Re: [mukto-mona] Even Turks love Ghulam Azam?

Gul is respected person? By whom? For what? Just ask Kurds and Europeans! The country is not even permitted to join EU for it's chronic violation of human rights.

Turkey is a small potato member of NATO with very little muscle and say. Zillur Rahman should give Gul a middle finger and that would be right response to this unwarranted interference in Bangladeshi internal affairs.

Clemency is usually asked after the sentencing of a committed crime. We do not know if they will be convicted of the crimes they are accused of, yet clemency is sought assuming they are guilty as charged. This is a very interesting case, in which religious connection is overriding the right or wrong. Why don ' t we wait for the verdict before we ask for pardon, Mr. President? How about the victim families if they have really committed the crimes? Who will show empathy for them, Mr. President?

Tension with Turkey

Dhaka surprised as Gul calls upon Zillur to pardon war crimes accused

Diplomatic Correspondent
Diplomatic tension has been created between Dhaka and Ankara over Turkish President Abdullah Gul ' s letter to President Zillur Rahman calling for "clemency" to the accused under trial in the International Crimes Tribunal for the "sake of peace in the society".
Gul requested clemency for Ghulam Azam and the other accused, foreign ministry sources said.
Tension intensified as Ankara summoned yesterday Bangladesh Ambassador to Turkey Md Zulfiqur Rahman, a day after Dhaka summoned Turkish Ambassador in Bangladesh Mehmet Vakur Erkul on Wednesday.
The foreign ministry sources told The Daily Star yesterday that content of the December 23 letter from the Turkish president is not acceptable and it is a clear interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh .
Gul said the accused leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami are too old to stand trial and apprehended that it might cause a civil war in Bangladesh , the sources mentioned.
Dhaka was surprised to get such a letter and was going to send a reply to the Turkish president, but it was delayed because of the president ' s illness.
Subsequently, the visit of a 14-member delegation of Turkish NGO Cansuyu Aid and Solidarity Association from December 20 to 24 hiding their identity and misusing "on arrival visa" facilities and its inappropriate activities have made Dhaka too unhappy.
The foreign ministry summoned the Turkish envoy in Dhaka and asked him to explain the NGO team ' s visit without informing the government.
Acting Foreign Secretary Mustafa Kamal also handed over an aide memoir (diplomatic letter) to the ambassador in which Dhaka strongly protested Gul ' s letter and said it was an interference in the internal affairs of the country.
The aide memoir categorically mentioned that Bangladesh government is determined to conduct the war crimes trial as there is overwhelming support from the people.
It said the trial is taking place in the most transparent way by maintaining international standard, and categorically stated that the government will not compromise on this specific issue.
The two-page letter also mentioned the visit of the Turkish NGO delegation which it said misused the "on arrival visa" facility.
" Bangladesh believes that it is not the job of a friendly country to create any problem or confusion about an issue and hopes that this type of incident will not happen again," the letter stated.
In 2009, Dhaka unilaterally offered "on arrival visa" for tourist, investor, business, official, diplomatic and special passport holders, while Ankara approved on arrival visa only for official and diplomatic passport holders from the middle of this year.
Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, some foreign ministry officials said the government could have sent back the NGO delegation but it refrained from doing so considering the excellent bilateral ties with Turkey and the recent exchange of visits at president and prime minister level.
They said the Turkish envoy has violated certain diplomatic norms and he can be expelled as he did not give prior information to the government about arrival of the delegation and subsequently he concealed information about its programmes and schedules.
The ambassador did not inform the foreign ministry about the delegation ' s meeting with leaders of BNP and Jamaat and others as well as its visit to the ICT.
A senior official said during the meeting with acting foreign secretary, the envoy claimed that the delegation ' s visit was not sponsored by the Turkish government, but he failed to give a satisfactory reply when asked why he accompanied the team during meetings with the opposition leaders.
Asked, a senior official that despite the tension, the existing bilateral relations with Turkey will not be affected and "our cooperation in all sectors will continue".
However another foreign ministry source told The Daily Star last night that the Turkish president wrote the letter both to the president and prime minister on December 23 and the Turkish embassy sent it to foreign ministry and the ministry subsequently sent it to Bangabhaban and PMO.
Sources said the Turkish president in his one-page letter, written in Turkish language and attached with English translation, requested Zillur not to give death sentence to Ghulam Azam and other Jamaat leaders.
President Gul said they came to know former Jamaat chief Ghulam Azam is being tried at the International Crimes Tribunal. It is learnt that this 90-year-old leader might be sentenced to death. Some other elderly leaders are also facing trial, which is a matter of great concern.
According to the Turkish president, if these leaders are punished, it might affect Bangladesh ' s socio-economic advancement and cause social instability and bloodshed.
Dhaka considered Gul ' s letter as the first ever interference since the ICT was formed in 2010, the sources said.

