As a matter of interest, could you please specifically advise which other dams BNP government allowed to be constructed in India at the detriment of Bangladesh's interest ? Also, when and how BNP government gave up big chunks of Sundarban ? It will be really useful to have these information available to form a better perspective of the situation.

it is amazing to me that these right-wing dingbats still continue to spread fact less rubbish. AL govt. is by no means perfect, but it was the BNP govt. that allowed construction of several other dams in India, allowed water allocation and reservation, almost gave up big chunks of the Sundarban, and I can name a few other stupid things that they had done. Where was the community outrage then? Madam Zia should have been called Didi Zia or Chief Minister Khaleda.

I just have had enough with the lies. The philosophy, it seems, that if you don't have facts to support your argument, just pull them out of your rear end!!

Enough already.

He said currency notes and coins of all denominations would have the portrait of Sheikh Mujib.
The minister said this in reply to a question of Awami League lawmaker Begum Meher Afroz for a Gazipur constituency.

[ALOCHONA] Cross-currents in BNP as it battles polls blues

Cross-currents in BNP as it battles polls blues
Courtesy New Age 2/7/09

Shahidul Islam Chowdhury

As many as six ‘trends’ are now active in the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party which is struggling to recover from the trauma of its humiliating defeat in the last general elections, according to party insiders.
Most of the leaders are in two minds about how to revamp the party – to go for democratisation with a bottom-up approach and devolution of authority or to continue to pursue the top-down ‘authoritarian’ system.
Leaders of almost all streams want party chairperson Khaleda Zia to spearhead the democratisation process but at the same time are trying to isolate the rivals.
The moderates, who are eager for democratisation of the organisation, are trying to convince all other streams it would not be prudent to draw battle lines at this juncture.
Grassroots-level leaders and activists, though convinced that there is no alternative to Khaleda’s leadership, are also in the race to have their berths in, as well as control of respective district and upazila level committees.
Most of the party lawmakers are apparently frustrated as the highest policy-making standing committee did not allow them to join the budget session of the parliament thereby depriving them of discharging their constitutional responsibilities.
A New Age investigation has found all the six trends active overtly or covertly, although the activities of four streams – ‘conformists’, the group backing the party secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, the section supporting senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman, and opportunists – are more prominent.
A section of vice-chairmen and joint secretaries general – mostly conformists – are vying for the post of secretary general or a berth in the standing committee and, on the other hand, their rivals – former reformists –are desperate to consolidate and mobilise support for themselves within the party.
Followers of the Khandaker Delwar want him to continue to hold the post of the party secretary general after the national council session.
Some top part leaders, who back Tarique Rahman are in contact with him over telephone, are trying to persuade him to take the charge of the secretary general at the earliest. Tarique left the country on September 11, 2008, and is undergoing treatment in London.
Nazmul Huda, a vice chairman of the party, recently fired a broadside at the secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain questioning his ability to lead the party. ‘He [Delwar] is unable to lead and reorganise the party.’
Huda, who had been the youngest member in the standing committee led by late Ziaur Rahman, founder of the party, did not hide his eagerness for the post of the secretary general.
Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, a standing committee member who wields enormous influence in the party, told reporters that he would be happy if the secretary general was chosen through election in the council session. He, however, said that it was his personal opinion.
Opportunists are trying to ‘[mis]guide’ the top leaders, including Khaleda Zia, Khandaker Delwar Hossain and Tarique Rahman, for their personal gains, said party insiders.
Khandaker Delwar, said, ‘The BNP is a big party. It is quite natural that we have differences of opinion. But almost all leaders want the party to get stronger under the leadership of Khaleda Zia.’
The BNP on June 9 announced convening committees for its 71, out of 75 district units, dissolving the incumbent bodies and asking them to elect fully-fledged panels through council sessions by November 15.
The convening committees for the Dhaka city, Dhaka district, Manikganj and Sunamganj are yet to be announced.
‘This is for the first time that the party has failed to form a committee in the district of the secretary general…Khandaler Delwar is a resident of Manikganj…,’ a party leader said.
The convening committee and the leaders in Feni, the home district of Khaleda Zia, are also clearly divided, he lamented.
The party started reorganising its district convening committees to tackle internal conflicts in many districts where rival groups clashed and staged demonstrations against each other.
The party drew criticism from within and outside for not allowing its lawmakers to participate in the parliament’s budget discussion. ‘We could not join the session…Most of the policymakers turned down our request to join the house,’ a BNP MP said. ‘It is frustrating.’ A new lawmaker of the party shared the sentiment.

