Re: [mukto-mona] Nationalism and Politics.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50187

Mr. Akbar Hossain blamed creation of Pakistan for our misfortune.
Can I ask him a question:If Pakistan were not created can we call our motherland Bangladesh an independent nation today. We have to appreciate creation of Pakistan for the creation of Bangladesh. Without the creation of Pakistan, creation of Bangladesh was imposssible. We could have peremanently bocome another Hyderabad, Kashmir or Sikim if we were with India today.
If we look at the history ,without creation of Malayasia ,Singapore never have been an independent nation. Thanks to the genorius efforts of Tenku Abdur Rahman who willingly agreed seperation of Singapore from Malay peninsula. Therefore, still this days Singaporians celebrate both Malayasia and Songapores independence days with respect and honor.
Regarding or two leaders:My personal understanding is that both Hasina and Khaleda should not lead the next elected government rather lead their parties. Let the party select a competent honest person to lead the government. As party Presidents Hasina, Khaleda can guide the government and the opposition from ouside the government. If they stay outside of the government they can identify national priorities better than from inside the government.
One other most important matter is the creation of good cordial personal relationship between two Netris. Personal Hatred should not prevent them to discuss national priorities/problems betwen them with openn mind.

[ALOCHONA] Fw: RE: Kashmir:The Answer Lies In Autonomy

In the massive and peaceful demos held recently, non-stop for many days, the people of occupied Kashmir actually said that they want freedom. But the people of Kashmir want to hear about the most brutal massacres of 80 thousand kashmiris (according to Arundhati Roy) and the most ruthless military repressions perpetrated on them since 1947, above all, they want to hear about freedom and not about the hypocricy of India's 'secularism'. On another occasion, I said, 'The Indian government has always been massacring, or condoning the massacres of, the Dalits, the Muslims, the poor, the minority communities and the minority nationalities.' On top of this, their caste system makes their social fabric divided into innumerable layers of inequality of both status and rights, by birth and for life, which is worse than slavery, in that a slave can be bought and freed, but once one is born in a particular cast, or as untouchable, one cannot be freed from it. And Ajit Bhattarjea is talking about Indian 'secularism'!!

The Answer Lies In Autonomy

Sheikh Abdullah's attempt to reinforce secularism by Kashmir's example requires exceptional unity of direction in New Delhi
AJIT BHATTACHARJEA

IN HIS article in TEHELKA, Arun Jaitley traces the problems we face in Kashmir to Jawaharlal Nehru. In a sense he is right. Kashmir would not have been part of India if Nehru had not been Prime Minister in October 1947, when the state was faced with the decision of whether to accede to India or Pakistan. It would have gone to Pakistan. It was the commitment of Gandhi and Nehru to secularism that attracted the Muslim people of Kashmir to link their future with India despite Partition. The following extracts from the preface to my biography of the great Kashmiri leader, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, confirm this.
The contrast between the cordial atmosphere of Srinagar and the foetid communal fear still stalking Delhi in October 1947, from where I had flown, exceeded even the first enchanting impression of the beauty of the Valley. It provided a ray of hope that secularism could survive in India. In the capital of India, as in much of the north of the country, Muslims were under attack in reprisal for the bloody eviction of Hindus and Sikhs from the newly-born Islamic state of Pakistan. Yet, in the capital of Kashmir, there was no sign of religious tension. Its Muslim inhabitants were helping newly arrived elements of the Indian army, Hindu and Sikh, to defend the city against the advancing Pathan lashkars. The invaders came from the tribal area between Pakistan and Afghanistan and had been armed by Pakistan. Though portrayed as fellow Muslims intending to free Kashmiris from the oppressive rule of a Hindu Maharaja, they plundered all who came in their path.
The man whose charismatic leadership strengthened this unique delinking of nationalism from religious intolerance was Sheikh Abdullah. His commitment to secularism and socialism, and his campaign for azaadi — freedom from oppression — motivated his people to rebuff the appeal of religious politics. The foundations of the transformation were laid by changing the name of his party from Muslim Conference to Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, open to all communities. The historic date was June 11, 1939. The manifesto of the new party was no less revolutionary. Echoing the socialist thinking of the 1930s, it promised, among other reforms, land to the tiller without compensation, a commitment that laid the foundations of the party's popularity among the vast majority of Kashmiris. Abdullah came to be known as Sher-e-Kashmir, Lion of Kashmir.
Secularism was further strengthened and history made on October 26, 1947, when, with the support of the Abdullahs, the predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir joined the Indian Union instead of the adjoining Islamic state of Pakistan. Gandhi was moved to tell a prayer meeting on December 29, 1947: "It must be evident to the outsider, as it is to me, that Kashmir must be lost to the invaders, otherwise called the raiders, if Sheikh Abdullah Saheb's effort to hold together the Muslims and the minority [in the Valley] fails . . . My sole hope and prayer is that Kashmir become a beacon light in this benighted subcontinent."

