reported that Niko first tried to get into the Bangladeshi energy sector in the late 1990s -- but failed. It got a second chance when the BNP-led alliance government took over power in 2001. Niko bagged the deal in 2003.

But by 2005, Niko's good luck ended amid two rounds of blowouts in Tengratila while drilling an exploratory well. After the first blowout, the then state minister for energy AKM Mosharraf Hossain received a new Land Cruiser as a gift from Niko. For this fact alone Niko was found guilty of corruption in Canada.

EXCERPTS FROM THE GLOBE AND MAIL'S MAGAZINE REPORTThe magazine reports, "Less than two weeks after he received Niko's gift in May, 2005, Hossain checked into a Calgary hotel to attend an oil and gas exposition. Accompanying him was his friend, a man he described as his 'brother', Selim Bhuiyan. At the time, Bhuiyan was the manager [president] of the Dhaka Club, an exclusive hangout for the city's elites. The job immersed him in the milieu surrounding the Prime Minister's son."

"Niko paid for the men's flights and their rooms, as well as subsequent side trips Hossain made to New York and Chicago to visit family. However, the company's largesse never had an impact on his decision-making, Hossain insists."

After a changeover in the country's political scene, an army-backed caretaker government arrested Mosharraf and many of Tarique Rahman's associates. Many confessions came out as a result of these arrests -- some of those were linked to Niko.

In November 2008, the Canadian government sent two Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officials to interrogate Giasuddin Al Mamun, who was in prison on graft charges.

The magazine reports that it was a tense time on November 1, 2008 in Dhaka. "Officially, al Mamun had been found guilty of weapons possession. Unofficially, he was guilty of being friends with Tarique Rahman."

"Al Mamun was delivered to a nondescript house in an affluent neighbourhood. He could be forgiven for thinking that whatever waited for him inside would be deeply unpleasant. Instead, he was greeted by two affable, middle-aged Canadians with buzz cuts and dark suits."

"The one with the big smile was Corporal Lloyd Schoepp, an RCMP officer who had quit a career as a retail banker in Banff to pursue a lifelong dream of being a cop. The other, Corporal Kevin Duggan, was an expert in recovering the illicit profits from drug dealing."

"Over the next two days, with breaks for rest and Domino's pizza, al Mamun gave the RCMP officers a crash course in Third World corruption."

"Al Mamun's candid interviews with the Mounties, as well as other evidence gathered by the RCMP during their trip to Dhaka, have been detailed in a 72-page affidavit filed in Alberta court by Corporal Duggan."

An edited version of the police officer's sworn statement was later released.

"Al Mamun told the police officers that his introduction to Niko came in 2002 when someone --whose name has been redacted from the affidavit -- dangled an offer of $1 million if al Mamun could land drilling rights for the Canadian company. As an appetizer, al Mamun said he was given a retainer of about $10,000. But he was ultimately unable to make the deal happen on his own. As a mere buddy of the Prime Minister's son, there was only so much he could do. 'My power is 50%,' he said."

"During Schoepp and Duggan's time in Dhaka, the military handed over all documents requested by the Mounties, including a signed confession made by Selim Bhuiyan -- the same social-club manager who travelled with Minister Hossain to Calgary, at Niko's expense, for the energy exposition."

Bhuiyan "made an admission similar to al Mamun's: Someone…offered him more than $1 million if he successfully helped land the gas fields for Niko."

"After Niko was handed drilling rights, more than $500,000 (U.S.) appeared in Bhuiyan's bank account, the confession stated. From there, Bhuiyan said he dispersed some of the money to the cast of characters surrounding Prime Minister Khaleda Zia -- including al Mamun. A portion of the payment, Bhuiyan believed, would go to al Mamun's friend, the Prime Minister's son. Hossain, the former minister who would not take 'a single pie' from anyone, received a total of $102,000, the confession alleged."

I agree with almost everything that Mr. Chakrabarty has written below.

Just one clarification: I wrote earlier, "But I certainly support people who point out that much of the 'wisdom' in the religious books are either plain stupidity or too inadequate for a civilized world." The phrase "much of" is not the same as "all of."

I also do not think that we have nothing to learn from the history of the human civilizations. Our modern thinking is due to the progresses made by generations of humans. If we can appreciate the progresses, discard the faults, and keep working on improving the rights of all humans, we would be in the right track.