[mukto-mona] FW: [Siraat-al-Mustaqeem] Lets join hands and Build Dams...lets save the world from destruction

From our Paki brothers ... ...

[I am dead against building dams.  Wind and solar energy supplies do not disturb nature.  But impounding a river causes huge environmental damage that is unretrievable.

Notice, how the Paki brother bashes the 'gorra' but is keen to imitate their past actions which devastated their landscape and nature!   -- farida majid]

Subject: [Siraat-al-Mustaqeem] Lets join hands and Build Dams...lets save the world from destruction

Only the agents of gorras who have nothing else but to undermine the country's development or are dumb and ignorant can write something against dams...

Building dams is the world's best means of water storage, electricity generation, and flood prevention. Without Dams the world would be devasted by floods and its enviornment would be destroyed in totality with the alternative use of fuels to generate our growing needs of electricity.

The intelligent countries have invested most heavily in dams which have been around ever since we have seen the civilization. Now we see the environment destroyed by the use of global warming, the cause of which is the fuels we burn to feed our bulbs at homes. This is a crime against humanity.

The best and most economical source of power in Pakistan has been DAMS. The one of few intelligent decisions done by our previous governments. The need is to fill the country with dams and not let go waste a single drop of water but through utilizing it. That is the BEST SOLUTION FOR OUR ENERGY AND WATER CRISES. It is dumb to let the heavy rains destroy our farms and lands and then we sit and cry for drought when there is no water. Only the enemies or idiots can propagate such theories, to stand against dams.

Few examples of NEW DAMS in the world.

Over the past 50 years (since 1959), California has added a whopping 21 million acre-feet of storage, including some of the largest reservoirs in the State. Over the past 40 years (since 1969), we have added over 8,600,000 AF of storage (including massive New Melones Dam). Since 1979, we have added over 1,600,000 acre-feet (including New Spicer Meadows Dam and Warm Springs Dam). Since 1989, we have added over a million acre-feet (including Diamond Valley and Los Vaqueros). And these numbers don't include new groundwater storage systems or the vast "reservoirs" of saved water we've created through conservation and efficiency programs.

December 28, 2007 — Home to almost half of the world's 45,000 biggest dams, China has embarked on a push to export its hydropower know-how to developing countries ...
Already home to nearly half of the world's dams, China intends to more than double its hydropower generating capacity by 2020 by adding a series of new dams across the country. More significantly, in recent years, Beijing has been ambitious about financing and building dams, both close to home in Asia as well as in half-a-dozen African countries.
http://www.sudantribune.com/spip.php?article25353

Comments on environment: (and no one compares what will happen if we stop new dams and add coal burning furnaces to generate electricity! It would be the end of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
If we now examined those almost two thousand major federal dams, we would be able to find many ways to improve their performance. In many cases, troublesome environmental impacts caused by dams and water projects can be mitigated simply by changing operations--changing the timing of water releases or using modern hydrological analysis to optimize benefits. In some cases modernizing facilities--installing efficient turbines and generators, eliminating wasted water and power, or installing fish ladders--can increase benefits. In a small number of cases those impacts are simply the price paid for the benefits and we either accept the cost or remove the dam.

Some facts: Dams are the most reliable and historically proven method to store water for differen purposes:

Remains of water storage dams found in Jordan, Egypt and other parts of the Middle East date back to at least 3000 BC.
Since average construction periods generally range from 5 to 10 years, this indicates a worldwide annual average of some 160 to 320 new large dams per year.
Half the world's large dams were built exclusively or primarily for irrigation, and an estimated 30 to 40% of the 271 million hectares of irrigated lands worldwide rely on dams. Dams are estimated to contribute to 12-16% of world food production.
Hydropower currently provides 19% of the world's total electricity supply, and is used in over 150 countries with 24 of these countries depending on it for 90% of their supply.

