[ALOCHONA] Politicians are indeed mostly responsible for our country's miseries

Dear Alochoks

You might enjoy reading my recent letter in the New Age. I am sending it to you because I did not think it would get published given the 'goat and cow' referenceJ

'Nonsense!'

http://www.newagebd.com/2008/sep/13/oped.html#3

There is no cake to be seen and no high expectations of seeing it soon - let alone eating it. The writer RJM is right in his criticisms of the individual citizen and the electorate. But the electorate can only vote for the candidates that are placed before it. If the two major parties nominate a goat and a cow then a goat or a cow will be prime minister of Bangladesh no matter what. If we are to even dream of any cake we need the central committees of the AL and BNP to be completely changed. We have only just started to think that elected representatives should be accountable for the trust placed in them by the electorate! The political infrastructure that should help the electorate keep politicians in check has been hijacked and is instead used by politicians to keep the electorate in check. Politicians are indeed mostly responsible for our country's miseries. Unless of course we should let the politicians continue their nonsense politics and wait a couple of generations for the electorate to be fully enlightened and empowered. Our country, and our children, can't afford to wait that long.

Nonsense!

http://www.newagebd.com/2008/sep/11/oped.html#5

Ezajur Rahman (‘CEC sorry for past dealings with BNP’, September 9) once again puts the blame for his country’s misery on politicians.
The final responsibility, in a democracy, rests only with the electorate. In Bangladesh, corruption is tolerated and encouraged by the individual, as long as it works in his/her favour. It is only when decisions go against an individual that he suddenly adopts a moral stance, and decries ‘corruption’.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too, Ezajur…
