[mukto-mona] As We go marching, marching :We bring the greater days

As we go marching, marching
We bring the greater days
For the rising of the women
Means the rising of the race
No more the drudge and idler
Ten that toil where one reposes
But the sharing of life's glories
Bread and roses, bread and roses

The lyrics were written in 1910, but the message for women in the great labour song Bread and Roses is as true today as it was ninety-seven years ago: we march "for greater days" and "the rising of the women".

On March 8, we mark International Women's Day. It's a moment of both reflection and solidarity. Yes, what women have been able to achieve in terms of equality needs to be celebrated, but not as a static point. It's simply one step in a long march to "greater days".

It's also important to remember that those achievements were never granted. They were the result of enormous struggle, often over many decades. They were won at bargaining tables, through legislative change and dedicated political action on the part of millions of women, not just in Bangladesh, but around the world. We shall not forget that "Women is key to ending hunger".

So this March 8, I will be joining women to not just remember what we have gained, but mobilize to build on that success, to make sure our voices are heard, to march "for greater days" and "the rising of the women".

[mukto-mona] Fwd: Today's Statesman mentions detained activist Dr Binayak Sen

prabir chatterjee <prabirkc@yahoo.com> wrote:

194113
THE SATURDAY INTERVIEW
Beyond the Red Corridor
Sudeep Chakravarti began his career in journalism with The Asian Wall Street
Journal. He subsequently worked at Sunday, India Today, and Hindustan
Times and is presently Editor-at-large with Rolling Stone.
Following his debut novel Tin Fish (2005), Mr Chakravarti has recently
published Red Sun: Travels in Naxalite Country, an itinerant description of
Maoist realities in India that exposes individual apathy, bureaucratic farce,
endemic corruption, armed rebellion, and state sponsored atrocities. Mr
Chakravarti spoke to SHIV KARAN SINGH.
Excerpts:
What made you decide to write Red Sun?
Three key reasons. The first is that, Red Sun was a story waiting to be told.
There is a fairly large and excellent body of writing on the Naxalite movement
of the 1960s and early 1970s, and various subsequent extreme-Left
incarnations through the 1980s. But besides the occasional writing and
display in media around the time of major skirmishing between rebels and
security forces, there isn't a book on the movements of today as driven by CPI
(Maoist) that attempts to demystify it. The second reason: there is a great
lack of telling the human story about the present play of Left-wing rebellion.
Typically, one comes by statistics and glib sound bites. The dispossessed
and the dead are not numbers; they were ~ and are ~ people. With Red Sun I
have attempted to humanise a very tragic conflict, one of a country at war with
itself. There is no "foreign hand", no xenophobia to feed on, no fingers to point
anywhere but at ourselves, at the abysmal failure of governance, stunning
apathy and callousness of our rulers and administrators, and the indelibility of
how badly we treat our own people. A third reason is that learned writing about
Maoism in India (it continues to be interchangeably referred to as Naxalism) is
generally restricted to academic journals and analysis by think tanks. There is
a crying need to mainstream the discussion, tell the lay reader, as it were,
about what is going on, shake Middle India out of its mall-stupor, and diminish
the delusions of grandeur of India's lawmakers.
To certain disaffected, Maoism provides a structured process for armed
rebellion, not a strategy of rule. What could be the ramifications of this if
Maoists were to increase areas under their control?
History shows us that it's usually easier to rebel than to rule. It has happened
in every ancient civilisation and nearly every modern one-barring, possibly and
notably, the United States. Mao is as good an example as any. He brought off
a stunning rebellion, ruthlessly united a country, and then ruled it at whim.
Nepal is today dealing not merely with the absence of war, but the chaos of
peace, reconciliation and a scheming monarchy. But history moves on, as it
has in Russia, China, and it will in Nepal. In India, Maoist rebellion ~ indeed,
any rebellion, conceivably even a Dalit one ~ is and will surely continue to
provide impetus to change. The wise ought to see the writing on the wall and
ensure socio-economic, administrative and judicial delivery so that Mao and
his principles needn't have to show the way in India. Until this happens,
rebellion in India is a no-brainer. We have asked for it.
With the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act, 2006, and the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act, 2004, the arms of the state have put a gag on
human rights voices and media. Dr Binayak Sen still languishes in jail. Why is
the state government eliminating the middle ground, i.e. people actually
providing essential services to the local population?
To my mind, Dr Sen's imprisonment is nothing but a paranoid reaction of the
state. It's a classic tactic of retaliation to focus on "soft" targets in order to
divert attention from real failures ~ of governance, administration, policing, and
socio-economic development. In addition, there is the grinding exploitation of
tribals and the poor that no amount of finessing or propaganda can hide. The
