[mukto-mona] The Tatas

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49662

Mr Adhiraj Bose has the right to defend the Tatas but it is depressing to note that his posting seems inspired, a PR-style defence.

Tisco, TFIR etc are milestones, but there are black sides too.
Shall we forget Kalinganagar brutality? Let me share with you what we heard from an eminent economist, Prof Amit Bhaduri. He found several people with lower limbs amputated among the protesters from the local farming community. He asked them why. Pat came the reply. Mines were around the site so that agitators couldn't enter. But people didn't know. Over a dozen of them innocently walked in and lost their limbs. That's the bonhomie between the Tatas and BJD-BSP coalition government in Orissa. Ratan Tata or anyone of Tata empire behaved like silent spectators.

During the diamond jubilee of Tisco, the Tatas claimed that there were no strikes at Jamshedpur Steel Plant and our ace journalists like R N Sinha, Nantoo Banerjee and Sunil Mukhopadhyay ( a former CPI member who worked at the USSR consulate office for nearly two decades) parroted the claim. Satyanarayan Singh, the Naxalite leader, was among the second-line leaders of AITUC-led strike there in the early 1950s and in the colonial period, Hazara Singh was deliberately run over in front of Tisco gate while on a sit-in strike. All this is documented.

About technological pride. In the mid-1990s, the Tisco officials stated that the steel plant would replace dolomite with olivine for technological upgradation. It was frontpaged in Economic Times, filed by a pliant reporter.

I read Chemistry last in 1958, thst too at the undergraduate level. I found that dolomite is double carbonate of calcium and magnesium in 50:50 ratio, used for reduction of iron ore while olivine is a mineral silicate of calcium and magnesium used for slag-preparation. I sent a questionnaire, There was no straight answer.
At a press conference, in presence of senior journalists, I asked the same question, The then Tisco managing director Dr J J Irani and Dr T K Mukherjee, a senior GM - both pampered by journos as Ph.Ds in Metallurgy from Sheffield ( as if Seffild is the Mecca of meteorology) evaded the question and Dr Irani accused me of maligning the Tatas. No journalist lodged even a token protest.

After sometime, the idea was dropped.

So everything is not bright with the Tatas. Ratan Tata kept mum when Tapasi Malik, daughter of a landless agricultural labourer, was gang-raped and killed. Had Russi Mody been there, he might have behaved differently, I think, without having any illusion about him. He was too a crony of J R D Tata.

Finally, let's have a look at a news in Indian Express today.

ASSOCHAM offers talk with Tatas to resolve the deadlock
Express News Service 2 Sep 08 (http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/ASSOCHAM-offers-talk-with-Tatas-to-resolve-the-deadlock/356300/)

Kolkata, September 1 The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM)has offered to talk to Ratan Tata to break the Singur deadlock, said Venugopal N Dhoot, Videocon chairman and former president of the chamber.
Dhoot was speaking to the media after emerging out of a meeting with Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at Writers' Buildings on Monday.
"Tatas should directly talk to the farmers. Their earnings are nearly Rs 100 crore a day and resolving this issue should not be a problem for them. On behalf of ASSOCHAM, I am ready to talk to the Tatas and I have already sought an appointment from Ratan Tata," Dhoot said. But he quickly added that he was not seeking to mediate on behalf of the government.
Dhoot said that West Bengal was not dependent on any specific project as its GDP has been growing and investors were interested in coming to the state.
The Videocon chairman, who plans to invest Rs 15,000 crore in steel and power projects in the state, said: "For all my projects, we are ready to offer three alternatives — cash, jobs or shares. We do not want to exploit farmers."
Dhoot added that he was ready for direct purchase of land from the farmers at Raghunathgunj in Purulia, where he is going to set up a solar power plant. "We received a royal reception from the villagers. They treated us so well. And in Jamuria in Burdwan, where we are going to set up a steel plant on 4,000 acres, we have already purchased 400 acres from private parties," he said.
Tata Motors, meanwhile, kept its employees away from the small car project site for the third consecutive day in the face of the siege laid by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee demanding the company to return nearly 400 acres of land to farmers.

Senator McCain should have chosen Condi Rice as her VP candidate to improve his chance to become the next President of USA. Khondokeer Delwer is right.

