[mukto-mona] Re: Hindu-Muslim unity: a historical speech by a leading Deobandi maulvi

Moderator's note: We welcome contentious posts and members responses to them as long as the posts do not preach or become obnoxious in any way. As a progressive front, we believe in allowing religionists to post and in refuting their arguments in a process of dialogue. Members are welcome to refute ot argue any point civilly on the forums. And, for anyone who has a problem like this poster does, we would like to inform you that Mukto Mona does not share all of the views that apepar here. These are the views of individual posters as are the responses to them.

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48355

Dear Muktomona Editors,

The title of the above mentioned posting is quite misleading. The
deobandi maulvi's speech does not seek hidu-muslim unity. Rather he
was enticing the islamists with despicable religious zeal that, once
again, shows islamists can not accomodate diversity.

As an example listen to the audacity of this man -

"History is replete with thousands of instances that tell us that
even at the height of their power and glory, the Muslims protected
the life and property of the non-Muslims with whom they had entered
into agreements, and for that they even sacrificed their very lives."

Is this a civilised way to talk about unity! It is a threat. Last
thing anybody would want is to be protected by Islamists. What good
is that? Devoid of freedom, shackeled by a mediocre god!

I am really dismayed by the standard of this above mentioned posting!
This kind of regular, unabated, silly postings tend to neutralize the
credibiity of mukto-mona as a progressive front. Islamists are
irreparable. Let us abandon them.

[ALOCHONA] MINHAZ, THE YOUNGER BROTHER of GEN. MOINUDDIN is OUT of REACH of DUDOK

It is well known by everybody that DGDP is one of the most corrupt
government organization like Customs, LGED etc. and 99% defense officer
working at DGDP are making illegal money for years with the help of
some dishonest suppliers. Minhaz, the younger brother of Gen. Moinuddin
is such a supplier of DGDP is making illegal money for long with the
assistance of his friend Wing Cmdr. Hannan there. This air force
officer itself made more than few crore taka and purchased land here
and there in Dhaka city and Savar, let alone Minhaz who made few
hundred crore taka already. As being younger brother of Gen. Moinuddin,
Minhaz can't be enlisted by DuDok.

DuDok is such an organization which is working only against politicians
and businessmen but government officers, defense officers and their
relatives are out of their sight for a strange reason! Do you have any
idea about the reason?

[ALOCHONA] Re: How to Serve "Sunita Paul" to Farida Majid

How to make your own sunita paul- Comments

By Firoz Alam

Ms Farida Majid wrote:

Is it a bird? Is it a Hindoo bird from Kolkata or a new snoop from RAW? Sunita Paul is actually a savory dish, a concoction.

My response: Does it matter whether Ms. Sunita Paul's identity should be a question here? I think that labeling someone of whom you may disagree with to "Hindoo bird" is inconsistent with the value of progressive, leftist and/or secular ideals. Maybe, just maybe, only those who cling to secular-religion are just fit to label Ms. Sunita Paul as such. Someone must be so drank of a mixture of long island ice tea sort to smell of RAW agent in Sunita Paul's article. Whether Ms Sunita Paul's article is savory dish or not, Ms Farida Majid indeed volunteered to taste Ms Sunita Paul's latest concoction without providing any such link or proof of such a mixture rather came up with her own concoction and if i may add, an un-savory one.

Ms Farida Majid:

Try the following recipe in the comfort of your own kitchen to create your own “Sunita Paul, an expert in South Asian affairs.”

Response: Voila, Let me try as per her suggestion bon-appetite recipe to create my own Ms Farida Majid, an expert in South Asian Affairs!

Ms Farida Majid:

1. Pick some choice upo-sompadokiyo from Jai Jai Din, Naya Diganta, Inquilab, Sangram, Dinkal, etc. Good morsels are also there for the picking from various press conferences of Jamaat and the public statements of the learned Ulema.

