If talking about your issues alienates some majority, rest assured – they will not help you when you need them. Sugar-coating the reality to appease them is a dishonest practice. Yes, we need help from the majority, and they will be there if you let them be aware of your problems. I believe, Muslim free-thinkers are well aware of what's going on with minorities in Bangladesh and Pakistan? Many of them are openly talking about the discrimination of religious minorities in Bangladesh and in Pakistan. They are familiar with minority problems. Bangladeshi News media are printing them every day. Many of them came forward to protect Buddhists community in Bangladesh, this time around. This is what we need. Minorities need to bring their grievances to the general folks, who are basically secular. Hunky-dory sugar-coated talks from minorities will not serve that purpose. In fact, it will mislead the people. I am sure regular folks in Bangladesh are ready for straight-talks, no matter where they fall. Rest assured, some people will get alienated by your straight-talks; but - that's not the reason to stop talking about them. Awami Leaguers were also involved in the carnage on Buddhist community and they may not like to hear the truth either, and get alienated. To appease them, you cannot just blame BNP/Jamat. If you do, you are only encouraging Awami Leaguers to screw the minority even more next time. Minorities have been a pawn of Awami League for so long, and see what they have been getting for that loyalty. Just look at incidents in Chittagong, Nandirhat, Satkhira, etc. Awami League is using minority oppressions for their political gain. When it comes to religious issues, there is very little difference between Awami League and BNP. Unfortunately, minority issues are, by in large, religious discriminations. The only reason BNP has very little minority support is because of their stupid communal politics; in their world minorities are all agents of some foreign countries, especially Hindus are all RAW agents. Anti-India propaganda is what BNP uses to polarize their base. On the other hand, Awami League appeases minorities by sugar-coating their communal intent under the guise of the so called "Secularism." You know that attacks on minority communities and temples are going on unabated under Awami League government, and many of them are being perpetrated by the so called Awami Leaguers. I can understand tunnel-vision from a member of the majority community, on the ground that they have no experience of communality directly. But such vision from a member of the minority community is unexpected. I noticed, every time you talk about minority issues in Bangladesh, you bring some minority issues in India to counter balance. That's what I expect from a member of the majority group, not from a member of a victim community. Victims usually cry for help for themselves, not for some other victims in a distant land. But, that's what you do. If you still like the sugar-coated appeasement strategy, you can do it. But, remember that we have been there and done that before, and the problem is still getting worse. It is a badly written article. It is the screaming of a frustrated angry man belonging to a religiously minority section. We should feel sorry for the writer. He does not understand or does not want to understand politics or the workings of the society. His obsession with minority persecution in Bangladesh has made him miss the bigger picture. This low level journalism does not help promote minority cause at all. It rather causes confusion and throws away the baby with dirty water. Also it strengthens the hands of the reactionary forces home and abroad. His description of Urdu as a bastard language is laughable. He sees every perpetrator as a Jihadi ("jongi" if my translation is right)!

