[mukto-mona] Politics has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy. The politicians seem to be basically nicer people, but they have demonstrated often that they have the management skills of celery.  They are the kind of people who'd stop to help us change a flat, but would somehow manage to set our car on fire.  I would be reluctant to entrust them with a Cuisinart, let alone the economy.  The caretaker govt. comprised by some technocrats backed by military forces, on the other hand, would know how to fix our tire, but they wouldn't bother to stop because they'd want to be on time for Ugly Pants Night at the country club. Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

[mukto-mona] Re: Science and Religion: Reality vs. Emotion!

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48208

Discussion on science and religion is a central topic in MM for a while. MM has provided a unique platform so that variant views on Science and religion can seek common ground through ongoing dialogue. Such dialogue has become so popular that we are planning to write a Bangla Book named, "Biggan O Dhormo: Shonghat, Naki Shomonnoy?" which will be published in 2009.

For a long time, the dominant viewpoint at least among scientists and skeptics has been that science and religion are incompatible.  I belong to the first group. In recent years the opposite viewpoint has tended to be more popular (and not surprisingly, there has been quite a lot of money and media attentions available for scholars interested in arguing in favor of the pro-compatibility position as well).  Mr. Gani's thought is inline with the second group.  Nevertheless, I would like to thank Mr. Gani for penning his thought on this issue. I would also like to thank him for participating in MM forum, even though just few days ago he accused MM for following the "dumping practice".  It is quite pleasing and perhaps amusing to see his articles continuously getting published in that forum, for which he posses so much hate that he compared us with "KKK". I would be interested to know that while this "KKK forum" with the moderators having "racial attitude" is publishing his article on regular basis, how many Islamic newspaper and sites he has seen that have the courage to publish the opposing views. Anyway, after my clarification, I am sure he realized that he was wrong on his assumption. Today, I will show his recent article "Science and Religion: Reality vs. Emotion!" is also based on some flawed assumptions as well.

I have read Mr. Gani's article and many similar articles such this.  Such articles generally go in the following flow.

It starts with typical `God in Gaps' argument - tries to poke holes in science and then stuff his God into them. "Science cannot explain that, cannot do this", and then conclude, "God did this" or "There must be a place for God in science".   Thus, he accomplishes a first step of the mission of reconciling science with the supernatural.

As a second step, he will try to reconcile their particular faith with recent scientific advancements. If he is brought up in an Islamic faith, he will find Big Bang in Quran, if he is a Christian, he will find Black holes in Biblical verses, and if the person is Hindu, he will find `time dilation' in Vedic slokes etc.  After doing such `eminent research' in reconciling, he would eventually conclude that it was indeed a miracle to have the advanced scientific information in such so-and so-ancient holly books; it must be the act of God.  Here he attempts to reconcile his particular brand of religious faith with science.

Lastly, he will find eminent design and creation in every place he goes or whatever verses he reads from scripture; he would therefore justify his faith, not only on God, but also his personal brand of religion at the end.

So entire flowchart would be somewhat like the following which usually the "premise keepers" like Mr. Gani provides as their justification of belief:

God in Gaps (poke hole in science) ---> Finding Science in religious Scripture --- > ( + some design argument) ----> Justification in God and specific brand of religion.

Mr. Gani's article is typical of this kind. I will refute each step and will show that his justification of faith not at all based on sound logic.

God in Gaps:

I will start from `God in Gaps' argument. This is not an argument; this is actually an argument from ignorance: "Since we don't know how this happened, it must mean God did it." Yet ignorance is never an argument and cannot be considered evidence in any meaningful sense.  This is what Mr. Gani writes as a justification of his faith:

"Science has no room for creating something from nothing and our theory of "Infinite Density Mass and Zero Volume" theory (known as Singularity) as science describes; has many fundamental flaws….. This is not the end of the puzzle; our cosmology also has its own problem; like where does "mass" come from, at the most fundamental level?.... Science cannot answer these questions, because in the first moments of its existence the universe was probably compressed to such an extraordinary degree and consumed by the heat of a fire beyond human imagination!"

