[mukto-mona] Re: Atrocites on Hindu Minorities continue

Dear Prof. Roy and Prof. Das and others:

Without any prejudice to any religion I may be allowed to say that
most of the religions are good in origin. The religions have been
made otherwise from time to time by its followers and traders.

Sometimes we may think that religion is responsible for all the
unhappiness we go through in our lives. I do not agree. Rather we
may say that decline in moral value and good conscience are
responsible for all the unhappiness we go through in our lives.

The Western countries mostly officially 'separated' church from the
state and generated the present state of declined social values and
cruelties. Excluding their capital gains, they continue to be in the
19th century. Sometimes tend to go further backward.

Most of the religions are guides for good living. But various myths
and taboos were injected into it. Islam wanted to get rid of those
myths and taboos. But again with the passage of time some
irregularities have been emerging due to poverty and educational
backwardness of the Muslims. Their present status is full of
ignorance and social ills.

What I pointed out above is already foretold in The Koran. As a
Muslim I must not point out any ills and taboos of other religions,
which are many and mostly known.

Today, what we need is understanding. We should love all human
beings. We should serve all humans. One cannot love by hating
others. Hatred may create partition, division, war, and killing etc.

[Generally the people of greater united Bengal are not religious
minded. Most of them adopt some religion for getting better social
identity only. Never in any country of the world so many people
became converted and changed their religion into another overnight
as we find in the greater united Bengal during the last 5,000 years.
From non-religious to semi-Hinduism; to Hinduism. etc.; to Buddhism;
to again Hinduism, etc.; to Christianity etc. This is also partly
applicable to the Bengalee Muslims but in most cases with the
Bengalee Muslims it was mass migration from outside of the greater
Bengal (Khondoker Fazle Rabbi explained this in his book on the
Origin of the Mussalmans of Bengal). I just add this portion for
understanding the status of spiritual beliefs of the Bengalees. I do
not want to pass any comments here as to the ritualistic practices
of the Bengalees.]

Looking forward to hearing from the learned readers of the Mkto-Mona
forum.

[mukto-mona] Re: Muslim Minorities in West Bengal and Assam

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49830

Well there is an article I came across which dealt with the
minorities of west bengal. Maybe it will help us understand the
situation better. btw the speaker of the west bengal legislative
assembly is a kashmiri not bangalee.

No equality of employment for West Bengal Muslims
By Mohammad Ashfaque, Calcutta

Article 15 of the Constitution of India prohibits `discrimination on
grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of
them.' Article 16 of the Constitution guarantees `equality of
opportunity in matters of employment.' Article 30 of our Constitution
confers `Right of minorities to establish and administer educational
institutions of their choice.'

Though our Constitution has laid down a general rule that there shall
be an equality of opportunity for all citizens in matters relating to
employment or appointments to any office under the State, these
fundamental principles have literally remained mere pious
declarations and are being flagrantly violated. Muslim job seekers,
who have registered their names in the employment exchanges in West
Bengal, have for more than two decades, suffered from continuous
discrimination and unfavorable bias in the matter of submission of
names to the employers by the employment exchanges. They are denied
even the opportunity of being properly considered by the employers
for placement against existing vacancies.

During the tenure of the last Congress Government in West Bengal
(1972-77), led by the then Chief Minister, Shri Siddhartha Shankar
Ray, some positive steps were initiated to solve the unemployment
problem of the state and to ensure equality of opportunity to all
citizens including members of the Muslim community in matters of
recruitment in government jobs.

Apart from taking steps for adequate representation of all
communities in state services Shri Siddhartha Shankar Ray had ensured
that at least one Muslim police officer was posted in each and every
Police Station in West Bengal. Prior to this the members of Muslim
Community were very poorly represented in services under Calcutta and
West Bengal Police Forces. The steps taken by Ray, had created
confidence among the minorities and inspired them to take a bright
and hopeful view of things to come and to expect that things would
improve and they would no longer be kept isolated from the national
mainstream.

Immediately after coming to power, by an executive order, the CPI(M)
dominated Left Front government decided to process all recruitment
through the employment exchanges. The annual reports of the
Government of West Bengal - 'Labour in West Bengal' - published
annually by the Labour Department of the state government present a
dismal picture of the poor performances of the employment exchanges
and the State Directorate of Employment, West Bengal.

