[mukto-mona] Maulana Waris Mazhari: Muslims and the West

Muslims and the West

By Maulana Waris Mazhari

(Translated from Urdu by Yoginder Sikand)

The issue of strained relations between Muslims and the West is a long-standing one, and it has taken a new turn following the attacks of 9/11. In recent years, much has been written on the subject by both Muslim as well as Western scholars. Following the publication of Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and Samuel Huntington's The Clash of Civilisations in the late 1990s, a large number of Western scholars have concluded that reconciliation between Muslims and the West is impossible and that a clash between them is inevitable.  Influential Western think-tanks have aggressively pursued this line of thinking, as have extremist religious and political forces, particularly Christian evangelicals and Zionist organisations, all across Europe and America. In this context, the crucial question arises as to how the situation can be changed, as indeed it must. Do Muslims have any proper strategy or programme in this regard? My answer is firmly in the negative.

Despite the massive anti-Western movements and sentiments that have characterised much of the Muslim world since the last one hundred and fifty years, the fact remains that Muslim intellectuals, particularly the ulema, have only a very superficial understanding and knowledge of the West. In actual fact, there has been no serious attempt on the part of Muslim scholars to properly study and evaluate Western thought, civilization and history. Today, our religious scholars' views about the West are about the same as the West had about Muslims and Islam several centuries ago in the wake of the Crusades. Many Muslim scholars have the same sort of stereotypical understandings of the West as the West had about Muslims at the time of the Crusades. Our religious scholars believe, and this is what they tell their followers, that the West simply stands for drunkenness, sexual license, immorality and all other sorts of wanton desires and pleasures. Because of this approach we have not been able to learn from the good things that the West has to offer, not even about aspects of the Muslim scientific heritage that the West had taken from us and had then built on. Instead, in many Muslim circles hatred of the West is considered to be the biggest sign of religiousness. This mentality was formed in the colonial period, and it should have been done away with the end of the European colonial empires. However, instead of that happening, it has been greatly reinforced and strengthened, and has now become so deep-rooted that Muslim reformers find it virtually impossible to combat.

Scores of institutions for the study of Islam and Muslim culture and history have been established in the West, and several Western universities have special departments concerned with these fields. They have produced a massive amount of literature. In contrast, there are probably not even two or three scholarly institutions in the Muslim world devoted to the study of the West using modern scholarly methods. Universities in Muslim countries should have set up departments of Western studies, and there should have been private- and government-funded institutions for the study of the West, but, unfortunately, these do not exist. We desperately need such institutions, to study Western history and culture in a critical yet dispassionate way, so that Muslims can understand what the limitations or drawbacks of contemporary Western civilisation are and also its virtues, which they could adopt.

Today, most Muslims have a double-standard approach to the West. On the one hand, many of them are vociferously opposed to the West and insist that Muslims should stay away from Western culture as far as possible. At the same time, many of them fervently desire to migrate to the West! I have been twice to America, where I met several Muslims who brand America as 'the Great Satan' but still continue to live there for the economic benefits and opportunities that America provides them. They show-off their American passports or, if they do not as yet have them, are impatiently awaiting the day when they would receive American citizenship. Why, one must ask, these double-standards? If these Muslims are so anti-America, why don't they leave that country and return to what they consider as dar ul-Islam, 'the abode of Islam', where many of them came from?

I believe that there are numerous aspects of Western culture and society that reflect the virtues that characterised the early history of Islam. In contrast, look at many Muslim countries, where groups that want to serve the cause of Islam are under severe restrictions. It is unfortunate that almost the whole focus of Muslim groups in the West is on seeking to get recognition for Muslim cultural identity, often to the point of excess. Take, for instance, the case of women's dress. Hijab or modest dress, is adequate, but some Muslims in the West make a big hue and cry demanding that the face-veil (naqab) be allowed, and some even go beyond that, unmindful of the fact that this might lead to further escalation of anti-Muslim sentiments in society. Some extremist self-styled Islamic groups in the West, such as the Hizb ut-Tahrir, even raise the simplistic slogan of establishing an Islamic Caliphate in the West, completely forgetting that the liberty to do all this is not available even in the so-called dar ul-Islam.