First of all, if science cannot answer "these questions", then please admit that no theology, no religion can claim to give any perfect answer either. If anything can predict come out with the proper answer, it will be science.  In fact in the past we have seen how science falsified various religious claims (six days creation, earth-centric solar system, age of earth, various fancy creation stories etc) and came out with correct answers. The old creationists take the Bible literally and are forced to conclude that much of science is wrong. However, it has been proven otherwise. Even today many religionists put "Adam Eve" story or some religious verse as an evidence to oppose evolution. However, needless to say, scientific evidences are going entirely opposite direction refuting all such fancy religious claims.

If any rational person look at the past 100 years of scientific advancement and he will notice that scientists were indeed able to solve many such puzzles which were thought to be impossible in the past. For anything cold not be explained by science was thought to be guided by supernatural causes indeed. For example it was not known before Newton how earth hangs upon nothing in space circling around the sun. Many people must have thought of a mysterious "supernatural force" behind it. However, Newton's gravitational law explained it very clearly. Ancient people even did not know the mechanism behind rainfall too. They 'created' the deity like 'Mikayel angel' or 'Indra' to explain it. However scientists now are able to explain the event through water cycle. The 'mystery' behind origin of matter is a hard one no doubt, nevertheless this mystery will indeed be solved by scientists no doubt without invoking supernatural, and this is what science always does. We depend on scientific research and explanations, and we know science has proven its ability in the past - because it works!

Anyway, origin of matter and universe is not as `divine' as Mr. Gani suggests, at least if we consider the results coming from current cosmological research.  The origin of matter has been well explained through current 'cosmic inflation' theory, suggested by Alan Guth and Linde. It shows how the universe can have formed from nothing, in complete chaos (maximum entropy), and have order form spontaneously, without violating any known principles of physics. That is, it provides an economical explanation of the origin of the universe without creation or design. A creator is not required by the data. Alan Guth has also written a book for general readers : "The inflationary Universe". Here are some other papers from scientific journal that has explained the topic in detail:

E.P. Tryon, "Is the Universe as Qunatum Fluctuation?", Nature 246

(1973): 396-97. David Atkatz and Heinz Pagels, "Origin of universe

as Quantum Tunneling effect" Physical review D25 (1982): 2065-73;

S.W. Hawking and I.G.Moss "Supercolled Phase Transitions in the very

early Universe", Physics letters B110(1982):35-38; Alexander

Vilenkin, "Creation of Universe from Nothing" Physics letters 117B

(1982) 25-28, Andre Linde, "Quantum creation of the inflationary

Universe," Letter Al Nuovo Cimento 39(1984): 401-405 etc.

These papers may serve to illustrate that serious attention to the possibility of an uncaused origin of the universe has been given by reputed physicist and published in major renowned journals. If the notion is just nonsense the papers would have never been published.

To strengthen my point I will add an excerpt from the work of Professor Victor Stenger, the Emeritus professor of physics and astronomy, University of Hawaii This is what Victor Stenger mentioned in his latest book, `God: The Failed Hypothesis—How Science Shows that God Does Not Exist' :

The universe currently contains a large amount of matter that is characterized by the physical quantity we define as mass. Prior to the twentieth century, it was believed that matter could neither be created nor destroyed, just changed from one type to another. So the very existence of matter seemed to be a miracle, a violation of the assumed law of conservation of mass that occurred just once—at the creation.

However, in his special theory of relativity published in 1905, Albert Einstein showed that matter can be created out of energy and can disappear into energy. ….So, the existence of mass in the universe violates no law of nature. It can come from energy. But, where does the energy come from? One of the most important principles of physics is the law of conservation of energy, also known as the first law of thermodynamics, which requires that energy come from somewhere. In principle, the creation hypothesis could be confirmed by the direct observation or theoretical requirement that conservation of energy was violated 13.7 billion years ago at the start of the big bang.

