You must be very proud of KOKO & TAREK - the Tiger Sharks:

The opposition (BNP/Jamaat), too, has a reputation for thuggery,
corruption and intimidation, and does not bother much to hide it....

Hitting the nail on its head is the problem for the Economist. It is now a "smear campaign" for stating the truth. It is simply beyond my comprehension as to how these seemingly educated people can still put up with this idea of supporting such an anti-people regime. The Economist is, of course, totally correct when it asks Delhi to solve this problem because the world knows that this govt. is an Indian puppet. It is willing to India anything for India without expecting anything in return like a one-sided love affair. Actions speak much louder than words.
This BAL govt. received bags of cash during the election and it has to give something back in return. The equation is very simple.

To counter this money transaction from India, RAW and its BAL supporters had started this false campaign against BNP linking it to ISI. Predictably, the campaign by an Indian Journalist named Diponjon Roy Choudhury initiated this. BAL thought that it was a golden opportunity. Alas, it fell apart. I wonder what Mr. Choudhury is doing now!

UK journal picks on Hasina govt, again

Dhaka, May 26 (bdnews24.com)—The Economist magazine has taken an increasingly hostile snipe at Bangladesh and its government in two more articles where it also sees Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from planning to twist election results to cracking down on NGOs.

The disparaging articles appeared on the London-based magazine's May 26 edition, also uploaded on its website on Friday, and censured her, taking sideswipes at the opposition led by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

In one of the articles titled 'Bangladesh's toxic politics: Hello, Delhi', the magazine suggested India try to stop Hasina from 'ruining Bangladesh'.

The other report, titled 'Politics in Bangladesh: Banged about', was no less derisive as it said the Prime Minister was setting the country "on a dangerous path'.

Hasina was strikingly at the centre of a fusillade of criticism from the publication.

The first story attempts to justify the call for Indian intervention. "Since Bangladesh's political leaders show no interest in their fate, outsiders need to do so."

It then goes on to accuse Hasina of using her party's sweeping mandate in the 2008 polls "to consolidate power and hound her enemies, real and imagined".

"There has been a spate of mysterious disappearances. This month 33 senior members of the opposition were arrested on charges of vandalism and arson.

"A war-crimes tribunal to investigate the atrocities in Bangladesh's war of independence...now looks like an attempt to discredit the BNP and its Islamist allies."

It urges for a shift in India's attitude saying it has the "most telling" influence in Dhaka.

The Economist leader charged the government with pursuing Mohammad Yunus, which is "seen as payback for his temerity in 2007 in trying to launch a "third force" in politics".

The Hasina administration "announced a review into ownership of Grameen, a move to take over (and probably destroy) the bank".

The second article was unrelenting in its attack on the Awami League-led government.

"One of the country's best known figures, Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank, has been harassed for some time. An increasingly paranoid Mrs Hasina sees him as a political threat," it continues.
And it quotes the man himself as saying: "We are very worried that the commission has been formed and terms of reference include ownership."

Then the piece suggests it was India that could change things since it has "much influence in Dhaka".

"Until recently the regional superpower tolerated Sheikh Hasina's excesses... India now seems to be hedging its bets between the two parties. But if it still wants to have a functioning democracy next door, it needs to speak out far louder in favour of it," the first piece concludes.

The second one tries to feel the pulse of the Indian ruling class.

"India's ruling Congress party may now, sensibly, be hedging its bets. Pranab Mukherjee, India's finance minister, called on Mrs Zia recently, inviting her back to Delhi. Mrs Zia chuckles that she will go after Delhi's summer heat is past."

The write-up enlarges on the political volatility in Bangladesh and draws an analogy between Prime Minister Hasina and the drivers on crowded Dhaka streets.

"Drivers skilled at furious honking are also masters of compromise and smiles."

Make of that what you will.

Hasina came in for more scathing criticism for tinkering with the constitution with the next general election in sight.

It goes: "Although she did mess with the constitution, scrapping arrangements she had previously insisted on in opposition for a neutral caretaker to run the government for three months before election day, she now appears to want to keep her options open, possibly in order to be better able to skew the outcome of the next election."