During the last ten years (1990 to 1999) the number of registered
unemployed on the live registers in West Bengal increased from
48,20,331 at the end of 1990 to 55,55,952 by the end of 1999. During
these ten years 47,66,176 new job seekers had registered their names
with the Employment Exchanges in the State. Names of 21,09,560 (40 %
of the average number of job seekers on the live register) were
submitted during this period to the employers for consideration
against vacancies.

During the same period (1990 to 1999) 291,768 Muslims had come
forward to register themselves but the names of only 70,945 Muslims
(10.58 % of the average number of Muslims on the live register) were
submitted to the employers for consideration in connection with
appointments.

The average number of job seekers on the live register of employment
exchanges in West Bengal, during the last ten years, was 52,72,997.
The average number of Muslims on the live registers during this
period was 6,70,443 (12.71 % of the total on the live register). Out
of this total average of 52,72,997, the average number of submission
during this period was 2,10,956 (4 % of the total job seekers of all
categories on the live registers) per annum. In the case of Muslims
out of the average number of 6,70,443 (12.71 %) Muslim Job Seekers on
the live registers the average submission was only 7,095 (1 % of the
total names of Muslim Job Seekers on the live registers) per annum.

Despite the fact that about 12.71 % of the registered job seekers,
available on the live register of employment exchanges were Muslims
the total 21,09,560 names submitted during these ten years (1990-99)
to the employers for consideration against vacancies included the
names of only 70,945 Muslims (3.36 % of the total submissions).

During these ten years (1990-99) out of the 93,156 registered
unemployed persons placed in employment through the employment
exchanges only 4,232 (4.54 %) were Muslims. Out of the total
21,09,560 submissions made by the employment exchanges during the ten
year period 93,156 persons (4%) had succeeded in getting placements
in Jobs. In the case of Muslims out of the 70,945 names of registered
Muslim job seekers, whose names were submitted to the employers
during these ten years, 4,232 (6 %) were successful in getting jobs
through the employment exchanges.

Success rate in the case of Muslims (4,232 out of 70,945) i.e. 6 % of
the total Muslim names submitted for consideration by the employers)
was, therefore, higher than the average success rates in all
categories (93156 out of 21,09,560 i.e. 4 % of the total
submissions ).

This shows that the Muslim job seekers are not in any way inferior to
others. Muslims of West Bengal do not lag behind others in meeting
the criteria for being selected for jobs but still they are denied
equality in employment opportunity. They are placed in a
disadvantageous position simply because of bias and prejudice in
matters of submission of names. The concerned authorities of the
state government are not doing proper justice with the registered
Muslim job seekers in the matter of submission and are submitting
very few names of Muslim job seekers for consideration by the
employers. This discrimination has been going on for a long time. For
the Muslims in West Bengal the Constitutional guarantees of equality
in employment opportunity have, therefore, proved to be false
promises. This has given rise to serious resentment and frustration
among the unemployed Muslims of West Bengal. Their confidence in the
Employment Exchanges and the Employment Policy of the State
Government has been badly shaken. This is evident from the fact that
over the years the number of unemployed Muslims coming forward to
register their names in the Employment Exchanges has fallen from
47,908 in 1990 to an average of 27,096 per year during 1991-99.
During this period more than 1,60,000 frustrated Muslim job seekers
did not renew their registrations or had got their names cancelled
from the live register of employment exchanges.

According to the Census reports, population of Muslims in West
Bengal, at the time of 1991 census, was 1,60,75,836 (17 % of the
total 9,52,22,853 Muslim population of India).

So far as concentration of Muslim population is concerned West Bengal
is second only to Uttar Pradesh, which has a Muslim population of
2,41,09,684 (25% of the total Muslim population of India).
1,60,75,836 Muslims in West Bengal constituted 24 % of the total
population of the State. Scheduled Castes account for 24 % and
Scheduled Tribes for 6 % of the population of the State in 1991. The
population of Other Backward Classes in West Bengal is estimated to
be about 10 % of the total population of the State. Under the
Government orders, 37 % of the jobs in the West Bengal State services
are reserved for Scheduled Castes (22 % ), Scheduled Tribes (6%) and
Other Backward Classes (9 %).