However, neither observations nor theory indicate this to have been the case. The first law allows energy to convert from one type to another as long as the total for a closed system remains fixed. Remarkably, the sum of the rest kinetic energies of the bodies in the early universe seems to have been exactly cancelled by the negative potential energy that results from their mutual gravitational interactions. Within small measurement errors and quantum uncertainties, the mean energy density of the universe is exactly what it should be for a universe that appeared from an initial state of zero energy.

In plain terms,  If `something' refers to the substance of universe and nothing interpreted as a state of "zero" energy, then modern physics has precisely shown that the total kinetic energy of motion for universe is exactly balanced by the negative energy of gravity. This has also been very clearly explained in Stephen Hawking's famous book "The brief history of time". This means no energy is required to "create" the universe. Again, speaking in simpler terms, if the Net energy cost of inflating universe is zero, then nothing needs to be added from outside. The energy accounting books that are internal to the system balance. In these terms, it takes no energy at all to get a universe, and no thermodynamic work needs to be done (see Guth and Steinhardt, 1989, The Inflationary Universe, New Physics etc.). BTW, the zero total energy is an observational fact. This is also the prediction of inflationary cosmology, which is strongly supported by observation too.

In one of the chapters of my Bangla book – "Alo Hate Choliyache Adharer Jatree" (2005), I  have put some insight for the general readers, which can be accessed from the following link:

http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/alo_hate/jaatree7.pdf

I have also written how matter and universe might have originated from "nothing" without violating any laws of physics. It was published in "Science world" issue:

http://www.mukto-mona.com/Articles/avijit/inflation_universe.pdf

If Mr. Gani does not believe in my word, he can check the mathematical models of the natural origin of our universe which is available in the Net.  The model is based only on the well-established theories of general relativity and quantum mechanics. These models can be presented to counter the assertion that science cannot provide any plausible explanation for the origin of the universe, as Mr. Gani claims. :

http://www.colorado.edu/philosophy/vstenger/Godless/Origin.pdf

In fact, besides the multiverse theory (chaotic inflation) two other theories are competing with each other to focus the origin of the Universe. One is the latest elaboration of Steinhardt and Turok's cyclic cosmology, spearheaded by Evgeny Buchbinder of Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, was published last December. The most radical one off course, rebel physicist Julian Barbour's  publication The End of Time—a manifesto suggesting that attempts to address what came before the Big Bang were based on a fundamental mistake. There is no need to find a solution to time's beginning, Barbour insisted, because time does not actually exist.

To Mr. Gani, not only the origin of matter, order also have a divine place. This is what he says –

`What could create orders those are not ordered?'.

Well, we know from both everyday experience and sophisticated scientific observations, order of complex systems develop from simpler systems all the time in nature—with not even low intelligence required. A mist of water vapor can freeze into a snowflake. Winds can carve out great cathedrals in rock. Brontosaurs can evolve from bacteria. Spontaneous magnetization, crystallization, formation of living cell, star formation, complex galaxy formation – all examples show how order can come from disorder naturally. Nobody claims for divine intervene.  However, Mr. Gani needs that to justify his `sound faith'.

Lastly, Mr Gani also astonished by the nature of physical laws. He says,

`Questions that religious philosophy cannot answer about the nature of existence and the origin of God; just as there are many questions that scientists cannot answer about the nature and origins of physical laws.'

Really? The perception that there are indeed eternal laws governing our universe itself is debatable. Many scientists have argued that the laws of science in its most elegant form is nothing but an intelligent construct of human mind starting from some very basic and simple, almost common sensical set of "rules". For example Physicist Victor Stenger makes that point in his article at:

http://www.colorado.edu/philosophy/vstenger/Nothing/Laws.pdf

I would also recommend Mr. Gani to read the following chapter from `God –the failed hypothesis' :

http://www.colorado.edu/philosophy/vstenger/Godless/ImpGodChapter.htm

Finding Science in religious Scripture:

In the next step, Mr. Gani cites the following verse from Quran –

`Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were of one piece, then We parted them, ....'

And eventually concludes, this "seems" to be a reference of the 'Big Bang'.

Lets analysis the verses to understand the Qur'anic creation in correct context ...

21:30  Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were of one piece, then We parted them, and we made every living thing of water? Will they not then believe?

