Isn't Mr. Chakrabarty himself a believer in 'Maharshi Muhammad', Ramkrishna, Bankim, Vivekananda, and a host of other great men who believed in miracles? The Rhodes scholar was my friend and classmate, his father was a madrasah imam. He might have carried a few beliefs from his father. Jamat-e-Islam isn't more Islamic than the Deobandis, and the former is branded heretic by the latter. Their followers do not pray together. I think, Bangladesh has more than 10% minorities. I would advise Mr. Rahman to read the biography of the prophet and the history of Islam again. He would find out that Abu Sufian wasn't as inimical to Muhammad(for many years the Meccans offered protection to Muhammad, when they didn't, he migrated to Medina) as Abu Lahab and was too powerful to be killed by a bunch of mercenaries hired to conquer Hejaj. The prophet, though he loved Hejaj more than Yathrib, preferred to go back there as he didn't really trust Abu Sufian and his community in Hejaj(Mecca). I do not think that calling Jamat-i-Islam anti-Islamic is an honest statement. They try to follow Islam by the book more than people who criticize them. People who criticize the Jamatis by calling them anti-Islam are probably trying to make a gradual change of mindset by appeasing Islamic sentiments through selective following/praising of Islam, while the goal really is to discard/de-emphasize some parts of Islam. Now let me make a few comments on Mr. Rahman's post below. Ideally, hatred, discrimination, persecution, barbaric atrocities, etc. against the religious minorities should not be a minority-majority issue. It should be a serious issue for the whole country. Unfortunately, Pakistan and Bangladesh have failed on this miserably over the last 65 years. That is why Bangladesh now has less than 10% non-Muslims, compared to more than 30% in 1947. Even today, Mr. Chakrabarty's favorite personalities such as Mr. Rahman would rather deny the facts of persecution of religious minorities in the country. I doubt if people like Mr. Rahman would have recorded the Satkhira episode as a fact if it was not talked about strongly in this forum. In any case, I am glad that Mr. Rahman has made some convincing points below. As for Mohammad forgiving some people who wanted to kill him, it is not comparable to the followers of Mohammad forgiving people who insult him. If the followers really believe in the greatness of Mohammad, they should ignore the insults by thinking that he could not be tainted so easily. They can be upset, they can think and say loudly that the insulters were ignorant fools, but they should not go on to a crime spree. I do not think it is helpful to make it a "Hindu-Muslim" issues. Obviously there were people from both religions in the drama and people from all backgrounds took part what followed the drama. First of all it was a failure of our law enforcement departments to protect these people.
Even if someone did insult prophet Muhammad (PBUH), NO ONE had any right to pick law on their own hands. As per Islamic laws, even criminals have right to defend themselves.
From the news it seems some members from minority community were framed by politicians to destroy communal harmony in our country.
I remember when some "Less intelligent Muslims" took part in some violence in various parts of the world, common Muslims were confused. Then some great scholars posed a simple question. They said, If our noble prophet (PBUH) was alive today, how do you think he would have responded? Everyone knew the answer and they just needed a reminder. In fact there were many many occasions when prophet was insulted, he forgave them or educated them about true teachings of Islam. Even when he was most powerful after amazing victory of Mecca (Return to Mecca without any bloodshed), he forgave the very people who attacked him and wished to kill him for 22 long years.
First of all, by acting like barbarians these people (Those who allegedly attacked innocent Hindus!) insulted the spirit of Islam. Such is the level of our ignorance about Islam!!
Lastly I would hope our leaders realize that, they have failed our minorities one more time. Blaming opposition cannot excuse such failure. The majority population put our leaders to power and we want to feel secured in our OWN country for a change.
I strongly demand that, our leaders do our best to find those people who took up law on their own hand and oppressed people in the name of Islam. These criminals need to explain how this happened and if found guilty, they should be PUNISHED. If we allow criminals (No matter what religious or political back ground they are from) to get away with violence, our "Independence" will be reduced to some empty slogans. Last time I checked that was not the dream of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Now a days there are plenty of people who profess their love for Bangabandhu, let us work hard to make his dream come true. I can guarantee that he would have preferred to have a secured Bangladesh over having one more institution to be named after him. I do not know how many more stories of injustice we have to witness before we stop sleep walking and start standing beside people who need to be protected.
