[mukto-mona] Why blame Charles Darwin?

On 13th September, the Herald in its 'Mirror' segment carried an
Opinion Piece by Bernard Simoes titled "Did Charles Darwin mislead
us?'. The same is available for viewing at http://tinyurl.com/npzrus

In the said Opinion piece, the author pins the blame for all the evils
that have afflicted mankind – terrorism, wars, racism, etc - on
Charles Darwin and his Evolution theory, calling it the bane of
Science.

Today's Herald Mirror carries a rejoinder by Patrick Ferdinand. The
same is appended below.

------------------------------------
Why blame Charles Darwin?
By Patrick Ferdinand

Mr. Bernard Simoes had written a diatribe against Charles Darwin and
his monumental work 'The Origin of Species', three weeks ago on this
very page of the Sunday herald Mirror(13 September), accusing him of
being the cause of all the ills that have afflicted mankind since its
publication, 150 years ago.

I have some answers to the doubts raised by Mr. Simoes, a
'Creationist' along with his tribe of Fundamentalist Christians, who
believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible. That the species
of all creation were created separate and have existed in their
separate forms, since the beginning of time till this date. He terms
'Evolution', a hoax and merely a theory, not a fact of science.

It astonishes me to know that people like Mr. Simoes do exist in our
own India, where of the six systems of Philosophical thoughts, two are
atheistic, apart from Buddhism. That down the ages, religious
literature in India has the largest volume of agnostic, skeptical and
atheistic writing than anywhere in Europe. And this was long before
Darwin and his Origin of Species appeared. Atheism has existed in
Europe, since the time of the Greeks. So what is Bernard Simoes
whining about? So much for his myth that Darwin ushered in atheism, in
the last 150 years…

That Darwin gave people license to promote racism and slavery. If
Bernard Simoes has read his Bible critically and not lapped up every
word as the word of God, he will realize that far from being the word
of God, the two Testaments, Old and New, are chaotically cobbled
together anthology of disjointed documents, composed, revised,
translated, mistranslated, distorted and improved by hundreds of
anonymous authors, editors, copyists unknown to us and to each other
spanning centuries. That it is a hotchpotch of Babylonian, Persian and
Egyptian myths, pseudo-History, ptolemaic geography and plenty of
sheer sexual vulgarity and gore.

At the same time it cannot be denied that certain books of the Bible
do contain sublime passages of outstanding moral and literary merit.
And why not? All so called religious books contain some merit, because
they contain the accumulated wealth of mankind. Man, being man, is
capable of sounding the heights and debts of human conduct. Another
proof, if proof be needed that-the Bible is a work of man, not God.

Further, he will learn that the God of the Old Testament, the Father
of the God of the New Testament, is the most unpleasant character in
all fiction; jealous, proud, petty unjust, unforgiving, vindictive, a
bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, a misogynist, a racist, a genocidal
megalomaniac, sado-masochistic and capriciously malevolent bully. I
would advise Bernard Simoes to read his Bible again and if he has any
difficulty discovering such a God, kindly contact me and I will
provide him Chapter and verse from the Bible, which will substantiate
every attribute of God that I have mentioned, not of God, but the God
of the Old Testament.

As regards Black Slavery, it has been in existence since Biblical
times and even earlier. In fact, it is only in the last 150 years that
slavery has been abolished, thanks to the compatriots of Charles
Darwin.

As regards Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin, all were Christians, the
first two Catholics, the third, Russian Orthodox. Their misdeeds had
nothing to do with the theory of Evolution. They behaved as they did,
because their minds had not evolved since biblical times, just as
Bernard Simoes' mind is still fossilised in the Bible.

True, Evolution is still a theory; that is because Science is an
eternal search for the truth that is the beauty of Science. And what
is the story of 'Creation in Genesis', if not a pious myth? It is
Evolution, the theory that we have evolved from lesser beings, that we
still carry within ourselves part animal and part human
characteristics, that man can be both good and evil, not because of
'Original Sin' and the Fall of Man.

Science being Science has to proceed step by faltering step to get to
the truth, but the Church knows everything above, the same Church that
did not know, whether the Earth revolved around the Sun or the Sun
revolved around the Earth, till the 17th Century. Something that
perceptive Indians knew in the 5th Century AD.