The comedy of the following article is Anwar Zahid himself was a strong element of anti-liberation force.
Delwar also said recently, "There was no democracy in the country from 16th Dec, 1971 to 15th Aug, 1975.   During that time, it was the rule of Rakkhi bahini and BAKSAL." (http://www.amadershomoy.com/online/content/2008/09/01/news0750.htm)
Was BAKSAL or Rakkhi bahini formed on 16th Dec, 1971?  By making a vicious lie incorporating our glorious victory day, Delwar proved he himself is a representative of the anti-liberation force.  "Unity of the anti-liberation forces urged" would be more appropriate title of the following article.

[mukto-mona] Like a boomerang, Palin's stance on sex ed coming back to smack her

US election: Palin under intense scrutiny upon acknowledging teen
daughter's pregnancy

Sarah Palin today came face-to-face with the hard reality of the
media examination she will undergo as John McCain's running mate
when she was forced to confirm that her unmarried school-age
daughter was pregnant.

The revelation immediately renewed questions about the extent to
which Palin, Alaska's governor, and relatively unknown before McCain
announced her as his vice-presidential choice on Friday, had been
vetted.

There is another troubling news for Sarah Palin today. She is being
represented by an attorney in the investigation into the firing of
her public safety commissioner. The Legislature is investigating
whether Palin fired public safety commissioner Walt Monegan after he

Re: [ALOCHONA] Re: How Bangladesh should react to increasing influence of Islam

Mr. Ramjan:

People like you who follow the religion, but not the faith, are neither aware of the history of Islam, nor do they every bother to think beyond what they are taught on Moududi texts and Fridays at Mosques.

Your assertion that a "true Muslim cannot be secular" defies everything that Islam stands for. Islam is the only religion that encourages secular practices. If you kindly read well-documented Islamic history after Prophet Mohammed was exiled to Medina, he established the first Ummah. That Ummah was not a "Muslim Ummah", rather it was a Ummah of Muslims, Christians, Jews, Pagans, and Saebean traders. I can suggest at least 200 books, written by both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars on this, but the list is too long for this place.

Secondly, the only time the Muslim community became non-secular is when Caliph Omar, a known drunkard and a hot-head, decided to start the idea of the "Muslim Ummah" and lead a all-Muslim army to win over the "non-believers".

Thirdly, it was those non-secular Muslims who looted Kabaa and ransacked Mecca, the holiest place for the Muslim community. Need I also add that when the Wahabis (i.e. The fascist clan of Saud) conquered Mecca and decided to establish the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, they also ransacked Mecca? Historical fact!!

Fourthly, in Quran, Allah the Almighty repeatedly tells Prophet Mohammed that the Christians and Jews are the "people of the book", of Abrahamic faith. Prophet even considered them as part of our "Ummah", and even married non-muslims and had non-muslim companions. If that is not secular, I don't know what is.

Your last comment is so ridiculous that it doesn't deserve an answer. But I will respond anyway. You say that "Hitler and Mussolini were secular". Hitler wanted a establish a Germanic Christian nation, and Mussolini was a devout Roman Catholic. None of them were secular in any sense of the word. Hitler expelled German Jews, gypsies, and anyone who did not pass the "pure blood" test, were either sent to the concentration camps, or expelled from Germany. How on earth is that secular? Mussolini, on the other hand, was against anyone, any party, any activity that opposed his oppressive rule. You call them secular?

Perhaps, just perhaps once, people like you would look up the meaning of the word "Secular". I am guessing, you are not going to, so here goes:

Secular:

1. of or pertaining to worldly things or to things that not regards as religious, spiritual, or sacred; temporal

2. not pertaining to or connected with religion

3. Worldly rather than spiritual

Not so bad being a "secular" after all, eh?

Cyrus

Despite of the subject/points for and against M. Anis and Ms Farida Majid, I have the followings:

There is no option for a true Muslim to be a secularist. Yeaa Kana budu – we only pray for you, Ibadat -which extend from personal life to statehood life.

Leading a multicultural life does not mean that a Muslim have to be secular.

Prophet Mohammed (sm) was not a secular, his shabi were not secular. Muslim Caliphates after prophet were not secular, how and from where some Muslims tend to be secular we do not understand. Western magnetic induced man and women can have such aqida which is far from Islam.