The last thing I like to see is communities standing against each other. That cannot solve any issues. We have to stand up in ONE VOICE against any oppression. Be that against Muslims, Hindus, Christians or people of no faith.
O ye who believe! Be steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity, and let not hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly. Deal justly, that is nearer to your duty. Observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do. Newspaper reports are not clear on how many of the drama actors were Hindus and how many were Muslims, and who played the Mohammad-insulting part. There is no doubt, however, that most of the Hindu villagers were not actors in the drama; and as far as I know about Satkhira, most of the inhabitants of the villages are likely to be Muslims. It is encouraging that the students of Jagannath Hall of the University of Dhaka have caused some suffering in Dhaka in a civilized manner to expose, and protest against, the barbaric atrocities on religious minorities in Satkhira. It is refreshing that the Muslim Vice-Chancellor and the Muslim Proctor of the university have expressed their solidarity with the students. However, so far I know, no Muslim student lives in Jagannath Hall. It is discouraging that Muslim students from other dormitories did not join in to support the non-Muslim students. Of course, most politicians and intellectuals in Bangladesh have been culpably denying the facts of minority repression in the country. That is why the field criminals have been committing their crimes with impunity. In this particular case, the police remained spectators while Muslim criminals burned and looted the properties of the non-violent Hindus, along with causing physical injuries. No one got killed, because there was no viable protest from the victims. As usual, it was not a riot between two groups; it was a one-sided organized crime spree committed by Muslim criminals on the Hindus. I think the Hindus and the other minority groups should increase their vigilance. They should protest in Bangladesh. They should demand proper share of positions of power for them in the country. They should expose the barbaric atrocities to the world in order to pressure Bangladesh from outside. The Bangladeshi Muslims need to improve on their education in civilized behavior. If they care about a better future for Bangladesh, they have no choice but to respect the rights of the religious minorities. They need to educate themselves to realize that even real mocking/insulting of Muhammad or Allah is not a crime for the any kind of humans (including Muslims) to prosecute; if it is sinful, it should be left for Allah himself to punish the mocker/insulter, with absolutely no criminal act by the Muslims. If the Muslims do not like it, they should condemn