government of Chhattisgarh is now engaged in denying legitimate NGOs space
to function in rural areas. It's a stupid, knee-jerk strategy that will bring
immense harm. Besides further fracturing society, it will only serve to escalate
the conflict. The Chhattisgarh government is quite obtuse; even looking at
things from their point of view, they do not appear to realise that the longer
they incarcerate Dr Sen, the more people who normally would not be
empathetic to the cause of left-wing revolution would be drawn to it.
If Salwa Judum is not a spontaneous uprising, what is it? Why is it only
restricted to Chhattisgarh?
The truth about Salwa Judum is that it is not spontaneous. It is a monster
created cynically from a real grouse that some tribal people and farmers
harboured against the heavy-handedness of Maoists in the area. The
government tapped into this partial resentment and created Salwa Judum with
state support ~ financial, logistical and moral. But by setting brother against
brother, Chhattisgarh has created a situation of mutually assured destruction
of tribals. Homes are razed, lands are lost, livelihoods are destroyed, and
futures erased. The chaos that Salwa Judum has caused is perhaps the only
reason that has kept other states from employing similar methods as strategy.
Senior policemen, intelligence officials and security experts have told me
Salwa Judum is a no-hoper. But Chhattisgarh can't retract it; it has become a
prestige issue, a noose.
Is government reaction in Chattisgarh a realisation of people's deprivation or a
desire to wrest back areas rich in resources? In other words, are we
witnessing another instance of "disaster capitalism", i.e. accelerating a crisis
with violence, to weaken the control of local populations over resources, in
order to ultimately privatise the same?
Absolutely. And I say this as a person, journalist and writer with no left-wing
credentials whatsoever.
Are surrendered Maoists a reality?
Yes and no. In certain states ~ Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh ~ it is a
partial reality, where Maoists come above ground for personal reasons, which
could range from illness to intimidation to plain battle fatigue. It's happening a
bit in Orissa. The key really is to ensure effective rehabilitation in these cases,
or there will inevitably be a backslide into cynicism, resumption of arms or
even, sending out a signal to Maoist cadres that the state is not serious, and
"surrender" is just an euphemism for "give up your arms and go back to being
oppressed."
In states such as Chhattisgarh, surrender is mostly a cynical farce, as is
much the case with just about everything in that state related to Maoism. Even
BJP legislators have trashed the claim of the state government on surrendered
Maoists as being little more than hogwash. In one famous instance from a
couple of years ago, a BJP MP claimed he personally knew some of the
"surrendered" Maoists as they happened to be BJP cadres! Each state to
one's own, evidently.
The time of shokher Naxals has passed. What are the present realities of
inequality, disaffection, and Maoism in Bengal?
The shokher Naxals, as well as the present-day Maoists, are driven by similar
things: outrage against state apathy and grotesque inefficiencies in our
society. Perhaps the government of West Bengal needs to consider that the
districts most affected by Maoism in the state are also the ones fairly
untouched by land reform measures ~ a key reason for the success of CPI
(M)-led political domination of West Bengal. Having said that, and also
accounting for the fact of the recent capture of Somen, the CPI (Maoist) leader
in West Bengal, the state could, in the near to medium term future, see an
upsurge in Maoist violence. This is expected in and around Kolkata, as well as
the districts from north to south bordering Bangladesh. In the throes of new
flyovers, condominiums and a handful of info-tech campuses, perhaps the
masters of West Bengal need to consider a brutal truth: there is wretched rural
and urban poverty and inequity in the state. And this time around, a far more
deliberate group of rebels are preparing to leverage these infirmities. The intent
isn't shokh, but shock.
Your book on continuing subversion, and violence, against and by the state, is
now available in elite bookstores. Would you not describe this as apt,
considering the nature of the issue?
It is entirely apt, and entirely natural. Red Sun is available at large bookstores
as well as small ones, places where the elite and the not purchase books. The
story of Red Sun is for everyone to read, and should ideally be available
everywhere. I sincerely hope it is translated soon into various Indian
languages; that would be appropriate ~ perhaps even necessary. The story
needs to go beyond English. The point to remember is that Red Sun is not
"elite". It's the truth about today, a reality check, a story of the great shame
that India carries today, a country of stupendous economic growth and verve,
and equally, overwhelming poverty, oppression and corruption. A country
where common people are driven to take to the gun for justice and redress that
is their constitutional right but is denied to them by the state machinery. I
would urge the "elite" to read Red Sun, if only to realise how much further India
needs to travel for even a semblance of spreading equity in development. It's
what corporations practice as a matter of routine for its shareholders; why
can't a country, for its citizens?