Only the enemies of the people stand against the dams. The problems cited include displacement of people, and misinformation about ecological damage. Every one knows that nothing is free in the world and one needs to invest and pay. The displaced people need to be adequately compensated. But it does not mean one starts destroying the whole world by buring carbon to produce energy and let the world flood and let the farmers die without water, or through floods. The misinformation spread against dams is used against Pakistan specifically. But it exposes them and their mindset.

Lets build dams and save the world from destruction and support our farm lands and our country. develop the energy sources that are economical and environmentally the best. hydroenergy is the cleanest source of producing energy, saving the country from floods, and storing water when in excess and providing it to the farms and nation when there is lack of it. Lets join hands and trample the hurdles that have been errected by ignorant, the agents, the feudals, some politicians and by the enemies.

Saleh

[ALOCHONA] Principal Abul Kashem & Tamaddun Majlish_Real Pioneer of Language Movement

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Greetings from the heart of Bangladesh.

(This post is as the reply of Mr. Syed Aslam)

I am not only denying but also strongly believe that Mr. Syed Aslam's claim (Shaheed Dhirendra Nath Datta - Real Pioneer of Bangla as the state language of Pakistan) is the distortion of a proven & True History of "Language Movement". We may treat Principal Abul Kashem & Tamaddun Majlish are the "real pioneer of Language movement".

Please read carefully the following link,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamaddun_Majlish

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abul_Kashem

To understand about the state language of India & Pakistan, we should study carefully the history of Sub-continent specially the history of religion & Language. Only and only then, we may able to understand why a "strange Pakistan" was created? Why Hindi was selected as the state language of India & Pakistani leaders proposed for Urdu as the state language of Pakistan?

May be Shahid Dhirendranath Datta was the first formal articulation of the demand for Bengali to be made one of the state languages of Pakistan in Pakistan Constituent Assembly on 23rd February, 1948. We salute for his contribution but that doesn't prove he was the "Real Pioneer of Language Movement".

Thanks & Regards,

Mosharraf Khokon

[ALOCHONA] Windies wilt against spin again

The makeshift West Indies
side struggled against Bangladesh's spin again on a rain-affected
third day of the second Test as the Caribbean side closed on 192 for
eight in their second innings.

Shakib Al Hasan took four for 62 after the West Indies, who had a
five-run first-innings lead, struggled to make a score that would give
them a chance of levelling the series.

Only Travis Dowlin, who made 49 to follow his 95 in the first innings
and Dave Bernard who completed his third half century in the series,
showed any competence against tight slow bowling from Bangladesh.

Bangladesh deployed an attacking field with close catchers around the
bat throughout the day, illustrating their confidence that, as in the
first Test and the first innings in Grenada, West Indies would wilt
against the constant probing.

They were encouraged left-handed opener Omar Phillips holed out to
square-leg off Shakib and Ryan Hinds inexplicably tried to sweep a
ball going down leg side and gloved to Mahmudullah Riyad at leg slip.

Re: [mukto-mona] Re: Prosecution of Asghar

The perception of truth changes with time.  Anyone believing in the truthfulness of any religious literature really lives in a fool's paradise.  Since the time of Pythagoras, society had three strata, viz., the divine, the pythagoreans and the commoners.  The divine delivers, the pythagoreans interpret, and the commoners learn.  What the divine delivers may change with scientific revelations.  The primitive telescope, as it seems, could help men to see more than Gabriel could.  Not even Indra, the king of Gods with a thousand eyes, is a match for it.  The brains of the believers is really buried in the heap of horsedung.  May their God/Allah/Iswar take care of them.

Real victory will be on the day of final judgment in the world hereafter.
On that day the judge will be the creator of the universe.
Winning a verdict by human judge at the court room of Washington DC
is not the benchmark of success.
Let us all check ourselves whether we are prepared for that final judgment.

If we seriously realize that, I am sure, everybody will stop this silly fighting.

Thanks Mr. Saif Devdas for your strong support. We need many more brave people like you to face the hateful Muslims headon.

This man claims to be a human right defender, yet he very strongly supports the teachings of the Quran, which is, actually, a manual of terror and the worst violator of human rights. It commands its followers to kill the Polytheists, Jews and the Christians, if they do not convert to Islam, as it is the only approved religion of Allah, or if they refuse to pay protection tax to the Muslim hyenas.