Yes, Nazism, Fascism and Communism were perpetuated by Catholic
societies and Catholic Governments, that in fact banned Darwin. And
what about all the misery and suffering that afflicted mankind, since
the birth of Christianity? The condemnation of Jews for no fault of
theirs, who was responsible for the horrors of the Spanish
Inquisition, the burning of witches and heretics and dissenting
Christians? The unnecessary slaughter during the Crusades and the myth
of the 'holy and just war'? Where was Darwin then?

The pernicious consequences of racism, initiated by the 'God of the
Old Testament' when he chose Abraham and his progeny as his 'Chosen
People' and gifted them the whole of Palestine in Secula Seculorum are
with us till today. The Church taught this myth for two thousand
years. At the same time, the Jews were the perfidious race branded
'Christ- killers'. This myth boomeranged on the Jews, thanks to the
Catholic Church. Today, the tables are turned and the Jews, who
suffered the atrocities of the holocaust, are visiting the same
brutalities on the Palestinians, giving rise to Muslim fundamentalism
and Jehad. This new holocaust threatens not just the peace of the
Middle East, but the security of the whole world. Who is the Father of
this historic injustice? Certainly not Darwin.

Evolution still being a theory there is plenty of intelligent research
and scholarship in evolutionary science. The brainwashing is done by
those who believe that the Bible is the last word on everything under
the sun. There can be no research no questioning, since they know
everything, because the Bible tells them so.

No, Mr. Simoes, the Origin of Species does not lie, because Evolution
is an ongoing process. Evolution by Natural selection is NOT CHANCE
but a cumulative process.

To try to explain everything by quoting God is ignorance and mental
lethargy, dressed up in spirituality. Finally, as regards Evolution
and morality, organized Religion is an insult to human morality. With
or without it, you have good people doing good things and evil people
doing evil things, but for good people to do evil things, it takes
religion. Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they
do it from religious conviction.

[mukto-mona] Re: [khabor.com] FW: Medical University Affairs: Sacked Doctors

It is unfortunate that certain very senior professionals were sacked recently.
If it is done only because these sacked doctors are sympathetic to other political party
then it is totally unacceptable.
If it is done because they were members of a doctors association which supports
certain political party then it is undesirable.
If it is done because their initial appointments were not legal then I have no comment.

All appointments/terminations/sackings should be based on professional, ethical and moral considerations. Political affiliations should not have any role in these decisions.

Unfortunately, in our country not all people follow these ethics of appointments and terminations.

We used to hear similar allegations  before this government came to power.

That means no political government is totally fair.
They tend to do lot of wrong things in trying to reward their party faithfuls.

In a civilized society these are unfortunate.

Medical University Affairs: Sacked Doctors Should Be Restored

News papers have reported  that seven out of 11 terminated doctors of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) yesterday served a joint legal notice to the BSMMU authorities seeking justice while two others applied for contractual appointments. Advocate Ahsanul Karim served the notice on behalf of Prof Matiur Rahman Mollah of Dental Department, Prof Nasim Akhter Chowdhury of Gynaecology, Prof Abul Kashem Chowdhury of Microbiology, Prof SA Khan of Transplant Urology, Jahangir Kabir of Nephrology, Prof Sayeba Akhter of Gynaecology and Associate Prof Sharif Hossain of Plastic Surgery .Prof Sayeba Akhter of Gynaecology yesterday also submitted a letter to University Registrar Abdul Gafur to review her termination. Prof Mizanur Rahman of Radiology and Prof Nazrul Islam of Cardiology applied for contractual appointments as per the Public Servants (retirements) Act, 1974 that allows the retired persons to join any autonomous institute on a contract basis.Ten professors and an associate professor of different departments of BSMMU were dismissed on Tuesday for their alleged political affiliation. University Registrar Abdul Gafur who served the termination letter to those teachers told The Daily Star the 11 were relieved of their jobs because their appointments flouted the Public Servants (retirements) Act, 1974 that prohibits recruitment of retired government officials as permanent employees. Prof Akram Hossain, Chief Estate Officer of BSMMU said that they received the legal notice on Wednesday morning.BSMMU is overstaffed with 3,600 employees, including doctors and nurses in spite of the fact that the number of authorised posts is only 1,600.Earlier, on March 22 the then BSMMU vice chancellor Prof Nazrul Islam, Pro-VCs Choudhury Ali Kawser and Mohammed Kamal, and treasurer Ruhul Amin Miah resigned following an order from the health ministryThe government later appointed Dr Pran Gopal Dutta as the vice chancellor of BSMMU. Pran Gopal belongs to pro-Awami League doctors' forum Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad and he is personal physician of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Besides, Prof AKM Anisul Haque of Neuro-medicine and Prof Dr Mohammad Shahidullah of Neonatology were appointed as pro-vice chancellors while Prof Dr Moazzem Hossain of Child Nephrology was made treasurer.
Leaders of pro-BNP doctors' wing Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) demanded immediate cancellation of the dismissal order of 11 doctors, unconditional release of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Secretary General AZM Zahid Hossain before BMA election scheduled to be held in November. They also demanded immediate cancellation of all DAB leaders' transfer orders issued by the Awami League government in past nine months. SM Rafiqul Islam Bacchu, DAB acting secretary general read out a written statement at the press conference at National Press Club yesterday.DAB President Prof AKM Azizul Haque also called upon the health minister to resign his political position as president of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad to create a congenial atmosphere for BMA election.