Subimal,

In American context, the difference between Secularist and Atheist
is minor.

You can change your view about religion or disban your religion,
which no one but you know. People around you still identify you by
your name, appearance, culture, etc. You could be an atheist, you
will still be identified as a Hindu, because of your name, and some
people in Bangladesh will still call you Malaun.

Thanks.

Mr. Ahmed,

This test will not accommodate so called Liberal and Conservative in
the context of Indo-Bangladesh, where conservatives mean you a
religious person. This is to identify American Liberals and
Conservatives. You can test yourselves using these questions.
Conservative in America does not mean you have to be a religious
person. Michael Savage is a US Nationalist, does not care about
anywhere else.

Thanks.

[mukto-mona] Re: “Liberal or Conservative Test?”: Attn: Dr. Jiten Roy

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46945

Mr. Ghani,

What are you saying, Mr. Ghani? Your answer consists of 4 NO, how
come you do not want to call yourselve a Conservative. Something
must not be right. I know, you are definitely different from those
people who score 4-5 YES. Please remember, my context is American
society, not Middle Eastern, or South Asian (Bangladesh, India, Sri
Lanka, and Pakistan). In these regions, conservative means religious
person. In there, everything revolves around religion. In America,
most conservatives are not religious. I am not a religious person
myself, yet my answer will be 5 NO, and I am a proud conservatives.
You have raised some good questions, about RIGHT and WRONG, which we
should discuss later.

Regards,

Jiten Roy

One of the founders of Yahoo is of Asian descent. The chip
manufacturing company, Intel, has many scientists from Asia. Have
they not made any contributions? Dr. Roy lives in New York City;
therefore, he only sees cab driver, grocery store owners, restaurant
workers, etc. Immigrants do live in college towns, and in small
cities. There, many hard working immigrants are contributing very
positively to their respective communities. Come to think of it,
Dr. H. Govind Khorana, an immigrant from India lived in Madison
Wisconsin in the mid 1960s. He contributed in the field of
Biochemistry and received the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology
in 1968. Prof. Fazle Hussein of Bangladesh who teaches at Univ. of
Houston has made contribution in his field. Therefore, Dr. Roy has
to look outside NYC to find immigrants who have served the American
society. Let us be proud of these overachievers.

Mexican immigrants come here not to become American, although they
say so when you ask. They are here to impose their culture and way
of life on to others, just like other recent immigrants from
elsewhere. You have seen on TV, when maxicans were demonstrating for
immigration status, they were carrying thousands of mexican flags,
very few American flag were seen. Later on, when everybody started
to criticize them in the media, they were showing American flags
also. What that tells you?

Bangladeshi Americans are contesting in the National election in
Bangladesh. They have their own political parties, cultural parties,
etc., here. They have everything they need to lead a Bangladeshi
life in America. They are American in the papers; Bangladeshi in the
heart. Why they will try to become American?

Chinese Americans have built Chinese markets everywhere, where all
signs are written in Chinese. They are so many in number that they
do not need other American customers. You have heard that national
security and defense secrets were smuggled to china by chinese
immigrants working in the government. Where are you going to find
trusted Americans when whites become minority in 2050?

I do not have to tell you that mosques and madrasas are breeding
grounds for suicide bombers and terrorists. Thousands of mosques and
madrassas are sprouting everywhere.

These are just a few examples.

I'm not living in the past; I'm living in the future. That's not the
point; the point is you have everything but what good they are if
you cannot enjoy them in the future?

You must know what both of these candidates are saying. They are
pandaring to the poor and middle-class people, who constitute
majority vote bank, to get votes. It is easy to promise heven for
middle class, but difficult to do. What both of these candidates are
promising is impractical to deliver.

For example, Barak Hossein Obama introduced class war fare in
America. He is saying that, he will rein in corporations by taxing
them havily to give middle class a tax break. Now, let's examine.
What is a corporation? It is the provider of job and healthcare for
millions of middle class and upper-class people. If my corporation
does not do well due to OBAMA PLAN, I could get laid off heavily or
leave USA. In that case, Ilose my pension, and health care. What
good middle-class tax break will do if they do not have a job to go
to.

