[ALOCHONA] RE: [khabor.com] BR Army withdrawal from CTG. H. T.: What is next?

In 1997, during Sheikh Hasina's tenure, under a Peace Treaty the Insurgent 'Shanti Bahini', laid down the arms. Under the agreement 35 makeshift army camps at different areas of the Hills would be closed but over 300 Military Bases would remain in the Hills. Hizbulla Wing of the BNP never tells the Bangladeshi people this vital fact. Is any sensible person in Bangladesh surprised by the Machiavellian politics of BNP? The mendacity, the audacity, the duplicity and sheer hypocrisy with which BNP does politics in Bangladesh---puts even Mr.Machevelli to shame! The twenty five year old insurgency in the South Western Hill Tracts came to an end with 1997 Peace Treaty with the Insurgents. So much blood was shed unnecessarily in the last 25 years. The Chakma's are not Bengalis. They are a distinct and different ethnic group with their own language and religion. What's wrong in acknowledging this reality? They are not asking for separate homeland. They are only demanding more power to rule their own affairs. Is this a national security issue? The Pakistani Military Junta can take a three credit hour class at the 'Sheikh Hasina school of Advanced Military and Diplomatic studies'. Lesson for the Pakis? They can show magnanimity and in a symbolic gesture withdraw their much despised military from the soil of Baluchistan. At least, this will be a giant step towards a peace treaty in the future. With a brilliant strategic move, Sheikh Hasina, saved Bangladesh from further Indian interference in this tribal region. Don't forget—in 1971, our insurgents took shelter in India. Today, the Insurgents from the Hill Tracts are taking shelter in India. I have been warning the Hizbulla faction of BNP and Jammat about the devastating consequences of their Anti-India posturing and its associated dire long term consequences for Bangladesh. I salute the courage and the indefagibility of the brilliant Sheikh Hasina for correcting the historical wrong done by the father of the nation—Bongobondhoo Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

[ALOCHONA] Re: BDR Probe body misses 3rd deadline

Dear Alochoks

My understanding is that at least another 3 BDR jawans have died since this article on 4/8/09.

Its simply appalling and ghastly that this is going on.

While we can all sing songs about Bongobondhu morning, noon and night injustice continues to flourish effortlessly in our land.

[ALOCHONA] Re: Govt tenders go online in 2 months: Muhith

Dear Alochoks

I once heard our current Finance Minister speak passionately and convincingly about the critical importance of the implementation of E-Government. This effort with on line tendering would be part of such an e-governance.

Of course a digital Bangladesh is meaningless without a digitised government. We need more e-governance desperately.

I hope this step by the Finance Ministry is only the first of many such initiatives by all the Ministries.

[ALOCHONA] Rebellion benefited foreign foes: BDR chief

Rebellion benefited foreign foes: BDR chief
Staff Correspondent

Courtesy New Age 17/8/09

The February rebellion at Dhaka headquarters of the border force has benefited the foreign enemies only, the chief of the mutiny-battered Bangladesh Rifles said Monday, without naming any country.
‘Bangladesh is not enemy-free in the international arena, it has foes abroad…The enemies were benefited from the February 25-26 rebellion,’ Major General Mainul Islam told the soldiers of the para-military force at their first Durbar in six months since the bloody rebellion.
He pointed out the force suffered the worst ever loss in its history as the mutiny killed 57 officers leaving the country’s over 4,000 kilometres border with India and Myanmar unsafe for the time being.
The BDR chief referred to the 1971 war of independence.
‘Pakistan occupational forces attacked us at a time when people of the country were thinking of liberation with majority votes …Therefore, it is evident that there are still many enemies active against us,’ he said.
Asked, he, however, did not name any country as enemy of Bangladesh.
The 33-hour rebellion that took place during a similar Durbar, a session where the director general of the force listens to the soldiers, on February 25 had left as many as 74 people, including 57 army officers, killed and many others injured.
Began with recitation from holy Quran, the Durbar was attended by nearly 2,500 soldiers, many of whom had witnessed the February 25 carnage, and commanders from across the country at the Durbar Hall inside the Pilkhana headquarters of the force.
The get-together began at 10:00am amid heightened security measures engaging more than 2,500 members from the army, navy, air force and police.
During his deliberation, the director general made 17 queries to the soldiers to know about their present situation and past activities, especially related to the mutiny. All but one question on whether they believe that they are performing their duty properly were answered.
‘It is a shame that you cannot perform your duty because of mutiny. It is unfortunate that the soldiers are not cleaning their weapons, which are their strength,’ said the chief, frustrated to see that thousands of firearms given to border guards by the government to protect the country’s frontiers were being rusted due to lack of maintenance.
‘How long do you want it to be continued? We all are in uncertainty because of wrongdoing of a handful of people,’ Mainul said referring to involvement of a section of the soldiers in the mutiny, which he termed as a trauma in the history of the paramilitary force.
He said that the carnage had taken place only because of BDR members’ lack of confidence.
‘The rebellion could not have taken place had you left the durbar hall on that day. It all happened because you lack confidence. Not all the soldiers were involved in the mutiny, many of you were forced to join it, many of you have fled,’ he added.
Mentioning the ongoing investigation into the February carnage and the upcoming trial, the BDR chief regretted that many BDR members were still not providing information of the incidents.
‘To ensure fair trial, you have to provide information. It is a serious crime and the criminals must be brought to justice,’ he said.
‘Time has not run out yet, take me with you, we will ensure fair trial together.’
He lauded the role of members of the force outside Dhaka saying that they protected the borders maintaining the chain of command at different border outposts. ‘The flame of the rebellion did not touch them on that day and they are still doing their best to protect the border.’