The real conflict between Muslims and the West today is in the realm of ideas. Militarily, Muslims were defeated by the West two centuries ago, and, far from seriously hoping to militarily overwhelming the West, Muslim countries are thoroughly dependent on them for military aid. To effectively defend themselves, Muslims must first intellectually understand the West, and for this we need a group of Occidentalists, counterparts of the West's Orientalists. But, unlike the classical Orientalists' approach to the Orient, these scholars should not be blindly critical of the West, but should, in an objective fashion, examine both the drawbacks and the virtues of the West. Most Orientalists, as Edward Said so brilliantly brought out in his magnum opus Orientalism, did not adopt such a balanced approach, and actually served as tools of Western imperialism, but the sort of Occidentalists that we require must seek to objectively evaluate the West.

Islamophobia in the West

Some time ago, I met a Muslim professor who teaches in an American university, and I asked him about the future of Muslims in America. He seemed very pessimistic about this, and even said that Western powers might one day ask their Muslim citizens to leave. Personally, I do not think that this would be an easy task. Muslim and Western countries are too inter-dependent for this to happen. This is why it is imperative for them to seriously work to counter the present climate of hatred and mistrust between Muslims and the West. Unfortunately, the simplistic approach and egotism of some Muslim groups in the West and the propaganda of some Christian and Jewish religious and semi-religious forces are giving a tremendous boost to Islamophobic sentiments across the West. The practice of the Prophet Muhammad was to seek to create normal or settled conditions and for this to accept the terms and conditions set by his opponents so that the climate of hatred and conflict could be done away with. This is also what Muslims must seek to do, without compromising on the necessities of their faith. Muslims must also desist from viewing the West and Western culture in stark, Manichaean terms. They must seek to learn from the good things that the West has to offer while abstaining from its draw-backs, for everything that is good, no matter what its source, is of value to the whole human community.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT AFSAN:
He is currently a 2008 Oak Fellow at Colby College in Maine. He has had a parallel career in development work and the media. He has been active in multi-disciplinary research, media relations, journalism, and program development for two decades, and is one of the editors of an authoritative work on Bangladesh's War of Independence. He held a high position in UNICEF, but left to become a freelancer and social activist. He was also the BBC's correspondent in Bangladesh but left to concentrate on development-related work. These two resignations are indicative of his personality. Both were extremely prestigious jobs,
but he gave them up to pursue social activism. In 1994, he established, HASAB, a funding nonprofit for organizations working in
the area of HIV, STDs, and AIDS. Afsan has had remarkable success in designing communications materials that appeal to both the youth and elders alike. In 1995 he developed a fifteen-part sex education series for the BBC entitled "Sexwise," which aired in 1995-96. The first broadcasting of such a program in Asia, the series reached ten million listeners and became the most successful radio series in Bangladesh.

The companion book to the series completely sold out of stores. His reputation as a media professional and development worker is firmly established. [ALOCHONA] Sheikh Hasina has agreed due to foreign Gods pressure!

Dear All,

First Barrister Mr. Rafique proposed to both Khaleda & Hasina for face to face dialogue. Sheikh Hasina didn't agree first though Khaleda has accepted it without any condition. For the last few months Hasina & her BAL party were arrogant & proud that Hasina does not need to discuss with Khaleda directly. Even their Secretary Ashraf now Spokesman for BAL arrogantly told to Mr. Rafique to oil his own machine for his proposal, which obviously disrespect to an honorable person. But only few like Zillur Rahman were remained silent & had not shown clear expression about Mr. Rafique's proposal. But at last 2 days ago 3 Ambasadors from Italy, Holland & Sweden pressured on Hasina & only then she was agreed to face to face discussion with Khaleda. So Hasina has no sincerity & affection for this country & country's respective persons. If Hasina has that then she would have agreed with Mr. Rafique's proposal earlier. So foreigners are Hasina & BAL's God. They do not care about Bangladesh & its people.