Under republican plan with tax break for corporations, they will do
well, and company could expand and hire more people. I could get a
raise at the end of the year or I could also have a better option
for my healthcare provider.
>
Now Hillary Healthcare: She wants to rein in Phermaceutical
companies and corporations as well. If she does that, Phermaceutical
companies will leave USA, and go to Canada or elsewhere. Where those
millions of employees they leave behind will go? They do not have to
go to work; Hillary will provide them healthcare and food stamp.
That's her plan.

Democrates like big-government entitlement programs, just like
Socialists do. They exploit down-trodden people's sentiment. Their
politics revolves aroud poor people. They need poor people in the
society for supporting them, and their programs will make sure that
poor people remains poor forever.

Republicans, on the contrary, need support from the rich, and
therefore, their programs will be geared towards making poor people
rich. Their programs can provide the lift the poor need to be rich.
If poor people get a decent job, they can buy healthcare themselves.
Government provided healthcare can never be good quality. What poor
people need is a job, not a healthcare without a job.

Now you see, Latino gang, Chinese gang, Indian gang, Salvadoran
gang, Mexican gang, Pakistani gang, etc. on top of Italian mafia.
When you say don't worry, America is a vast country, you are really
trying to avoid problems. Soon it will be Tsunami, and you will not
find time to run away from it.

You said it, "America is still a nice place." But for how long? I
want to keep it a nice place indefinitely. American conservatives
are the people who can keep it thatway longer, not liberals.

Perhaps you are watching CNN's Lou Dobbs program way too much.
Newscasters such as Lou Dobbs, Rush Limbaugh, etc., are true fear
mongers. Dr. Roy, do you know that without the labor of illegal
Hispanics in New Orleans area our reconstruction work would not have
been possible. My house was almost destroyed by hurricane Katrina
led 8 feet of water. The roof was damaged too. The Hispanics were
God-sent. They did all the work for white contractor and in the
process the Caucasian contractors made money hand over fist.
Sitting in the Big Apple you have no idea how the Hispanics are
shaping the future of America. Get real, Dr. Roy? In 50 years time
Hispanics will surpass the whites in terms of population.

So, you agree, that in 50 years Hispanics will surpass whites, and
it should be stopped. Mexicans still want their land back, which is
part of Texas, Arizona, and California. You want to give it away?
This time they will capture that land without war. Just wait and see.

As long as homosexuals keep it to themselves, why should it bother
you and me?

Reply (JR):
That's the problem - homosexuals are not going to keep it to
themselves. They want the same recognition, same social status, same
rights, etc. as the heterosexuals. Haven't you seen, when they kiss
publicly, embrace publicly, and parade wearing half naked dresses on
the 5th Ave to observe Gay Pride day.

decide whether they should have babies or not. Infanticide is a
serious problem in South Asia. Are you aware of it?

Which means, you support killing unborn babies, just because you do
not want them. Of course a couple should decide whether they want a
baby or not, before babies are conceived, not after.

about the erotic pictures so gracefully adorning the Mandir allover
India, Dr. Roy? Or, is it the Playboy or the likes of it that you
abhor?

Reply (JR):

You do not know me at all. How could you make a definitive judgemnet
about my liking of Playboy Magazine? I thought you are mature enough
to carry out a civilized conversation. You have a habit of poking
others with unnecessary and unrelated inferences just to make them
angry at you. Every answer you give should have a personal attack.
How old are you? You seem to be very immature individual. You like
to play cat and mouse game, isn't it?

> 5.. What is the definition of an ideal family, Dr. Roy? South
Asian people have no problem watching seductive Bollywood films
three-generations sitting in the same room. Before criticizing the
westerners please look into our culture first.

Reply (JR):
Definition is very simple: To raise a child in a perfect family
environment, you need the presence of a father and a mother. Child
needs influence from both parents. That's called a perfect family.

Of course there are single family, consisting of a father or a
mother. Would you consider that a perfect environment for a child to
grow up? How about gay or lesbian family raising a child? Is that a
perfect environment to bring up a child? This is what I am talking
about.

[ALOCHONA] Funny US declaration

Dear all,

The US has declared "Horkatul Zihad" of Bangladesh an "International terrorist group". I don't remember any international terrorism by this group or any such threatening statement. So, why the US declared as such? Are they trying to put us under pressure to take advantage(s)? Is it the election?