Though Muslims are inadequately represented in the State services
there is no provision for any reservation for them in West Bengal.
Some other States like Kerala have provided statutory reservations
for Muslims in jobs and admissions in educational institutions.
Muslims account for 23% of the population of Kerala. Provisions for
reservation have been made for them by the Government of Kerala under
Articles 15 (4) and 16 (4) of the Constitution of India and there has
been no legal hurdle to such reservations.

Muslims, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward
Classes account for approx. 64 % of the total population of West
Bengal. Others (excluding Muslims, SC, ST, & OBC) account for only 36
% of the total population of the State. This 36 % population has
received the benefit of 62.81 % of the submission of names by the
employment exchanges for consideration by the employers and 62.43 %
of the placements in jobs made through the employment exchanges in
West Bengal during 1999. Muslims constituting 24 % of the population
of the State and accounting for 13 % of the live register of
employment exchanges received the benefit of only 4.18 % of the
submissions and 4.95 % of the placements made during 1999 through the
Employment Exchanges in West Bengal. 2,49,769 names were submitted to
the above employers by the employment exchanges during 1999 which
included the names of only 10,458 (4 % Muslims). No wonder the
Muslims got only 717 (4.95 %) placements during 1999.

A pertinent question agitating the minds of the Muslims of West
Bengal is whether the fundamental rights and constitutional
guarantees embodied in our Constitution are mere illusion.

Apart from denial of equality of opportunities in matters of
employment, Muslims of West Bengal are further aggrieved because they
find that even the constitutional rights 'to establish and administer
educational institutions of their own choice', guaranteed under
Article 30 of the Constitution , is denied to them by the state
government. The case of Milli Al Amin College is an example of the
arbitrariness of the state government. This College has been built in
Calcutta as a 'Minority Institution' with donations received from
munificent Muslims and assistance from the Al Amin Educational Trust,
Bangalore. The state government has not contributed anything.

The College was built in 1992 but the state government has refused to
recognize Milli Al Amin College as a Minority Institution. On the
other hand the state government has been trying to impose such
conditions which tend to deprive the Muslim community of the
substance of their rights guaranteed under Article 30 (1) of the
Constitution.

The above factual analysis dispel the myth that the Left Front
Government is friendly with the minorities. It does not auger well
that while we have 'solemnly resolved to constitute India into a
Sovereign, Socialist Secular Democratic Republic and pledged 'to
secure to all citizens justice and equality of status and of
opportunity' the religious minority in West Bengal is left to feel
that it is not only inadequately represented in the services under
the State but is also being denied equality of opportunity in
employment and education. The members of the Muslim community in West
Bengal have well grounded reasons to be aggrieved and to feel that
proper justice is not being done with them by the State. The matter
should receive serious attention and consideration by all concerned.

RE: [mukto-mona] Why India bleeds?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49854

This writing of Mr Jiten Roy is fairly correct.
Those who said that "religious fundamentalists, among them, are just a few",
is just a nonsense and irresponsible comments.
Religious fundamentalists are from their sector and they(fundamentalists)
are getting indirect support from this so called moderate group. How?
They way is as such - these group never take any action against the
fundamentalists or even don't put any comment or article against them.
However, they are hugely sensitive when any one make any comment against
their(so called moderate) religion -----

[mukto-mona] Re:Muslims in West Bengal and Assam

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49849

The percentage of Muslims in Assam is 30.4% and they are the single
largest group more than the Assamese Hindus at 29.3%.The state has
the second highest percentage of Muslim population after J&K.
They play a decisive role in state politics and no political party
can dare to displease them.

The Muslim percentage in West Bengal is 27%.
Mamata is betting heavily on Siddiqullah Chowdhury of Jamia-Ulema-e-
Hind in her quest to dislodge the Marxists. Taslima's eviction would
not have possible from a supposedly Marxist bastion had the situation
been otherwise.

With such high numbers of Muslim voters any govt can ill afford to
permit atrocities on Muslims and any attempt to do so has to be
effectively tackled for political compulsions if not anything else.

Re: [mukto-mona] Krishnadwaipayan Vyasa

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49850

Both Mahabharata and Ramayana are echoes of Illiad and Odyssey. Bible came
to Europe about a thousand years after the Trojan civilization. Dr.
Bhadhuri is a bigot with literary ability. The cults of Rama and Krishna
have no place in the Vedic civilization. In my opinion, Rama was Amun-Ra in
Egypt, and Krishna was the sky god Geb. Seeta is the mother earth. Ravana
is none other than darkness of the night symbolized. Long before Tulsidas
or Valmiki, there was Ramakatha. About 2500 years ago, the dominant
civilization in India was Budhist. Geeta itself is a concoction of
post-Upanishad times.