Bain has used the two adjectives "primitive" and "uncivilized" in a limited sense in the context of religion. Think about the "satidaha pratha". Although the custom was not very old and not widely practiced, it was unquestionably primitive and uncivilized. It is only a primitive mind that can think about forcing the traumatized widow of a dead man to walk onto the pyre of her husband. It used to be done in the name of religion. Reason was economic but religion justified it. Now it is not only illegal, we can hardly find a person now who will criticize the "sutti" abolition. This is civilized behavior. If we protest the death of a woman by stoning for her alleged adultery, that will also be a civilized behavior. Christians used to burn women who were allegedly visited by satan. We do not hear this kind of story any more. We should have the spirits, at least in many cases, to judge things in the light of modern thinking and setting aside religions for a moment. That is urgently required for building a civil society.
Aristotle believed that a slave was a living tool. We had to wait for about 900 years to see that the prophet of a religion is "categorically" talking about a slave and making appeal to his followers to treat a slave with dignity and even free him if possible. That testifies to the great progress of a human mind. I am sure between Aristotle and Muhammed, there were teachings here and there for treating slaves as human beings. I have emphasized on the word "categorically". If we treat Muhammed as a human being, we can explain why he failed to see too far into the future and why he did not abolish slavery right away. In this way we can do better justice to him.
With reference to pyramid and muslin, even if they are still riddles for the "rocket scientists", we have to admit the fact that science and technology are now much more superior. We do not need any proof to be convinced why it is true. Modern science and technology will be able to replicate the largest pyramid much more efficiently without any human loss.
Despite being an essential element in building a civilized society, advancement in science and technology does not guarantee that a society is more civilized. Values, norms, arts, literature, culture, etc. determine how civilized we are. Can we call ourselves civilized if we support the barbaric act of destroying two cities packed with innocent people? Obviously not. We can give many more examples of uncivilized acts from the contemporary history of the world. These have been done and are still being done in the name of nationalism, ideology, and religion. There is a flip side too. We see libertarians, human- and animal-rights organizations, great personalities, watch dogs, and even liberal versions of religious groups or cults continuously making appeal to the state machinery, ideologues, and religious leaders to act in a civilized manner. And their voice is heard sometimes. This means that we are in general now much more enlightened and our ethical and moral values are also high.
Human societies are now much more complex. This has given rise to various forms of arts, literature, and philosophy, and metaphysics. Cubism, magical realism, pragmatism, post-modernism, existentialism, etc. were unheard of even a few centuries ago. We have to admit the advancement in all these sectors. But this also does not mean that we have nothing to learn from arts, literature, philosophy, metaphysics, religion, etc. that were created long ago. We owe many things to the old ideas. "Know thyself" (Aristotle and Vedanta), Homer, Buddha, Greek plays, epics, just to mention a few, are still not only quoted, are still inspirations for great creative writings, arts, and sculpture. Mother and motherland are superior to heaven. Would you guess that it has been taken from Ramayana? The heaven is under the feet of the mother. Guess where you can find it. Many more similar ideas can be quoted. How can they be primitive or uncivilized?

What is it that you so disdainfully categorize as "primitive wisdoms "? Todays scientists are stilled baffled as to how the Pharaohs using your "primitive wisdoms " built those pyramids centuries ago. There are numerous examples strewn around the world which still marvels todays rocket scientists as to how those people with "primitive wisdoms " built those. Same with Islam. The Prophet of Islam could foresee, of course with Allah's guidance, about the things to come. That is why he is revered as a great reformer. It is a different thing that some, who profess to follow him have actually deviated from path he showed. But one should not brush him off as having "primitive wisdom ".

It is only when one believes that man evolved from primates that he classifies our older generations as having "primitive wisdom ". But it is far from truth. They were far more intelligent than us in many aspects. Because they DID NOT evolve from primates. They were created as humans. Only a few centuries back in the subcontinent weavers spun muslin of such quality on simple (compared to todays) machines using "primitive wisdom " that even today textile manufacturers find it difficult to replicate!

Another term you use to show your contempt of religions is "civilized world ". You think that people centuries ago were not civilized? Only todays generation is living in a "civilized world "? If you do, then you will be making a big mistake in your premise.

I read the book "Lajja" by Taslima Nasrin about seventeen years ago. From that reading, what I remembered was that the book was like a documentary on discrimination, hatred and atrocities against the Hindus of East Bengal as a part of Pakistan and later as most of Bangladesh. The comments below by Farida Majid, under the thread "Rushdie cancels visit, angry authors read Satanic Verses", prompted me to read the book again and make the comments appended below (under that thread).

Before I talk more about this book, let me address some recent comments on the same thread by Dr. Kamal Das and Dr. Jiten Roy.

KDas: "Only time I criticize any religion is when a religionist tries to impose his 'truth' on me."

SB: One of my other reasons for not criticizing the religious books is that I do want to waste too much time reading and arguing about those primitive wisdoms. But I certainly support people who point out that much of the 'wisdom' in the religious books are either plain stupidity or too inadequate for a civilized world. I think slowly but surely the world is getting out of the non-senses of religions. The countries and communities that are more into those primitive truths and wisdoms are clearly falling behind.

JRoy: "For those who do not want to be a slave - let them go free. God will deal with them. OK?"

SB: I also say to the believers, if you really believe that your God (Allah, Bhagaban, whatever) is almighty, does it make any sense for you to think that he would need your help in establishing his rules/laws/states in this world? Isn't your religious book itself downgrading your almighty by doubting his power in the way of asking for help from the followers, often in the form of criminal acts? I say, just be good, your religion teaches you so or not.