Secularist people can do all kinds of heinous act not the Islamist. Hitler Mussolini all was secular.

At the end I would request all the forum members to use modern English not the Victorian from which the west has shifted a long ago.

Thanks

Dear Anis saheb,

I will comply with your request to explain the Qura'anic verse.  Explicating the language of the Qur'an is always a pleasure, and in this case there could an additional reward of exposing the nature of falsehood, i.e., the basic premise of your mischievous piece. But I humbly refuse to engage in any "point by point" argument as per your invitation.

Wa la talbisoo alhaqqa bilbaTili wa taktumoo alhaqqa wa antum t'alamoona [2:42]
And cover not Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know (what it is).

The verb root 'labasa' or 'cover' gives rise to other words such as 'lebaas' meaning cloth or clothes. So, here, 't-albisoo alhaqqa' meaning 'covering or cloaking the truth' indicates a strong sense of intentionality.  In ...bil baTili ..., 'bi' is a frequently used preposition in Arabic most often translated in English as 'with'. The word 'baTil' can have many nuanced meanings such as 'falsehood', 'illegal' 'unjustified' 'harmful' etc.

The verse, therefore, is more than a simple interdiction against lying.  It captures the act of deceitful men succinctly and cautions against indulging in telling the worst kind lies  -- that which cleverly and intentionally conceals the truth in order to cause unjustified harm. Your article, along with some of the Jamaati-style propaganda, is the best example of what the Qur'an has explicitly forbidden us to do.

Your knowledge of Islam is indeed very poor otherwise you would not have used the word 'Islam' so indicriminately to describe such a variety of things ranging from dishonest political posturing,  political propaganda, misogynistic politics and even the Arabic language of the Qur'an.

To say that almost all Islam-'ponthi' people were against the independence of Bangladesh is one of the most insulting remarks to the sovreignty of Bangladesh,  to the general populace of this populous country, and it is surely one of the most sinful lies one can possibly utter! It is also an unforgivable insult to the religion of Islam in Bangladesh.

The truth is only a handful of crooks were involved in heinous activities during the 1971 War of Liberation intent on preventing the independence from Pakistan. And these crooks only pretended to be Pakistan's collaborators.  They were much worse than that, and unfortunately they are still with us.. Any good Muslim, anywhere in the world, would hesitate to call them co-religionists.

Secularism, by the way, is a constitutional issue. It protects the rights of religions especially in a multicultural, multireligious country like Bangladesh.

         Thanks.

         Farida Majid

Dear Ms. Farida Majid,

It seems to me that your e-mail address has been hacked becuase it
looks unusual to me that a secularist like you are quoting from from
Quran. If it is not hacked, then the assumption I made in my article
that influence of Islam is increasing amoung Bangladeshis is true.

I do not know what the verse you mentioned means. My knowledge about
Islam is almost nil. Please give us a translation of it.

I will higly appreciate if you kindly let me know what are the
falsehoods I am trying to spread in my article. It contains 11
points and if you identify the point(s) you have question about, then
I will try to clarify my position.

Regards.

The spread of Hijab is also noticeable. Religion based political
parties are expanding their support base. It has posed a risk for
the country because countries like India are trying to create a
fundamentalist image of Bangladesh and using the rising Islam as a
tool for that. What should we do in this situation? I tried to

[mukto-mona] Mr Mehul Kamdar's two roles

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49670

Mr Nabi questioned the role of Mr Mehul Kamdar as a Moderator but ignored the logic of hyphenating Mr Mehul Kamdar as a participant like us from Mr Mehul Kamdar as a Moderator.

A Moderator is not a bonded animal. I like the Moderators for their high level of tolerance. The forum is incredibly open even to those who behave like 'Saffro-Nazis" in their pathological hate against Muslims with false or tendentiously biased sense of historical awareness and blind adherents of Islam. I enjoy all such postings as pastime occasions for laughters.

[mukto-mona] Re: When Will South Asia Learn to Use Its Abundant Resources of Solar Power Properly

WRT: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mukto-mona/message/49658

Mr Tistarbahe,

As an initial disclaimer, I get all of my income from services that I offer to a European state owned company in the oil sector, dealing with the Middle East, where my family has old friends. I can, therefore, recognize the desperate need for the world to find a way to move away from the use of oil in particular. I am not confident that the USA will do anything about this. Big oil funds both the Republicans and the Democrats (albeit to a lesser extent, though Obama has begun talking about limited drilling after the oil companies started contributing to his campaign) and neither major party here is likely to do much about renewable energy.