RE: [ALOCHONA] Bangladesh has record number of child brides

Dear Cyrus,

Do you believe in practicing religion in privacy? If yes, let us focus on that leaving behind everything else. This is the only way all radicalism can be kept in control. Most secular people believe it, but most religious radicals oppose it. That is where you can put your energy. Thanks.

Mr. Hossain:

Thanks for your posting. As someone living in NY, I know fully well what you mean. 9/11 changed the very way we live in this world, and people's perception of the muslims. The senseless killings in the name of religion, and the senseless war that was advanced by the fascist Christian right - I despise them all. I personally find no difference between those ignorant nazis who call us "sand niggers" or "towel heads", and those muslims who call jews, christians, hindus, buddhists, or anyone "kafir", "infidel", "dogs", and everything that is available in their ignorance dictionary.

Hatred and intolerance, albeit a human characteristic, must be eliminated. Those of us, who still believe that "live and let live" and practice our faith in privacy, need to stand up against those who can label anyone a "savage" and justify their propaganda against them. This must stop, and this must stop now.

Cyrus

Dear Alochock Cyruus:

You probably already know your free advice to correct Mr. Turkman will fall on the deaf ears.   I agree with you fully that the word "Savages" is as offensive as the word "Niggers".  These are highly offensive racial slurs have been used by Western colonial forces as well as the Western missionaries in the past and they are still using them to this day.  In the US if anyone uses these words while committing crimes will be subject to Hate crime and FBI will be all over.  These days Muslims in the US are being called "Sand Niggers" another highly offensive racial slur.  In fact I have been called a Sand Nigger because I don't look like a mainstream white American.  However, majority in America understands our plight and are very empathetic.  Anyone who uses these words in 21st century is still living in the dark ages and could not be more ignorant lacking all senses and civility.  BTW, I have posted my advise to all (about Mr. Turkman) yesterday.   Please read my piece, I am posting it again just in case you have missed it.  Also, I stand by my comment that Mr. Turkman is an "equal opportunity offender or hater".  Thank you.

Dear Alochocks:

 Greetings from USA!

When someone copies from another source without citing the source or its author, in Higher Ed, we call it plagiarism, i.e., a fancy word for "stealing".  It would not surprise me at all if Mr. Turkmen has done this, who has called everyone in Alochona a liar, including the forum itself.  Not too long ago he even claimed that Alochona was spreading lies on the web.   If this is true its him who is putting out all the baseless, concocted lies about everything.   In my opinion he has exceeded all norms of professionalism and netiquette and deserves a good slap in the rear if not completely barred from this or any other forum he takes part in for his behavior.  The least one can do in this forum is respect each other and maintain civility without personal attacks.

Mr.. Turkman seems to bear a "holier than thou" attitude and keeps pounding the forum with opinions that are not substantiated.  After reading so many of his offensive postings I must conclude that he is an "Equal opportunity offender or hater",  especially so for followers of the Islamic faith.  I know for sure he has not met a single challenge put forward by alochok Mr. Mufassil Islam.  I admire Mr. Islam for standing up for everyone.

Let there be peace!

That's all folks!

Re: [mukto-mona] Why India bleeds?

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49837

Akbar Bhai,

I am speaking about all religious
fundamentalisms in all societies. Most people defend their religions by saying
that religious fundamentalists, among them, are just a few. Majority does not subscribe
to the extreme ideological views. So, the entire society or the religion should
not be blamed. They are correct. But, the question is, how to handle those few
who follow extreme views. We forget that, they may be a few, their impacts, on
the society, are enormous. It can be compared to the situation of a snake in a
dark room. Every inch of the room appears to be filled with the snake, and it's
hard to step in the room unless we open the door and shine light in the room. Similarly, they may be a few in a society but
they are snakes and the entire society is under suspicion. The door to the
society needs to be wide open to receive outside light so that everyone can see
those snakes. There is no other way.

How about privacy? Would it be helpful if I try to maintain
my privacy when I go to my doctor? The answer is
NO. I have to be upfront about my problems and symptoms with my doctors. Therefore, the only way this
particular problem can be solved is through whole-hearted upfront cooperation and participation from the affected
society.  I am ready to give up some of my privacies and rights, if needed. So far, what I have seen is that patients are suing doctors as victims. We have a long way to go. .....

