[ALOCHONA] Chatra League violence

Teachers feel insecure as BCL activists become violent

eachers of some public universities and university colleges have said that they feel insecure as some leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League's associate body of students, have become 'violent' in recent times. They have said that they feared attacks from Chhatra League activists during the forthcoming session for admission to the educational institutions.

Authorities of the universities and the University Grants Commission have become 'concerned' about an increased number of attacks by Chhatra League activists on teachers, the UGC chair, AK Azad Chowdhury, told New Age on Tuesday. 'The recent violence is alarming. Teachers across the country now feel insecure,' said Ferdous Hossain, who is a former secretary to the Dhaka University Teachers' Association.

Chhatra League leaders generally take money from admission seekers and ask teachers to have them admitted to the institutions, teachers alleged. And the leaders of the organisation attack the teachers if they do not agree to have the students admitted, they added.

It has become a regular phenomenon and it is likely to surface once again as the admission process in public universities and colleges is about to begin, they said.Teachers of university colleges are most vulnerable to attacks at admission time, they added.

At least 20 teachers of the Bangladesh Agricultural University became injured when Chhatra League activists attacked them on August 8.

The university proctor, Abu Hadi Noor Ali, came to be attacked after he had handed over to the police two students held on suspicion of being involved in mugging in the botanical garden of the university.Teachers then had not taken classes and given examinations for a couple of days demanding punishment of the attackers.

The University of Chittagong proctor, Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, and three assistant proctors Mohammad Monjur Morshed,  Mohammad Moinul Islam and Shipak Krishna Devnath submitted to authorities their resignation on August 1, over 'misconduct' by groups of Chhatra League activists. They, however, withdrew their resignation after a meeting with the authorities.

Chhatra League activists on February 18 ransacked the office of Hossain Kabir, the provost of the Alaol Hall in Chittagong Univeristy and damaged valuables over the distribution of seats in the hall.

On August 13, Chhatra League activists foiled the examinations for teacher's recruitment at the SD Degree College at Kotchandpur in Jhenaidah. The activists beat up the college principal, Amal Kumar Ghosh.

On May 22, a teacher of chemistry at the Government Bangla College at Mirpur in Dhaka was attacked by Chhatra League activists during the HSC admission test.

Rubel Hawlader, organisational secretary of the college unit Chhatra League, pushed the teacher down the staircase from the first floor in a college building as he did not agree to have students of their choice admitted.

Chhatra League activists at the time also threatened several teachers of Dhaka College. 'They told me that no one can save me if I do not have their candidates admitted,' one of the teachers said.

The National University's pro-vice-chancellor Tofail Ahmad Chowdhury, however, defended the Chhatra League activists.Students are not always responsible for such incidents, he said. 'There is no reason to think that teachers are always innocent.' He, however, said that students, whoever they are, should not have taken the law into their own hands.

When asked why they have not taken action, he said, 'It is not possible for us to rush in where students confine teachers. We take disciplinary action against students when we are informed of such matters.'

Former DUTA general secretary Ferdous said that incidents of violence against teachers was increasing as the attackers were not punished. 'If we cannot stop such violence against teachers, academic activities in universities will be affected,' he added.

The DUTA president, Anwar Hossain, said that the teachers should also have a role to play in not being attacked.

'I strongly condemn attacks on teachers in the Bangladesh Agricultural University. But I saw in a photograph published in newspapers that a teacher was holding a student hanging from the belt. A teacher cannot do this,' he said.

He said that investigators also need to find out whether there was any provocation from the teachers in the BAU incident. He, however, said that authorities needed to ensure punishment of attackers. The UGC chair Azad said that any students found involved in such violence would be expelled from the university.

[mukto-mona] Indonesia Bans Labor to Saudi Arabia

After Saudi Arabia beheaded a 54-year old Indonesian grandmother in June for stabbing her Saudi employer to death, Indonesia declared a moratorium on the migration of its nationals for domestic employment in the desert kingdom, effective August 1.

Although the two countries were to adopt a bilateral agreement for protection of Indonesian domestic workers in Saudi Arabia this year, no such document has been signed.

Ruyati Binti Satubi, a household worker from West Java, was executed for murder after she confessed slaying the man who had contracted her. The Indonesian migrant, who has three children, said she killed her employer because she was denied permission to return to her native land.