JitenDa
1. Thanks for sitting late hours into night to kindly respond to my e-mail.
2. According to Chambers one of the meanings of the word "secularism" is "the belief that the state, morals, education, etc. should be independent of religion." Basically, to me it sounds like the principle of the separation of the church from the state. A communist, atheist, believer, etc. has nothing to do with it. And we can accept this as a universal definition, although the extent of secularism will vary from culture to culture.
3. It does not matter with what religious identity you are born. As you grow older, your views and philosophy about life may change. A person born Hindu may turn into an atheist and there is nothing wrong with that if does not lose his human qualities after being an atheist. We need a good human being.

[mukto-mona] Re: Dr. Jaffor & Avijit, please don't lost your sense

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/46930

Sitangshu Guha has now no worthy points other than attacking me and
equating me with 'communists'. The readers who are familiar with my
writing know pretty well that I am not a communist and never was. In
fact on many occasions I debated with the communists. It was really
amusing to see the desperate zeal of Mr. Guha.

In fact it was Mr. Guha who came with the argument that he did not
see any freethikers and liberals speaking for the minorities of
Bangladesh. I had given a lot of referenses in my previous post. I
did not see Mr. Guha refuting those facts. If we freethinkers did not
speak for minority oppression in Bangladesh, who really did, I
wonder? Our whole website is the proof of our stand. I dont know
which universe Mr. Guha lives in!

Not only about the minority rights in Bangladesh, we mukto-monas
showed our voice against all kinds of social injustices, religious
and oppressive dogmas, doctrines, and discriminations thruout the
past. Lest Mr. Guha forgets this, the better for him as always.

[mukto-mona] Israeli MP raps Arabs at Knesset

MK Lieberman holds Arab members of Knesset responsible for the recent attack in Jerusalem by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies 8 Mar 08 (http://www.imemc.org/article/53334)
On Friday, Member of Knesset Avigdor Lieberman, a leader in the extremist Yisrael Beiteinu party, stated that Arab members of Knesset were to blame for the recent attack on a religious school in Jerusalem. MK Lieberman is known for his extreme views including advocating the forced expulsion of ethnic Arabs from Israel and the Occupied Territories.
Lieberman stated that "the incitement carried out by Arab members of Knesset, encouraged an Arab resident of Israel, bearing an Israeli identity card, to carry out this attack."
Talking to the Israeli online daily, Ynetnews, Lieberman said that "Israel is drowning in a wave of terrorism, as Qassam shells are continuously fired at Sderot and Ashkelon, and the most dangerous attack which was carried on Thursday in Jerusalem."
He added that Arab members of Knesset are to be held responsible for the Jerusalem attack since, according to Lieberman, they incite against Israel and collaborate with the leaders of terrorist organizations.  Lieberman also considers mass protests by Israeli Arabs against the ongoing Israeli killings and shelling of Gaza as illegal and supporting "terrorist crimes against humanity."  The protests he referred to were in the town Um Al Fahim.
Liebreman goes on to demand that the Israeli government outlaws several Arab political parties in Israel, "especially parties that reject recognizing Israel as a Zionist Jewish State," and added that leaders of these parties "seek to destroy Israel as a Jewish state".
He accused several Arab parties in Israel of collaborating with "terrorist organizations" and "enemies of Israel," adding that this "without any doubt, facilitated the attack in Jerusalem."
Commenting on the statements of Lieberman, Arab member of Knesset Jamal Zahalka said that these statements are incitement for killing the Arabs and should not be ignored.
Zahalka added that Lieberman represents "organized terrorism," and "Arabs in Israel represent the struggle for freedom, equality and a just peace."  He also stated that Israeli laws against racism are only "ink on paper" and points to the fact that Lieberman has not been held responsible for his racist comments against the Arabs in the past.
"Racism is not part of the freedom of expression," Zahalka said, "It is a criminal act punishable by law."
Meanwhile, MK Effi Eitam, from the religious Zionist Mafdal party, said that he will file a complaint to the government's legal adviser against the Arab members of Knesset who participated in a protest against the Israeli attacks in Gaza.  He added that this protest is "an incitement to murder" and that those legislators should be stripped of their residency rights.
Arieh Eldad, also from the Mafdal party, demanded the government to expel the family of the man who carried the Jerusalem attack.  Zbolon Orelev, another party member, echoed this sentiment calling for the family to be expelled to Gaza.

well said Audrey. You have spoken my mind:

* Extremists believe homosexuals are not worthy of respect.