Re: [ALOCHONA] Bangladesh has record number of child brides

Mr.

Re: [ALOCHONA] Blood and Tears

Dear Saj....you should go to hell, and on your way, take that book by Qutubuddin Aziz with you. While you are at it, you should also take those pro-Pakistani bengalis, and all of you can happily rot in hell for the rest of eternity.

As a son of a freedom fighter, I find this kind publications offensive. I know that my father was not a "rebel", nor did they execute or slain pro-Pakistani and non-Bengalis. Instead they fought against the Paki Army. What our ancestors could not do, however, is wipe off these rotten bastards, who after 38 some odd years, still spread this vile propaganda. Hopefully, the ignorant half of our nation would come to its senses and rise against the pro-Paki and anti-Bangladesh fractions in Bangladesh, and claim the independence that is rightfully ours.

Until that day comes, people like you, at least in my view, are the worst of the worst. The Bengali holocaust is very much in our memory, and those who deny it, are no better than the nazis.

Enjoy your time in hell.

Cyrus

Subject: [ALOCHONA] Blood and Tears

Excerpts from "Blood and Tears"
Book by Qutubuddin Aziz

Typical of the open-air, human abattoirs operated by the Awami League-led rebels in East Pakistan in 1971 is this photograph of multiple-executions done by a Mukti-Bahini killer squad in Dacca Race Course. The pro-Pakistan Bengali and non-Bengali victims were tortured before being slain

Looking at the tragic events of March 1971 in retrospect, I must confess that even I, although my press service commanded a sizeable network of district correspondents in the interior of East Pakistan, was not fully aware of the scale, ferocity and dimension of the province-wide massacre of the non-Banglis.

I must stress, with all the force and sincerity at my command, that this bock is not intended to be a racist indictment of the Bengalis as a nation. In writing and publishing this book, I am not motivated by any revanchist obsession or a wish to condemn my erstwhile Bengali compatriots as a nation. Just as it is stupid to condemn the great German people for the sins of the Nazis, it would be foolish to blame the Bengali people as a whole for the dark deeds of the Awami League militants and their accomplices.

I have incorporated in this book the acts of heroism and courage of those brave and patriotic Bengalis who sheltered and protected, at great peril to themselves, their terror-stricken non-Bengali friends and neighbours. On the basis of the heaps of eye-witness accounts, which I have carefully read, sifted and analysed, I do make bold to say that the vast majority of Bengalis disapproved of and was not a party to the barbaric atrocities inflicted on the hapless non-Bengalis by the Awami League's terror machine and the Frankensteins and vampires it unloosed. This silent majority, it seemed, was awed, immobilised and neutralised by the terrifying power, weapons and ruthlessness of a misguided minority hell-bent on accomplishing the secession of East Pakistan.

The sheaves of eye-witness accounts, documented in this book, prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the massacre of West Pakistanis, Biharis and other non-Bengalis in East Pakistan had begun long before the Pakistan Army took punitive action against the rebels late in the night of March 25, 1971. It is also crystal clear that the Awami League's terror machine was the initiator and executor of the genocide against the non-Bengalis which exterminated at least half a million of them in less than two months of horror and trauma. Many witnesses have opined that the federal Government acted a bit too late against the insurgents. The initial success of the federal military action is proved by the fact that in barely 30 days, the Pakistan Army, with a combat strength of 38,717 officers and men in East Pakistan, had squelched the Awami League's March-April, 1971, rebellion all over the province.

The hundreds of eye-witnesses from towns and cities of East Pakistan, whose testimonies are documented in this book, are unanimous in reporting that the slaughter of West Pakistanis, Biharis, and other non-Bangalis and of some pro-Pakistan Bengalis had begun in the early days of the murderous month of March 1971.

Looking at the tragic events of March 1971 in retrospect, I must confess that even I, although my press service commanded a sizeable network of district correspondents in the interior of East Pakistan, was not fully aware of the scale, ferocity and dimension of the province-wide massacre of the non-Banglis.

A scene of Mukti Bahini mass murder of Biharis in Dacca on December 18, 1971. A rebel soldier lifts his boot to strike a bleeding bayoneted boy who showed signs of life. Dead bodies of other slain non-Bengalis lie in the foreground.