Re: [mukto-mona] About communalism and non communalism--please see my writeup as lot peole accuse Islamists of communalism--please circulate

I don't know if my belief in God is circumstantial or what; it could be due to the fear of unknown eternity also. But, one thing I know for sure – I have no fear of God, if you are asking about that. I try to do everything right; that's all. Some people believe in almighty God, yet always claim to be victims of aggression from others.

Anyway, I don't dwell on the existence of God or its form, because I find the concept as a very powerful psychological sanctuary. The existence of God is less important when it's a conceptual entity. So, I leave it alone, and do not feel the need to abandon the idea of God. Instead, I feel strongly that - we should abandon the concept of religion altogether, which is nothing but exploitation of the image of God to serve the petty interests of religion-peddlers on this earth.

It's also not about which scientist believes in what; they are as clueless about God as any one of us. It's really a matter of personal choice. Many people do not need the concept of God, that's fine - as long as they do the right things.

Thanks. Virtually I don't see any difference between your "prayer" and a non-believer's "wish" for some thing. Fear factor probably is absent in your belief, I suppose. You would know better.

Any way, recently Higgs (predictor of the so called God particle/Goddam particle or technically called Higgs-Boson), despite he himself being a non-believer has called Richard Dawkins a fundamentalist. Dawkins himself has said that an evangelical and he himself can be matched, but the former would not revise his belief in theological theories in creationism while he will do so with the new scientific and experimental evidences.

The other day we saw the results of a survey according to which many great scientists have admitted to be believers. It is hard if not impossible to overcome the belief that has been in our psyche for centuries. Are yourself not a victim of this?

Interestingly the Nobel Laureate physicist who coined the term "God particle" preferred the name "Goddam particle" but the latter was not acceptable to the publisher of the book he wrote.

I use God whenever I need it for psychological support. I do not pray without specific need, and there is no special language or verse for prayer.

Someone was about to die of lung cancer. When the news spread, people arranged a mass-prayer session in the a temple. They asked me to join the prayer, and I did. About 200 people gathered in the temple. Everybody was praying for his recovery from this dreadful disease. I was hoping that at least someone in the crowd will be able to draw the attention of God through his/her prayer, and a miracle will occur. Two days later, I heard the news of his death.

In my view - prayer is for psychological help only. Those who attended prayer felt that they have done something for that person at the time of his need; that helped them console themselves after his death.

By the word "creed" Jung may have meant what is commonly known as "organized religion". Even those who belong to an organized religion may have quite different images or ideas of God. My father and mother, for example, had different constructs of God. While my father's connection to a God was mostly mystical and spiritual, my mother's one was a mixture of mysticism and prayers for some mundane benefits.
May I ask you some personal questions? How do you use your God? Meditate on  Him? If yes, how? Any rituals? And why do you need it any way? Do you pray? And if yes, what are your prayers? I mean what do you pray for?
I know even atheists pray or wish for things.

Well, I said make your own God because - the image of God that comes through the social training comes with a baggage, called religion. And, religions are divisive phenomena, to all in our societies, but not God, at least to most people.

So you are saying that religions and all the related rituals, etc. are man made. I agree. Is God man made or no? Are there not many Gods like religions? Yes, you have given the answer already: create your own God. But how do you distinguish this customized God from a God, for example, a specific religion? And why should one prefer a customized God to a God that he has acquired through social training?
Now let me talk about Jung. I do not think Jung had a conventional Christian God. Despite the risk involved in providing isolated quotes, I will make some quotes from Jung whenever I will deem it necessary. Jung distinguishes clearly between "creed" and "religion". "A creed gives expression to a definite colletive belief, whereas the word religion expresses a subjective relationship to a certain metaphysical, extramundane factors." "----- the meaning and purpose of religion lie in the relationship of the individual to God (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) or to the path of salvation and liberation (Buddhism)." Looks like he is O.K with a religion with God or without God. But he is advocate of infinite freedom of an individual. He does not seem to approve of the intervention of the state (example, a communist state) or a creed (example, represented by a church) in the world of an individual.
My comments are based on my understanding of the content of a 113-page small but not necessarily an easy book by Jung (ideas came when he was 83.) This seems to be a wonderful book although we may not agree with him on every assertion he made.

Yes, Jung could not negate religion because he could not think of the existence of God without religion. Most people cannot separate God and religion; it's a foreign idea to them, but – not to me. I know - religion is not created by God. How do I know? Well, if He did, there would have been only one religion, not hundreds. Therefore, when I see hundreds of religions, I immediately ask myself who created all those religions on earth, and I know who did. It's created by the human.