We are simply shocked in this political victimisation. On the one hand they are appointing the oro-Awami League doctors in all vantage places on the other they are removing other physitians who belong to other doctors association. We do not think belonging  to any professional association as wrong as longas they do not act in motivated political way When these associations are not unlawful why only members of DAB and would be penalised in diverse ways, at the same time rewarding  members of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad. All these are too much.In civil service and professional appointment politicisation has reached a new hihg point. We ask the present and future governments to bury such factionalism and politicisation. We ask the government to cancel the dismissal orders of these doctors.

[mukto-mona] India's Drought Is Worst Since 1972

We will reach a situation in which despite economic growth, we unable to meet our basic needs due to food shortage

India's Drought Is Worst Since 1972

01 Oct 2009:

Drought in India is Worst Since 1972, Government Says

With India's four-month monsoon season now officially over, the nation's meteorological department has announced that the country is experiencing the worst drought in 37 years, with rains 23 percent below normal. Especially hard-hit have been the region's major rice- and cereal-growing regions in the

northern and western states of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, where rains this year were 36 percent below normal. That region is also rapidly depleting its underground water supplies, as farmers with inexpensive diesel pumps extract irrigation water at an unsustainable rate, a trend that scientists warn could threaten Indian agriculture in the coming decades. The Indian government says the country has 52 million tons of wheat and rice in reserve, enough to last a year. But the drought and feeble monsoon rains have caused economic hardship for many of the 600 million Indians who still depend on agriculture for their livelihood.

[mukto-mona] Pipelineistan

Written by Pepe Escobar ... ...

Here is a travelogue you will not find elsewhere, eminating from those lands shrouded by war and conflicting history and geopolitics.  I had sent it on to Richard M. Eaton, the eminent historian specializing on South Asian Islamic history, who has a deep knowledge of the area and the current messy realpolitics.  His comments are pasted below:

http://www.truthout.org/032509C

Dear Farida,

Very good to hear from you. Pepe Escobar is one of my favorite reporters,
since he's on to something very important that is totally missed in America's
mainline media -- not surprisingly, of course.
He did need a map, however.

He should also have made it explicit that the whole reason for the war in
Afghanistan is to facilitate TAPI -- the pipeline from Turkmenistan to
Pakistan (and maybe India) that must run through Afghanistan. And the reason for THAT
pipeline, of course, is to deny Iran its own pipeline to Pakistan and India
(IPI). And the reason for denying Iran is that Iran continues to be the ONLY
country in the region that publically opposses Israel's expansionist plans to
colonize the West Bank. That is to say, these wars are not only about
oil; the geostrategic imperative of isolating and punishing Iran because of its candor
over Palestine/Israel is a huge part of the mix.

[ALOCHONA] RE: 5 Indian advisers in BTRC

Dear fellows:

If anybody sees a problem in this governmental contractual strategy for the effective functioning of the BTRC, then there can be a two-step solution: One is to shut the big-mouth media like "AmarDesh", "amardeshbd", etc., down for the sake of national security and stability of the State-affairs. The second step of the measure can be to place a sanction against public opinion and let the nationally sensitive security operations be operated by our most reliable savior big brother India. After all, majority of the freedom-loving, self-reliant, patriotic and secular Bangladeshi nationals are in deep debts for their lives, freedom and honor to the original owner of the land, the 'Bharat-Mata'.  The so-called miniature Bangladeshi brats should think thrice before saying anything about Bharat's "Strategy to save Bangladesh.

