Dear Media friends,
Please find attached a report from Megh Pyne Abhiyan, a network of NGOs working in North Bihar. This is regarding a grave flood situation in Bihar after the breaching of an embankment of the Kosi River in Nepal on 18th August. After the breach the river has shifted its course nearly a 100 kms eastward from its earlier course. This is a highly unusual occurence, and has caused enormous damage. The report estimates that 2.5-3.0 million people are affected by the floods. 65,000 hectares of land are under water. Huge numbers of people are trapped by the waters, and there is an urgent need to rescue them before their water and food supplies run out. The district administration reports claim not a single human or lifestock loss, which is very far from the reality.
There is urgent need to apply pressure on the administration to face the grimness of the situation and respond appropriately. The report advocates the urgent mobilization of big motorized boats and airlifting through helicopters to save the stranded people.
