[ALOCHONA] Bangladesh army: cause of trouble!!

Bangladesh army: cause of trouble!!

By Yasmeen Sultana, USA

As per government directives Bangladesh Army is being withdrawn from the Chittatong Hill Tracts! It is viewed as the execution of the so-called 'Peace Agreement' signed between the BD government and the 'renegade' Shantu Larma. The ruling party leaders view this withdrawl as a huge achievement in bringing peace to the troubled region, they are speaking loudly in favor of the ill-thought decision of the current BD government. However, the commanding officer of the BD army stationed in the area said that it was not a withdrwal, but a repositioning of the army units. Like most common citizens of the country I am a bit confused by the comments of the army official. To cap off the controversy the Attorney General, the number one law officer of the country, said that peace and discipline is coming back to the region after the withdrawl of BD army from the region. I was really stunned to read his comments.

How could the Attorney General make such assertions? Does he want to tell the whole world that the BD army is worthless, it is capable of creating troubles only? My question is 'what makes our attorney general' make such statements? Is it a part of the Awami-Indian conspiracy to destroy the army? As everybody knows 'Sheikh Mujib' did not have faith in the army. That's why he created 'Rakhkhi Bahini'. It is widely believed that Sheikh Mujib created the paramilitary force to protect him, his family, and the loyal Awami League leaders. Tofael Ahmed, a loyal disciple of his, was given the supervisory role over Rakhkhi Bahini. Sheikh Jamal, his second son, was being groomed to become the chief of the Rakhkhi Bahini.

But why did Sheikh Mujib dislike the army? Did he not know that many officers and jawans of the BD army deserted the Pakistan army (risking their lives) and joined the war of liberation? One great soldier (at that time a major in the Pakistan army) declared Independence from Pakistan after the Pakistan army crackdown on civilians in the night of 25th March 1971. Other patriotic officers led Gen. MAG Osmani formed the backbone of the liberation army. Is there anybody in the world who can say that Bangladesh would have become liberated if the former bengali officers and soldiers did not take join the war of liberation? The answer is obviously 'NO'.

Many believe that it was the Indian government (advised by RAW) recommended the formation of Rakhkhi Bahini. Their first goal was to make sure that BD army did never become strong. That way India could do whatever they wanted to do with Bangladesh like infiltrating their own troops into the soil of Bangladesh at will. The second goal was to make sure that no opposition party did ever pose any threat to the rule of Sheikh Mujib and his party. However, their dream never came true. On the contrary Sheikh Mujib was killed by a group of patriotic army personnel, thus eliminating the possibilty of making Bangladesh a vassal state (of India).

However, India did not abandon its plans. In fact they channeled more resources and man power to reach its goal after finding out that Bangladesh was slowly marching towards economic reliance, getting International Acclaim for its policies, both in the domestic and international arena. They thought that the only way choice left for them (to stop the forward march of Bangladesh) was to kill Ziaur Rahman. They managed to do that successfully. But they had to wait for another 11 years before they could put Sheikh Hasina to power. They succeeded partially in carrying through their agenda during Sheikh Hasina's tenure (1996 - 2001).

India was totally devastated to find that people had returned Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to power in 2001. They also discovered that a young leader, Tareque Rahman (son of Ziaur Rahman), played a significant role in bringing BNP back to power. Again India lost the cance to carry out its mission. So, they orchestrated a propaganda campaign against Tareque Rahman, Khaleda Zia, etc. trying to portray them as looters of government money. At their directives chaos was created in the industrial sector of the in order to ruin the economy .

But they found out that without destroying the army they would not be able to fulfill their mission. So, they planted their agents in the BD army. Their agents purchased a section of the top brass including Gen. Moeen in no time. They made Moeen rule the country from behind. Moeen made sure that BNP did not come back to power. At the same time he involved the army in many controversial activities in order to tarnish its image. However, the vast majority of the army personnel carried out their responsibilities as professionals. India was not pleased at all. So, they arranged the brutal killings in the BDR headquarters so that they could weaken both the BDR and the army. But their main objective was to buy a very bad name for the BD army. Unfortunately they could not accomplish much because of the resolve of the army officers to preserve the institution.

The other alternative left for India and its associates is to portray BD army as an inefficient force, capable of no good deeeds, etc. The current Attorney General's comments reflect Indian wishes. May Allah save the nation!