Two countries in that part of the world are openly involved in an
undeclared war and in trying to extend their influence through
promoting their own, respective brands of fundamentalism through the
rest of the world in a way that is extremely dangerous to everyone
else, including to many of the citizens of these two countries, Saudi
Arabia and Iran. The Saudis are the more dangerous of the two because
they control not only the production of oil but also every process
including refining it, using the bottom of the barrelr esidues etc to
produce goods that the rest of the world needs, and using their
immense incomes from this enterprise to fund extreme fundamentalist
movements across the world. It is my belief that far more dangerous
than the crisis caused by severe hydrocarbon pollution is the danger
of suicidal terrorism by these countries either directly as in the
case of several spectacular attacks including 9/11 and indirectly in
the financing of terrorism across the rest of the world.

The arrogance that these nations display is because of their oil
derived wealth. Millions of South Asians, Filipinos, South Koreans
etc who work in those countries end up treated as slaves just because
of the Saudis' extreme arrogance because of their wealth. If the USA,
alone, were to cut back on the use of the oil that it buys from Saudi
Arabia, that country would be more than impovrished as things stand
now. Iran is already hurting because France has backed out of a
number of deals with the Iranian oil industry though American
stupidity in Georgia and the Ukraine may well cause the Russians and
the Chinese to step in anytime now.

That, though, is besides the point. Our poor nations in South Asia
are desperate for cheap sources of energy and our politicians too
short sighted to do anything about the immense reserves of renewable
energy that we have in our part of the world to benefit our own
people. The USA offers huge amounts of money - the Exim Bank's India
desk alone has an annual funding of $ 2.2 billion offered for
renewable energy projects in India alone. There is more funding in
other countries. So far, as far as I know, not one cent of the money
offered for India has been utilized. Only the Clinton Foundation has
shown plans for building what would eventually become the world's
largest solar thermal energy plant in Gujarat, though I have no idea
at what stage that project stands. What is most frustrating is the
fact that there IS money to be made out of this business. Perhaps,
our people have become utterly fatalistic and incapable of
understanding the overwhelming benefits to be gained from working in
this area. I have a presentation that I make to universities and
colleges in Illinois and Wisconsin on behalf of my university. I
shall ask for their permission and post it here if they permit me to,
to show just how much economic advantage there is in renewable
energy, especially for poor nations.

Thanks for your response and best wishes,

Mehul Kamdar

PS I do maintain a blog about Renewable Energy as a decided non
expert at www.mehulkamdar.blogspot.com though I do have the
assistance of some of the biggest names in this part of the world in
this area.

                              ESSENCE...WHY....TOMOSA

A journey towards enlighten. State discrimination and torture had its influence on the

Socio-economic, cultural and political issues of the country since pro-Pakistanis

Captured power after the 1975 assassination of Bangabondhu. The war criminals that had fled to Pakistan started grazing on the golden grass of the country by the Indulgence of the military Govt. Religious extremism and fanaticism multiplied at a tremendous rate.

All the artists have a responsibility to reflect upon events and on going Reports back from their hearts, minds and souls. And theatre can bring a community Together, can create illusion of togetherness, can provoke and rankle, and inspire like few other live mediums, when it is done properly. It makes people, who feel they don't have a voice to imagine a creative, non-violent, powerful approach to conflict revolutions. A hidden war is already knocking at our door step. To stop the war all the rational men like me jumping up and down frantically, trying to stop the ship.... did history stop the war?

Protesting it? No.... We are not tied together. The brother blindly shed the brothers' blood, the father rashly slaughtered his own son and the son compelled been butcher to the sire. The country is slowly drowning in darkness, with horrendous news, Harrowing tales of raped and tortured women dragging humanity into a jungle of the devils. You don't care what happens to the rest of us, how many corpse or what the cost is as long as you are the Victors.

I think it is the opportunity for theatre activists to come together, to speak about everything that dampen the sanctity of humanity. I did think only because I thought people would listen and react. I would be up a tree, changes may not take place in my life time, but I am part of continuum. It is important for my children to see what we are all in this together. It's a cry out from the Heart of human being .We want back the constitution of 1972.