The government was also castigated for a spate of mysterious killings and disappearance of M Ilias Ali, murder of a Saudi diplomat, "a trade-union activist tortured and murdered; a pair of journalists butchered after investigating corruption".

"This correspondent was trailed in Dhaka by a pair of secret-service men on a motorbike. A rumour of a bizarre coup attempt, in January, was used by the government to get closer political control over the army."

The magazine then announced that it will be none other than Hasina will have to take the blame for what apparently looks like a violent political storm on the horizon.

"Uncertainty leading up to the next election, and growing anxiety among diplomats and foreign observers of Bangladesh, suggest a hard, tense time ahead. More than anyone, blame the driver."

Smear campaign

The Bangladesh government had accused the magazine of running a "smear campaign" against the country after it ran an article which said India had helped and funded the ruling party's election victory in 2008.

In a story titled Embraceable You on July 30 last year, The Economist wrote that relations between India and Bangladesh had "blossomed" ever since "2008, when the Awami League, helped by bags of Indian cash and advice, triumphed in general elections in Bangladesh".

It sparked incandescent outburst even from many independent political observers and brought a swathe of reaction from the ruling think-tank.

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni had told bdnews24 that the report was "disgraceful".

Moni said the magazine had earlier opposed the International Crimes Tribunal to try those Bangladeshis accused of collaborating with the Pakistani forces and committing atrocities during the nation's independence in 1971.

Dear Mr. Mohammad A. Arafat

Thanks for your nice words
The same comments are more appropriate for you. You are doing great job.

I also express my heartiest gratitude to you for your reply. Though I am not known or familiar to you – personally.

But I strongly believe that - we are known and very close - ideologically-politically-mentally-morally

I am busy with many 'unimportant' thing, other than the office work (as I am alone in Oman now), still I watch your informative-logical-rational-factual talk shows. This is the only advantage of my present job location, Oman. When I was in New Zealand it was not possible to watch any TV channels of Bangladesh.

But, gradually we are losing our enthusiastic interest to watch TV talk shows - as most of the TV talk shows hosts (except few like Mr. Pronab Saha, Mr. Rubiyat Ferdous, Mr. Rahul Raha, Mr. Forhad Ahmed (Mohona), Ms. Munni Saha, Mr. Md. Jahangir, Mr. J E Mamun) and TV talk shows guests (except very few extraordinary, like you and few others, like Mr. Suvash S Roy, Dr. Muntasir Mamun, Engr. Mozammel Babu, Mr. Mostafa Jabbar, Adv Rezaul Karim, Mr. Musa Sadik, Banker Mamunur Rashid and few more) are neither well prepared nor equipped with appropriate information-knowledge-data.

Being a very ordinary citizen, I have observed most shockingly and also with utmost surprise that, most of our host and guest of the TV talk shows - either give complete bogus statement-data-information or mix of incorrect and true statement-data-information (which is more dangerous) or self contradictory statements-comments.

They are mainly and most of the BNP leaders (like Dr. Moin Khan-Khondakar Musharraf-Bar. Rafiq-Dudu-Ripon-Moni-Papia etc), so called neutral intellectual like Dr. Pias Karim, Dr. Asif Najrul, Munir Hussain, even some time respected A B M Musa also lose his balance!

Presenter Mr. Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Mr. Anjon Roy are openly bias and controversial.
They (mainly EKUSHER  RAT) have some fixed guests of (a journalist of the Iteefaq, Mr. Munir Haider, one lower category LDP leader (Selim), most corrupt (jailed with full family), ex BNP minister Mr. Tuku and controversial AL MP Roni.

I am also surprised by recent role of EKUSHE TV.

I have watched in my own eye that Mr. Salam (owner of EKUSHE TV) was telling Awami League and it's leaders are "BAIMAN" (traitor)!

And Anjon Roy's "Ekusher  Rat" and Dr. Kanak Sarwar's so called "Janatar Kotha" (actually preselected hard line Jamat-BNP activists/supporter's interview) and programmes of Mr. Mahmudur Rahman Manna in Bangla Vision have become the (anti Awami League) propaganda cell-office of BNP-Jamat.