That is why I respect Khaleda Zia for saying "we have friends in abroad but no God". That is why BNP may not be an angel party but far more better than BAL.

Thank You All,

Md. Mostafa Kamal.

[mukto-mona] On Nehru

I may be misunderstood as a Nehruvian for this article in the daily
Sakaal Times today.Today is Nehru's 120th birthday.

Rediscovering Nehru by Sankar Ray 14 Nov 08
(http://epaper.sakaaltimes.com/ST/ST/2008/11/14/index.shtml?ArtId=008_004&Search=Y)
With neo-liberal capitalism shaken, Nehruvian ideas deserve a fresh appraisal

W hile interviewing environmental activist, Medha Patkar, in 2004,
Robert Jensen from the School of Journalism, Texas, made a conscious
dig at the partial and biased perception on Nehru. When Medha referred
to the general criticism of Nehru for describing dams the "temples of
modern India", Jensen shot back: Nehru said that in 1955, but three
years later he changed tack and described big dams as "a disease of
gigantism". In other words, Nehru took three years to realise the need
for judicial water management. Pitiably, environmentalists of
different hues have a fascination to quote Nehru's words of 1955.
Nehru is misjudged and misinterpreted, especially by media pundits.
The late Janardan Thakur in his book Prime Ministers Nehru To Vajpayee
wrote: "Most of the evils that have corroded India in the last 50
years had their beginnings during the Nehru Raj." Implicitly, he
inferred, Nehru fostered corruption and questioned the latter's value
judgment. Such castigations reflect anathema, if not jaundiced view;
more sensationalism than substantiation.
Had Nehru patronised corruption, the imprisonment of the powerful
feudal lord and minister of civil supplies in the Congress-led Central
Province government in 1950, Rao Shiv Bahadur Singh, could not have
been possible. The jagirdaar from Churhat, Madhya Pradesh, had
allegedly accepted bribe for issuance of a forged document, which
permitted the closed Panna Diamond Mining Syndicate to resume
operations. Braving pressure from some bigwigs within the party, Nehru
did not budge an inch from his decision. The minister, incidentally
father of the present Union minister for human resource development,
Arjun Singh, was expelled from the Congress .
Or take the Haridas Mundhra -tainted US $ 3.2 million LIC scandal,
unearthed by Nehru's estranged son-in-law, Feroze Gandhi. Nehru
instituted a probe by the retired chief justice of the Bombay High
Court, M C Chagla. Finance Minister, T T Krishnamachari, and his
finance secretary, H M Patel, were indicted and removed from their
posts. The practice of downplaying scandals with 'action taken report'
was not in Nehru's parliamentary lexicon. The irony of history was
that the Gandhian Prime Minister Morarji Desai, Nehru's ideological
adversary, made H M Patel the Finance Minister in the first
non-Congress government at the Centre.
In fact, Nehru had to work in a corrupting milieu, which he wanted to
take head on but failed. "Most of my ministers are reactionary and
scoundrels but as long as they are my ministers I can keep some check
on them. If I were to resign they would be the government and they
would unloose the forces that I have tried since I came to power to
hold in check," Nehru had famously told the noted British scientist
and communist fellow traveller, John Desmond Bernal, in 1954 in
Peking. This revelation was culled from the Bernal Papers at the
University of Cambridge. Nehru was like the lonesome Casabianca in a
darkening bay.
N o doubt, Nehru was a prisoner of indecision quite often in crucial
moments. Nonetheless, his sincerity to curb corruption is above board.
And he was aware of the necessity for selfless and ethical commitment
for politicians in India, which was in tatters, thanks to the
unbridled loot of country's wealth by the British Raj. "If there is a
selfish leadership, dishonest administration, economic distress and
lack of a national purpose, such a society will always remain
unstable. If we protect dharma, it will protect us; otherwise we will
be neglected by it," Nehru had stated in a moment of confessional
mood.