Media in Indonesia and elsewhere indicated that Ruyati Binti Satubi had been subjected to other forms of abuse while working in the Saudi home, located in Mecca, Islam's holiest city. Neither the Indonesian authorities nor her family was informed of the death sentence until after it was carried out, an action for which the Saudi regime apologized to Jakarta. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wrote in protest to Saudi King Abdullah after the execution, and the Indonesian authorities followed up with the moratorium on exporting laborers, enforced visibly at airports and through contracting agencies.

The beheading of Ruyati Binti Satubi was only the most recent in a series of shocking cases involving Indonesian domestic workers in Saudi Arabia. In April, Saudi authorities overturned a three-year prison sentence against a 53-year old Saudi woman in Medina, for "torture" in the beating and burning of her 23-year old maid, Sumiati Binti Salan Mustapa.

That incident, like the execution of Ruyati Binti Satubi, caused widespread protest in Indonesia, as well as increased reluctance to undergo the risks of working in Saudi Arabia, which Indonesian workers described as "horror stories." Indonesian media report that the flow of migrant workers to the kingdom had already decreased by 30 percent in the first quarter of this year. With imposition of the August labour embargo, Indonesia was expected to lose $350 million worth of income.

Some 20 Indonesians, mainly women, are said to face capital punishment in Saudi Arabia. Indonesian officials say that 370,000 of their citizens went to work in Saudi Arabia in 2010. Of these, more than 90 percent are employed in the so-called "informal sector," that is, paid in cash, without record-keeping or government oversight. British media state, however, that 1.5 million Indonesians are working in Saudi Arabia. Complaints of physical abuse and murder of Indonesian domestic servants by Saudis have produced hundreds of cases, but like other emigrant labourers in Saudi Arabia, Indonesians have no rights.

Indonesia had imposed new regulations on the employment of emigrants to Saudi Arabia, under which the Saudi employee would be required to earn at least $2,800 per month, and the number of family members and layout of the residence would be registered.

Because of the rigid oversight of relations between family and non-family members as dictated by Wahhabism, the Saudi state form of Islam, the kingdom has one of the highest proportions of immigrant laborers in the world; they currently account for 5.5 million out of 26 million people, or 20 percent. Foreign observers describe the Saudi demand for foreign housemaids, drivers, and similar employees as inexhaustible. Saudi subjects are discouraged from such work.

Millions of Pakistanis, Indonesians, Filipinos, South Koreans, and Sri Lankans receive low wages, when not subjected to outright slavery and extreme abuse, while toiling for Saudi masters. Domestic and other low-skill workers live apart from the Anglo-American, other European, and similar foreign technicians who serve the petrochemical and other advanced industries, and who reside in segregated, protected communities that seek to reproduce the conditions in their advanced countries of origin.

While no religion other than Islam is permitted public observance in Saudi Arabia, foreign petrochemical and defence professionals are allowed to hold Christian and other services within their homes. But Christians, Buddhists, and Hindus from the Philippines, South Korea, and Sri Lanka are prohibited from practicing their faiths; and even Pakistani and Indonesian Muslims who work in Saudi Arabia face religious discrimination. For example, preaching in South and Southeast Asian languages in mosques and similar activities are forbidden, as are Sufi observances, popular in Pakistan and Indonesia alike. No other Muslim state imposes such restrictions. Nevertheless, many Muslims are lured to work in the kingdom because of its religious prestige.

With 86 percent of its population of 245 million counted as Muslims, Indonesia has the largest Islamic population of any country in the world. Indonesian domestic workers earn about $200 per month in Saudi Arabia, a wage superior to those an Indonesian migrant villager with a primary-school education would be paid in the east Asian industrialized nations, such as Japan or Taiwan.

At the beginning of August, the official Saudi Arab News announced that two Indonesian women sentenced to beheading would be reprieved and repatriated. Identified only by their first names, Emi was convicted of killing her employer's child, and Nesi of using "black magic" against her employer. Executions for alleged "witchcraft" are common in the kingdom, which has experienced recurrent panic over "sorcery."

[ALOCHONA] 50 MPs tell Star about their ordeal in dealing with public fury over battered roads

AL lawmakers embarrassed

50 MPs tell Star about their ordeal in dealing with public fury over
battered roads

Many lawmakers of the ruling Awami League-led alliance are now facing
public rage and humiliation due to the terrible condition of roads and
highways in their areas.

Talking to The Daily Star, they narrated how people are annoyed with
them for their failure in the last two and a half years in fulfilling
the pledge of keeping the road network in shape.