Response: Shafiq Rahman's Jai Jai Din's upo-sompadokiya is Ms farida Majid's new bon-appetite recipe is indeed speaks volume of her own standing on south Asian affairs. In my view, bigots are those who utterly intolerant of differing creed, belief or opinion and yes such bigotry must be dealt with. why don't we learn to agree to disagree Ms Farida Majit? I just don't get it why does she hide behind the so-called progressive-leftist-secular curtain. What's wrong being informed by the media of all the members of the society?

Ms Farida Majid:

2. Rinse well to rid of any grain of truth. Left unnoticed, these grains may come between teeth and make chewing uncomfortable.

Response: Well what is the truth i mean absolute truth Ms Farida Majid? The truth is that this is not primarily about Sunita Paul's criticism of Dr..Yunus rather hedge against of those elements of our society with whom you may disagree as she puts it come between of her teeth and make her uncomfortable. What a twist! Diversity is like a rainbow and in rainbow, everything is beautiful. When those grains make chewing uncomfortable just think of how KKK-grains, Mormon-grains, panther-grains, red-neck-grains etc are coexisting like a rainbow and proudly the media conveying their messages to their audience as they should in my opinion. And in doing that no one is uncomfortable unless one is a bigot!

Ms Farida Majid:

3. Add spice making sure the mixture turns quite holud as in yellow journalism.

Response: I don't know about others holud journalism, but I am always suspect of people who have to advertise their truthfulness!

Ms Farida Majid:

4. In a large pot over high flame of propaganda pour plenty of Moududibadi religion-flavored grease. The aim is to ensure everything well-coated by this grease. When the grease is smoking in high heat throw in your ‘yellow’ mixture in the pot.

Response: In my view bigotry has no place in modern politics anywhere in the world unless you are a warmonger and want to take advantage of others resources! There are so many flavored grease available in the propaganda market and Ms Farida Majid has every right to choose any grease suits her need and if she wants to mix her "yellow bon-appetite" recipe while in cold or in high heat its up to her to decide whether she wants to suck it lick it or swallow it before "coalition of willing scavengers" occupy her grease in the pot! I don't care!

Ms Farida Majid:

5. Stir in dollops of the following if you fear the upo-sampadokiyo's are somewhat lacking in them:

Response: Let me stir the following symbolic terms without fear and hope her ignorance will evolve as Darwin's theory of monkey to human did! And if Monkey does not evolve to human don't blame me cause its not my theory. One may wonder, Monkey may have evolved from a pig cause pig's DNA/blood is very close to "human animal's"! whatever the case, let me put some lipsticks on my pig's lips so as to evolve as an south-Asian expert on lipstick affairs!

Ms Farida Majid:

a) anti-India slurs

Response: Ms Farida Majid's bigotry and ignorance continue to astonish me. On one hand she labels someone with "Hindoo bird" who she disagrees with and on the other hand she finds Ms Sunita Paul a new snoop from RAW and deceiving herself into thinking not being exposed of her own anti-India slurs.. What an unacknowledged hypocrisy! Lipstick color code: dark-brown!

b) anti-BAKSAL , which should include anti-AL slurs

Response: Can you please explain Ms Farida Majid as to how baksalism and freedom goes hand in hand while put aside your pro-BAL crude sentiments? Why Chalabi and his gangs along with coalition of willing had to invent Bangladeshi freedom" to kill millions of her own people to achieve an abstract term such as freedom while freedom is so elusive? i mean Majibur Rahman and his gangs? Does chalabi give us any insights as to how we should interpret " Iraqi freedom" in Bangladeshi context? Why not Ms Farida Majid? Does baatism in Iraq and baksalim in bangladesh denotes any meaning to you? Lipstick color code: baksali brown!

c) anti-leftist, ant-secularist and ant- progressive rantings

Response: How firm a Left-secular-progressive foundation when Ms Farida Majid fail to argue against Sunita Paul's article instead of labeling her as a new snoop RAW agent or Hindo bird? Have such abstract philosophical terms anything to gain by perpetuating and consecrating the ambiguity? I guess the heart is really deceitful above all thing and beyond cure! Lipstick color code: white-wanna-be white means off base or off white!