* Extremists believe that only their culture, or the culture they
admire, matters.

* Extremists believe that they have the right to tell a woman what
to do with her body.

* Extremists believe they can stop others from doing the things they
do themselves because they are not like the others.

* Extremists believe in the myth that there used to be ideal
families.

Dear JR:
Let's keep it, rather, simple: when you quoted Michael Savage having
said that "liberalism is a mental disorder"; what type of liberals
did you have in mind exactly? M. Savage is unlikley to target those
liberals of "Indo-Bangla" origin whom you have described as
the "hypocrites" (not that I quite diasgree on that).

[mukto-mona] Obama in better shape in PA. [ref. AP latest]

Enthusiasm tilts toward Obama in Pa.
By MICHAEL RUBINKAM, Associated Press WriterFri Mar 7, 4:10 AM ET

For Edwin David, who served with the famed World War II unit of black fighters known as the Tuskegee Airmen, Sen. Barack Obama is an easy choice.
"Just let me live till voting time in November," said David, 83, living in retirement in the Pocono Mountains. "In my lifetime, we just might get to see the first African-American president of the United States!"
Fresh from victories in the big states of Ohio and Texas, and with polls having shown her holding the lead here, even if it has dwindled, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton starts her campaign in Pennsylvania as the favorite to win the April 22 primary.
But in random interviews last week with dozens of voters in swing districts across the state, much of the Democratic voter enthusiasm seemed to tilt toward Obama, not only because he is a fresh face, but because they believe he has the best shot at beating Republican nominee-in-waiting John McCain, whom they call old and out-of-touch.
But unlike David, many said it wasn't an easy decision.
Kate Clark, 53, a cafe owner in Nazareth, a small town near Allentown, said she struggled with her choice. Tempted to vote for Clinton because of her gender, she said Obama's energy and vision ultimately won out.
"I think we need to see the United States and see the world through eyes that are younger, through eyes that have dreams, through eyes that see something new for the nation," Clark said.
Clark said she worries about the health of the environment — and the economy. Fewer people are walking through the doors of her quaint eatery now than at any time since it opened 11 years ago.
"People are afraid. The five dollars that they have is being spent on gas, on food," she said. "Everyone's tight with cash."
On the other hand, Clinton supporter Carol Velez, 52, of Norristown, in the Philadelphia suburbs, calls Obama "a glorified preacher."
"His words are not his actions," said Velez, who works in sales. "His plan is not a reality. It's just what people want to hear."
Clinton, she said, "is totally qualified and experienced."
Republicans still hold the edge in voter registration in the Philadelphia suburbs, but steady Democratic gains and voters' willingness to cross party lines in that largely white-collar region have made it crucial to Democrats. The city itself contains the state's largest concentration of Democratic voters, and its large black population is expected to give Obama an advantage there.
Clinton is expected to run stronger in northeastern Pennsylvania, with its mix of blue-collar, culturally conservative voters around Scranton and the growing number of New York commuters who are moving in the Pocono Mountains region; and the Pittsburgh region in southwestern Pennsylvania.
In Nazareth, about 60 miles north of Philadelphia, grocery-store manager Terry LaBar said he's undecided between Clinton and Obama. He wants to see them in the flesh before making up his mind.
"I think it's time that maybe a woman gets in there and expresses her views and has a chance," said Labar, who is married with two teenage children. On the other hand, he said, Obama represents a break with the past. "I'm always looking for new things to happen."
Another undecided Democrat is Tom Ciesielski, 43, who owns a pet food store in the Pittsburgh suburb of McCandless.
He might vote for Clinton because a win would put her husband, the former president, back in the White House too: "I like Bill Clinton. Life was good with Clinton."
But Obama, Ciesielski said, would be a uniter: "Obama seems like he would bring the world back together. We travel a lot and, man, everyone hates us because of the (Iraq) war."
Only Democrats can vote in the state's Democratic primary. The campaigns have until March 24 to sign up new party members from the 984,000 registered voters who are not members of either major party, or from potential defectors among the 3.2 million Republicans or Pennsylvanians who are not registered to vote.
Among black Democrats, there is an undeniable sense of pride that Obama could be the first black president.
Single mother Kenya Howard, 32, lists health care as her biggest day-to-day concern. Unemployed and uninsured, she avoids going to the doctor because it costs $50 for a visit. She likes Obama's health plan, but that is not the primary reason why she is supporting him.
"A good portion of it is because he's black," said Howard, of Allentown. "I think a lot of black people would say that."