21:31  And We have placed in the earth firm hills lest it quake with them, and We have placed therein ravines as roads that haply they may find their way.

21:32  And we have made the sky a roof withheld (from them). Yet they turn away from its portents.

For further clarification let us also quote verse from Sura Al-Rad (13:2)

Allah it is Who raised up the heavens without visible supports, then mounted the Throne, and compelled the sun and the moon to be of service, each runneth unto an appointed term; He ordereth the course; He detaileth the revelations, that haply ye may be certain of the meeting with your Lord.

It looks like a very primitive image on the relationship between the heavens and earth. After Allah raise up the heavens on unseen pillars, and put down the earth, he put the mountains on the earth to not quake, like putting a heavy thing on a piece of paper to not fly?! Allah make the sky a roof withheld to not fall on people head?! How he do so? By putting the heavens on unseen pillars!! How could one pass these as twentieth century science? Still more strange is this part of verse 21:30:…the heavens and the earth were of one piece, then we parted them, …..' If these few words are really the proof of `Big-Bang', then one may legitimately ask;  where is the mention of the huge explosion? The word `Big-Bang', itself, is very significant here. Where do we find the sign of that famous `Bang?'

Moreover, Big Bang in Physics refers to the explosion of SPACE-TIME SINGULARITY (not matter). Matter was not even created when Big Bang happened. Earth was formed billions of years after the Big Bang. The above verses are clearly referring to earth and sky being "joined" (which doesn't even have a common sense or scientific meaning) together and then being split apart (again no scientific or common sense meaning), forget about comparing it to Big Bang!

A scientifically and common sensually meaningless statement  like - "sky (heaven) and earth being joined and subsequently separated"  cannot be suggested as hinting to the scientific facts of Big Bang! In fact, why the idea is put in such form in Qur'an can be easily guessed. Such kind of idea that the heavens and earth were once joined and then separated by the activity of Gods and Goddesses was actually quite common among pagans of the Middle East. Among the Egyptians for example, it was the involuntary separation of Geb (the earth god) from his wife and sister Nut (the sky goddess) that was responsible for the division of the earth from the sky. The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh likewise describes the moment "when the heavens had been separated from the earth, when the earth had been delimited from the heavens" as a result of the separation of a sky God (An) from a earth Goddess (Ki). If you remove the pagan references, you have the same story as found in the Qur'an.

Again, from Quantum theory we know that moments after the explosion occurred, the four forces of nature; strong nuclear, weak nuclear, electromagnetic and gravity were combined as a single "super force" (Wald). Where are those indications in those verses of Qur'an? How can someone derive Hubble's Constant from those verses ? How can some one calculate red shift ? How can we measure  Doppler shifts? No answer.

If there is no answer of those scientific enquiries, how can one make himself convince  that those verses actually describing big bang, not the partition of an egg before making an omelet?

On a side note, I want to add, Nobel laureate Physicist Dr. Abdus Salam once warned us against people trying to explain Big Bang using verses from Qur'an, saying that the current version of Big Bang is the best known scientific explanation for the creation of the universe. Same concern was shown by astronomer/priest Georges-Henri LemaƮtre, who first proposed the idea of a big bang, wisely advised the Pope not to make this statement "infallible." when Pope Pius XII tried to relate Big-bang with Biblical verse. Both Salam and LemaƮtre understood the problem -what if a better scientific explanation than Big Bang is found tomorrow? Should the verses be changed to accommodate the new scientific view? Certainly it is not possible; thus it shows the inherent contradiction such attempt leads to. Religious revelations can never vindicate or falsify science. The truth or falsity of a scientific principle lies within science itself.

In fact, the creation story in Quran or Bible looks nothing like Big Bang cosmology—no matter how Mr. Gani spins it. In the Quran, the universe is a firmament and Earth is fixed and immovable (not to mention flat). In reality, the universe is expanding and Earth rotates about the sun. Both Quran and Bible claims that everything has been created in six days. From Biblical Genesis, Earth is created in the first "day," before the sun, moon, and stars. In reality, Earth did not form until nine billion years after the Big Bang and after the sun and many other stars.