Even EKUSHE TV broadcast very personal news of ex BNP corrupt minister Mr. Tuku as "breaking news"!

Sometime Mr. Jillur Rahman of Tritio Matra also invites poor guests (like Anjon does),

So, please keep up your fight.
We are with you.

Please convey our regards to Shomi Vabee also

Joy Bangla.

RE: [mukto-mona] তিব্বতের উপর চিনের আধীপত্যবাদের তিব্র নিন্দা করছি

I am quite fascinated by the dedication and passion of the person sacrificing his life for the cause. I used to think about the sacrifice and dedication of the suicide-bombers also. But, this is a different form of protest, in which no innocent bystanders get killed. Suicide-bombing is synonymous with terrorism. But, this is the ultimate form of protest that will surely grab international attention and sympathy. Unfortunately, Tibetans are facing ruthless Chinese dictatorship, which does not even care about the human-rights of their own people in China. I hope world will see the gravity of the situation in Tibet and respond appropriately.

By the way – I am surprised to see that Dalai Lama is not so vocal on the Tibet issue when he adresses international audiences. It seems like - his only interest is to promote Buddhism around the world, while his own countrymen become Communist en masse. Does this make sense?

Bangladesh, as the ORIGIN from where Buddhism traveled to Tibet, should feel a special pain at the plight of Tibetans.  Can we send a message of solidarity? At least Bianca Jagger is available in the e-mail.  I met her once in London a long time ago.

Why Tibet Matters

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is in London today to receive the Templeton Prize in recognition of his outstanding achievements and spiritual wisdom.

Tibet has a long-standing connection to Britain. Prior to the Chinese invasion in 1949-50, Britain was the only country to formally recognize Tibet as an independent nation. British representatives were stationed in Lhasa from 1904 to 1947 to liaise with the Tibetan government. In 1949 the newly-victorious leader of the China Communist Party Mao Zedong announced, over the radio waves, his intention to "liberate" Tibet from this "foreign imperialism."
Over the past 60 years, Tibet has been anything but "liberated" by the Chinese Communist Party.

On the 10th of May I delivered two reports to 10 Downing Street. The reports, by the Society for Threatened People and the International Campaign for Tibet, document the devastating impact of Chinese Communist Party rule in Tibet.
I appealed to Prime Minister David Cameron to support the Tibetans at this critical time in their struggle.

In recent months we have seen harrowing images and footage of Tibetans who have set fire to themselves as a form of protest. Since February, 2009, 35 Tibetans have sacrificed themselves, in an act of desperation, which emerges from the anguish of oppression. Tibetans who have self-immolated include monks, nuns, a 19-year old female student, a widowed mother of four, and a Tibetan reincarnate lama in his forties.
This is one of the most significant waves of self-immolation for the past 60 years, eclipsing the number of self-immolation protests by Vietnamese monks, those associated with the Vietnam War and the pro-democracy movement in South Korea.

The Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn has observed, "To burn oneself by fire is to prove that what one is saying is of the utmost importance."
Although we do not know the last words of all the Tibetans who have poured kerosene over themselves and lit a match, we do know that most have died offering prayers for the Dalai Lama to return home, and for freedom in Tibet.
2012-05-14-bric_summit_0327.jpg

It is time for us to listen to what Tibetans inside Tibet are saying. It is time for the international community to listen to them and to act.
Over the past four years, the Chinese government has engaged in a comprehensive cover-up of the torture, disappearances and killings that have taken place across Tibet. They have engaged upon a virulent propaganda offensive against the Dalai Lama.
On the international stage, Beijing has subverted and politicized international forums where its human rights record has been challenged and refused to answer legitimate questions from governments about the use of lethal force against unarmed protestors, or the welfare of individual detainees.
Over the past 60 years, the Chinese government has instituted increasingly hard line policies that undermine Tibetan culture and religion. The Tibetan people have been denied freedom of expression. Their language has been downgraded. And their economic resources have been misappropriated by the Chinese state, with increasing numbers of Chinese migrants moving to the Tibetan plateau.
China's economic strategies are literally re-shaping the Tibetan landscape and endangering the fragile ecosystem of the world's largest and highest altitude plateau. The survival of one of the world's only remaining systems of sustainable pastoralism is under threat, as nomads are being displaced from their ancestral lands and settled into remote concrete encampments under an urbanization drive.

