What is the point of this assinine discussion. The nitpicking and hair splitting to make some idiotic point that escapes me altogether (but them I am a renowned dumbass).

Just enjoy the game!

The rankings have nothing to do with any comment I made. An idiot can make a stupid decision on one issue and then make a stupid decision on another issue. In Bangladesh we like to keep the two issues separate – it protects our vanity. But the two issues are connected by the same stupidity and the same idiot.

I do salute our team. But what are you saying – there is no possibility that the team would have been influenced? I was talking about the possibility of influence. If you think it's impossible please just say it. While you are at it you can also deny the politicization and corruption at the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Ah. What the hell. Let's just watch the cricket.

This is indeed the 21st Century. Let me know what else you think goes on in our country that fits the 21st century. Or is it just the opening ceremony that fits a 21st Century Bangladesh? Put Sabina, Runa and Mumtaz on the stage together to sing a rousing rendition of a song that fires the soul of our people. Nah. These three are prima donnas. We'd rather they sang an Urdu song and a light pop hit.

Bryan Adams was the only real man involved in the opening ceremony. Ask the women in your family.

Don't give the crap about Felani my friend. I expect that from the head of Kuthagaon AL unit. Felani's murder is not condemnable and you insult her by pretending it is. Not a single loyalist of AL, BNP, Jamaat or the Army condemned it appropriately. You understand what this means? Can you describe in words what this means? Or is understanding cricket more important?

But you go ahead and enjoy the cricket. We have much to be proud of. From the few mosaic tiles and plastic flowers at the airport to the grammatical mistakes on huge billboards to the commercialization of our flag to adverts portraying Hasina. Did you go out and admire the lighting at night? Yeah man. One thing we love is lots of little fairy lights. Suits us.

And I can tell you that if you think that Australians, South Africans, Pakistanis (Indians and Brits too I'm sure) can be tempted by the syndicates but Bangladeshis can't be then you are just another delusional patriot who accepts everything and hopes for the best.

All does look yellow to jaundiced eyes. But many would always rather talk about the eyes than the jaundice. It's too comfortable.

Enjoy the cricket. Go out and join the missil when Bangladesh beat Ireland. Ah! But the ranking of Ireland is not so important is it.

There is more to patriotism than supporting the national team.

Are you enjoying the beautification of Dhaka? What about the crappification of Dhaka in a few days?

Enjoy your few days of cricket. Felani's ghost can wait. Let me know how long you think she will have to wait for justice. Till after the cricket?

Govt lets Ershad off the hook

It now considers radar graft case against him politically motivated, decides to withdraw 75 more case

A government committee yesterday decided to withdraw 76 more "politically motivated" cases including the much-talked-about radar purchase graft case filed against Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad.

The High Court cleared the way for trial of the radar purchase case on August 8, 2006 after proceedings of the case had been stayed for a long time.Different quarters expressed concern over the decision saying the case should be settled in the court as the HC cleared the way for trial.

The decision was taken at the 26th meeting of the government committee on withdrawal of cases filed for "harassing" political leaders during the BNP-Jamaat and immediate past caretaker government rule.

The now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption filed the case against Ershad and four others with Cantonment police on May 4, 1992.Trial of the case filed 18 years ago against former president Ershad and three others resurfaced on November 2 last year with deposition of the complainant.Abdus Sattar Sarkar, an official of the Bureau, pressed charges against Ershad and four others on October 27, 1994, showing 38 people as prosecution witnesses.

According to the prosecution, Ershad in collusion with others had allegedly caused a loss of Tk 64.04 crore to the state exchequer by purchasing radars from the US instead of France for the air force while he was in power.

The court framed charges against Ershad and three others on August 12, 1995.But the government had withdrawn charge against another accused Shahazad Ali, a director of United Traders Ltd.

Ershad was accused in 21 cases including several graft cases after he was ousted from power in 1990.He has so far been acquitted and discharged from 18 cases as the prosecution failed to prove the charges brought against him.
Three cases including the radar purchase graft case are under trial.

Contacted, Transparency International Bangladesh Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman told The Daily Star as the HC had cleared the way for trial of the radar purchase case, it should be settled in the court."Why should the government settle graft cases off the court? Can't the court detect which case was filed with political motivation?" Iftekharuzzaman asked. The government is dropping graft cases considering these politically motivated, he said, adding, such practice is encouraging impunity culture.