Justification of religious Faith

Mr. Gani wrote in his concluding remark:

"I believe in God not to rescue myself just from the misery of death; not to justify my hedonistic desires or to triumph over the evil. I believe in a Creator (God) because I see the creation around me everyday. I see all its order, I see the existence and I see the creativity. What could create orders those are not ordered? What could create existence that does not exist? The overall philosophy of science has given me the understanding to believe that it is not within sciences realm to prove or to disprove God and also that it is wholly unscientific to believe that science in any measure discounts God and His divinity. To the contrary, science suggests the implementation of all elements of our knowledge and wisdom more advanced and forcefully than our own mind in explaining our existence. Thus it would be a brutal scientific irresponsibility if we conveniently use (abuse) philosophy of science to disprove the existence of creator (God)."

Mr. Gani cannot see how the universe came about naturally, so it must be an act of God. He cannot see how the universe became orderly by natural processes, so order must have come about by supernatural processes. In each of these cases I can give a plausible natural explanation that requires no divine actions. None can show in proving these natural explanations wrong.

Humanity and rationalism has moved beyond childhood. We no longer need to depend on imaginary fairy-tales or a mythical sky-father to provide for our needs. We can take care of ourselves. We can find ways to live our lives that are consistent with the universe revealed to us by reason and science.

But that will not satisfy Mr. Gani for sure. Mr. Gani believes in a Creator (God) because he sees the creation around him everyday. Unfortunately, I do not. If an all-good, all-powerful, and all-knowing God existed, he could posses the power to comfort a child dying an excruciating death from leukemia or cancer. He chooses not to do so. Moreover, humans cannot be held responsible for a massive flood or plague or Tsunami. In fact, we can explain such calamities only by concluding that God is malevolent, because he knew of terrible destructive events to occur. It suggests that God is impotent to prevent evil. Needless to say, this would also suggest an unintelligent, deficient, faulty or evil designer, no doubt.

Avijit

[mukto-mona] The war against Iraqi women

SAN-Feature Service

SOUTH ASIAN NEWS-FEATURE SERVICE

May 14,2008

The war against Iraqi women

Zeina Zaatari

Iraqi officials have not been willing to deal with this escalating violence against women, or even to discuss it. But, as elected representatives, they are obligated to address these crimes. So must the US

SAN-Feature Service : Iraqi women's organisations and international observers point to an escalating war against women in Iraq, aided by the widespread chaos and lawlessness under the US occupation. In addition to violence by US troops inside and outside of prisons, women in Iraq face daily violence from militants under the guise of religion and "liberation".

In Iraq's second largest city, Basra, a stronghold of conservative Shia groups, as many as 133 women were killed last year for violating "Islamic teachings" and in so-called "honour killings", according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The methods are brutal evidence of a backlash by previously subdued tribal forces that have been unleashed by the occupation: women strangled and beheaded, and their hands, arms and legs chopped off.

With US forces in Iraq now funding both Sunni and Shia tribal leaders in an effort to stabilise the country, conditions for women grow deadlier by the day. Islamist leaders have imposed new restrictions on women, including prohibitions on work, bans on travel without a muhram (male guardian), and compulsory veiling.

According to the Organisation of Women's Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), formed in Baghdad in 2003, women are harassed if they appear in the streets of most Iraqi cities and towns, educational institutions, or work places. Now there are even "no woman zones" in some southern cities controlled by Islamist parties and tribal leaders.

Honour killings of Iraqi women are justified by alleged promiscuity or adultery. In fact, the practice targets holders of PhDs, professionals, political activists, and office workers. "Politically active women, those who did not follow a strict dress code, and women human rights defenders were increasingly at risk of abuse, including by armed groups and religious extremists," Amnesty International said in its 2007 report.

Indeed, a top police official in Basra reported that as many as 15 women are killed every month in the city. Ambulance drivers in Basra, paid to "clean the streets" before people go to work, pick up many more bodies of women every morning.