Nehru's strength and weakness revolved around his emotionalism. His
opponents thrive on his tactless emotional expressions. Consider his
jehad against hoarders or black marketeers in 1945 in Calcutta. Shaken
by the appalling distress of millions of Bengal villagers after the
infamous Bengal Famine of 1943, he thundered that the Congress
government in independent India would publicly hang the hoarders from
the nearest lamppost.
Historical documents, such bas the Nanavati Papers, show that the
famine was a man-made one with some tycoons amassing huge sums in
collaboration with the colonial authorities. As a barrister, Nehru
ought to have understood that no law would permit a government to mete
out a harsh punishment to hoarders and black marketeers. Small wonder,
right-wingers inside the Congress like Acharya J B Kripalani used to
taunt Nehru by pondering whether there was any shortage of black
marketeers in the country. The likes of Kripalani had abhorred
Nehruvian concept of economic development. Ironically, the Supreme
Court had remarked last year that the only way to rid the country of
corruption is to hang some of the corrupt people from lampposts.
The 1950s witnessed an era of experimentation of 'independent
capitalism', based on a strong public sector with exclusive rights in
production and management of core sectors, mainly heavy and capital
goods, and restricted rights to direct foreign investment. This was in
contrast to the dependent variant, imposed by the US MNCs in Latin
America. Some Soviet scholars were cynical about the independent
strain of capitalism and believed that any development in nonsocialist
peripheral economies would be dependent. The hint was at the so called
Indian communists who overestimated transformative potentials of
Nehru-Indira policies.
The Soviet prediction was proved prophetic in 1991 when the
Congress-led government of P V Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh as
his Finance Minister introduced IMF-prescribed reform with hidden
agenda that were no beneficial to the economy. That was the beginning
of compradorisation.
Blasting 'Manmohanomics', wellknown Marxian scholar, Samir Amin ,
director, Dakar-based Third World Forum, wrote in Monthly Review, "The
1991 turn toward liberalism originated in the compradore leadership of
the Congress Party, but its political beneficiaries, as elsewhere,
have been culturalists who found a ready audience for their irrational
illusions in the social tensions and misery always attendant to
liberal reforms."
The NDA, he described as more rightist, ran "a Hindu-compradore
government, which wholly subscribed to the dictates of imperialism on
the offensive (accelerating economic liberalisation), failed. In the
2004 elections the premises of Hindu culturalism and liberalism
promoted by the compradore bourgeoisie and its imperialist masters
were jointly held responsible for the social catastrophe by the
majority of the Indian electorate," he added.
With the neo-liberal capitalism shaken to the core under the suicidal
over- financialisation, Nehru and his ideas deserve a fresh appraisal.

Mr. Mohiuddin Anwar

So you have admitted that Saudis are the bootlickers of USA ,
because USA is the only superpower on earth....

The Saudi Monarchs  serves the US-global interest which
is tied to the survival of the Monarchy and is basically a serious
roadblock to the real freedom & democracy for the Arab people and
the liberation of Palestine.

Why do you think that "We have to remember that USA is the only
superpower on Earth." is the unbreakable law of history ?

During the rise of Islam, Romans were the only superpower on Earth.
Did the Muslims kiss the Roman-butts and lick  Roman-boots in
those days

It's a great shame that the so-called "religious" people like yourself and your
Saudi  buddies depend on cronyism in instead of depending on Allah the Almighty.
Shame on you !!!!

Sorry, I had to be little rude on you... but I can not resist being rude, when
I see a stooge who justifies cronyism.

BTW, doesn't Islam tells us to always depend on Allah, no matter
how powerful the emperors and the tyrants are!

