[ALOCHONA] AL-Govt’s BAKSALI Autocratic Spirit Sprouts to Unfold

AL falsely implicated, media bribed: Ashraful on Peelkhana probe report

Staff Reporter

LGRD Minister and Awami League (AL) spokesman Syed Ashraful Islam yesterday said that the reports submitted so far in connection with the BDR mutiny on February 25-26 was incomplete and motivated.

"The report has been prepared intentionally to implicate the AL leaders with this mutiny by hiding the facts and at least Tk 15 crore has been allocated to some media persons to make it credible before people," he alleged.

He made these comments while addressing a discussion meeting organised by the Bangladesh Awami Jubo League at the Engineers' Institution in the capital to mark Sheikh Hasina's homecoming day.

Referring to some newspaper reports he said, "The report drafted by a probe body has not mentioned the reason behind the mutiny and who were behind this. Besides this, the report has not investigated whether any militant groups or anti-liberation force was involved or not," he said.

He added that a BNP leader helped the BDR jawans to flee the spot easily on the day after the mutiny. But this was not stated in the report.

On the role of some local media he said, some quarters allocated Tk 15 crore for media to make the report credible. Some talk shows have already been telecast in this regard. But the government has enlisted the persons, who are attending these talk shows.

Speaking as special guest Agriculture Minister and AL presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury said that conspiracy was going on to derail the investigation of BDR mutiny from the mainstream. "But Sheikh Hasina-led government has the power to foil the conspiracy and bring the real masterminds under trial, she added.

She deeply condemned the report for implicating the AL leaders with this barbaric occurrence.

She said, "During the mutiny the culprits covered their mouth by red handkerchief. This was the symbol of three layers chain of command of militant members. But this was completely overlooked in the report."

Terming Sheikh Hasina daughter of peace, she said on May 17, 1981 Sheikh Hasina had returned home from exile risking her life with the aim to materialise the dreams of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and bring smiles to the faces of the hapless people. But the ill-motivated section had tried to kill her several times to destroy democracy in the country and the conspiracy is on.

She also urged the people, leaders and activists of the party to remain alert to resist these conspiracies with a strong hand and to get prepared for facing any eventuality.

LGRD State Minister and Jubo League Chairman Jahangir Kabir Nanak chaired the meeting, while Jubo League General Secretary Mirza Azam, journalist Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, AL advisory committee member Dr. AK Azad Chowdhury, among others, also spoke.
