Benapole Port Handling Workers Union observed a half-day strike at the land port from dawn to 1:00 pm on Sunday in protest against the attack on its office by the student wing of the ruling Awami League on May Day.
Mohshin Milon, a cost and freight agent at the port, told New Age that export-import activities at the port were hampered till 1:00 pm on Sunday because of the strike.
Rashed Mia, general secretary of the union, told journalists that a group of BCL workers had attacked the union office on May 1 during a programme on the occasion of May Day. ‘The BCL workers assaulted at least 5 members of the union including our leaders. They also ransacked our office’, he added.
After the attack, the union leaders decided to observe strike for an indefinite period till the offenders are punished.
After getting the assurance from C&F association, the workers of the union called off the strike.