I alluded before, most people need a God, but do not need hundreds of religions. In my view – all those rituals, prayers, worshiping, etc. are introduced by humans, not God. God does not need any of these religious rituals and mumbo-jumbo practices. Therefore, just do the right things, and use the image of God in your own way whenever you need; you will be just fine.

"-------it can bring psychological solace from grief, emotions, and distresses."---Jiten Roy.

I cannot agree more. But are grief, emotions, and distress not major issues in human life? Jung has seen the modern man overwhelmed with all this and that's why he has not negated religion. He has rather has seen religion as a vital necessity.
I am not saying that I completely agree with Jung. However, personally I have been doing fine without a God since I realized that I do not need it 45 years ago. I have developed my own defense mechanism with moral and ethical values, ideological and political beliefs, and other branches of knowledge. As I have said before, I have been living happily with and among the believers. I do not get along well with the peddlers of religions and communalists. I never ridicule the believers although I criticize the hypocrats.

[mukto-mona] Every stone narrates a story

Every stone narrates a story

Sculptures at the Nambi Rayar Perumal temple, in Tirukkurungudi, offer a visual treat.
A place that can delight passionate supporters of art and sculptures is tucked away deep in southern Tamil Nadu not very far off from Kerala, 47 km from Palayankottai (Sri Vallabha Chaturvedimangalam in the old days). This massive 18-acre temple for Nambi Rayar Perumal, in Tirukurungudi, has held its secrets well. Even the senior scholars, relentless in their fieldwork and reach have forgotten to write a monograph. The Chitra gopuram and the main gopuram have more than 3,500 sq.ft of wooden and stone sculptures yet to be catalogued. The inscriptions are yet to be comprehensively recorded. The Chitra gopuram has outstanding stone and wooden sculptures.
To the right of the threshold one can see a series of sculptures such as a scene of traders from Arabia, with their ship, camels and other wares. The Pandya kingdom rested heavily on trade. It was therefore close to both its neighbours Kerala and Sri Lanka. Horses, spices, precious gems and metals were the key products. The area around the Tamirabarani and its tributaries formed the heart of the Pandya Kingdom. Although the capital was Madurai, food for the kingdom came from here – technically the Tamirabarani is not a perennial river but the Western Ghats ensured ample rain and therefore ample harvests. So, the most massive and prosperous temples of the kingdom were on the river banks rather than in far away Madurai.
Unique designs
The Chitra gopuram has several unique sculptures. Most are of scenes from the epics, the Bhagavatam being the most popular depiction. Others are from local legends and surprisingly for a Vishnu temple, many are of Saivite themes. The village has had a long history of accord between these two sub-sects of Hinduism. The sculptures reveal an extraordinarily imaginative sculptor who used space and lines to signify scale and movement. Much like the Chola frescoes in the Brihadeeswara temple, some sculptures tell a story and give definite clues to how the frame frozen in time will end, others are tantalisingly left to the viewers' imagination.
In the various levels of the Chitra gopuram there are more than 3,000 sq ft of carved wood. Amongst them is this unique small bass relief of two men hunting a boar with a spear. Who will win? The answer is a mystery. In one image, just a foot across, the sculptor has left a riddle that can stimulate the viewers' curiosity and interpret the image at multiple levels.
The pillars in the mandapam in front of the chitra gopuram have large images of Arjuna and others, a very common Nayaka theme. Behind these are pillars with nagabandhas – where the pillar is composed of square and octagonal blocks.
The four corners at the junction have stylised cobra heads. In one of them, the cobra is substituted with a hunched up monkey. The sculptor has conformed to the process but has not let it limit his creativity! Indeed, monkeys peer at you in this temple from all places – perhaps a reminder that our mind should not wander like a monkey's but be focused on the divine when in the temple.
Bhima unable to lift the tail of Hanuman is a well-known story in the Mahabharata. Images, however, are rare if not non-existent. The chitra gopuram has one where the sculptor has deliberately worked on the sizes to underscore Hanuman's frailness and Bhima's strength. What's more, are clouds behind Bhima, reminding us that despite him taking his tallest form to reach the skies, he was still unable to lift the tail of Hanuman.'
Famous themes
Composing forms out of other forms is a favourite theme for expert sculptors. Such sculptures are rare since it involved both imagination and flawless execution. This temple has several of them, and what is remarkable in these are the sizes, both the horse and elephant are composed of several ladies and the entire image is just one and a half feet! This is even more remarkable when we are reminded that the stone used is granite – one of the hardest stones!
Vibheeshana seeking refuge before Rama leaves for Lanka is a masterful part of the epic when Valmiki teaches us the various forms of persuasion.
Vibheeshana says, "Few volunteer to give honest and frank feedback and very few listen to it," – relevant to our times!
The sculptor has significantly shown Hanuman in front, since he was the only monkey who spoke in favour of Vibheeshana. The sculptor has also used a monkey to our left to frame the image and worked the stone to create waves in the front.
The temple has several other rare images, those of Garuda holding the tortoise and elephant in the hand and a tree with the sages meditating upside down, a man playing marbles and Sanishwara.
It's a shame that the Nambi temple at Tirukurungudi is a shrine that Tamil Nadu has forgotten – by both scholars and amateurs interested in sculptural art.
On the Shukla Paksha Ekadasi of Karthigai (November 24) the temple witnesses a dance drama done nowhere else, that may be a good excuse for a trip that will please children and adults alike, provided they spend a little time looking at the temple walls.
Quick facts
Forty Seven km from Palayankottai a massive 18 acre space has a temple for Nambi Rayar Perumal, in Tirukurungudi.
The Chitra gopuram has outstanding wooden and stone sculptures, most of them are scenes from the epics. A dance drama will be staged on November 24, on the Shukla Paksha Ekadesi, in the Tamil month of Karthigai.