What will happen after 2021 when we will just have gotten the Digital Bangla (the Land & Language) but submerged by the holy water of the Bay of Bengal if our big brothers do not come to provide us shelter then????? Prostrating at the feet of the Bharat-Mata' would be a much better behavior than protesting to the G-7 feet against the calamities of the climate-change. I will not worry too much about food and clothing because we are already used to starving by practicing Ramadan; and then, we will get quite used to not-wearing cloths, specially our women will be quite liberated from the infamous "Hijabisation" and other foreign-origin Islamic cultural-coverings. Of course ATN, BVISION, CH-I, ETV, NTV and many others are trying their best to liberate women and the nation that was in cultural slavery for centuries.  Thanks god we have these TV channels that alone may save our children, grand-children, and many more.

About language, by 2021 Bangladesh will evolve a sacred new language which will not need any specific pronunciation, grammatical obligation, restricted vocabulary, but will be free from the barbarian conspirator Arabic words like "Allah"; and then only the purified language will be legitimately called "Bangla" for which about four million people gave their lives, one million in 1947 through 1952, and the other three millions in 1971. Thanks god, the Mother saved us from the Dracula teeth of the Pakistani Hyenas in 1971, March through December; otherwise the death toll would have been such that any of us would not have to live today to beg for some of the aristocratically expensive white grains called 'Sugar", a rare-kind of white fish called 'Ill-sha' or 'Hilsha', and the holy water of the Ganges. What do you think???????????
Sincerely,
MJ

[mukto-mona] Fw: Evolution education update: October 2, 2009

Subject: Evolution education update: October 2, 2009
To: ncse-news@googlegroups.com
Date: Friday, October 2, 2009, 9:55 PM

Dear Friends of NCSE,

More bad news from Louisiana as the state continues to implement the
so-called Louisiana Science Education Act. Meanwhile, Judge Jones is
honored by the Geological Society of America, a new publication from
Americans United for Separation of Church and State summarizes the law
governing religion and the public schools, and a chance to hear
Jonathan Weiner discuss variation on-line.

MORE BAD NEWS FROM LOUISIANA

The Louisiana Science Education Act opened the door for creationism to
be taught in the state's public schools, and now the Board of
Elementary and Secondary Education is propping the door open, the
Louisiana Coalition for Science charges. In a September 28, 2009,
press release, the LCS noted, "On September 16, the Board of
Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) ignored the recommendations
of science education professionals in the Louisiana Department of
Education (DOE) and allowed the Louisiana Family Forum (LFF), a
Religious Right lobbying group, to dictate the procedure concerning
complaints about creationist supplementary materials used in public
school science classes under the 2008 Louisiana Science Education Act
(LSEA)."

Enacted in June 2008 over the protests of scientists and educators
across the state and around the country, the LSEA (enacted as
Louisiana Revised Statutes 17:285.1) provides that "A teacher shall
teach the material presented in the standard textbook supplied by the
school system and thereafter may use supplemental textbooks and other
instructional materials to help students understand, analyze,
critique, and review scientific theories in an objective manner, as
permitted by the city, parish, or other local public school board
unless otherwise prohibited by the State Board of Elementary and
Secondary Education."

Subsequently, in January 2009, BESE adopted a policy about what types
of supplementary classroom materials will, and will not, be allowable
under the LSEA. While the policy echoes the LSEA's requirement that
such materials "not promote any religious doctrine, promote
discrimination for or against a particular set of religious beliefs,
or promote discrimination for or against religion or nonreligion," a
provision that "materials that teach creationism or intelligent design
or that advance the religious belief that a supernatural being created
humankind shall be prohibited for use in science class" was deleted,
according to a report from the Associated Press (January 15, 2009).

Unaddressed by the policy, however, was the question of how to handle
complaints about inappropriate supplementary materials. The Baton
Rouge Advocate (September 17, 2009) reported, "The department [of
education] recommended that any complaints undergo an initial review
by a three-member panel named by the agency, then go to the state
board for a final decision." But a BESE committee revised the
procedure so that "two reviewers will be named by the department to
review the science materials in question as well as one reviewer each
named by the challenger, the school and the publisher" of the
challenged materials.