No doubt, that article was poorly written by the author. However, if you look at the post partition history of subcontinent, no amount of good/intelligent articles/acts have really worked for the minorities. Did not Gandhi try with his witty words? Did not many Dhaka University teachers leave for West Bengal because they did not feel secure in East Pakistan/ Bangladesh? Did not these bright people write good articles? The recent attack against Budhists is just another good example and more might be coming if I am not mistaken. These monsters will find another blasphemy cause to torment the minorities. There is a time when you call a spade as spade and do pray for torment to just go away. If liberal Muslims get upset with your outbursts, so be it! Express yourself or be marginalized! The minorities have been leaving in droves (in many cases forced) with only one way ticket. They needed majority support but that never really materialized. I must say that very few people really like minorities in Bangladesh. They have more love for Kashmiri and Palestinian Muslims than their own brother and sisters. It is rather a very sad mentality. In long run, Islamic states would not allow minorities to stay as minorities while they (Muslims) as a group would fight for their rights and global Ummah. Good for goose but not so good for gander? বিতর্কে জড়িয়ে পড়েছে নর্থ সাউথ ইউনিভার্সিটি। বিতর্কের মধ্যেই এবার উপাচার্য পদের জন্য শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়ে ইউনিভার্সিটি কর্তৃপক্ষের পাঠানো তালিকায় চলে এসেছে যুদ্ধাপরাধের দায়ে অভিযুক্ত জামায়াতের সাবেক আমির গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নে ও সাবেক ইসলামী ছাত্রসংঘের কেন্দ্রীয় নেতার নাম! ট্রাস্টি বোর্ডের প্রগতিশীল এমনকি বিএনপিপন্থী একজনকেও এড়িয়ে জামায়াতের রাজনীতির সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত তিন ট্রাস্টির আশীর্বাদে উপাচার্যের জন্য গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নের নাম প্রস্তাবের ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে তোলপাড় শুরু হয়েছে। ঘটনা প্রকাশ হয়ে পড়ায় অসন্তোষ ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে প্রগতিশীল শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীদের মাঝে। বিশেষ গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার তদন্তে ঘটনার সত্যতা পাওয়ার পর সোমবার দুপুরে উপাচার্য হিসেবে গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নের নিয়োগ বন্ধে শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়কে সুপারিশ করেছে স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়। এদিকে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে গ্রেফতার হওয়া নাফিসের সঙ্গে হিযবুত তাহ্রীরের কানেকশন খুঁজতে নর্থ সাউথে কাজ করছে গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের একাধিক টিম ও এফবিআইয়ের এদেশীয় এজন্টেরা। শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়ের সূত্রগুলো বলছে, বেসরকারী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় অধ্যাদেশ অনুসারে প্রতিটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়কেই উপাচার্য নিয়োগের জন্য তাদের পছন্দ অনুসারে তিন ব্যক্তির নাম পাঠাতে হয়। এখান থেকে তথ্য যাচাই-বাছাই করে চ্যাঞ্চেলর ও রাষ্ট্রপতির কাছে তালিকাটি পাঠায় মন্ত্রণালয়। চ্যাঞ্চেলর তিনজনের মধ্য থেকে একজনকে উপাচার্য হিসেবে নিয়োগ দেন। সে হিসেবে নর্থ সাউথ ইউনিভর্সিটি কর্তৃপক্ষ শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়ে উপাচার্য পদের জন্য তিনজনের নামের তালিকা