d) the word “Maya kanna” to describe sentiments FOR those killed and raped in 1971 muktijuddho

Response: Are you suggesting as a supporter of Obama you may be displaying your sentiments as Maya kanna and Supporter of Chalabi showing solidarity with Iraqi people? How do you describe Mujib and his gang with then allied force of India declare war against our people in the name of Bangladeshi freedom as was done in Iraq by "coalition of willing" as Iraqi freedom? How did farther of greater India Gandhi ji achieved freedom from British? Oh non-violence should be applied in Iraq but force is the only course of action should be applied in Bangladesh and all should support it otherwise you are a "rajakar"? shredder's cat's dead and alive dual state is may be possible in the movie at the same time since photons were discovered long time ago but wonder who would explain away pro-war and inti-war dual state in Ms Farida Majid's? Lipstick color code: crocodile's tears color. do you know how does it feel? mayakanna!

e) denial of the War of Liberation, and lastly

Response: War of liberation, huh? Her mind seemed wholly taken up with reminiscences of past and living with Ms Farida Majid's rage of the past, she sees nothing strange about the outrage that is our present reality in Iraq and ghettoize entire Muslim world in the name of freedom of ignorance and as well as we have a semi-baksal government backed by foreigner tyrannical force as we speak . Are you the war-mongering offspring of Sheik Mujib or anti-war offspring of Obama? How is possible living with such a dual state of mind Ms Farida Majid? Which horn of your dilemma I choose, I ask you to let me hear what the other horn may be? lipstick color code: Red out of RGB hence inorganic green in blues and jazz a times too!

f) mocking the demand for trial of the War Criminals of 1971.

Response: Anyone who does not march lock-step to Ms Farida's neolithic beliefs might seems to her as if they are mocking the demand for the trial of the War Criminals of 1971. Why does this war crime issue get so much talking memo only during election season? To me very frankly it is silly season in politics indeed. How about 47000 freedom fighters were killed by Baksalist goons? Who should we demand for their trial Ms. Farida Majid? How about its time for reconcilition and redemption? In my view, Politicising the matter won't take us anywhere rather it will divide us even more and foreginer would take advantage on us as always have if we continue to live divided. Lipstick color code: Mocking bird.

Ms Farida Majid:

6. For finishing touch dot the surface with drops of crocodile tears for the debt-ridden destitute of Bangladesh, a country “on the verge of extinction.”

Response: What do you mean by "on the verge of extinction"? What a secular-left-progressive prophecy! I hope and pray that A lie should not get halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. Bangladesh is a sovereign nation recognized by the UN and this is politically the only valid reason to supports its "existence" not on the verge of extinction unless she extincts by natural selection. And if she does extinct then Ms Farida Majid would not have to surface with drop of crocodile tears for the debt-ridden destitue of Bangladeshi anymore. Or If extinction(dissolve) does occur by joining with united states of SARC(i.e EU model) or united state of south-asia then be it and sooner is better. Please take your fear-mongering secular-sermon to the mount or join in with Bush! We have seen it all through Jeremiah Wright's prism! Lipstick color: hullod may equal to cure of inflamation but who will cure hullod!

Ms Farida Majid:

7.Serve while hot. Choose a serving platter of a good brand of crockery such as ‘dahuk’, notunbangladesh, or sonarbangladesh to serve the dish. The last one is highly recommended since it is the e-mail domain of Mr. S. A. Hannan. There is also a new web magazine called Sonar Bangla that is commendable. For further help with the preparation and serving of the dish consult professionals like MBI Munshi, Isha Khan and others in this group who would gladly oblige.

Response: I'll do anything within the reason to oblige and the poor and rich people of Bangladesh need to wake up and realize they have been duped into perpetuating a war of liberation gossip and war crime issue that only serves to glorify their hawkish leaders during their election season! Let me end my post by quoting Rabindranath Tagore's poem:

In front lies the Ocean of Peace.