Briefing newspersons after the meeting at the home ministry, State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam, who heads the government committee, said "A total of 863 cases were placed before them yesterday. The committee has suggested withdrawal of 76 cases."

He added they rejected 29 cases after scrutiny of the case references, as they found those cases were not filed to harass anyone. He said 759 more cases, suggested by the district level committees, will be placed before the next meeting of the committee.Asked why the "sensational" radar graft case was suggested to be dropped, the state minister said the committee took the decision after analysing the case references meticulously.

The committee in the last meeting in January decided not to entertain any graft cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, but the decision was changed later, meeting sources said.Qamrul said they would consider eight to ten more graft cases apart from the radar case.

Asked, the minister said they have so far recommended withdrawal of 6,853 out of over 10,000 cases and there might be a scope of making mistakes in the process thanks to the huge number. He said if they notice any such mistakes, they would reconsider the concerned case references. Citing an example, he mentioned the name of top-listed criminal Sahadat, whose case was recommended for withdrawal but later the decision was cancelled.

He said the BNP-led four-party alliance dropped 74,000 cases on grounds that those were filed with political motivation.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Prayer practice of majority Bangladeshis

Mr Akbar is living in a fools' paradise. Why don't you change your religion (if you have any), go to India and practice what was shown by the Grameen Phone. Sorry it is not my religious practice. I do not 'Pranam'  the Dadas. I say Assalamualaikum.

Very well said.
This is an unnecessary issue raised by a very mean person. I don't know if there is any official way to pray in Bangladesh.

It is this evil thing called "religious identity" -- not Religion itself -- that is the founding stone of COMMUNALISM.

The British colonial Administration started counting the people of this land by their religous identities.  Our society, politics or economy before the advent of the British did not function around religious identities of the populace.  God knows that there are many other ways of classifying people.  Language and culture are better and bigger identifiers, each religion being a contributor to our overall culture.

My comments:
The world turns and so is the stories behind the story of War Criminals in Bangladesh. The same music is now coming off differently in the pages of history of our time while 165 million people have still been pushing their lucks. Chasing the Mission and Vision of our freedom in 1971 have lost its momentum, as if at birth; and that the important strategic initiatives taken by our founding father Mujib in 1974 ..........................
have disgracefully been thrown into the middle of the Ocean!

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************

                         End of a Bad Dream

Monday, 22 April 1974:

After five days of intense negotiations in New Delhi last week, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh signed an agreement resolving the last two major issues left over from the 1971 Indo-Pakistani war. The accord clears the way for normalization of diplomatic and economic relations among the three countries and for Bangladesh's membership in the United Nations, which until now has been vetoed by China at Pakistan's behest.

Under the terms of the agreement worked out by Foreign Ministers Kamal Hossein of Bangladesh, Swaran Singh of India and Aziz Ahmed of Pakistan, Bangladesh agreed "as an act of clemency" to drop its plans to try 195 Pakistani prisoners for war crimes. The prisoners will now be returned to Pakistan, along with the remaining 6,500 of the 90,000 P.O.W.s captured during the war and held since then in camps in India. That repatriation, begun last August, is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Bangladesh's decision to abandon the war-crimes trials was a major concession. But it had been more or less expected after Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto announced that Pakistan would recognize its breakaway eastern wing at the Lahore summit meeting of Moslem leaders in February. More surprising was Pakistan's formal acknowledgment in the agreement that the prisoners had, in Bangladesh's words, committed "war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide." The Pakistan government "condemned and deeply regretted any crimes that may have been committed."

Best Forgotten. The New Delhi accord was less precise in dealing with the fate of the 500,000 Biharis (non-Bengali Moslems) in Bangladesh. Many of the Biharis—so called because they emigrated from the Indian state of Bihar at the time of the 1947 partition—sided with the Pakistani military during the war, and for that reason face a painful future if they stay in Bangladesh. Most of them live in fear and squalor in huge refugee camps outside Dacca and other cities.