Earlier, reacting to continuing fratricidal killings in Delhi and elsewhere, Gandhi had besought his Maker on his birthday, October 2, to take him away; he could not witness them any longer. And Nehru announced that he would resign if people did not have faith in his secular leadership. But as long as he was at the helm of affairs, India would not become a Hindu state: "I am at liberty to give up my responsibility if the people of India cease to have faith in the lead that I give. If they do not subscribe to my ideals and are not prepared to cooperate with me, then I will have no choice but to resign and fight for the establishment of a state where every citizen enjoys equal rights irrespective of his religion."

On November 2, a week after the first contingent of indian troops landed in Srinagar, a revitalised Prime Minister broadcast to the nation: "It would be well if this lesson was understood by the whole of India which has been poisoned by communal strife. Under the inspiration of a great leader, Sheikh Abdullah, the people of the Valley, Muslim, Hindu and Sikh, were together in the defence of their common country against the invader." Secularism had become an article of faith for Sheikh Abdullah's party and the basis of his friendship with Nehru. They formed a volunteer militia to resist the tribal attack and provide transport and guides to the Indian soldiers . . .

Sheikh Abdullah rose to be Prime Minister of the state. But he became the target of communal forces let loose by the decision to partition British India. Against this background, the bold attempt to reinforce secularism by Kashmir's example required exceptional unity of direction and purpose in New Delhi. Instead, the rise of Abdullah evoked contrary reactions. While Nehru backed him for his secular and socialist commitment, his powerful Home Minister, Vallabhbhai Patel, distrusted his demand for autonomy and represented forces that doubted the loyalty of Muslims to India after Partition. Some Congress leaders sided with Patel, together with Hindu communal leaders. Differences on Kashmir with Nehru led Patel to offer to resign.
In May 1951, Abdullah made a historic address to the inaugural session of the Kashmir Constituent Assembly. While regarding the option of independence as attractive, he described it as impractical and stressed the advantages of an autonomous link with India, despite Muslims being in a minority in the country. He rejected joining Pakistan outright. The address was prefaced by recalling the lasting impress of Kashmir's traditions of tolerance, later known as kashmiriyat. But kashmiriyat also meant resisting too close an integration with India. It was Nehru's recognition of Kashmir's desire for self-determination that had persuaded Abdullah to link its fate with India's. This was reiterated in one of Nehru's great pronouncements in the Indian Parliament on August 7, 1952. Speaking on the relationship between Kashmir and India in the context of proposals for plebiscite, he said:

SO WHILE the accession was complete in law and in fact, the other fact that has nothing to do with the law remains, our pledge to the people of Kashmir — if you like to the people of the world — that this matter could be affirmed or cancelled by the people of Kashmir according to their wishes. We do not wish to win people against their will with the help of armed force; and if the people of Kashmir wish to part company with us, they may go their way and we shall go ours. We want no forced marriages, no forced unions".

Yet, when Abdullah demanded the special autonomous status promised when the state acceded, the campaign to dub him antinational gathered strength. He had countered Muslim communalism in the Valley but was falling victim to Hindu revivalism in India. Doubts about him were voiced in the Indian Parliament.

A letter from Abdullah to Nehru dated July 10, 1950, expressed the predicament in which he was placed: "It is clear that there are powerful influences at work in India who do not see eye to eye with you regarding your ideal of making the Union a truly secular state and your Kashmir policy . . . I have several times stated that we acceded to India because we saw there two bright stars of hope and aspiration, namely Gandhiji and yourself, and despite our having so many affinities with Pakistan we did not join it because we thought our programme will not fit their policy. If, however, we are driven to the conclusion that we cannot build our state on our own lines, suited to our genius, what answer can I give to our people?"
In his memoirs, Flames of the Chinar, Sheikh Abdullah claims: "One can say without fear of contradiction that the two-nation theory suffered its first defeat in Kashmir. Kashmir played a vital part in keeping the torch of secularism lit in India."
Democracy means rule by consent and secularism is the glue that holds different groups together. That is the lesson of the early days of Kashmir's association with the Indian Union . . . But increasing intolerance is eroding the glue in many parts of the country today. We need men with the vision of Nehru and Abdullah to remake history by trying to understand each other and reconcile differences without resorting to violence.