Thanks for your patience.

Syed Aslam

PS: Do you think  President-elect Barak Obama will ever KISS
a Monarch like George Bush did:

[ALOCHONA] Nehru- the chief architect of Kashmir Slavery

Nehru- the chief architect of Kashmir Slavery

By Dr Abdul Ruff Colachal

14th Nov is the birth day of Indian first premier Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, celebrated in the so-called "secular democracy" India as Children's' Day, as if he was a great lover of universal children when he made foundations to get the innocent Kashmiri parents murdered regualry by his terror forces. How much love Indians have for Muslim children in India and Kashmir merits a brief inquiry. Some hollow emotional Hindu friends write to me about "freedom of expression" and "equability" being granted in this "great" nation but they refuse to look at the plight of Kashmir Muslim children who are being harassed by Indian terror forces occupying their nation by brutal force and killing their kith and kin. When hegemonic India showcases its weapon prowess in Kashmir it is the children who are worst affected by this because they fear such terror shows would eventually kill their parents and themselves.

Harassment of Kashmiri children, including female, in all possible ways by the so-called security forces is a routine picture in Kashmir every where and almost all the time. Indian Hindus want to showcase the superioty of hegemonic mother India. Whether it is an "elected" government or Governor's rule in Jammu Kashmi the situation does not vary any significantly in the region. But with an elected government in Srinagar and Jammu, Indian government is free to use terror to silence even the children in JK because they think these are the future freedom fighters and they should be contained very early so that they learn how to live under a foreign yoke. Since Indian forces hate Kashmiri Muslims, therefore, even children are not spared by them.
Kashmir children should be told about what kind of India Pundit Nehru had created and why they are the real suffers today at the blood stained hands of terrorist India. Currently there two issues in JK, one the farcical Indian poll and another, the possible role of Obama Barack, the President elect, in JK freedom struggle. Kashmiris look forward to Obama's constructive role in securing freedom for Kashmiris, but the Indian strategists are growing sleepless these days on that account. The Indians want USA to support Indian terror case in Kashmir. Many American leaders (Presidents, Presidents-elect and defeated Presidential-aspirants) thought they could help in finding a solution to the Kashmir issue and failed to do so because of arrogance displayed by India for which there were supports around the terrorist world. Indians argue if the USA interfered, other than saying the usual phrase "let India and Pakistan resolve the issue amicably: which would only mean supporting Indian terrorism in Kashmir, it would burn their fingers and damage Indo-US relations. That is an indirect Indian threat to USA. However, India closely purses its Indian terror case with the supports of Obama in the USA, saying that India is also a secular democracy like the USA and anti-Islamic and hence USA should stand by India .

Many hard-line Indians are amazed that the President-elect oblivious of the past misadventures of the US in the sub-continent should be thinking of one more. Well-informed sources in India don't want USA to support the Kashmiris case in any manner and say that if the President-elect wants to severely damage the developing Indo-US relations he could not have thought of a better idea than to "meddle" in Kashmir . There is amazement - and confusion - in India over reports that one of the first acts of the President will be to appoint former President Bill Clinton as his Special Envoy on the Kashmir issue to facilitate a settlement between India and Pakistan .

Indian strategists in USA are thronging around the White House to make USA pro-India nation especially when Indo-US nuclearism has been clinched on heavy payment basis. Indian terrorism specialists argue that Democrats would not support Indian state terrorism in Jammu Kashmir even though it would not reign in the atrocities of Indian on innocent Kashmiris.

Americans, across the political divide, just play usual international politics to advance its national interests and want to use the greedy Indians for that. USA indeed had earlier suggested to Sheikh Abdullah, the then Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir that he should seek independence and promised that the US would support him. When the Indian Intelligence Bureau informed Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister, of Stevenson's secret discussions with Abdullah, he sacked Abdullah. Adlai Stevenson became persona non grata with the Indian political class and public. When Clinton became the President in 1993 he could not resist the temptation to have a go at settling the Kashmir issue. Indian specialists view that US interest in Kashmir has damaged Indo-US relations. USA keeps saying let India and Pakistan resolve the issue on their own, meaning nothing for freedom Kashmiris in content.