People are already aggrieved by the price hike of commodities and
desperately trying to cope with the situation on their own. Now, the
poor condition of roads appears to be a huge threat on their
livelihood due to the severely disrupted communication network,
observed a good number of members of parliament (MP).

"The condition of the 20 kilometres of road in my constituency is so
bad that I avoid using the roads fearing public wrath," said Anwarul
Ashraf Khan, Awami League (AL) MP of Narshingdi-2.

Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, AL MP of Dinajpur, said, "We raised the issue
of poor road condition in parliament several times, but the
communications minister did not pay heed to us. Now, the country's 14
crore people are disgusted and have raised their voices."

"If the situation is not improved any time soon, people will hold the
entire government responsible for the failure," said Chowdhury, also
an organising secretary of AL.

Zafar Iqbal Siddiqui, Jatiya Party MP of Nilphamari-1, said the
condition of the highway between Domar upazila and Nilphamari district
headquarters is so bad that people do not shift any serious patient to
district hospital using the road.

"Every day people ask me what I am doing about the battered road
condition. Helpless, I stay put at home when I visit my constituency;
just to avoid people's criticism," Siddiqui said.

In the last three days, The Daily Star randomly talked to 50 MPs of 44
districts over the phone seeking to know people's reaction in their
respective districts and constituencies.

The districts are: Gazipur, Tangail, Mymensingh, Netrakona,
Kishoreganj, Jamalpur, Manikganj, Narayanganj, Narsingdi, Rajshahi,
Pabna, Sirajganj, Naogaon, Natore, Bogra, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur,
Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Panchagarh,
Chuadanga, Jhenidah, Kushtia, Jessore, Magura, Narail, Bagerhat,
Khulna, Satkhira, Barguna, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Sylhet,
Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Noakhali, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and
Bandarban.

Almost all of the MPs that The Daily Star contacted expressed severe
resentment over the poor performance of Communications Minister Syed
Abul Hossain and his ministry.

They said with the rise in commodity prices and shortage of power, the
battered condition of roads and highways will tarnish the image of the
government.

The inter-district bus operators have already suspended their service
indefinitely on Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways protesting
severely battered road condition.

The suspension came ahead of the Eid-ul Fitr triggering sufferings to
people of at least 12 districts who use the routes for communications
with the capital.

The Hatikumrul-Bonpara route of Dhaka-Rajshahi highway and
Barisal-Bhola-Laxmipur route is teetering on the brink of a collapse.

MPs belonging to AL and its alliance components Jatiya Party, Jatiya
Samajtantrik Dal and Workers Party said people are continuously
pressing them for an explanation for the failure in repairing roads.

"I feel helpless. I don't know where to go and who to ask to repair
the dilapidated roads in my constituency," said Anwarul Ashraf Khan,
AL MP of Narshingdi-2.

In a frustrated tone he narrated his hectic effort in the last one
year to draw attention of the communications minister to carry out the
repair works.

The parliamentary proceedings of last two years are the major evidence
of how MPs have pursued the communications minister for urgent
repairing of roads in their districts and constituencies to ensure
people's safe movement.

Many MPs personally met the communications minister at his office and
issued numerous demand orders (DO) to convince him to do the repairing
works.

"The communications minister assured me of repairing the damaged roads
every time I met him, but nothing has been done so far," said AKM
Mozammel Haque, AL MP of Gazipur-1 constituency.

"The sufferings of people are now taking to a new height due to the
sorry state of roads. They are holding me accountable for it. Party's
local leaders are also embarrassed with the declining popularity of
the government," Mozammel said.

Expressing deep frustration over the road condition in his Kurigram
district, State Minister for Land AKM Mostafizur Rahman said, "As MPs
and ministers, we don't have any confidence in his [communications
minister's] assurances. I believe, the people also feel the same way."

The state minister believes that the communications minister does not
have any concern about repairing and maintaining the roads and
highways.

Interestingly, the comparatively worse condition of roads in the
constituency of Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury in Dinajpur extends some
consolation to Jatiya Party MP Hafiz Uddin Ahmed of Thakurgaon-3.

Hafiz Uddin said those of his constituency who travelled through
Dinajpur highway do not complain much about the dilapidated roads of
his Thakurgaon-3 constituency. The condition of roads in his area is
also poor and his hectic efforts too failed to convince the
communications ministry to repair them.

Pirojpur-2 AL MP Shah Alam said the road network in his district is
not good, but he somehow managed the communications minister early in
2009 and had some repairing works done. "It now gives me a sigh of
relief," he said.