Into that ocean of peace, my friends, let us launch our boats.

How to Serve "Sunita Paul" to Farida Majid

By Abid Bahar, Canada

Just when summer is fast approaching after a long winter and we are looking forward to barbecue in the outdoors, arrived a recipe from Farida Majid called "how to cook your own sunita paul." http://newsfrombangladesh.net/view.php?hidRecord=198867 At first I was happy to see the label but when I checked the details, I saw it is not a recipe but is already a cooked dish. We will see this in the article by Sunita Paul herself in her "True story of Grameen Bank and Yunus." Link:"http://globalpolitician.com/24657-yunus-bangladesh

Sunita Paul says, in her "True story of Grameen Bank and Yunus" the following:

"I had no taste of writing on this bad guy even two days back. But, when I listened to a report in Voice of America on May 1, had to set my fingers on computer key board to investigate and write about the unknown stories of Mohammed Yunus."

"Yunus continues to claim himself as a 'Professor'. But, according to several academics in Bangladesh, this man never taught in any of the college or universities in Bangladesh. Who gave him this title remains a mystery unfold."

"True investigative journalists in the world, especially with influential Medias like Newsweek, TIME, Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Guardian, Economist, Financial Times, Far Eastern Economic Review, Herald Tribune, SUN, Mirror, Berliner Zeitung, CNN, Fox, CNBC, BBC, VOA, Al Jazeera or even Indian newspapers like Hindustan Times, The Statesman, Times of India etc., need to investigate the true stories of Muhammed Yunus and expose his nasty face to the international community.

A master swindler like Yunus should not be anymore allowed to continue his fraudulent activities under the garb of social worker. But, anyone, willing to know the real stories of Yunus or Grameen Bank or this conglomerate should note that any investigation in this regard should go without notifying the Grameen bosses in Dhaka. Because, once they will sense such investigations, they will instruct their agents in the country to shut the mouths of poor people

under threats."

For Farida Majid's information, Sunita Paul is an already cooked smelly dish and no one can cook his or her Sunita Patel for the following reasons:

Firstly, Sunita says, Professor Yonus was never a "Professor." But for her information, professor Yonus was indeed a professor. He began his teaching career at the University of Chittagong immediately after the independence of Bangladesh. I personally saw him teaching in classes on the fourth floor of the faculty building in Chittagong University. I know let's say close to 20 of his direct students. To authenticate this fact, I will distribute this article to his former students and Mrs. Farida Majid can ask for witness from the said professor's students. Today, Dr. Yonus's students are spread around the globe.

Secondly, Sunita Paul didn't mention which segment of the Voice of America program she listed to about Professor Yonus.

In addition, in no way one can judge Professor Yonus as a "bad guy;" as Sunita Patel unfortunately termed him in her write-up. He could be one in the eyes of a xenophobic, anti Bangladeshi Indian element because he is promoting the image of Bangladesh in abroad.

Thirdly, Farida Majid is recommending a crook and spicy so-called "South Asian" scholar dish, Sunita Paul as a recipe.

But again Mrs. Sunita Paul further says, "A master swindler like Yunus should not be anymore allowed to continue his fraudulent activities under the garb of social worker. But, anyone, willing to know the real stories of Yunus or Grameen Bank or this conglomerate should note that any investigation in this regard should go without notifying the Grameen bosses in Dhaka. Because, once they will sense such investigations, they will instruct their agents in the country to shut the mouths of poor people under threats."

To serve a 'Sunita Paul' dish to the near blind Farida Majid, I want her to know that one can not use the same recipe to cook both beef and vegetable. "Sunita Paul" is a good recipe for an anti-Bangladeshi Indian but not for the well-wishers of Bangladesh. In the past I tried Farida Majid's works and found good flavours. If Farida Majid has not turned completely blind yet, in future and before she recommends the "Sunita Paul" recipe to others, or to taste it for herself, she should use her high powered Chosma (eye glasses) to see what is cooking of Sunita Paull!!!