Ironically, the forces leading this assault on women had little or no power under Saddam Hussein. But, following the US-led invasion in 2003, southern Iraq was opened to forces known as Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (PVPV) — militant gangs and individuals committed to archaic Islamic rule and suppression of women's rights..

Some members of these groups now serve in government, others in militias or as self-appointed vigilantes or hired guns. The goal of the PVPV is to confine women to the domestic realm and end all female participation in public and political life.

To date, Iraqi officials have not been willing to deal with this escalating violence against women, or even to discuss it. But, as elected representatives, they are obligated to address these crimes. So must the US. Under the Fourth Geneva Convention, the responsibility for protecting civilian populations in an occupied country belongs to the occupying forces, which, in this case, are clearly failing to protect Iraqi women.

Two measures are urgently needed. First, the Iraqi government must immediately establish "Protection of Women" security patrols in Iraq's southern cities. These patrols must receive gender-sensitive training and prioritise women's security over tribal or fundamentalist religious values.

Second, pursuant to its obligations under the Geneva Convention, the US must immediately take steps to protect the lives and freedoms of Iraqi civilians. Unless the US does so, it must withdraw from Iraq, because the occupation would merely continue to sustain a breeding ground for violence against women.

The timetable for action is not subject to debate. It must begin today.—SAN-Feature Service

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda yesterday said the commission will collect records of war criminals' trials under the now defunct collaborators act, in a bid to permanently disqualify war criminals from contesting in any election.

Between 1972 and 1975, 752 persons were convicted of war crimes and the government has the records. Soon after the country's independence, 37,000 persons were detained on charges of war crimes, 26,000 of whom were released on a general amnesty in 1973, keeping 11,000 still in jails on specific charges of murder, rape, arson, etc.

But after 1975, the collaborators act was scrapped stopping the trials and leading to release of all convicted and detained war criminals.

In its electoral reform proposals, the Election Commission (EC) said an individual will be permanently barred from contesting in parliamentary elections if that person was convicted of war crimes by any national or international tribunal. The same provision is likely to be proposed for local government elections too.

Besides, according to a Supreme Court order, a contesting candidate will have to submit an affidavit of personal information of eight categories including one for criminal cases filed against that person, and the verdicts in those.

"Returning officers will need the war crimes trial records to scrutinise the nomination papers, for finding out whether any of the prospective candidates has suppressed information about war crimes cases filed against him or her," the CEC told the Sector Commanders' Forum (SCF) yesterday at a meeting in the commission secretariat.

The CEC said if any candidate is proven guilty of suppressing information in the affidavit submitted to the commission, even after the person is elected to an office, that election will be cancelled.

"But we need the trial records and other documents since the Election Commission does not have any pertinent information," the CEC said.

Leaders of SCF, a platform of commanders who led the country's liberation war in eleven sectors, told the CEC that all records and evidence of war crimes have been lying on government shelves.

The forum placed a five-point proposal to the EC including one for barring war criminals from contesting in polls, and another for disqualifying anti-liberation organisations including Jamaat-e-Islami, Muslim League, and Nezam-e-Islam from being registered as parliamentary political parties.

SCF also proposed for a provision in the electoral law, asking candidates to submit affidavits of personal positions during the liberation war, and their whereabouts after the liberation war.

The veteran freedom fighters said war criminals and anti-liberation political forces should not be allowed to be in politics of the independent country under any circumstances.

"We fully agree with the proposals. We will do our best within our abilities, and make recommendations to proper authorities on matters beyond our jurisdiction," the CEC told the SCF delegation.

In response to the proposals, Election Commissioner Muhammed Sohul Hussain said the EC agrees with the SCF proposals '100 percent'. "But a legal framework is required to implement the proposals," the election commissioner said adding, "The EC will ask the government to respond to the popular demand."

At that point, the CEC said it is the jurisdiction of the government to try the war criminals.

"We don't know whether the caretaker government will try them. We will implement the legal framework if the government provides us with one," CEC Huda said.

Lauding the EC's move to disqualify war criminals from contesting in polls, SCF chief Air Vice-marshal (retd) AK Khandker enquired whether the commission will also disqualify anti-liberation organised forces from being registered as parliamentary parties.

