[mukto-mona] Re: Wife-Beating :"why and how someone should beat his wife?

Your suggestive innuendo is quite disparaging:
Your question was "why and how someone should beat his wife? "
Please note that you mentioned "should beat" !!!!!

You are in the best position to answer your own question ... [Please do that]

Bear in mind, as you have said, (and I too emphasize) "Prophet (PBUH) never hit
his wife."...

I personally think that abuse (physical or mental) of  the wife by a husband is
totally unacceptable.

Although Surah Nisah has some allowance for ""মৃদু প্রহার" of "disobedient wife",
it (i,e beating wife)is not obligatory either.....

However, some muslim men use the text as an excuse for domestic violence.
In Bangladesh, a land of 90% muslims wife-beating for trifling matters are

What do you think ?

Note:
Always remember
(There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the right path has
become distinct from the wrong path ................).

Here is what I want you to tell me. Suppose a man came to you and said I just beat my wife up the way it is mentioned in the Quran because she didn't listen to me. He poses a question to you: "Tell me  now is this  beating done in accordance with Quran."

What would be your response?

Wife-Beating

  • But due to the dominance of Islamic instruction, these courts do not administer true justice.

Salma Akhtar 22, a housewife of district Naogaon in Bangladesh was brutally beaten by her husband on February 24. She was accused of wishing to get more institutional education. After the beating, her husband, Shohag Ali, burned her with kerosene, seriously scorching her over 90% of her skin. She is currently under treatment at the Rajshahi Hospital..
In the last two months alone, 76 cases of assaults by husbands have been published in different local dailies in Bangladesh. This practice does not happen by fits and starts; is in full swing throughout the country -- not only to wives from rural areas; sometimes even educated wives who are university graduates suffer beatings.
According to the "Bangladesh Demographic And Health Survey-2007" by the National Institute of Population Research and Training under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 60 percent of the women in Bangladesh are victims of spousal violence in the country.
The research table reports that the most widely accepted reasons for wife beating are: disobeying elders 24%; arguing with the husband 22%; going out without permission or having informed one's husband 18%, and neglecting the children 16%. Only 9% percent of women feel that denying sexual intercourse is a reason for a man to beat his wife.
On attitudes toward wife beating, the survey says, 36% of Bangladeshi man age 15-49 agree that at least one of the reasons given is sufficient justification for wife beating.
Although it is not mentioned in the survey, the progressive intellectuals in the country believe that part of this attitude is derived from and inspired by some Quranic verses. A verse (4:34), Surah An-Nisa [the women] of Qur'an says, "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient to Allah and to their husbands, and guard in the husband's absence what Allah ordered them to guard. As to those women on whose part you see ill conduct, admonish them first, next, refuse to share their beds, and finally, beat them, but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means. Surely Allah is ever most high, most great."
Most of the people in the country strongly believe that the Qur'an is the source and code of life. All the interpretation commonly claim that man are superior to women on account of the qualities with which Allah has gifted the one above the other, because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them.
The formal law on the repression of women is tight in Bangladesh. There have been some amendments; apparently now it is satisfactory to the Women Lawyers Association of Bangladesh. But the laws are not effective. With the direct and indirect help of the U.N., the Bangladesh government has established hundreds of village courts which work on family matters with the help of local representatives. But due to the dominance of Islamic instruction, these courts do not administer true justice. The Imams of the more than 250,000 Mosques in the country are ordering the locals, especially men who are arguing with their wives, to follow the orders given by Allah.

Re: [mukto-mona] A CEO raised his company's minimum wage to $70,000 a year, and some employees quit because of it

This is the best example of why socialism did not work. Income inequality cannot be reduced artificially raising salaries of the bottom earners; that will be a death nail on the future of the company.
Employers give higher salary to some employees, but not others, for good reason. They do so as incentive for outstanding performance of those employees, and as part of employee retention plan. If good employees are not rewarded, they will move on where they will be rewarded. When gap is reduced artificially, incentive to go the extra-miles for the company diminishes, and so does the productivity and the future of the company.
Only way to reduce the gap is by creating opportunities for advanced training and education for everyone, who is willing to take the advantage of. Rewarding people who do not want to take that step is nothing but diminishing the purpose of the reward.

(Gravity Payments) Gravity Payments founder and CEO Dan Price.

When Dan Price, founder and CEO of the Seattle-based credit card payment processing firm Gravity Payments, announced he was raising the company's minimum salary to $70,000 a year, he was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.
"Everyone start[ed] screaming and cheering and just going crazy," Price told Business Insider shortly after he broke the news in April.

One employee told him the raise would allow him to fly his mom out from Puerto Rico to visit him in Seattle. Another said the raise would make it possible for him to raise a family with his wife. Overnight, Price became something of a folk hero — a small-business owner taking income inequality into his own hands.

But in the weeks since then, it's become clear that not everyone is equally pleased. Among the critics? Some of Price's own employees.
The New York Times reports that two of the company's "most valued" members have left the company, "spurred in part by their view that it was unfair to double the pay of some new hires while the longest-serving staff members got small or no raises."

Maisey McMaster — once a big supporter of the plan — is one of the employees that quit. McMaster, 26, joined the company five years ago, eventually working her way up to financial manager. She put in long hours that "left little time for her husband and extended family," the Times says, but she loved the "special culture" of the place.

But while she was initially on board, helping to calculate whether the company could afford to raise salaries so drastically (the plan is a minimum of $70,000 over the course of three years), McMaster later began to have doubts.

"He gave raises to people who have the least skills and are the least equipped to do the job, and the ones who were taking on the most didn't get much of a bump," she told the Times. A fairer plan, she told the paper, would give newer employees smaller increases, along with the chance to earn a more substantial raise with more experience.

(Ronald Woan/Flickr) After announcing the policy, Price — who won Entrepreneur of the year in 2014 — became something of a folk hero.

Gravity's web developer, Grant Moran, 29, had similar concerns. While his own salary saw a bump — to $50,000, up from $41,000, in the first stage of the raise — he worried the new policy didn't reward work ethic. "Now the people who were just clocking in and out were making the same as me," he tells the Times. "It shackles high performers to less motivated team members."

He also didn't like that his salary was now so public, thanks to the media attention, and he worried that if he got used to the salary boost, he might never leave to pursue his ultimate goal of moving to a digital company. Like McMaster, Moran opted to leave.

But according to the Times, even employees who are "exhilarated by the raises" have new concerns, worrying that maybe their performances don't merit the money. (Arguably, this is evidence the increase is actually a good idea, potentially motivating people to achieve more.)

For his part, Price — who's also under fire from other local business owners and his brother, who says Price owes him money — stands by his plan, but doesn't begrudge his critics. "There's no perfect way to do this and no way to handle complex workplace issues that doesn't have any downsides or trade-offs," he tells the Times. "I came up with the best solution I could." And certainly, many of his employees agree.

[mukto-mona] ICC Must Investigate Israeli War Crimes in Gaza

<<  No Israeli official has been held accountable for Israel's indiscriminate attacks during its 2014 Gaza offensive, in which 2,251 Palestinians were killed — most of them civilians, including more than 500 children. No serious investigation has been initiated to date. Israel's internal report published last month adopts the official narrative, which whitewashes and justifies the crimes by blaming the victims. In light of the legal cover by Israel's judicial system, the ICC offers the only avenue for possible accountability. >>>