The 170 eye-witnesses, whose testimonies or interviews are contained in this book in abridged form have been chosen from a universe of more than 5,000 repatriated non-Bengali families. I had identified, after some considerable research, 55 towns and cities in East Pakistan where the abridgement of the non-Bengali population in March and early April 1971 was conspicuously heavy. The collection and compilation of these eye-witness accounts was started in January 1974 and completed in twelve weeks. A team of four reporters, commissioned for interviewing the witnesses from all these 55 towns and cities of East Pakistan, worked with intense devotion to secure their testimony. Many of the interviews were prolonged because the Witnesses broke down in a flurry of sobs and tears as they related the agonising stories of their wrecked lives. I had issued in February 1974 an appeal in the newspapers for such eye-witness accounts, and I am grateful to the many hundreds of witnesses who promptly responded to my call.

"I am the lone survivor of a group of ten Pathans who were employed as Security Guards by the Delta Construction Company in the Mohakhali locality in Dacca; all the others were slaughtered by the Bengali rebels in the night of March 25, 1971", said 40-year-old Bacha Khan.

"I heard the screams of an Urdu-speaking girl who was being ravished by her Bengali captors but I was so scared that I did not have the courage to emerge from hiding" said a 24-year-old Zahid Abdi, who was employed in a trading firm in Dacca. He escaped the slaughter of the non-Bengalis in the crowded New Market locality of Dacca on March 23, 1971 and was sheltered by a God-fearing Bengali in his shop. The killers raped their non-Bengali teenage victim at the back of the shop and later on slayed her.

As the victim did not die in a single bayonet strike, another Mukti-Bahini killer plunged his bayonet in to the writhing Bihari's chest. Dead bodies of Bihari and Bengali victims lie strewn over the execution ground as Mukti-Bahini killers and their accomplices watch the butchery with sadist pleasure.

"My only daughter has been insane since she was forced by her savage tormentors to watch the brutal murder of her husband", said Mukhtar Ahmed Khan, 43, while giving an account of his suffering during the Ides of March 1971 in Dacca…."In the third week of March 1971, a gang of armed Bengali rebels raided house of my son-in-law and overpowered him. He was a courageous Youngman and he resisted the attackers. My daughter also resisted the attackers but they were far too many and they were well armed. They tied up my son-in-law and my daughter with ropes and they forced her to watch as they slit the throat of her husband and ripped his stomach open in the style of butchers. She fainted and lost consciousness. Since that dreadful day she has been mentally ill."

Shamim Akhtar, 28, whose husband was employed as a clerk in the Railway office in Dacca, lived in a small house in the Mirpur locality there.

She described her tragedy in these words:

"On December 17, 1971, the Mukti Bahini cut off the water supply to our homes. We used to get water from a nearby pond; it was polluted and had a bad odour. I was nine months pregnant. On December 23, 1971, I gave birth to a baby girl. No midwife was available and my husband helped me at child birth. Late at night, a gang of armed Bengalis raided our house, grabbed my husband and trucked him away. I begged them in the name of God to spare him as I could not even walk and my children were too small. The killers were heartless and I learnt that they murdered my husband. After five days, they returned and ordered me and my children to vacate the house as they claimed that it was now their property."

A Bihari victim grabbed by Mukti-Bahini killers, begging for mercy.

Zaibunnissa Haq, 30, whose journalist husband, Izhar-ul-Haque, worked as a columnist in the Daily Watan in Dacca, gave this account of her travail in 1971: "…..On December 21, a posse of Mukti Bahini soldiers and some thugs rode into our locality with blazing guns and ordered us to leave our house as, according to them, no Bihari could own a house in Bangladesh. For two days, we lived on bare earth in an open space and we had nothing to eat. Subsequently, we were taken to a Relief Camp by the Red Cross."