In reply, the CEC said some political parties had been banned in the immediate aftermath of the country's independence, but later, the ban was withdrawn allowing the parties to resume their activities.

Referring to the EC proposed conditions for political parties' registration, the poll chief assured the veteran freedom fighters saying, a political party will not get registration if the party's constitution contains any provision that goes against the spirit of the country's constitution.

The SCF delegation which included Maj Gen (retd) KM Shafiullah, Lt Gen (retd) Mir Shawkat Ali, Maj Gen (retd) CR Dutta, Maj (retd) Rafiqul Islam, and Lt Gen (retd) M Harun Ar Rashid, was led by AK Khandker.

Meanwhile, War Crimes Facts Finding Committee (WCFFC), a research organisation, also put forward similar demands to the EC on Saturday.

WCFFC also demanded that the EC makes it mandatory for prospective candidates to disclose their whereabouts during the country's war of independence, if their names were included in the Bangladesh Gazette (Extra Ordinary) under Bangladesh Collaborators (Special Tribunals) Order 1972, if they were in hiding to avoid arrest following their indictment in any case under the order, and detailed information regarding the cases against them.

The research organisation also urged the EC to form a tribunal for disqualifying war criminals from contesting in polls.

Re: [mukto-mona] Aparthib's Quantum Analogy

IRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto- mona/message/48200

A few days back I commented that because of the flaws in the education system the students and others may have to face such unhappy situations. Now I want to supplement my previous comment by adding that our recruiting and incentive systems have also flaws because of which right people are not always at right places. Brain drain is an unfortunate product of this. I heard (cannot verify it) that after completing his PhD from Cornell Sanjay Sarkar went to Dhaka (the last time that I met him) and tried for a position in the Dhaka University. Unfortunately, there was no vacancy. I have no problem in believing this rumor. He was pretty emotional. Like some other bright students (example, Dr. Nabi who now lives in NY), he also took arms and joined liberation struggle.

[ALOCHONA] Summary of the Book “India Doctrine” written by Barrister MBI Munshi

Summary of the Book "India Doctrine" written by Barrister MBI Munshi

By S A Hannan

In India Doctrine, the writer Mr. Munshi has tried to lay emphasis on the point that India from the very beginning has been pursuing a policy of establishing hegemony in the region.

Mr. Munshi through evidences, arguments and her practices has tried to prove that the intentions of India are nothing short of this. To materialize India's objective the EU and the USA have also joined hands with her. The USA has concluded a treaty for cooperation in the nuclear field with India although it (USA) propagates non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

This nuclear agreement she did to contain the Chinese influence in the South Asian region. This is a direct threat to peace in the region. Besides the propaganda onslaught against Bangladesh and other countries here through some persons and media is on. The visit of Shaikh Hasina to India in 2003 and again in 2005, were of considerable significance. The 2007 election was also important for them since it was the desire of India that Awami League should come into power. The insurgency in Chittagong Hill Tracts was creation of India. In brief India has been instrumental in destabilizing situation in Bangladesh as well as in other countries of the South Asian region like Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka etc.

The book says India was partitioned in 1947 but India followed the undeclared policy of re-unification or Akhand Bharat since then. The skirmishes along the borders, the unabated killing of innocent civilians of Bangladesh, insurgencies in Nepal, Pakistan (Baluchistan) Sri Lanka are pointer towards this.

India does not believe in two nation theory since they consider that there are other common cultural, ethnic grounds for forming a nation. India viewed emergence of Bangladesh as an independent state which negates the division on the basis of religion.

Nehru's ideology centred round non-partition of India or the Akhand Bharat as detailed in his book, "The discovery of India" (1947). And this policy has been followed subsequently even after partition in 1947. Nehru/ruled from 1947 to 1964 and his successors were no different from him. The situation of Sikkim in 1973-75 was similar to that of Nepal's in 2006. In both cases the rulers were over thrown. The former became a constituent part of India while the latter (Nepal) began to be ruled by the persons of choice of India.