it in words, not through barbaric crimes. Of course, in the case of Satkhira, if the fanatics were angry, they should have condemned the Muslim writer in a civilized manner, instead of committing crimes against the powerless Hindus. The government of Bangladesh should bring these criminals to justice. The barbarians have been committing their heinous crimes against religious minorities with impunity for too long in East Bengal (which now constitutes most of Bangladesh). This should be stopped now. সেখানে প্রায় ৩০ সদস্যের পুলিশ রাখা হয। সন্ধ্যার পর প্রায় ৭টার দিকে মোবাইলের মাধ্যমে ডেকে আনা হয় উপজেলার বিভিন্ন গ্রাম থেকে কয়েক হাজার কিশোর যুবককে। পূর্ব প্রস্তুতি নিয়ে থাকা এসকল বহিরাগতরা বিরুদ্ধে বিক্ষোভে ফেটে পড়ে। তারা মিছিল মিটিং করে আসামিদের বিচার দাবি করে। এ কারণে তিনি ইউপি চেয়ারম্যান দিদারুল ইসলামসহ ৭ জনকে আসামি করে মামলা দায়ের করেন বলে মামলার এজাহারে উল্লেখ করেন। কালীগঞ্জ ফতেপুর গ্রামে বহিরাগত হামলাকারীদের তা-বের পর এলাকাবাসী এখন তাদের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিরোধ গড়ে তুলছে। পুলিশের সঙ্গে গ্রামবাসী মোড়ে মোড়ে বহিরাগত হামলাকারীদের প্রতিহত করতে পাহারা বসিয়েছে। শনিবার সন্ধ্যায় ফের বহিরাগতরা গ্রামে ঢুকে স্কুল শিক্ষিকা মিতারানীর লুট করা ও ভেঙ্গে দেয়া বসতবাড়িটি আগুন ধরিয়ে পুড়িয়ে দেয়ার পর গ্রামবাসী এখন একতাবদ্ধ হওয়ার চেষ্টা করছে। শনিবার রাতে মিতারানীর সঙ্গে আগুনে পুড়েছে লক্ষ্মীপদ ম-লের বসতবাড়ি, আসবাবপত্র, ধানের গোলা। হামলাকারীরা সুভাস হাজরার বাড়িতেও আগুন লাগায়। শনিবার দুপুরে জেলা প্রশাসক, পুলিশ সুপার, উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকতা, উপজেলা চেয়ারম্যানসহ সকলেই পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণে রয়েছে বলে দাবি করলেও সন্ধ্যা ৭টায় পুলিশের উপস্থিতিতে ফের ৩টি সংখ্যালঘু পরিবারের বাড়িতে আগুন ধরিয়ে সবকিছু ভস্মীভূত করার ঘটনা ঘটলেও আইন প্রয়োগকারী সংস্থার সদস্যরা ছিল নির্বিকার। এ সময় বাঁচার জন্য পালিয়ে যাওয়া প্রায় ১০টি পরিবারের বাড়িতে লুটপাট করার ঘটনাও ঘটে। এই ঘটনায় স্থানীয় পুলিশের চেন অব কমান্ড নিয়ে প্রশ্ন উঠেছে। কালিগঞ্জ থানায় দু'দফায় প্রায় সাড়ে ৩ বছর চাকরিরত রাজনৈতিক নেতার আর্শীবাদপুষ্ট ওসি ফরিদ আহমেদের প্রশাসনিক দক্ষতা নিয়েও প্রশ্ন তুলেছে বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক ও সামাজিক সংগঠন। এলাকাবাসীসহ বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক নেতৃবৃন্দ ঘটনার সুষ্ঠু তদন্ত, জড়িতদের বিরুদ্ধে আইনানুগ ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ ও চেন অব কমান্ড ভেঙ্গে যাওয়া পুলিশ প্রশাসনের আশু বদলি দাবি করার পাশাপাশি সম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতি বজায় রাখতে এ বিষয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণের জন্য প্রধানমন্ত্রী ও স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রীর হস্তক্ষেপ কামনা করা হয়েছে।