But other MPs are not so lucky like Hafiz Uddin and Shah Alam as they
have already felt the heat of public anger due to the battered road
condition.

AL MP Abdul Hyee of Jhenaidah-1 said big potholes in the roads of his
constituency have now turned into such small ponds that on rainy days
children bathe there. The local people are furious about this.

"People bash me behind my back and on my face for the failure to meet
the pledge of repairing roads. So I decided to stay home. I even
cancelled the plan to meet people of my constituency on the occasion
of the National Mourning Day on August 15 just to avoid their anger,"
Hyee said.

Citing the battered condition of highway in his constituency, AL MP
Nani Gopal Mandal of Khulna-1 said people of his area are so aggrieved
that he became confused whether to visit his constituency during the
National Mourning Day.

"But I anyhow came to my constituency to console the people. I don't
know how long they would be able to tolerate all the tall talks," he
said.

BH Haroon, AL MP of Jhalkathi-1, said the road network of his district
is way too bad and the condition of the 30-kilometre highway through
his constituency is awful. "The road is like a death trap. People are
very angry and frustrated with the situation. I will have to stop
visiting my constituency if the situation does not improve soon," he
said.

AKM Mayeedul Islam, Jatiya Party MP of Kurigram-3, said, "I am so
annoyed by the pouring complaints of people about the road conditions
that I am bound to seek his [communication minister's] resignation."

The prime minister must remove the communications minister immediately
for his failure, Mayeedul observed.

Matiur Rahman, AL MP of Tangail, said he could not visit his
constituency on the National Mourning Day due to disruption of road
network. "People of my constituency are in a sense detached from the
capital due to the road condition."

"I pursued the communications minister many times in parliament and in
his office. Each time he assured me of repair work but did nothing
thus far," he added.

Wishing anonymity, another AL MP of Mymensingh district said the
condition of Dhaka-Mymensingh road was not so bad even during the
Liberation War in 1971, except for some bridges and culverts destroyed
in the warfare.

Mujib Ul Haque, Jatiya Party MP of Kishoreganj, said he demanded
repairing of the Tongi-Gazipur road several times as most people of
his district use the road as a communication network with the capital.

Blasting the communications minister Haque said, "He [communication
minister] speaks of many dreams which do not have links with the
reality."

AL Presidium Member Obaidul Quader of Noakhali-5 said people are
annoyed and they want to see some action. He said condition of the
entire road network of Noakhali district is more or less bad.

"The communications minister should not blame other ministry for his
failure. People want the government to solve the existing problems
discarding ambitious plans," Quader maintained.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal MP Shah Jikrul Ahmed of Brahmanbaria-5 said
the AL-led grand alliance may face a disaster if it fails to resolve
the crisis soon.

"People of my constituency are constantly seeking to know when the
roads and highways will be repaired. I keep assuring them. But I think
they would soon lose confidence in me as they see no action," Jikrul
said, citing the pathetic condition of roads.

"I am tired of answering people's queries about the delay in repairing
the roads," said AL MP Ziaul Haque Mridha of Brahmanbaria-2.

Jatiya Party Presidium Member and MP Anisul Islam Mahmud of
Chittagong-4 said grassroots-level leaders and people are frustrated
at the poor road condition. According to them, getting re-elected in
the next parliamentary polls will be a far cry for the grand alliance
if it fails to mitigate people's suffering immediately.

Some MPs condemned the lack of accountability of ministers for their
poor performance.

Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, ruling AL MP of Dinajpur and chief of the
parliamentary standing committee on the foreign ministry, said the
present situation suggests there is no accountability of the ministers
and they are not punished for their incompetence.

Echoing Mahmood, AL MP Shahiduzzaman Sarker of Naogaon-2 said
ministers holding important portfolios do not care much about other
lawmakers' voices. "The current situation suggests the ministers are
not accountable to the parliament either," he said.

[ALOCHONA] Indians Help Bangladeshis, And Themselves

"Sheik Hassina is the daughter of Sheik Mujibur who was handed the reins of power by Indira Gandhi" ... so, she should be punished for his this Sin?

That's right. Indira Gandhi had committed a grave Sin against Fort of Islam, Islamic Republic of Pakistan and whoever benefited from it should be punished. We must jail Hasina and handover BD back to our Punjabi Brothers of Pakistan, right?

India is benefiting from separation of East Pakistan from our loving Pakistan so, we must join Pakistan back, right?