Nasima Khatoon, 25, lived in a rented house in the Pancho Boti locality in Narayanganj. Her husband, Mohammad Qamrul Hasan, was employed in a Vegetable Oil manufacturing factory. Repatriated to Karachi in January 1974, along with her 4-year-old orphaned daughter, from a Red Cross Camp in Dacca, Nasima gave this hair-raising account of her travail in 1971:

"At gun point, our captors made us leave our house and marched us to an open square where more than 500 non –Bengali old men, women and children were detained. Some 50 Bengali gunmen led us through swampy ground towards a deserted school building. On the way, the 3-year-old child of a hapless captive woman died in her arms. She asked her captors to allow her to dig a small grave and bury the child. The tough man in the lead snorted a sharp 'NO', snatched the body of the dead child from her wailing mother and tossed it into the river"

The Awami League's rebellion of March 1971 took the heaviest toll of non-Bengali lives in the populous port city of Chittagong. Although the Government of Pakistan's White Paper of August 1971 on the East Pakistan crisis estimated the non-Bengali death toll in Chittagong and its neighbouring townships during the Awami League's insurrection to be a little under 15,000, the testimony of hundreds of eye-witnesses interviewed for this book gives the impression that more than 50,000 non-Bengalis perished in the March 1971 carnage. Thousands of dead bodies were flung into the Karnaphuli river and the Bay of Bengal.

Savage killings also took place in the Halishahar, Kalurghat and Pahartali localities where the Bengali rebel soldiers poured petrol and kerosine oil around entire blocks, igniting them with flame-throwers and petrol-soaked jute balls, then mowed down the non-Bengali innocents trying to escape the cordons of fire. In the wanton slaughter in the last week of March and early April, 1971, some 40,000 non-Bengalis perished in Chittagong and its neighbourhood. The exact death toll, which could possibly be much more will never be known because of the practice of burning dead bodies or dumping them in the river and the sea.

The uniformed killer puffing the cigarette to singe the eyes of the terrified prey. Eye gouging and burning the skin of victims was a favourite torture method of the rebels.

Personal Comments:

The fact is that the ill-minded political leadership of 1971 are the primary responsibles of all such attrocities. No matter, whether a Bihari got killed or a Bangali assassinated. It is our responsibility to save our generations from lies and propaganda. Let's not allow the enemies to make their ways in our societies.

Sahebabad Incident Follow up

Today (14. 09. 08) an investigating team organized by HRCBM_BD and Sampriti Mancha visited the village Sahebabad, Kaliakair. The teem led by Dr. Rashid e Mahbub, a reputed and Ex-Pro vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujubur Rahman Medical University consists of persons like:

  1. Dr. D. Dilip Datta, a prominent Christan leader
  2. Dr. Saurav Sikder, Associate Professor, DU
  3. Mr. Robayet Ferdous, Associate Professor, DU
  4. Advocate Sadiya Arefin
  5. A Representative of Mahila Parishad
  6. A local Protham Alo correspondent

The team left Dhaka early in the morning and arrived the place of event around 11-30. They spend two hours talking to victim family members including those of Paritosh, the central figure of the dispute, local elites and OC of Kaliakuir police station.

The Story

The story as appeared to the team runs as follows. A piece of land once belonging to ancestors of Paritosh was said to be exchanged with an Indian party long before. But the party never occupied the land in question. Ownerless land was in illegal possession of one Hazrat Ali of the locality, known to be a notorious person. Some how Paritosh came to know and make an inquiry to Tahsil office (my guess) from where he came to know that the exchange was illegal and hence the land went back to Paritosh and his other brothers. Being unable to evict Hazrat Ali from the land he sold it (~ 3 acres of worth not less than 60-70 lakhs taka) to one Muslim partner, Rana, another powerful man of the locality, perhaps more powerful than Hazrat Ali in wealth and influence. Mr. Rana in no time took possession of the land evicting Hazrat Ali. This is the root cause of the incident of September 1, 2008.  In an attempt to force Paritosh and his five brother's families to flee from the village he led the attack on September 1 night. The real intention is to forcibly grab the properties of Paritosh and others.

Our team had the feeling that although the five families, victims of September 1, are still in somewhat panic, most of the members including the women have returned. A small police camp has been set up in the village. Hazrat Ali and gong are not been seen in the scene of incident.

Our team talked to the dc Gazipur on their return journey and handed over my letter of memorandum in which I asked the dc to set up a police camp, which he did, and round up the culprits. Many thanks to him that he obliged my request in an attempt to protect the minority families.

The team returned to Dhaka at 5 p.m. The team leader briefed me of their experience. He told me that their visit has made an impact on the locality, and the victims felt reassured that they are not alone. Dr. Mahbub further told me that the civil and police administration of the locality has taken the matter seriously.

Let us hope for the best.