Finally, Mrs. Majid! Bon apatite of "sunita Paul"!

Please try "didi" Sunita Paul with your 'chosma' Please!

By the way, Majid's recommended the made in India, so-called "progressive" recipe of "Sunita Paul" but seen above Sunita Paul is a liar; she is an abomination of the south Asian community, a recipe for food poisoning among Bangladeshis. But if Majid has something else with a recipe called the future of a modern Bangladesh, with some spicy soup on the side, I along with the readers will wait for her to serve us.

[mukto-mona] RE: Fw: article on inheritance in islam and women by Kaniz Fatima p

I apologize if I sounded harsh - I didn't want to offend anyone. I only felt frustrated when I saw simple and immensely important points are missed. That takes
us to an unreal world and we pay heavily for that.

If we put on table all the Quranic inheritance-injunctions and their corollaries we see that it perfectly guards women from all sides. But the moment one go to
apply the set-up today, even theoretically, we see a sinking Titanic. And there is a real reason for that.

The Quranic inheritance-injunctions and their corollaries were created on the context of a particular tribal socio-economic set-up. Today we differ form it on
two counts - Tribal vs Modern family structure and length of time passed that changed everything except values. There are many elements that worked then
but fail now. That is normal. Tribes use to protect its members from all sides for its existence and strength. Today's family-structure cannot afford that.
Today the failing factors are amount of Mehr, protection of women by relatives, numerous husbands failing to support family without financial support from
wives - the breakdown of joint-family, more and more engagement of women in education and profession  - the list is long.

Supporters of Sharia law claim that contextual elements of the Quran cannot be applied today (like "Jizyia", "Slavery" or "Kill them in pairs"... etc). Strange that
whenever it comes to women-rights they stick to contextual verses.  Our rising Islamic scholars must take this point in their study to do better - because
no amount of sweet words can save a failing math.

Lastly, there is no middleman between us and God. Also, our women are no less Muslim than anyone, - no mater who he is. It is not men but Muslim
women themselves who and only who have the right to decide their right in Islam. There must be a national referendum on it. Muslim men played god on women
in the name of Islam for too long and the result is disastrous. Like in India our women must create a Women Islamic Board to save their rights from the claws of
unjust laws hiding behind sweet words.

      Salam to all.

      Hasan Mahmud.

Subject: [Shetubondhon] RE: [khabor.com] Fw: article on inheritance in islam and women by Kaniz Fatima published in New Nat

I am sorry if this is "very exhaustive and thoughtful article on  financial position of women in Islam" then we have a long way to go.

I wonder in which unreal world the writer lives in. This is a folk-story at best, void of touch with present reality. The math shown perfectly fits a tribal society of far past, not the reality around today. What the Quran addresses and describes as prevalent socio-economic-familial condition is taken as eternal socio-familial structure. What can be more self-defeating than this? Is it how one "defends Islam" at the cost of our women?

There are many misleading info too, about Mehr and maintenance and more  - sad that the article is in pdf - so I can't copy-paste to refute them.

[ALOCHONA] Jamaat's New Ameer is a Convicted War Criminal - Was Sentenced to Life in Prison

Jamaat's new ameer is a convicted war criminal and was sentenced to life in prison in 1972.

The question is why is he outside the prison?  Who pardoned him and when?  The article in the following link doesn't say it.  Does anybody know when this hardcore enemy of Bangladesh got out of the prison? Shall we thank Dictator Zia for that?

[mukto-mona] One Mr. Quraishi now promoting MBI Munshi's magnum opus in the Net!

Dear Mr. Quraishi:

I don't know how long and to what extent you know Mr. Munshi.  AS far as I know he grew up in England but he lived in Dhaka for the last few years.  Through his writings in NFB (I am one of the members of the board of editors) and his postings in Mukto-mona (a forum for South Asian Secularists) I can attest to the fact that he is an Indo-phobic par excellence! Therefore, one would be hard pressed to find objectivity in his writings.