পাঠিয়েছে। কিন্তু যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে সন্ত্রাসী হামলার পরিকল্পনার অভিযোগে নর্থ সাউথের ছাত্র কাজী মোহাম্মদ রেজওয়ানুল আহসান নাফিসের আটকের পর প্রতিষ্ঠানটির ভেতর থেকেই উপাচার্য পদের তালিকা নিয়ে বিতর্ক ওঠে। জামায়াতের রাজনীতির সঙ্গে সরাসরি জড়িত ট্রাস্টবোর্ডের তিন সদস্য ও ৫ শিক্ষককের প্রত্যক্ষ মদদে তালিকায় গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নের নামসহ ইসলামী ছাত্রসংঘের সাবেক নেতাদের নাম দেয়া হয়েছে বলে অভিযোগ ওঠে। এই একই চক্রের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিষ্ঠানটিতে হিযবুত তাহ্্রীর ও শিবিরের পূর্ণাঙ্গ কমিটি কাজ করছে বলে আগেই অভিযোগ তোলেন প্রগতিশীল শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীরা। এরপরই ঘটনা তদন্তে মাঠে নামে সরকারের একাধিক গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অনেক শিক্ষক গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নের বিষয়ে সতর্ক হওয়ার জন্য শিক্ষা ও স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়কে পরামর্শ দেয়। তদন্তে গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নের নাম ও এই নাম পাঠানোর বিষয়ে প্রতিষ্ঠানটির জামায়াতপন্থী একটি গ্রুপের তৎপরতার প্রমাণ পওয়া যায়। সোমবার দুপুরে স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয় থেকে শিক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়কে বলা হয়, উপাচার্য হিসেবে যে তালিকা দেয়া হয়েছে, তাতে কম্পিউটার সায়েন্সের শিক্ষক আবুল আল হকের নিয়োগ বন্ধ করা জরুরী। জামায়াতের সাবেক আমির গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নে হওয়া, সঠিক পথে তার নাম প্রস্তাব না করা এবং জঙ্গী সংগঠনের কার্যক্রম নিয়ে বিতর্কের এই পর্যায়ে এই শিক্ষকের উপাচার্য নিয়োগ নিয়ে আপত্তি আছে। এ ছাড়া আবদুর রব মিয়া নামে অপর একজনের বিষয়েও একাই আদর্শের রাজনীতি ও মৌলবাদী কর্মকা-ে মদদ দেয়ার অভিযোগ ওঠায় আপত্তি জানিয়েছেন প্রগতিশীল শিক্ষকরা। স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের এক কর্মকর্তা সন্ধ্যায় জনকণ্ঠকে বলেন, প্রতিষ্ঠানটিকে মৌলবাদী সংগঠনের তৎপরতার মধ্যে নতুন করে বিতার্কিক কাউকে নিয়োগ দিলে সঙ্কট বাড়বে। গোলাম আযমের ভাগ্নের নিয়োগের চেষ্টার প্রমাণ পাওয়ার পরই তা বন্ধ করার সুপারিশ করা হয়েছে। এদিকে নাফিসের সঙ্গে হিযবুত তাহ্রীরের কানেকশন খুঁজতে নর্থ সাউথে কাজ করছে গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের একাধিক টিম ও এফবিআইয়ের এদেশীয় এজন্টেরা। এ-সংক্রান্ত তথ্য সংগ্রহের জন্য গত দুদিন গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের একটি দল রাজধানীর বেসরকারী ইউনিভার্সিটি নর্থ সাউথের ক্যাম্পাসে গিয়েছিল। সেখানে গিয়ে ইউনিভার্সিটির শিক্ষক, কর্মকর্তা, কর্মচারী ও শিক্ষার্থীদের সঙ্গে তাঁরা কথা বলেছেন। তার সঙ্গে নিষিদ্ধ ঘোষিত হিযবুত তাহ্রীর সম্পর্ক ছিল কি না, সে বিষয়ে জানতে তাদের নানা কৌশলে জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করেছে। গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার সূত্রে জানা গেছে, এফবিআই অধিকতর তদন্তে সহায়তা করার জন্য মহানগর গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের একাধিক টিম মাঠে রয়েছে। এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় গোয়েন্দা সদস্যরা নর্থ সাউথ ইউনিভার্সিটিতে যান। ইতোমধ্যে নাফিসের পিতা-মাতাসহ ঘনিষ্ঠ আত্মীয়স্বজনদের কাছ থেকে নাফিসের বিষয়ে বিস্তারিত তথ্য সংগ্রহ করেছে গোয়েন্দা পুলিশ। আমেরিকা যাওয়ার আগে নাফিস যেসব শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে পড়ালেখা করেছে তার সব জায়গায় গোয়েন্দারা গেছে। বিভিন্ন কৌশলে তথ্য নিয়েছে। নাফিসের স্কুল, কলেজ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সহপাঠীদেরও জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করা হয়েছে। ঢাকা মহানগর পুলিশের এক কর্মকর্তা বলেন, বাংলাদেশে অবস্থানরত এফবিআইয়ের একজন এজেন্ট (লিগ্যাল এ্যাটাচে) নাফিসের জঙ্গী কানেকশন খুঁজতে আইডিয়াল স্কুলের পাঠ্যসূচী সংগ্রহ করেছেন। একই সঙ্গে তাদের সহপাঠদান শিক্ষা কার্যক্রমে অতিরিক্ত ধর্মপরায়ণতার বৈশিষ্ট্য খুঁজে বেড়াচ্ছেন। এ ছাড়া নাফিসের বাংলাদেশী বন্ধুদের তালিকা সংগ্রহে নেমেছেন। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে যাওয়ার পর স্বজনদের বাইরে আর কারও সঙ্গে নাফিস যোগাযোগ করেছে কি না কিংবা করে থাকলে তাদের রাজনৈতিক মতাদর্শ কী ছিল সে বিষয়ে তথ্যানুসন্ধান করছেন। নর্থ সাউথ ইউনিভার্সিটিতে কাদের সঙ্গে নাফিস বেশি মিশত, কোন শিক্ষকের সঙ্গে ঘনিষ্ঠ সম্পর্ক ছিল এবং তাদের আলোচনা কিংবা আড্ডার বিষয়বস্তু খুঁজছেন এফবিআই এজেন্টরা। জানা গেছে, নিউইয়র্কে গ্রেফতারের পর পরই এফবিআই সদর দফতর থেকে বাংলাদেশে অবস্থানরত এজেন্টের কাছে নাফিসের যাবতীয় তথ্য চাওয়া হয়। এর পর পরই ঢাকা মহানগর গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হয়। এর আগে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে সন্ত্রাসী হামলার পরিকল্পনার অভিযোগে নর্থ সাউথ ইউনিভার্সিটির ছাত্র কাজী মোহাম্মদ রেজওয়ানুল আহসান নাফিসের গ্রেফতারের ঘটনায় তোলপাড় শুরু হয় পুরো শিক্ষাঙ্গনে। এত দিন ইমেজ নষ্ট হওয়ার ভয়ে নিষিদ্ধ ঘোষিত জঙ্গী সংগঠন হিযবুত তাহ্রীর ও ছাত্রশিবিরের বেপরোয়া কর্মকা- গোপন রেখেছিলেন কর্তৃপক্ষ। এমনকি জঙ্গিবাদী কর্মকা-ের দায়ে এক শিক্ষক ও চার ছাত্রের আটকের পরেও পরিস্থিতি সামাল দেয়ার চেষ্টা হয়। কিন্তু নাফিসের গ্রেফতারে কর্তৃপক্ষ আর লুকিয়ে রাখতে পারছে না। সরকারের একটি বিশেষ গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার প্রতিবেদন এমনকি প্রতিষ্ঠানটির প্রগতিশীল শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীদের অভিযোগ, জামায়াতের রাজনীতির সঙ্গে সরাসরি জড়িত ট্রাস্টবোর্ডের দুই সদস্য ও ৫ শিক্ষককের প্রত্যক্ষ মদদে উগ্র মৌলবাদীদের আস্তানায় পরিণত হয়েছে নর্থ সাউথ। হিযবুত তাহ্রীর ও শিবিরের পূর্ণাঙ্গ কমিটি সক্রিয় থাকা একমাত্র বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ও এটি। যেখানে পাঠচক্রের আড়ালে হচ্ছে শিবির ও হিযবুত তাহ্রীরের ঐক্যবদ্ধ বৈঠক। সর্বশেষ পরিস্থিতিতে উদ্বিগ্ন নর্থ সাউথ কর্তৃপক্ষ। ট্রাস্টি বোর্ডের সদ্য বিদায়ী চেয়ারম্যান ও বর্তমান সদস্য মোঃ শাহজাহান জনকণ্ঠকে বলেন, র্যাব ও গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার পক্ষ থেকে বিভিন্ন সময়ে অভিযোগ তোলা হয়েছে। কিন্তু এত মানুষের ব্যক্তিগত তথ্য আমাদের পক্ষে যাছাই করা কঠিন। আমি সরকারের গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার প্রতি আহ্বান জানাই আপনারা ছাত্র, শিক্ষকদের পরিচয়, রাজনৈতিক আদর্শ খতিয়ে দেখুন। তথ্য যাছাই করে অভিযুক্ত হলে অবশ্যই তার বিরুদ্ধে দেশের আইন অনুসারে কঠোর ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করুন। তিনি জানান, Dear Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, We are writing as diverse religious leaders in New York City concerned about the recent violence against Buddhist Temples in Bangladesh. Given the long history of peaceful coexistence between Buddhists and Muslims in your country, these developments are particularly disturbing. As New Yorkers of Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and Jewish background committed to cooperation between people of diverse faith traditions and in particular the free exercise of religion for minority traditions, we recognize that these are not simply local concerns. In a world made small by technology, the violence that has wracked Bangladesh is making itself felt here in New York and we join together with religious leaders of diverse faith traditions to ask your government to 1) bring to justice those who committed the heinous acts of violence against Buddhist temples and homes last week, 2) support religious freedom across the country with special attention to the rights of religious minorities. To this end we are attaching an important statement of peace made by the ULEMA-MASHAIKH (Muslim Clergy-Spiritual Leaders) of BANGLADESH and a statement of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council of the USA for your consideration.