US President elect Obama chose Pakistani president Zardari as one of the eight world leaders to speak to once he was declared elected, but Indians are pressing their pro-India mafia in the USA to request Obama to reply to Indian phone calls. Now clearly India and its militant like hardliner specialists feel the Obama and his Democratic Party are bad for India and Osama Bin would again play a role to help USA to secure Kashmir to the real owners, the freedom fighters. Indian intelligence and its media men say that in the history of Indo-American relations since India became independent in 1947, there have been more instances of meddling by Democrats than by Republicans. Many "diplomacy" stalwarts suggest to Indian foreign office to catch the policy makers in Washington to fix the Kashmir issue in favor of terror India.

Discovery of graveyards in Kashmir should make Kashmir children sure of Indian hidden agenda in Kashmir and what bleak future awaits them in future if terror India continues to occupy their lands. Indian leaders, their media as well as Kashmir media just close their eyes on the fate of Kashmir children while loudly pronouncing Nehru's list of great achievements. Muslim children in India are being molded by their unconsciously pro-Hindutva Muslim parents and the Hindu political organizations surrounding them to respect Hindu culture in preference to their own, if they want to exist peacefully in Indian secular democracy. Kashmiris children should have that ate to and only freedom can salvage this crude situation. And Kashmiri children would benefit by preventing tricky Indian polls and certainly not by going with their parents and relatives to polling booths to vote by standing in long queues braving scotching heat and piercing cold. Let pro-India elements conduct their own party polls in a truly democratic way first without following the retched feudal rules to get their "own people" elected to the posts.

World history has many instances of colonial and imperial powers surrendering sovereignty back to the suppressed and oppressed nations, India got freedom from UK, and one can expect India to do the same in due course once they are damn sure of insistent resistance to Indian occupation by Kashmiris. But the Indian leaders still imagine Indian military is not occupying Kashmir. A glimpse of killings, destructions and poll arrangement by using Indian cash (stolen?) and muscle will reassure the Kashmir children of what kind of India Pundit Nehru had carved out for Muslims in India and Kashmir right in 1947. Kashmiris from a free nation have been turned into a flock of slaves by Nehruvian India by sung brutal force and some pro-India elements in Kashmir. Same Nehru India has also has done enough damage to Indian Muslims in all respects, including spiritually, by dismantling the Grand Babri Mosque on the UK assumptions on the basis of the narrative Ramayana that there was temple once upon a time. Indian Muslim leaders are either co-opted or silenced by Hindu India. So, the ordinary Muslims in this democracy are afraid of even talking about anything against Indian terrorism, destruction of Babri Mosque, attack on Muslims, etc.. Funny secular India indeed!

Fruits yielded cannot vary entirely from the seeds one sows first, and Indian state terrorism in Kashmir is the loudest example as well as illustration of that painful fact. But will Kashmir children be free from Indian state terror atrocities?

Dear Mr. Alamgir
I dont usually comment on the merits of your posts since they are full of giberrish and  incomprehensible language. But I would like to point out that this particular post your language is littered with such fundamental grammatical & spelling mistakes. I dont know or care how old you are but even a first grader should be able to write better than what you have written.

I am sure your beloved Hasi Apu (whoever she may be, just kidding! ) is will be able to stand your third class name-calling but I dont think the English Language will be able to survive any further grevious assaults.

So please be a dear and have mercy on us !

Friends

What has happened to a proud and dignified nation BANGLADESH.
The way our criminal and thug politicians are making the glorious nation bow down to the stupid criminal so called DHIPLO  MATS who by violating the GENEVA CONVENTION and interfering in our internal affair.