An Open Letter to God,
                   ------------ -from Michael Moore

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Dear God,

The other night, the Rev. James Dobson's ministry asked all believers to pray for a storm on Thursday night so that the Obama acceptance speech outdoors in Denver would have to be cancelled.

I see that You have answered Rev. Dobson's prayers -- except the storm You have sent to earth is not over Denver, but on its way to New Orleans! In fact, You have scheduled it to hit Louisiana at exactly the moment that George W. Bush is to deliver his speech at the Republican National Convention.

Now, heavenly Father, we all know You have a great sense of humor and impeccable timing. To send a hurricane on the third anniversary of the Katrina disaster AND right at the beginning of the Republican Convention was, at first blush, a stroke of divine irony. I don't blame You, I know You're angry that the Republicans tried to blame YOU for Katrina by calling it an "Act of God" -- when the truth was that the hurricane itself caused few casualties in New Orleans. Over a thousand people died because of the mistakes and neglect caused by humans, not You.

Some of us tried to help after Katrina hit, while Bush ate cake with McCain and twiddled his thumbs. I closed my office in New York and sent my entire staff down to New Orleans to help. I asked people on my website to contribute to the relief effort I organized -- and I ended up sending over two million dollars in donations, food, water, and supplies (collected from thousands of fans) to New Orleans while Bush's FEMA ice trucks were still driving around Maine three weeks later.

But this past Thursday night, the Washington Post reported that the Republicans had begun making plans to possibly postpone the convention. The AP had reported that there were no shelters set up in New Orleans for this storm, and that the levee repairs have not been adequate. In other words, as the great Ronald Reagan would say, "There you go again!"

So the last thing John McCain and the Republicans needed was to have a split-screen on TVs across America: one side with Bush and McCain partying in St. Paul, and on the other side of the screen, live footage of their Republican administration screwing up once again while New Orleans drowns.

So, yes, You have scared the Jesus, Mary and Joseph out of them, and more than a few million of your followers tip their hats to You.

But now it appears that You haven't been having just a little fun with Bush & Co. It appears that Hurricane Gustav is truly heading to New Orleans and the Gulf coast. We hear You, O Lord, loud and clear, just as we did when Rev. Falwell said You made 9/11 happen because of all those gays and abortions. We beseech You, O Merciful One, not to punish us again as Pat Robertson said You did by giving us Katrina because of America's "wholesale slaughter of unborn children." His sentiments were echoed by other Republicans in 2005.

So this is my plea to you: Don't do this to Louisiana again. The Republicans got your message. They are scrambling and doing the best they can to get planes, trains and buses to New Orleans so that everyone can get out. They haven't sent the entire Louisiana National Guard to Iraq this time -- they are already patrolling the city streets. And, in a nod to I don't know what, Bush's head of FEMA has named a man to help manage the federal government's response. His name is W. Michael Moore. I kid you not, heavenly Father. They have sent a man with both my name AND W's to help save the Gulf Coast.

So please God, let the storm die out at sea. It's done enough damage already. If you do this one favor for me, I promise not to invoke your name again. I'll leave that to the followers of Rev. Dobson and to those gathering this week in St. Paul.

Your faithful servant and former seminarian,

Michael Moore

Dear friends:

Writer, columnist, and a great soul Muhammad Zubair is critically ill; he has been admitted Sunday to a Texas Hospital. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers for his recovery.

Muhammad Zubair is suffering from acute pulmonary complications. At this point, Zubair is still on ventilation, and his breathing has improved from 20% to 60%. The very unfortunate fact is that, that 'chances' look very grim - at this point. Zubair's family, especially, Shahin Bhabi cannot respond to the numerous phone-calls and emails received at her end. Please send mail to Badiuzzaman Nasim for update (badiuz1952@yahoo.com).

Once again, please pray for Zubair's recovery.

[mukto-mona] Proof that the Government of India Practices Casteism

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26498436

India's 'untouchables' last to be helped in floods
Dalits are hit hardest in flooded region, but are lowest on caste
ladder

TRIVENIGANJ, India - In the two weeks since a monsoon-swollen river
burst its banks, ancient prejudices have run just as deep as the
floodwaters. India's "untouchables" are the last to be rescued — if
at all — from a deluge that has killed dozens and made 1.2 million
homeless.