Why should Tibet matter? It matters because of the terrible suffering of its people, and because of the need for this ancient religion and the Tibetan cultural identity to survive. This is a culture based on the concepts of wisdom, compassion and inter-dependence. These are valuable teachings for the Tibetan people, and for the world.
The survival of Tibet is not just a moral issue. The country is situated in a strategic geopolitical position, between two nuclear giants, India and China. The future of Tibet is tied to Asian and international security.

Tibet is known as the earth's 'Third Pole', with the largest supply of fresh water in the world outside the two Poles. Most of Asia's major rivers have their sources in Tibet, meaning that development policies, damming and land degradation in Tibet can affect hundreds of millions of people elsewhere. China cannot claim that Tibet is their 'internal affair.'
This is a critical year for China. Divisions in the Chinese Communist Party have been exposed amidst a new clamor for genuine reform. At this historic juncture the international community should be actively engaged in finding a solution to the crisis in Tibet.

In our letter to David Cameron, we urged him to lead a multilateral effort in support of Tibet. The UK government should coordinate its efforts with other like-minded countries and call on the Chinese government to review the policies towards Tibetans that are the root cause of the self-immolations, the ongoing tensions and unrest, and which are threatening the unique culture, religion, and identity of the Tibetan people. The UK government, together with the European Commission should maintain and where possible expand targeted programmatic assistance for Tibetans including support for sustainable, culturally appropriate development assistance to Tibetan communities; educational and cultural exchange programs targeted to Tibetans both in Tibet and in exile.

Amnesty has also requested that the Chinese government allow independent monitors, for instance the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, into the country.
The international community should engage in regular dialogue with Tibetan representatives, including the Dalai Lama and his representatives, and Lobsang Sangay, the new Tibetan Prime Minister in exile, to address the immediate crisis in Tibet.

I urge President Obama to take concrete steps to demonstrate his commitment to the fundamental human rights of the Tibetan people, and stand by his words of January 19th 2011, when he professed 'America's fundamental commitment to the universal rights of all people. That includes basic human rights like freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association and demonstration, and of religion -- rights that are recognized in the Chinese constitution... Even as we, the United States, recognize that Tibet is part of the People's Republic of China, the United States continues to support further dialogue between the government of China and the representatives of the Dalai Lama to resolve concerns and differences, including the preservation of the religious and cultural identity of the Tibetan people.'
The religious and cultural identity of the Tibetan people is under threat in Tibet today. The Tibetans are standing up to the vast and expanding power of the Chinese state with nonviolent resistance through religious practice, song, literature, and even self-immolation. They are struggling to preserve their religion and cultural identity. As a consequence they are subjected to imprisonment, torture, deprivation and worse. Yet they persevere. Their bravery should serve as a call to action. I call upon the international community to act now on behalf of Tibet. Time is running out. The very survival of the Tibetan people hangs in the balance.

My heartfelt thanks to Bianca Jagger for "Why Tibet Matters." China's violation of human rights and repressive policy must be ended once for all. Their thinking and policy too are really old that doesn't relavant today's world, though, many being entertained by made in China. Tibet's issu is wellbeing of billions people in the world as it indicated. With human feeling, understanding people do need to stand for Tibet, at least not part of problem. Tibetan struggle is more spirituality freedom rather pur politic. So many spiritual leaders including Dalai Lama heavily involved with it no matter how gaint China is and powerful regimes are . Tibetan spirituality must be survived for the today's suffering of emotion and arguments. Thus, Tibetans need your help. Thank you Bianca.

Therefore, this Article is trumendous helpful to open the eyes of many people, especially, make to think those who brainwashed. Thank you so much.

Two Opium Wars imposed on a weak China and they still want to subjugate China through this monk proxy. The colonialists never, never give up. 'Human rights', 'self determination', etc. are just code words for them. Gadaffi found out too late.

Subject: [mukto-mona]