I wonder where is the United Nations' Human Rights Watchdogs? Don't they know what Islam stands for, and how its followers are determined to exterminate the non-Muslims from the face of the earth? Or have they closed their eyes and ears and letting the Muslims do what they want to do?

It is the lack of initiative on the part of the Human Rights Watchers that has been encouraging people like the Harvard educated one to threaten the true defenders of human rights. But I am not afraid; rather, I will be happy to die while still defending the rights of all the human beings that will enable them to live their lives according to their own choices. No amount of threats will be able to force me out of my mission.

 Mohammad Asghar

[ALOCHONA] Resignation drama climaxes:Self-respect more important than ministerial job: Sohel Taj

Resignation drama climaxes:Self-respect more important than ministerial job: Sohel Taj

Sohel Taj, now in the USA to settle score with his estranged wife claimed he was no longer a minister as he personally submitted his resignation letter to the Prime Minister on May 31, as he is opposed to "embarrass anyone".

Sohel Taj is now staying with his wife, two daughters and mother-in-law in Maryland near Washington. Meanwhile, Home Minister advocate Sahara Khatun, is in Singapore for treatment of her injured waist.

Talking to News World news agency in Washington, the state minister said he submitted his resignation letter as per article 58 (a) of the constitution.

He said, "I've personally submitted the resignation letter to the Prime Minister," adding that as per convention the resignation comes into effect automatically when a minister sends his resignation letter to the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister brings it to the notice of the President.

"After May 31 I am no longer minister. I have the memo no of the receipt of my resignation letter," he said, apparently to clear the mists over his lengthy absence from the country.

Having submitted the resignation letter to the Prime Minister, he left for America he is reported to have told the foreign news agency.

He made it clear that it would be violation of the constitution to address him as minister as "As per constitution my resignation has been accepted."

Responding to a question, he reportedly told the news agency that he would return home conveniently. Since quitting the ministerial job, he has no urgency to return to Bangladesh. It needs taking oath afresh to get back the job, but there is no opportunity for that, he is learnt to have told the media.

Taj made it clear that he has not received salary and allowances from June 1. Despite the fact, he said, misleading news is being published against him.

Giving reasons for the resignation, Taj said it would not be decent to make comment about that.

He said he was committed to the country, the nation and the Prime Minister.

"Nevertheless, principle, ideal and self-respect are the prime assets of a person," Taj, son of the country's slain first prime minister, Tajuddin Ahmed reportedly said. "I am not the person to continue with my ministerial job by sacrificing all this. It's not possible for me to give up my self-respect."

Sohel Taj said it is most important to him to uphold his family tradition and prestige of being a public representative than holding the post of minister.

In reply to a question if he experienced any difficulty as a minister of the Awami League government which is about six months old, Taj said everyone has to realize the development of the country and a need for change, but he does not want to put anyone in an embarrassing situation. He hoped all would work for the betterment of the country according to their pledges.

The dissident junior minister and lawmaker from Gazipur said he took oath as minister with a cherished dream and commitment to 'change' and he cannot express that feeling. He hoped the government would fulfil its commitment made to the nation for a 'change," he is reported to have told the agency.

Sohel Taj said May 31, the day he stepped down, was obviously a day of sadness for him. "I wanted to give something to the nation, but it was not possible."After the resignation, he said he did not go to the secretariat to perform the minister's job but went to the office to complete some official formalities, the agency said.

In reply to a question of the reasons behind the resignation, he said, it was not the right time to disclose it.

Sohel hoped the Awami League-led alliance government would be able to fulfil the pledges it made before the election.

Amar Desh report, 13 July 2009, last page.

Leftist teachers, intellectuals and writers in meetings held at the Dhaka University asked Hasina whether she wanted to remain a Prime Minister or wanted to become a Chief Minister. They called upon the Prime Minister to refrain from being collaborators  of India and the US and, in the interest of the country, to oppose the Tipaimukh Dam and the selling of oil-gas to foreigners. They called for the expulsion of Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty.

They alleged against the Prothom Alo of info-terrorism and fascism and demanded release of Ashish Koraia and Prince Mahmood of the Lamp Post cultural organisation from police custody. They criticised Ramesh Chandra Sen of not understanding the magnitude of the adverse effects of the Tipaimukh Dam project.