Only Pakistan should be permitted to use the Corridor to ship Arms and Ammunition to Rebels in Assam and India should not be allowed to import export from Assam through BD doesn't matter how much India pays us for that, right?

Fasting : How Government's action can help Citizen?

BADRUL ISLAM

The Month of Ramadan has commenced and Muslims all over the world will practice" Fasting" which is ordained by Allah(swt) ; "O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you, as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may learn Self-restraint" (Holy Quran: Sura 2 verse 183).
Duties of Citizen(Muslim): The duties of the Muslims during this month are clearly indicated in the Holy Quran: Sura 2 verses 184 through 187 and after making the Niyaat(daily) to fast it is incumbent on all Muslims to follow those properly to fulfill one's obligations for which an individual is rewarded by 70 times. The obligations refer to Self-restraint, Prayers (Regular, Tarabee , Tahajjud, and Nafl), Reading the Holy Quran, Zakat and Fitra to the poor.
The Prophet (swas) mentioned that Allah (swt) keeps the doors of Paradise open, gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained. Allah (swt) blesses those Muslims who observe fast and rewards them by forgiving past sins, protecting against hell-fire, and answering individual's prayers.
The special night during this month of Ramadan is "Lailatul Qadr"(Night of Revelation); reward for prayers offered this night are 1000 times more than for other nights.
Since the Holy Quran was revealed during this month the Muslims are encouraged to read it preferably with its translation so that they benefit from its contents and understand that it is a "Complete Code of Life".
Governments Responsibility: The Government in Gaza announced that it would distribute a million dollars to Gaza's poor (16000 poverty-stricken families) ahead of Ramadan to enable them to buy food.
In Abu Dhabi ,tents located ,next to several mosques, are prominent symbol of the Ramadan spirit of giving and sharing, with people from all walks of life, regardless of their nationality, social status or financial background, sitting shoulder to shoulder to break their fast. Free Iftar meals are provided on a daily basis. In addition Red Crescent Society and Zayed Al Nayan Foundation distribute thousands of boxes of meals, dates, water at various locations in the city before Iftar time. The foundation also gives to beneficiary families coupons of all essential Ramadan items needed for the families for the entire month.
In UAE, the Ministry of Economy, has taken the initiative, in collaboration with farms and major meat suppliers that UAE consumers will pay less for meat. Additionally, the Ministry confirmed that more than 700 consumer items have been included in the list of products that will not see any price hike this year.
In Turkey the Government is planning to set up "Mobile Mosques" at distant areas thus making it convenient for Citizen to pray.
The above examples are cited for our Leaders to understand how Governments can take responsibility and initiative to ease the hardship of its Citizen, particularly the most poor of the society.
In this particular month our Citizen remains dependent on their Elected Representatives for receiving smooth services, (Water, Electricity, and Gas, tax for which are duly paid) and for receiving food items from Markets at most reasonable prices.
0ur Prime Minister has called upon businessmen not to hike the price of essentials during the Month of Ramadan. Is that enough? Ground realities are very different .As reported in various Newspapers the prices of everything is going haywire. Whole-sellers and retailers are charging according to their whims. In defense for their action, they have picked up the cue from our Political parties, of blaming each other and also refers to world inflation and rising prices."Most City shops stop selling sugar, oil and TCB outlet also stops sales abruptly" is the headline of New Age dated July22, 2011. Who is responsible for this?
The Citizen feels that the Minister of Commerce, was wrong in his policy, to side track TCB, and encourage private businessmen to become the market suppliers and today from amongst them they have become the "Hydra" or the "Syndicate" to control market and they keep manipulating for profit.
Citizens are hopefully that the Prime Minister would also instruct the respective Chairman of the autonomous bodies and municipalities that essential services provided to Citizens through their respective Institutions must be ensured for Citizen and that any complaint of corrupt practices would be firmly dealt with.
"Power-cut alert for Ramadan ;Ministry calls for austerity" is another headline of Daily Star dated July 14, 2011. The report states that Power consumers are likely to face 500-700 megawatt load shedding during Ramadan although around 1000 MW power was added to national grid in the last one year. PDB Chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir said about 300MW of electricity will be added to national grid this month. Citizens have been asked to observe austerity measures, devotees to refrain from using air-conditioners at Mosques, Business 0ffices, Industrial complexes and Shopkeepers too have been asked not to use air-conditioner and to close shops by 8PM. But nothing has been mentioned about the observing of austerity by MPs at Parliament Bhavan and their Hostel/residences, and Hotels/Restaurants; hospitals are exempted from this order. The Prime Minister's energy adviser, Dr. Chowdhury , at a meeting in the Ministry said, "if they abstain from keeping on their air-conditioners, it would provide a great scope to get electricity at mosques in rural areas". How many Mosques exist in the rural area of Bangladesh?