I feel pity when the so called erudite BAL Secretary Ashraf expresses satisfaction at the violation of the nations chastity by these culprits DHIPLO  MATS. Does the BAL know that if they wish to make any comment on illegal billion Dollar acuired by Switzerland from stolen money of the thug policians of the 3rd world and deposited in SWISS Bank  ?? Can he make any condition to the acts of US govt in the Guentenamo concentration camp or rendition ?????  No not only he none in the 3rd world can do so !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The people are appehensive about the conspitorial attitude of the mohan netri Hasi apu by observing her close door hobnob with another shameless stupid DHIPLO  MAT  Pinaikka CP. A pagol will also laugh at the coments of the stupid Pinaikkaaaaaaa that he talked for one and half hour IN CLOSE DOOR about the health matters of Hasia Apu !!!!!!! This is nothing but a comment of any clown in the Circus.
The detractors may make obnoxious observations as HASI APU DID IN THE PAST ABOUT OTHERS IN THE MOHAN SHANGSHAD

In my opinion the BAL and its allies Kutta Jibis are out to desroy the sanctity and entity and hand over the hard earned sovereignty of the nation to Hindustan. So, it can be summerized that they the BAL want to come to power in "Jeno teno Way" as usual either welcoming the great LUICHCHA CHORITROHIN ERSAIDDA or illegal military take over by gen Nasim or the illegal CTG ans whore like HUDA CEC.

The patritic people must be vigilant against the Hindustani concubines and put up strong will to keep up the hard earned SHADHINATA.

78pc govt officials involved in corruption

Wednesday November 12 2008 23:36:33 PM BDT

Truth and Accountability Commission (TAC) will soon bring a report to light on grim scenario of corruption indulged in by officials and employees of different government institutions. "During conducting our activities, we were astonished to see that corruption has totally eaten(The Bangladesh Today)

up different government establishments specially Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL). When we studied an investigation report on corruption of BTCL (defunct BTTB), the officials of this organisation through forging sanctioned budget and prepared bills, looted crores of public money," TAC Chairman Justice Habibur Rahman Khan told reporters at a press conference held at his office at Hare Road in city on Wednesday.

He said the TAC will suggest to the government, through the report, how and in what way government can be freed from widespread corruption. "Besides, we will request the government to activate country's enquiry bodies in order to unearth the root of corruption. It is not difficult for them (Inquiry bodies) to unearth the root of corruption if enquiry bodies become active and work sincerely," Justice Habibur Rahman Khan said.

TAC Chairman said the case filed against officials and employees of BTCL will be sent to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to unearth the grim scenario of corruption through its investigation.

"I think if institutional corruption like in BTCL, come to light before the public through this report, people will be able to know and see the real picture of corruption and how it is being committed at different government institutions. Around 78 per cent government officials are involved in various corruptions. A total of 389 clemency seekers have come to the TAC. Of them 303 are the government officials and employees," Justice Habibur Rahman said.

Citing an example of corruption of BTTB (BTCL), a member of TAC said "We are surprised to see that for shifting some files from one place to another a number of 256 labourers were deployed in a day."

TAC Chairman further said 389 applicants including 39 women have applied to the commission for clemency voluntarily confessing their corruption and surrendering illegal properties.

Besides, TAC completed its hearing on 259 cases till date where applicants admitted their ill-gotten wealth worth around Tk 27,79,38,768 while the commission asked the absolution seekers to deposit their illegal properties within three weeks and around Tk 14,46,60,963 has been deposited to the government treasury by 154 clemency seekers.

Replying to query, he said that the TAC would be able to dispose off some 500 cases within the time frame set by the government. "In the meantime, we have disposed some 259 cases."

Meanwhile, TAC has already distributed 65 clemency certificates among those who have already deposited their admitted ill-gotten properties to the public exchequer and 40 certificates are ready to be distributed among them.