[mukto-mona] Indian rape victim dies in hospital

What a shame! Castrate all of them!

-SD

Indian rape victim dies in hospital

SINGAPORE (AP) — A young Indian woman who was gang-raped and severely beaten on a bus in New Delhi died Saturday at aSingapore hospital, after her horrific ordeal galvanized Indians to demand greater protection from sexual violence that impacts thousands of women every day.
She "passed away peacefully" with her family and officials of the Indian embassy by her side," said Dr. Kevin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth hospital where she had been treated since Thursday. "The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss," he said in a statement.
He said the woman had remained in an extremely critical condition since Thursday when she was flown to Singapore from India. "Despite all efforts by a team of eight specialists in Mount Elizabeth Hospital to keep her stable, her condition continued to deteriorate over these two days. She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain. She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."
The woman and a male friend, who have not been identified, were traveling in a public bus after watching a film on the evening of Dec. 16 when they were attacked by six men who took turns to rape her. They also beat the couple and inserted an iron rod into her body resulting in severe organ damage. Both of them were then stripped and thrown off the bus, according to police.
Indian police have arrested six people in connection with the attack, which left the victim with severe internal injuries, a lung infection and brain damage. She also suffered from a heart attack while in hospital in India.
Indian High Commissioner, or ambassador, T.C.A. Raghanvan told reporters that the scale of the injuries she suffered was "very grave" and in the end it "proved too much.
He said arrangements are being made to take her body back to India
The frightening nature of the crime shocked Indians, who have come out in their thousands for almost daily demonstrations, demanding stronger protection for women and death penalty for rape, which is now punishable by a maximum life imprisonment. Women face daily harassment across India, ranging from catcalls on the streets, groping and touching in public transport to rape.
But the tragedy has forced India to confront the reality that sexually assaulted women are often blamed for the crime, which forces them to keep quiet and not report it to authorities for fear of exposing their families to ridicule. Also, police often refuse to accept complaints from those who are courageous enough to report the rapes and the rare prosecutions that reach courts drag on for years.
After 10 days at a New Delhi hospital, the victim was brought to the Mount Elizabeth hospital, which specializes in multi-organ transplant. But by late Friday, the young woman's condition had "taken a turn for the worse" and her vital signs had deteriorated. It was clear then that she would not survive long.
Indian attitudes toward rape are so entrenched that even politicians and opinion makers have often suggested that women should not go out at night or wear clothes that might be seen provocative.
Other politicians have come under fire for comments insulting the protesters and diminishing the crime.
On Friday, Abhijit Mukherjee, a national lawmaker and the son of India's president, apologized for calling the protesters "highly dented and painted" women, who go from discos to demonstrations.
"I tender my unconditional apology to all the people whose sentiments got hurt," he told NDTV news.
Separately, authorities in Punjab took action Thursday when an 18-year-old woman killed herself by drinking poison a month after she told police she was gang-raped.
State authorities suspended one police officer and fired two others on accusations they delayed investigating and taking action in the case. The three accused in the rape were only arrested Thursday night, a month after the crime was reported.
"This is a very sensitive crime, I have taken it very seriously," said Paramjit Singh Gill, a top police officer in the city of Patiala.
The Press Trust of India reported that the woman was raped Nov. 13 and reported the attack to police Nov. 27. But police harassed the girl, asked her embarrassing questions and took no action against the accused, PTI reported, citing police sources.
Authorities in the eastern state of Chhattisgarh also suspended a police officer on accusations he refused to register a rape complaint from a woman who said she had been attacked by a driver.