For example, when Islamists were blasting their homemade crude bombs allober Bangladesh during 1999 through 2006, Mr. Munshi confidently opined that those bombings were the handiworks of India's RAW.  We vigorously protested to his infantile assertions; finally we learned that the spate of bombings was done by none other than the Islamists of Bangladesh.  Mr. Munshi used to support the political party BNP while Mrs. Zia's party was in power during 2001 through 2006.  The BNP patronized the Islamists quite openly.  When we pointed this out to Mr. Munshi, he chose to remain reticent.

Also, for your information, Mr. Munshi for whatever reason never did like the Awami League - the party that helped emancipate Bangladesh from the clutch of Pakistani military in 1971.  Maybe, Mr. Munshi did not like the independence of Bangladesh.  Many Bangladeshis who held this view found it convenient to blame India for all the ills that confront our unfortunate motherland.

In summary, Mr. Munshi's mindset was exposed by fellow Bangladeshis.  He believes in conspiracy theory whenever something extraordinary happens in South Asia.  Please Google MBI Munshi and you will learn pronto the mindset of this man who you are promoting in the Net. Caveat Emptor.  That is all I could say!

Indian machinations?

Wednesday May 21 2008 14:47:35 PM BDT

By Ahmed Quraishi

A London-based Bangladeshi author, M B I Munshi, is preparing to release in August a revised version of a book, The Indian Doctrine, which is expected to shed new light on what happened in Pakistan in 2007. Simply said, it was an impressive destabilization campaign, combining suicide bombings with threats of taking out Pakistani nukes and open insinuations in op-ed editorials in major US dailies about the breakup of the Pakistani homeland.

A small incident in Karachi in September 2007 gave Pakistani policy strategists a rare glimpse into the larger game plan in the region at the time. The incident fitted a pattern and provided clues to the unfortunate role played by some actors in India, apart from the sitting government there, in compounding Pakistan's problems on our western borders. A car raced by a police check post in the city's busy downtown, stopped close enough for the policemen to see it but far enough to ensure escape. Two men were inside. One of them pulled down the window, threw out some jackets on the street and then screeched away. The unknown car had just dropped a few 'suicide vests' ready for use, with markings that indicated US origin. "It was a lousy act linked to the Indian intelligence services trying to create an impression that CIA was sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan," Mr Munshi's book quotes a Pakistani source as explaining. "Neither the CIA nor the actual suicide bombers are in the business of dropping US marked suicide vests on roadsides from moving cars in front of the police."

Later that month, Washington sent a rare message to New Delhi that basically said, 'Please don't make things difficult for us. Try to get out of this Pakistan obsession. You are too important to limit yourself in this way.' According to a transcript released by the Pentagon, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Defence, James Clad, told a visiting group of retired Indian generals and diplomats that the US had "de-hyphenated its relations with India from its relations with Pakistan. New Delhi should do the same".

The US official was essentially telling the Indians they should not feel threatened by the Pak-American cooperation in Afghanistan for the simple reason that it was not going to affect Indian interests. The Indians, Clad implied, should desist from trying to undermine Pak-US ties based on that false notion. But Clad's advice fell on deaf ears because, by 2007, India was in the advanced stages of executing an ambitious intelligence operation suspected of having substantially contributed to the multiple and unprecedented security challenges that Pakistan faced in its western regions in the period between 2004 and early 2008.

In a special chapter titled, The Peace Charade: How 9/11 Helped India Penetrate Pakistan, Mr Munshi's book shows how a document prepared by two Indian security analysts in the year 2000, recommending to the Indian government a creative approach to expand Indian intelligence operations in Pakistan, inspired an ambitious Pakistan-specific plan after 9/11, exploiting the unprecedented uncertainty on the ground in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region.