Thus, the Advocate summarized, "people bothered by materials in a
science classroom could file a complaint with the state Department of
Education. A hearing would then be set where each side could tell its
story. Reviewers, who are supposed to be experts, can ask questions.
The five reviewers would file reports on whether the materials violate
the rules. The department can also make a recommendation. The state
board would then make a final decision." There are conflicting reports
about whether the policy was adopted by BESE at its September meeting
or whether it will be considered for adoption by the BESE at its
October meeting.

In any case, the policy is seriously flawed, according to the
Louisiana Coalition for Science: "There is no guarantee that the three
non-DOE reviewers, especially the school district's and the
publisher's appointees, will have the requisite expertise to evaluate
contested materials. A school district that permits the use of
creationist materials is likely to choose a creationist reviewer. The
publisher of creationist materials is virtually certain to choose a
creationist. ... In short, as BESE's complaint procedure is now
drafted, DOE's expert reviewers will be in the minority, and DOE staff
will not be allowed to independently assess the reviewers' reports but
must instead transfer the reports directly to BESE for evaluation."

JUDGE JONES HONORED BY GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA

Judge John E. Jones III, who presided over Kitzmiller v. Dover, the
2005 case establishing the unconstitutionality of teaching
"intelligent design" creationism in the public schools, will receive
the Geological Society of America's President's Medal for 2009,
according to a September 28, 2009, press release from the GSA. "It is
particularly fitting that Judge Jones receive this medal in 2009, the
bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, whose work forms the basis
of modern evolutionary theory," said Judith Totman Parrish, the past
president of GSA. She added, "Using thorough analysis of the law,
in-depth analysis of the history and origin of intelligent design
theory and acute powers of reasoning, Judge Jones'[s] opinion
decisively laid to rest the notion that intelligent design should be
taught in science classes, alongside evolution, as an alternative
theory to the evolution of life."

Jones will receive his award on October 17, 2009, during the GSA's
annual meeting in Portland, Oregon. Two days later, he will
participate in a five-member panel discussion there on "Overcoming
Resistance to the Reality of Evolutionary Change in Nature," part of a
day-long 200th birthday celebration of Charles Darwin held in
conjunction with the meeting. Also participating will be Kevin Padian,
Professor of Integrative Biology and Curator, Museum of Paleontology,
University of California, Berkeley, and president of NCSE's board of
directors; Jeremy Jackson, Director, Center for Marine Biodiversity &
Conservation, Scripps Institution of Oceanography; Randy Olson, the
filmmaker behind Flock of Dodos: The Evolution-Intelligent Design
Circus; and Ray Troll, fish artist extraordinaire and coauthor of
Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway (Fulcrum, 2007).

RELIGION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

A new book published by Americans United for Separation of Church and
State offers educators and families detailed information about the law
governing religion and the public schools -- and the topic of teaching
evolution is not neglected. Chapter 4 of Religion in the Public
Schools: A Road Map for Avoiding Lawsuits and Respecting Parents'
Legal Rights, by Anne Marie Lofaso, a professor of law at West
Virginia University, contains a detailed review of the legal issues
surrounding the teaching of evolution. Its central points:

* Schools can neither outlaw the teaching of evolution nor give "equal
time" for discussion of evolution and "creation science"
* The theory of evolution meets the definition of science
* It is long settled that public schools cannot forbid the teaching of
evolution as part of their high school science curriculum
* It is equally well settled that public schools cannot compel the
teaching of creationism alongside evolution as part of the high school
science curriculum
* Public schools may not teach "intelligent design" alongside
evolution as part of the high school science curriculum
* Nor may public school teachers claim an "academic freedom" right to
teach about "intelligent design"
* Public schools may limit the extent to which students raise
religious evidence against evolution in science class discussion in
the same manner by which those schools limit other class discussions
* Creationism and intelligent design cannot be taught in public
schools, but objective, academic discussion about religion, such as
its role in history, is permissible in some contexts as long as the
approach is educational and not devotional

"Religion in the Public Schools effectively explains the ins and outs
of how religion should be handled in the school setting. A must-read
for parents and educators alike!" writes someone who should know --
Tammy Kitzmiller, the lead plaintiff in the 2005 case establishing the
unconstitutionality of teaching "intelligent design" creationism in
the public schools. Barbara Forrest, a member of NCSE's board of
directors, adds, "This book should be on the desk of every public
school teacher, principal, and school board member."