[mukto-mona] Non-Muslim

My forwarding note on the Tehelka expose of Nanavati report pertaining to Godhra progrom refers to anti-Islamists but some have arbitrarily equated them as non-Muslims. The two are fundamentally different perceptions.

Criticism of my note is an inalienable right for others and I like to dispassionately read them, although reading and acceptance are not necessarily synonymous.

But some critics are deceptively silent about the Tehelka reports.

By the way,Averthanus L. D'Souza's analysis on Hindutva is classy, at least to me.
Shubho Vijaya.

RE: [mukto-mona] UNDERSTANDING HINDUTVA - by Averthanus L. D'Souza.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/50188

Dear Prashantji,

Thank you for this important article. I am not surprised
that among other enemies of Hinduism, intellectuals are also included. In fact
all religious bigots sincerely consider the intellectuals as their enemies. The
reason is very clear. An intellectual is created by enlightenment and the
religious fanatics are created by ignorance. They are a bunch of lunatic's who
finds pleasure in killing and shedding blood. Look at the Islamic extremists
they have made it their business to kill the innocents in the name of religion.
The logical solace is that all the institutionalized religions are doomed because
no body can stop the surge of enlightenment in this world. The mankind will be
overcome by knowledge and an epoch is not very far when religions in the
present shape will find place in the history books only.

Regards

Akbar Hussain

[mukto-mona] Nationalism and Politics.

After going through much humiliation Khaleda Zia is talking sense but it's too late. Do we have to believe that this is a positive transformation in her political philosophy? Its unbelievable how deeply tainted politicians are so easily welcome back into the national mainstream in the third world countries. If corruption and thuggish mentality is the corner stone of politics in Bangladesh then why some people talks about honesty, transparency and morality ? These lofty words does not really mean anything because in the context of Bangladeshi politics. Sheikh Haseena and Khaleda Zia both are equally responsible for a most despicable dynastic political culture. Their incapability has brewed a shanty culture of political corruption through their relatives and cronies. They are fortunate that they did not belong to any western nation otherwise their names would have been wiped out from the political scene once for all with considerable jail terms.

The so called honest political pundits of Bangladesh did never really understand the root causes of this political bankruptcy.  It's definitely true that an honest political mindset is impossible without a true sense of national patriotism. This patriotism was evident during the Pakistani rule because at that time we knew that we are a distinct nation. The struggle for liberation was based on that platform which naturally united the whole Bengali nation. That young enthusiasm was corrupted by late Ziaur Rahman. He was singularly responsible to introduce and infuse religious poison into the Bangladeshi politics and Khaleda Zia and her cronies watered that poison tree with all their religious perversion. This lethal brew of religion and politics has ruined the chances of a national revival.

The nation has lost its moorings and the future has become uncertain.

Another historical truth must not be underestimated that the division of India in1947 and the creation Pakistan in the name of religion is a major factor in the aimless political culture in Pakistan and Bangladesh. This religious fervour tried to destroy the sense of real belongingness to history. This fatal mistake brought a hollowness which was filled with religious poison and now the dire realities are pointing to that bloody blunder.

[mukto-mona] Mr. Akbar Hussain deserves commendation for trying to follow the teaching of Nishkam Karma

Mr. Akbar Hussain deserves commendation for trying to follow the teaching of Nishkam Karma in the Gita. Indeed, I have found the advice of working without expecting rewards to be the most valuable teaching of this religious book.

In my adult life I have done very little of praying, giving it up entirely almost three decades back. As far as practicing religion goes, I belong to no religion. I have a completely open mind to read any religious book. Although I would not be so naïve to say that all religions are as good/bad.

To me, the teaching of doing good things for others for in-life and after-life rewards is fundamentally a mind-corrupting teaching. A good philosophy/religion would teach people to be good to others for goodness only, not for rewards. Of course the do-gooders would always feel good about themselves; the expectation of reward should be limited to that.