ফতেপুর গ্রামজুড়ে আতঙ্ক। ফের হামলা ও লুটতরাজের আশঙ্কায় বাঁশতলা বাজারের প্রায় ১০ জন দোকানি শনিবার রাতে তাদের মূল্যবান মালামাল সরিয়ে নিয়েছে নিরাপদ স্থানে। ফতেপুর গ্রামের সংখ্যালঘু পরিবারগুলো তাদের পরিবারের সদস্যদের দূরগ্রামে নিকট আত্মীয়দের বাড়িতে পাঠিয়ে দিচ্ছে। হামলা, লুটপাট, ভাংচুরের রবিবার বিকেল পর্যন্ত থানায় কোন মামলা রেকর্ড হয়নি। ওসি ফরিদ আহমেদ বলেন, পুলিশের পক্ষ থেকে শুধু জিডি করে রাখা হয়েছে। ভবিষ্যতে কেউ অভিযোগ দিলে মামলা রেকর্ড করা হবে। ঘটনায় এদিকে বহিরাগতদের হামলা, ভাংচুর, লুটতরাজ, অগ্নিসংযোগ প্রতিহত করতে এবং এলাকায় সব ধর্মের মানুষদের মধ্যে সৌহার্দ্য ফিরিয়ে আনতে রবিবার বের করা হয় শান্তি মিছিল। রবিবার দিনভর দক্ষিণ শ্রীপুর ইউনিয়নের ফতেপুর গ্রামের মানুষ শান্তি ও সৌহার্দ্যরে পক্ষে মিছিল করেছে।
স্বাধীনতা দিবসের সাংস্কৃৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানে ছাত্রদের অভিনীত একটি নাটকে নবীজী সম্পর্কে কটূক্তি করা হয়েছে এই অভিযোগে দক্ষিণ শ্রীপুর ইউপি সদস্য আবু জাফর সাঁপুই বাদী হয়ে বিদ্যালয় পরিচালনা পরিষদের সভাপতি, তিনজন সদস্য, দু'জন শিক্ষক ও নাটক পরিচালনাকারীর নাম উল্লেখ করে শুক্রবার থানায় একটি মামলা দায়ের করেন। মামলা করার পরই ওসি স্কুলে এসে প্রধান শিক্ষক ও সহকারী প্রধান শিক্ষকদ্বয়কে বাড়ি থেকে স্কুলে ডেকে এনে তাদের গ্রেফতার করেন। ধর্মীয় অনুভূতিতে আঘাত হানার ঘটনায় আইনী প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হলেও শনিবার সকাল থেকে বহিরাগত ইউনিয়নের গ্রাম থেকে আসা হাজার হাজার উগ্র মানুষ তা-ব চালায় ফতেপুর গ্রামে। হামলা চালিয়ে লুটপাট করে হাজতে আটক থাকা মিতারানীর বসতবাড়ি। আগুন জ্বালিয়ে পুড়িয়ে দেয় স্কুল ম্যানেজিং কমিটির সদস্য আকুল মেম্বারসহ তার তিনভাই-এর বসতবাড়ি। পোড়ানো হয় স্থানীয় সাংস্কৃতিক পরিষদ। ভেঙ্গে তছনছ করা হয় ফতেপুর মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়ের চেয়ার, টেবিলসহ আসবাবপত্র। লুট করা হয় হাকিমের বাঁশতলা বাজারের কম্পিউটারের দোকান। শনিবার সকাল ১১টায় ইউনিয়নের বাইরে থেকে আসা কয়েক হাজার মানুষ এই অতর্কিত হামলায় অংশ নেয়। জেলা প্রশাসন, পুলিশ প্রশাসনসহ বিভিন্ন আইন প্রয়োগকারী সংস্থার জেলা প্রধানদের উপস্থিতিতে হামলাকারীরা আর কোন অঘটন ঘটাবে না বলে প্রশাসনিক কর্মকর্তাদের আশ্বস্ত করলেও সন্ধ্যার পর ফের হামলা, ভাংচুর, অগ্নিসংযোগ ও লুটপাটের ঘটনা ঘটে। এই হামলা, অগ্নিসংযোগ ও লুটপাটের কথা স্বীকার করে কালিগঞ্জ থানার ওসি ফরিদ উদ্দিন রবিবার বিকেলে জনকণ্ঠকে বলেন, ধর্মীয় অনুভূতিতে আঘাত হানার অভিযোগে দায়ের করা মামলার বাদী জাফর সাপুই-এর ভাই জুলফিকার সাপুই-এর নেতৃত্বে ৪শ' থেকে ৫শ' জন লোক লাঠিসোটা মিছিল নিয়ে ফতেপুর গ্রামের বিভিন্ন বাড়িতে হামলা, লুটতরাজ ও অগ্নিসংযোগের ঘটনা ঘটায়। শনিবার সকালে ভেঙ্গে দেয়া ও লুটকরা শিক্ষিকা মিতারানীর বাড়িতে তারা পেট্রোল ঢেলে আগুন দিয়ে পুড়িয়ে দেয়। এ সময় আরো ৩টি সংখ্যালঘু পরিবারের বাড়িতে হামলা, লুটতরাজ ও অগ্নিসংযোগের ঘটনা ঘটে বলে ওসি স্বীকার করেন। এদিকে দেয়ালে পিঠ ঠেকে যাওয়া ফতেপুর গ্রামবাসী এখন বাঁচার লড়াইয়ে নেমেছে। সকালে শান্তি মিছিল চলাকালে শনিবার রাতের হামলার নেতৃত্বদানকারী জুলফিকার সাপুই শান্তি মিছিলের সামনে পড়ে জনরোষের মুখে পালিয়ে বাঁচেন। এলাকাবাসীর অভিযোগ, মৌলবাদী সংগঠনের সদস্য এলাকার জনৈক কলেজ শিক্ষক বিভিন্ন মসজিদে যেয়ে এ বিষয়টি নিয়ে উস্কে দিয়ে এই পরিকল্পিত হামলার পট তৈরি করে সরকারের ইমেজ নষ্ট করেছেন। এই ইস্যু তৈরির নেপথ্যে যারা জড়িত তাদেরও খুঁজে বের করার দাবি উঠেছে।