The ultimate goal of this massive operation was "to help [India] in the foreign policy objective of breaking the monopoly of the ISI and army over Pakistan," according to the Indian document, aptly titled, 'India's Experience and Need for Action Against Pakistan,' authored by Dr. Bhashyam Kasturi and Pankaj Mehra. "The aim is," the authors wrote, "to break the stranglehold of the intelligence agencies, the bureaucracy and the military in Pakistan." We Pakistanis need to learn how our domestic politics should be managed unless we want to lose everything.

[mukto-mona] Fitna Remade, One year anniversary social, Islam and political Islam conference, urgent actions and how you can help

Hello

Here is an update for you on some important matters and upcoming events:

On Fitna Remade

Reza Moradi, a member of CEMBs Executive Committee, has just produced Fitna Remade in response to Geert Wilders film, Fitna. You can see Rezas remake here. To see commentaries and Fariborz Pooya's interview with Maryam Namazie and Bahram Soroush on the original movie on Iranian Secular Society TV, click here. You can read the transcript of the programme here.

Events - Hold these dates

One year anniversary celebration: We are asking members and supporters to join CEMB executive committee members for drinks to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the establishment of the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain and to meet other like-minded people in central London on 5th July 2008 from 2pm onwards. For more details, please RSVP.

International Conference entitled Challenging Islam and Political Islam, October 10, 2008 at Conway Hall, London: The CEMB is busy organising an international conference on 10 October - the International Day against the Death Penalty entitled Challenging Islam and political Islam to focus on several key questions, namely the problem with Sharia law, including for women's status; freedom of expression and the need for criticism of religion; universal rights; as well as the separation of religion and the state. Keep this date free in your diaries from now.

Urgent need for help

Support and safe houses: We are looking for emergency and temporary safe homes for people who want to leave Islam but fear that they will be killed by their families. This will enable them to be safe until we can help them access available resources and a shelter. If you are able to help, please contact us.

Legal advice: The Charities Commission has said the CEMB cannot apply for charity status because we defend secularism! Perhaps that explains why so many Islamic organisations and religious institutions have charity status. We are nonetheless going to file for charity status and are looking for someone with legal expertise to assist. If you can help us, please contact us as soon as possible.

Ex-Muslim case histories: As you know, there isnt a lot of information out there about the case histories of those who have renounced religion and in particular Islam. We are looking to record these in various ways. If you might be interested in giving us your story, email, write or call us so we can set up a time to talk or meet.

Important recent media coverage and speeches

To see a Times article on Maryam Namazie entitled: Its time to take a stand against Islam and Sharia, Maryam Namazie, head of the Council of Ex-Muslims in Britain, says that rights are for individuals, not religions or beliefs, click here.

To see Maryams speech commemorating 17 year old Dua who was stoned to death last year in Iraqi Kurdistan, click here. To read the speech, click here. To see Maryams response at the conference commemorating Du'a on whether men are to blame for women's rights violations, exaggerating the extent of Islam's role, is criticism of Islam being anti-Muslim, and on various interpretations of Islam, click here.

To hear a part English, part Swedish 25 minute interview with Maryam on Radio P4 Boras on Islam and political Islam, Click here.

Upcoming speaking engagements

Maryam Namazie will be speaking at the alternative Islam conference in Koln, Germany on May 31 at 11am and again at 1230pm on a panel with other heads of Ex-Muslim Councils. Her 11am speech is entitled Islam is significant because of political Islam'. [External Link]

Maryam Namazie will be speaking at a plenary session on Political Islam and Freedom of Conscience and Expression at the World Humanist Congress, June 6, 2008, Washington, DC, USA. [External Link]

Other information:

A CEMB supporter, Richard Collins, has set up a facebook page called 1,000,000 activists for Maryam Namazie. To see or join it, click here.

Maryam Namazies blog has been rated one of the top hundred hottest atheist blogs here.