As regard Pakistan, Indira Gandhi at a public meeting on Nov, 30, 1970 observed, "India has never reconciled with the existence of Pakistan, Indian leaders always believed that Pakistan should not have been created and that Pakistan nation has no right exist".

The book says that, keeping the above in view it could be said that India's role in 1971 war to help Bangladesh was according to her own policy consideration of Akhand Bharat. The later events like looting and taking away of military equipments after Pakistanis were defeated, unequal distribution of Farraka water, killing of Bangladeshis at the borders, inciting insurgencies within Bangladesh territories, indirect interference in shaping Bangladesh foreign policy, creating problem for garment industries etc. loudly speak of the Indian intentions.

The book says that, Henry Kissinger, the then National Security Advisor and Secretary of State thought that India's help for the then East Pakistanis in their struggle for liberation was purely motivated by self-interest guided by the dream of claiming of all territories ruled by the former British colonial power. J. N. Dixit, the vet-ran diplomat in his book, "Liberation and beyond", gives the impression that it was Pakistan which wanted to break India and created condition in the former East Pakistan to make a cause to attack India. This is an absurd proposition for it was India which impeded the return of refugees when a political settlement was in the offing in the later part of 1971. Further, after 9/11, there were sufficient reasons to believe that India instigated insurgences through JMB out-fit as the confessional statement of its deceased leader proved. This was done to tarnish the image of Bangladesh as a terrorist state.

After liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, India started propaganda offensive both within and out side India against Bangladesh. Noted left leaning writers are on their pay rolls in Bangladesh. This is done to materialize their goal of Akhand Bharat. Hence it is felt necessary that against their propaganda offensive, RAW's clandestine activities, counter offensive both through media measures and active intelligence surveillance are must.

The book says that the six points became a great plea for going into a tougher movement. Had that been accepted, it was presumed that Pakistan would not have broken and nor independent Bangladesh emerged in 1971. After 1971, India became more active to make the newly emerged state its part. For this she appointed Chittarangan Sutar as Shaikh Saheb's representative in India. Sutar had direct access to Indian Prime Minister and other high officials there. His plans however failed following assassination of Shaikh Saheb in August 1975.

India entered into a 7 point agreement with the then Bangladesh government in exile (located in Calcutta) which contained provisions like no standing army for Bangladesh, Joint forces for Bangladesh with the command lying with the Indian Army Chief, identical foreign policy etc. The defeat of Pakistani army and its surrender to the Indian General, (Sans Bangladesh Army Chief) and the terms having never been shown to Bangladesh, apparently spoke that virtually Bangladesh belonged to India since India won the war with Pakistan and took its soldiers captive. The Mujib Bahini, the Rakhi Bahini etc. were created to seek their assistance in consolidating the Indian Government's authority in Bangladesh and also to use them when the appropriate time had come as thought by India. Their authority was further strengthened by the 25 years treaty of friendship which also fortified the 7 point agreement made by the government in exile. As said before the plan of subordinating Bangladesh failed following assassination of Shaikh Saheb. India could have walked over but restrained itself for fear of international condemnation etc. It however continued its effort to destabilize it and others by harboring insurgencies through RAW and other agencies in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka Nepal and Pakistan. The insurgencies in Chittagong Hill Tracts are worth mentioning.

The book has been further enriched by the valuable contributions from the eminent writers of both home and abroad. Professor Khodeja Begum in her article laid emphasis on the India's concept of Akhand Bharat or united India quoting authentic references like the 7 point agreement made between Indian government and Bangladesh government in exile. She also quoted the Ananda Bazar Patrika's observation following 1991 election. The Patrika said that the people in Bangladesh should raise their voice for merger with India. Brig Gen (Retd) Shakhawat laid emphasis on geopolitical condition of Bangladesh and suggested for careful move for making relationship with USA, China and more importantly India.

Other Nepalese and Sri Lanka writers have also blamed India for inciting insurgencies and instability in the neighboring countries. Maoists in Nepal and LTTE in Sri Lanka are the beneficiaries of the Indian government.