When it comes to doing good things for oneself, even there people who are too preoccupied with the reward aspect do not generally accomplish much. It is mostly enjoying the work and having fun with the work that allows people to reach the top.

I wish the exceptionally intelligent animals that the humans are, they would try to learn good things without prejudice against the source, and they would shun bad things without feeling the obligation of inheritance of the source from their primitive forefathers.

Sukhamaya Bain

[ALOCHONA] Fw: RE: Muslims of Shillong

It is neither a 'foolproof case' nor is it 'a case for fools'. It is a case for persecution of Muslims on flimsy, false, fabricated or even planted grounds, just as they do in the US, the UK, Europe and Israel in order to divert the attention of the public from their own vicious misdeeds. The Indian government has always been massacring, or condoning the massacres of, the Dalits, the Muslims, the poor, the minority communities and the minority nationalities. Externally, it has always been pursuing their heinous policies of mindless hegemonism. And, what is more, it is now much more strengthened as the US has declared them a 'strategic partner' and the UK 'a special friend'. We must therefore unite and strive to defeat the evil US-Israel-India axis, both within our country as well as internationally, such as, in the Middle-East. And in the end we, along with the people of the world, will certainly win against the enemies of the people!

A Case For Fools?
A 'foolproof ' case against a man sending threat by email in Shillong rests only on his confessions in police custody, writes TERESA REHMAN

With blaring music playing in the backdrop it's business as usual at Ark Cyber Café on the first floor at Howell Road in Laban. Two teenagers are sitting at a terminal and looking at some WWF boxer's photographs. The other terminals separated by wooden cubicles are empty this afternoon.

Last week, this cyber cafe was under scrutiny as, supposedly, it is the place from where the email purportedly issued by Indian Mujahideen (IM) threatening to assassinate BJP leader LK Advani during his 29 September visit to Shillong was sent.

As this correspondent sat in one of the terminals, the young man at the counter brought a new register and was asked to write details like name, address and phone number. Incidentally, the entries on the register begin on 25 September.

He said, " We were made to enter their personal details after the incident when the police swooped on our cyber café as

'Would you call the Naxalites 'Hindu terrorists'?'
Sayeedullah Nongrum, MLA and general secretary, Shillong Muslim Union tells TERESA REHMAN that the person accused of sending the threat by email could have done so at the behest of the BJP
Tell us about the Muslims of Shillong.
Photo: Rykinti Marwein
Most of the Muslims of Shillong originally hail from near Poonj area in Kashmir. Our forefathers come from Punjab, UP, Bihar, Bengal and some from erstwhile Shylet and Dhaka. From 1818, Muslims were here, mostly working with the Survey of India, as businessmen or as government servants. The Laban mosque was built in 1818. Prior to 1905, it was under the Muslim Mission which was later converted to Shillong Muslim Union ( SMU) to cater to the entire Eastern Bengal comprising of Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Dibrugarh, Jorhat right up to Coax Bazar, Comilla, Dhaka and Shylet. The first general secretary was Khan Bahadur Amjad Ali who also happens to be the first Khasi poet. I have been its general secretary since 1982.
How is this incident of the email threat being sent to LK Advani—allegedly by a Muslim man—going to affect the Muslim community here?
In India, Muslim population is blamed for any untoward incident. For instance, this young man is not a native of Shillong. He's here because his father happens to be a government servant posted here. We will never know how this came to be. He could have been instigated by the BJP to defame local Muslim community. He could have been framed. We have nothing to say at the moment. The law should be allowed to take its course. Whatever happened, it is for the investigating agencies to find out. We, the local Muslims, do not mingle with the outsiders. The Muslim population here is a very mixed one– we are Khasis, Assamese, Biharis, and from UP. I am a Khasi Muslim. It's for the first time in the history of Meghalaya that such a thing took place. We have always been living in harmony with the general population here.
What about allegations of cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh?
This is totally false. If such infiltration is there then we are casting aspersions on our own border sentinels.
What is the opening of the mosque for women going to mean?
As a liberal organisation, SMU has been existence since 1905. It has been building schools and colleges. In fact, the Umshyrpi College set up in 1994 is the first minority institution in the entire Northeast. Only 15 percent of the students is Muslim. I pushed for the opening of the mosque for women as I do not want to be cowed down by fundamentalist forces. Nowhere in the world are women forbidden to pray with men. Islam is very flexible and liberal. Even during Haj, women pray with men, only that a partition divides the two sexes.
Do you feel that Muslims are being targeted by being branded jehadis?
People misinterpret the meaning of jehad: it means a struggle for a good cause. We want our schools and colleges to groom a knowledgeable generation, not fundamentalists. I don't understand why we use the term 'Muslim terrorist'. Every Muslim is not a terrorist. Would you then call the Naxalites 'Hindu terrorists'?
So, this email threat incident is not much of a concern for your community.
Definitely not. It's just a stray incident. The veracity of the case is for the investigating agencies to prove. We have always been liberal, living peacefully. Recently, we joined our Christian brothers in a rally to protest atrocities against Christians in Orissa.
allegedly the email threat was sent from here." He had no clue, however, how the police could manage to decipher that it was from this café that the email was sent... But he said, "Earlier I used to simply give the users a slip with the timings. But now I am not going to take chances."

