Rebel candidates rally against nomination

Rebel Awami League and BNP candidates and their supporters in places on Tuesday rallied seeking nomination while the top leaders remained busy making last-minute adjustments to nominations for the December 29 general polls.
After nominating candidates initially and instructing them to submit nomination papers, the parties were busy till Tuesday finalising the candidature which need to be completed before the scrutiny of nomination papers, sources in both the Awami League and the BNP said.
The parties have started issuing confirmation letters specifying the name of party candidates where the partiers earlier fielded more candidates than one.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party last night was busy finalising its candidates for constituencies where the party had initially fielded multiple candidates for the December 29 general elections.
The BNP has also planned to send alternative names [including names of some independent candidates], for constituencies where nomination papers of the party candidates are likely to be cancelled on legal grounds, to the returning officers concerned for consideration as alternative candidates [where necessary] of the party.

chairperson Khaleda Zia, were busy till 1:00am Wednesday to finalise the candidatures which must be completed before the scrutiny of nomination papers which starts today.
According to the Election Commission, BNP has more candidates than one in 39 electoral constituencies.
Unless BNP makes further changes today [Wednesday], the following 25 persons will be the party’s candidates for respective constituencies –

The top leaders of BNP were, however, not sure if the Election Commission would allocate the party’s election symbol [sheaf of paddy] to the candidates who had filed nominations as independent candidates, as the candidates of the party, according to sources close to the party chairperson.
The Jatiya Party is expected to announce the names of its 50 candidates today. The party’s secretary general Ruhul Amin Hawlader met with Awami League leaders at Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office.
About party chairman HM Ershad’s demand for the country’s presidency if the grand alliance is voted to power, Ruhul Amin said his party was adamant about it.
He said Jatiya Party had a gentleman’s agreement with the Awami League that Ershad would be made the president if the alliance was voted to power. ‘But this issue could be settled after the election.’
Awami League on the day also confirmed party nominations for the 26 constituencies where two candidates were primarily selected. Hasina distributed the final confirmation letters to the candidates at her Sudha Sadan residence.
The Election Commission has notified registered political parties and electoral alliances, through returning officers, that they had until December 4 to make a final decision on the names of candidates for 300 parliamentary seats.

In Faridpur, the supporters of BNP vice-chairman Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf formed a human chain and went on a token hunger strike in the town, demanding nomination for him for the Faridpur 3 constituency. The Jamaat secretary general, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid, was nominated as the alliance candidate for the constituency.
The Nagarkanda BNP president, KM Jahangir, also brother of the late BNP leader KM Obaidur Rahman, held a briefing protesting against the party nomination for the Faridpur 2 constituency. Obaid’s daughter Shyama Obaid has been nominated for the constituency.