Now a bit about "Lajja" and Ms. Majid's comments:

Anyone who has a basic education in Bangla would see that Lajja talks about the shame of Bangladesh in the form of widespread discrimination, hatred and atrocities against the Hindus. Even the least educated section of Bangladeshis (the semi-literate mullahs) could see that. I was shocked that Ms. Majid found the "central message is a cowardly whimper (the Hindu hero managing to slap a Muslim street prostitute as his climactic act of protest!)."

While the story often brings up a cowardly Hindu young man who does not take any responsibility for his old parents and the family, he is neither a hero nor the focus of the book. The book is all about how pathetic the record of Bangladesh is on how it treats its Hindus, and about the lingering one-sided violence of Muslim criminals on the innocent and non-violent Hindus.

There is not even a single word of condemnation or ridicule against Islam in the book. I do not think even the die-hard mullah would find it blasphemous against Islam. To ban this book in Bangladesh would make sense only if the country denied the truth of the prolonged injustice against the Hindus there. To ban this book in West Bengal would make sense only if the state were to appease the criminal segment of the Muslims in the state. Shame on both!!

The present Awami league government is making some progress, even when it is unable or unwilling to delete 'bismillah' and 'state religion' from the constitution. I see a thin ray of hope for a civilized Bangladesh vis-à-vis treating all its citizens, irrespective of religious affiliations, with respect. It is only a thin ray of hope; Bangladesh has a long way to go.

What is 'middle-class concerns on women's issues'?

Taslima Nasrin could be the culprit behind increasing 'hizabization' of women in Bangladesh, what an absurd argument! I can understand that the Jamati's would resist any movement that advocates women's rights. One way to suppress such movements would be to hizabize more women. If Bangladesh fell for that, it was because the country did not have enough educated people to advocate women's rights, not because the women's rights activists were wrong or imperfect in executing their movement.

I do not think a truly secular person would downplay "Lajja" by branding it 'a badly written account of Hindu persecution in Bangladesh'. 'Badly written' and 'badly executed' are the kind of excuses that are made by people who do not wish to support the fight against the persecution in question. It would also be pretty uneducated of anyone reading the book (Lajja) and finding that the 'central message' was a cowardly whimper of the Hindu hero managing to slap a Muslim street prostitute as his climactic act of protest.

I agree with Ms. Majid on one point. A Hindu should not criticize Islam (or any other non-Hindu religion), and a Muslim should not criticize Hinduism (or any other non-Islamic religion). The religious fools need to see the silliness in their own religions. To be a neutral critique of religions, one should promote himself/herself to a Human first. I do not identify myself in terms of any religion. However, I still avoid picking up a religious book and trying to find faults in it. That is because it is obvious that a thousand years back people were less civilized, and knew less. We can not go back in time to fix anything; it is better to focus on recent and current hatred and injustices.

Talking about Taslima Nasrin's successes with her narcissism, are we feeling bad that our own narcissism did not give us such successes? I think we should control our personal attacks on people who are writing in this forum as well on people who are not writing in this forum.

          Taslima was a good columnist. I used to be a fan, though i often found her to be a bit too confined to her middle-class concerns on women's issues. I supported her views when she blamed religious beliefs, customs and other superstitions for the plight of women in our society.

           But in 1993, when confronted by the fundamentalists, I was shocked by the way she just chickened out. Her cowardice was visible in her body language (coy looks and min-min voice) and the stupidity of repeating over and over again the same dumb, unexamined Bangla translations of the Qur'an and calling them "religion" was simply stupefying! How can anybody be so scared to lose basic cultural sense, or an idea of what political game was being played? Her narcissism was then as now is too blatant.

             She did more harm to women's ongoing movements in Bangladesh by emboldening the Jamaati factions. Almost every woman activist I've met in the field says so. Today there are more hijabized women in BD than they were in 1993 and Taslima's fiasco in 1993 is partly to blame.

            As an old communalism combatant I can tell you that Taslima is just another rotten piece of wooden chip in the fire of communalism. I work with a team of communalism combatants and none of us singles out a particular religion and attacks it indiscriminately. Even the die-hard atheists and religion-haters amongst us has learned (the hard way) not to pick on "religion" as the root cause of communalism despite the fact that religion is the main vehicle of their hate-mongering machine.

Her novelette 'Lajja' is a badly written account of Hindu persecution in Bangladesh in the sense that its central message is a cowardly whimper (the Hindu hero managing to slap a Muslim street prostitute as his climactic act of protest!). Had Taslima really cared about humanity the message could have been bolder in that novel, and more politically or even artistically meaningful in sensitizing us about the root causes of communalism.

           Just as I, a Muslim, would not go on and on about the flaw in Hinduism regarding its caste system, my Hindu or Christian team-mates are discouraged from talking about 'jehadism' as a part of Islam and as if every ordinary Indian or Bangladeshi Muslim lives by it.

             Combating communalism and religious fundamentalism is not as easy as it seems superficially. It is a rough ride and it gets rougher the more deeply you get involved. It requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of our subcontinental history and culture.

             Taslima has done well with her narcissism, and I applaud her. But please do not call her a "champion" on women's issues or a sincere anti-communal activist. She is a sneaky, manipulative coward, the opposite of 'brave'.