Dalits, the social outcasts at the bottom of the Hindu caste ladder,
have borne the brunt of the devastation as the rampaging Kosi River
swamped hundreds of square miles in northern India after it
overflowed and shifted its course dozens of miles to the east.

On Sunday, one Dalit, Mohan Parwan ran up and down a half destroyed
bridge that has become the headquarters for rescue operations in this
town near the border with Nepal, desperately scanning arriving boats
for signs of his family.

Dozens came in but each time he was disappointed.

Parwan, 43, is from a Dalit village just 2 miles away but completely
cut off by a deep lake created by the swirling waters. As the village
headman, he was put on the first rescue boat that came and was
promised his wife, four children and the rest of the community would
follow.

"It's been six days and since then no boat has come from the
village," he said, tears welling in his eyes.

Dalits have long been shunned, holding a status so low they are
considered outside the complex caste system that is all pervasive in
India, dividing people into hundreds of groups defined by livelihood,
class and ethnicity.

Even India's emergence as a global force — fueled by its economic
growth and high-tech hubs — has failed to break down the barriers and
stigmas that hold them down.

Huddled away from the others
When it comes to rescue operations, it appears Dalits are at the
bottom, too.

In Triveniganj, Dalits huddled together in a small group at the end
of the bridge away from everyone else. They said rescuers were saving
the upper castes and the rich first, leaving their people to suffer
without food and clean water.

"We are 200 people on a roof for days. Two children fell in and
drowned. No one is coming to help us," said Kishore Ram, 22, who got
out on one of the few boats to visit his village.

"The officials don't listen to us little people. We can't offer
bribes and influence, I'm just a poor student," Ram said.

Hearing about the flood, Prithvi Chand Baswan, a 38-year-old Dalit,
rushed home from the neighboring state of Punjab where he works as a
farm laborer, searching for his wife and six children, ages 3 to 12.
Four miles from home, he was stopped by flooding.

"People from the village say they are sheltering in the temple, but I
can't get to them and they won't send a boat for a Dalit village," he
said, holding his head in despair.

Ravindra Prasad Singh, a state government official coordinating
rescue work in Triveniganj, about 875 miles east of New Delhi, denied
that Dalits were being ignored.

"It's ridiculous. They are lying," he said, but he could not explain
why only a single boat of Dalits had come in during all of Sunday
afternoon even though they make up more than half the region's people.

More help promised
On Monday, other government officials acknowledged there was a
serious problem with Dalits being ignored, but said they were working
to fix it.

"We are aware of these complaints," said Prataya Amrit, a top
disaster management official in Bihar state, the scene of the
flooding.

Amrit said greater resources were being sent to Dalit majority areas
like Triveniganj and army and navy officers were now handling rescues
to ensure less abuses.

The military "presence will instill a lot of confidence," he
said. "In an operation of this magnitude you can't distinguish
between rich and poor."

Officials also commandeered private boats in an effort to prevent
richer and higher castes from monopolizing the vessels.

India's treatment of Dalits is a long and bitter history of good
intentions and little progress.

Caste discrimination has been outlawed for more than a half century,
and a quota system was established with the aim of giving Dalits a
fair share of government jobs and places in schools. But their plight
remains dire.

Difficult for law to do anything
Most Dalits, like Parwan, live in destitute villages of rickety mud
and thatch huts with no electricity or running water, kept down by
ancient prejudice and caste-based politics.

In much of rural India, people from lower castes are barred from
using upper-caste drinking wells and kept out of temples. Ignoring
the prohibitions is often met with violence.

In times of calamity, their situation is no better.

"Caste hierarchy is a source of deep emotions in India. In the face
of these emotions it is difficult for the law or the army to do
anything," said Chandrabhan Prasad, a New Delhi-based caste
expert. "The rescuers have their caste loyalty and will try rescue
their own first."

Faced with indifference and even hostility from many officials, one
group of Dalits gave up waiting for help and waded into the neck-deep
water in search of their kin.

"What can we do?" Parwan said, after being angrily shooed away by
Singh for again asking to be given a boat to help his village.

"I'm just a Harijan," Parwan added, using a euphemism for Dalits
coined by Indian pacifist icon Mohandas K. Gandhi. It means "child of
God."
