Protesters clash with police in front of Indian HC Over two dozens of protestors including women Sunday tried to gate crash the Indian High Commission office in Dhaka demanding suspension of the cross- border Tipaimukh Dam project.(BSS) Police and witnesses said the incident erupted a brief clash with police, leaving half a dozen injured. They said some 30 protestors belonging to little known left- leaning youth group "Lamp Post" tried to enter into the high commission complex at posh Gulshan area, chanting slogans also demanding withdrawal of Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty and protesting "killings of Bangladeshis" in frontier villages by the Border Security Force (BSF). "Extra policemen immediately rushed to the scene as the protestors clashed with the on-duty policemen and security guards using their placards as sticks when police retaliated with batons," police sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam, who was familiar with the situation, told BSS. He said the protestors fled the scene while police arrested two of their leaders Ashish Koraia and Golam Mohammad Prince. The clash also left three of the policemen injured. A police spokesman later said a case was filed against 30 people including the two arrested leaders for their "attempts to intrude into the high commission using force and prevent policemen from discharging their duties". Indian High Commission officials declined to comment on the incident.. |