He said that the person who had allegedly sent the email threat used to frequent their café. "He was a regular here. He is not one of our lifetime members but he used to come here almost every day. The lifetime members have to pay only half of the usual surfing costs. However, the state police claims it has seized a register from the cyber café which lists the names of people using it.

Shillong witnessed unprecedented security cover with the National Security Guards taking over after the email threat reached a few newspaper offices. A young law student Mominul Haque of Laban area in the city was arrested and has reportedly "confessed to the police" to having written the e-mail which was sent to two local dailies on Wednesday night. Haque has been booked under Laban PS Case no: 90 (9) 08 under section 120 B/ 120 (1)/ 153 (B)/ 506. He has been booked under the IPC although there is the Meghalaya Preventive and Detention Act (MPDA) to deal with the militants.

The state police reportedly traced the email to the cyber café through its IP address. "We traced the email to a BSNL line. The BSNL has a cell in Bangalore to track such details. They traced the number to that particular cyber café in Shillong," S.B. Singh, IGP (special branch), Meghalaya police told TEHELKA. He informed that the accused has confessed before the police. Though he was produced before the magistrate, it is the prerogative of the accused to confess or choose not to.

Singh adds, "We have a foolproof case against him. The cyber café owner and the three other detainees present in the café identified the accused as the one sitting in that terminal in that particular time of the day. But the accused is quite a novice unlike the professional terrorists who hack into wifi systems like it was done in Mumbai recently. But we are yet to establish his links with any jehadi element. We are aware that this demands a sensitive approach"

However, the lawyer of the accused Noor Mohammad Mansuri said, "His bail plea was rejected though I had pleaded that there weren't enough grounds to hold him. My client has been remanded for 14 days. Any kind of confession in police custody might as well have been due to coercion. Now that Advani's rally has passed off peacefully, I will file a bail petition again. And if it's rejected, I will approach the sessions court. I know my client is innocent."

Mansuri adds that the email was sent in someone else's name. "The e-mail was issued in the name of IM's self-styled 'North East Field Commander' Ali Hussain Badr. It will be difficult to prove that it was sent by my client." He informed that his client's passport was seized along with religious CDs, religious books and newspaper cuttings on atrocities on minorities. "But that does not prove that he has links with the Jehadi groups. My client has just been framed," adds Mansuri.

He agreed that his client had used his passport and has been to Dubai, Bahrain and Bangladesh. Haque has his sister in Dubai and relatives in Bangladesh. That these have been trips have been made on personal reasons, Mansuri claims he can verify.

Interestingly, Mansuri points out that Haque's landlady, a local Khasi has been very supportive. She has barred the entry of media persons to her house, warning that trespassers will be prosecuted.

The local media, too, has been remarkably restrained in its reporting on the issue. Tilak Rai, executive member of the Shillong Press Club told TEHELKA, "We would not want to pass a judgement at this stage. The investigative agencies are doing their job. I think the media in Shillong has pursued the issue with the maturity and sensitivity it deserves."

Whether the email was genuine or just a hoax, it did manage to shake up the entire police department in the state... Is the young man being framed or is it just a case of an adventurous radical mind gone wrong. Does the young man really have links with jehadi outfits? These are questions the police will need time to find answers to.

Whatever may be the truth, the dream of this young man to become an army officer has certainly received a setback.