So far, Pakistan has returned about 110,000 Bengalis who were trapped in the western half of the country at the start of the war and has accepted or given entry clearance to 140,000 Biharis. Under the agreement, it pledged to accept all those who formerly lived in West Pakistan, ex-employees of the Pakistan government and members of divided families. Pakistan also pledged to review applications previously denied. That probably means that the number of Biharis accepted by Pakistan will not substantially exceed 140,000. Pakistan is reluctant to accept more for fear that they will aggravate unemployment.

In a magnanimous gesture, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ahmed gave chief credit for bringing an end to a "painful chapter" in South Asia's history to Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheik Mujibur Rahman. Later in the week, Mujib flew into New Delhi for a brief visit after two weeks of medical treatment in Moscow. Added Swaran Singh: "The trials, tribulations and conflicts of our subcontinent will become a thing of the past—something of a bad dream that is best forgotten."

[ALOCHONA] Re: FW: [Alapon] Prof Yunus under attack or Prof. Yunus exposed !!!!!!!

Farida is a nitwit.

If Grameen Bank has paid less tax than it should have then it is the fault of AL and BNP governments who have board representation. But Farida is too much of an AL diehard to hold AL accountable for anything.

If Yunus has not paid the tax that he should have then it is because neither AL nor BNP governments expected or wanted him to pay. But Farida is too much of an AL diehard to hold AL accountable for anything.

Look at Farida saying that Hasina `made a comment' about Yunus. And then questioning our conscience about it! Hasina did not make a comment. Hasina has directly and indirectly via her lackeys:

Presided over and directed the vilification of Dr Yunus
Called him a liar, a thief, a bloodsucker, a fraud, a trickster
Allowed her crass jealousy and mean mindedness to drive policy
Slapped down her Finance Minister in public on this issue
And more

But to her lackey Farida Majid – it was all just a comment.

There is a particular type of shrew that is loyal to Hasina. This one also claims to be an intellectual.

Then she goes on about Ekushey after assisting her Head Shrew in a character assassination of a Nobel Laureate.

THIS CAN ONLY HAPPEN IN BANGLADESH.

I'm no intellectual. But may God strike me down before I could be described as a Bangladeshi Intellectual. Bunch of self serving, opportunistic hypocrites. They can only survive in Bangladesh. Anywhere else they'd be treated as the village idiot.

Professor Dr. Yunus worked hard to earn this Noble Prize. Only the people of knowledge can understand this. Moulana Hazrat Jalal Uddin Rumi said, " bees know the value of a flower, a snake charmer knows the value of a snake, a noble king knows the value of a diamond. similarly a knowledgable person knows the importance of another knowledgable person." Some micro lenders are becoming loan sharks and are taking advantage of this program, which is not inline with Yunus's intentions. We should look into ways to improve the process so this does not happen, but we should not be blaming Yunus.

President Clinton is equally upset. Hope you are aware how hard he worked to see Dr.Yunus gets this award. I know people may have personal issues, but when it comes to national icon like Dr.Yunus, I thought Bangladesh shouldnt demonize countrys only Nobel Laureate."

[ALOCHONA] Fwd: Fw: Warnings and punishments for crimes and sins in Islam

------ Forwarded message ----------
From: Javed Ahmad <javedahmad@yahoo.com>
Date: Wed, Mar 2, 2011 at 3:36 PM
Subject: Fw: Warnings and punishments for crimes and sins in Islam
To: Javed Ahmad <javedahmad@yahoo.com>

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam, salaam!

I have uploaded the following article as a working paper which I would like to expand as I come across with more materials. It is now posted on my site (blog) for your reading:

56. Warnings and punishments for crimes and sins in Islam

Preface: There are many do's and don'ts in Islam. Some are stricter than the others. On this table based article I have tried to show the comparison between the punishments of some sin and crimes in an Islamic society and a secular society. The Islamic references are taken directly from Qur'an and Hadith translations to convince the Muslims as many of them are not even aware of the punishments prescribed in Islam. (March 2011).

http://javedahmad.tripod.com/islam/punishments.htm

Not too long ago I wrote an article entitled "Rise of social ills in absence of Islam", which is now available at http://bangladesh-web.com/view.php?hidRecord=318635 you are welcome to read it as well as it relates to the topic. Wassalaam.