How you can help us do more:

You can help us do more to break the taboo that comes with renouncing Islam and to push back religions adverse role in society at large by:

* Donating to our organisation. We need funds to cover everything from a campaign against the Sharia courts in Britain, a comprehensive resource centre about Islam, political Islam and ex-Muslims, a support system for ex-Muslims and Ex-Muslim TV programmes that can be broadcast across Europe and the Middle East.  A huge thanks to everyone who has generously donated to our organisation. We need a lot more funds though if we are going to move from a volunteer run organisation to a more established one. No amount is too small or for that matter too big!

* Adding your name and statement to our list of members or supporters.

* Volunteering your time and expertise. We particularly need help in charity law, conference organising, researching, writing and broadcasting.

* Telling others about us by forwarding recent media coverage or our press releases to everyone you know...

We look forward to hearing from you.

Warmest regards,

CEMB Executive Committee

Asad Abbas (Secretary), Reyhan Hussein, Jalil Jalili, Rony Miah, Reza Moradi, Maryam Namazie (Chair), Bahram Soroush and Zia Zaffar (Treasurer).

RE: [mukto-mona] An article on bengali muslims

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/48341

Dear Mr.Mukherjee,

Thank you, as long as religion is used for personal enlightenments it works very well. But the moment we try to propagate religion it becomes propaganda and propaganda is always beset with personal agenda, lies and distortions. A philosophical life does not depend on ones religious views. A life with serenity is a personal perception which can be attained by freedom from fear and fables. Gibran said, a truly religious person does not embrace any religion. Many people may not grasp the importance of this saying but it translates the real meaning of religion. In the Indian philosophical and historical perspective religion was always way to live life not a regimentation. This universal truth was contaminated by some vested quarters thereby making faith a fearsome subject. Now religion is used to create division, hatred and discord. This scenario can't be an eternal factor. Mankind will overcome this mean barrier and will be able to rediscover the real religion of man as Tagore did.

Regards
Akbar Hussain

[mukto-mona] Missing Girls in India...

Sex ratios in India are now almost as bad as China, if not worse (China has the longest lasting and most severe girl shortage of any contemporary population). This demographic disaster will eventually lead to millions of men who cannot find mates...and we will have to wait and see what THAT leads to...

Introduction

Data from the census of 2001 suggests that there are only 933 women for every1000 men in India [1]. In 1992 Amartya Sen calculated that 37 million women were 'missing' in India [2]. The UN in 2001 estimated that there were 44 million missing women in India [3]. Societal bias favoring males is responsible for the situation [4]. This bias manifests as neglect of girls and women resulting in their early death [5], [6], [7], female infanticide [8], [9] and more recently, antenatal sex determination and female feticide [10]. In India, ultra sound machines that permit non-invasive antenatal sex determination first became available in select centers in the late 1970s and became more widespread in the 1980s [11], [12]. Soon thereafter abortion of female fetuses were reported from many major cities of India [13], [14]. Several reports suggest that sex selective abortion became more common in the 1990s [15], [16]. Amartya Sen believes that the pattern of gender inequality shifted from 'mortality inequality' to what he calls 'natality inequality' due to female feticide after the facility for antenatal sex determination became available [11], [17]. Others suggest that parents are not substituting prenatal for post-natal discrimination against girls but combining the two strategies [18]. The relative contribution of these modes of discrimination, to the unbalanced sex ratio in India, is still unresolved [19].
The age specific sex ratio is used to determine the age at which women go 'missing'. However infanticides, in the first few days, are often reported as still-births [19] or not reported at all within the incomplete birth registration system [9]. It is therefore difficult to assess the number of girl children 'missing' from the census data on account of sex selective abortion and the number lost due to early infanticide. Data on sex ratio at birth in hospital records can be crucial to estimate the influence of female feticide on the sex ratio as this is not affected by other factors like infanticide and neglect of girl children. This study was done to look at secular trends in the sex ratio at birth of babies born in a hospital over the last 110 years. We hypothesized that if female feticide is a factor affecting the sex ratio, there would be a fall in the newborn female to male sex ratio after the technology for antenatal sex determination became widespread in the1980s....
