[mukto-mona] A timely decision

A timely decision I am very delighted to know that the Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling which has made it mandatory for candidates in parliamentary elections to make their personal information public following a public interest litigation by three lawyers on May 24, 2005. People who run for parliament will have to provide the Election Commission with eight personal information including the candidates' academic qualification, sources of income, profession, assets, liabilities, bank balance and criminal records, if any.    Congratulations to the three lawyers, Abdul Momen Chowdhury, KM Zabir and M Zahirul Islam, who had filed the writ petition, and also to the eminent jurist Dr. Kamal Hossain who appeared for the petitioners.    Gopal Sengupta    Canada New Age requests readers to send letters and opinions to letters@newagebd.com, newage.feedback@gmail.com or 'Feedback', Holiday Building, 30 Tejgaon Industrial Area, Dhaka-1208.