It is very hearting to learn from Newspapers today (July 27,2011) that while addressing the inaugural session of a three –day DC conference ,the Prime Minister as directed them to step up vigilance to contain price hike of commodities and maintain law and order. She warned that vested quarters may become active during Ramadan to make extra profit by hoarding essentials or other means.
This statement made by the Prime Minister is absolutely correct and, it should be noted by the Authorities, that this same description can very well be attributed to the different Autonomous bodies that are responsible for providing the essential services (Electricity, Water and Gas) to Citizen. The DCs should definitely include these bodies (DESCO, WASA and TITAS GAS) in their vigilance program. The Chairman and the staff of these Autonomous bodies are duty bound to ensue smooth service to Citizen.
It is expected that "Mobile courts" will keep vigilance though out the month of Ramadan and it would be highly appreciated by the Citizen if the Mobile numbers of these "Mobile courts", for each areas, are published in all the newspapers and announced by special bulletin through TV Channels everyday.

The spirit and values of Ramadan ensure that preparations for Fasting are not an individual effort but a collective one; an entire nation is involved as individuals, families, institutions and government. Through-out this month Citizen will be busy with Self-refinement and Self-restraint.

Ramadan Mubarak! May Allah (swt), the Majestic and Bounteous, grants all of us, peace and strength throughout the month, forgive all our sins, offer protection from hell-fire and accept our good deeds, Zakat and Fitra (Ameen)

RE: [ALOCHONA] Digital Bangladesh ?

The dumbest of the lot!  How did all this talk of "clarifying" curriculum enter his clouded eyesight? It is completely 'off the topic' of my post.  He sees <<millions of people in the 'muddy paddy field '  and millions who live
"under beautiful skies, whether full of rain-clouds or bright blue with cotton flakes of clouds, of these monsoon months of Bengal ">>
as nothing but fools --- fooled by some sweet talks for years!

I can thank Allah subhanu t'ala for exporting such SMART people who no longer live under these beautiful monsoon skies of Bangladesh!  Good riddance of rubbish! A few more to go ... like that worthless Transport Minister who never paid any attention to repairing roads and highways!

congratulations.....farida majid,   the would-be finance advisor to PM putul, for ur wonderful comments.

You have not clarified yet, what is " digital Bangladesh"?

Is it a brilliant project to teach I.T. to 5 % Bangladeshis, who are enjoying other community facilities too!!
How many people will benefit from such a bogus master-plan?

What is there in this project....for millions of people in the 'muddy paddy field '  and millions who live

"  under beautiful skies, whether full of rain-clouds or bright blue with cotton flakes of clouds, of these monsoon months of Bengal ".

People have been fooled with sweet talks for years and you must be " the new singer in the block ".

The subject line "Digital Bangladesh?" is a sarcastic jab at the election campaign promises of the AL who won a landslide victory at the last election and is now the major party of a coalition that has formed the Govt.

Like the rest of the Alochona members I got the joke, and having gotten it I should feel pretty smart and full of a sense of superiority.  Or so is the intention of bd-mailer who never tires of these jabs at the current Govt.  After all, here I am typing on my computer and not at that muddy paddy field where a family is hard at work planting the rice. Our intrepid bd-mailer, one presumes, never leaves his/her computer to glance at the beautiful skies, whether full of rain-clouds or bright blue with cotton flakes of clouds, of these monsoon months of Bengal.  He and his computer are probably nowhere near Bangladesh.

I was actually thoroughly delighted by the photograph of this wonderful scene of Bangalee innovation in the midst of want and dearth.  I said a prayer of goodwill for the boy riding on the 'moi' pulled by his parents wading in the rich mud. How much happier is he than the boy of his age stuck in the city of Dhaka with no playground either in school or in the neighborhood of his apartment complex.

What would have pleased bd mailer and his dumbed down cheerleaders in Alochona? the picture of a 4-yr old in front of a desktop computer playing violent video games? May be thats what the BNP thugs would publicize when they come to POWER with the message that the real 'Digital Bangladesh' is one where you abandon agriculture and devote yourself to money-laundering a la Tarek Zia and Coco using computerized cell phone or other gizmo.
