[ALOCHONA] Highway death and our supreme leaders

For the first time we went to Cox's Bazar, Rangamati and couldn't believe our eyes that this is Bangladesh, my country. The terrain, green hills, lake all were amazing. It was hot and humid (good the overdue rain was not pouring during August) yet we enjoyed it with lots of pleasant surprises.

But hurdles and risks were there too. Death of Saifur Rahman reminded me anew the risk specially on the road.

Everyday many people get killed on the road as these arterial roads are narrow and without any traffic rules. Buses or trucks will narrowly pass with such a speed, often I jump from the seat.

Dhaka Chittagong high way, the busiest and economically important corridor, is the same like all others. It is too risky, too time consuming and costly to ply on this high way.

In Bangladesh moving people waste 50 to 60 percent of their travel time on the road and in the jam. It is difficult to understand why nothing has been done to avert the fatality of the accident and death of thousands every year and why burdening the nation with increasing freight cost on the consumables.

From Kanchpur to Dhaka it took us around 2 hours and that is also in an abysmal condition. And it happens 365 days in a year.

In Dhaka it is even terrible, you can not reach Office or Hospital on time(I guess every one got used to). It is not only that people do not follow any rules as they are desperate to reach but absence of minimum of the facility is the root cause.

Why no governments looked into the matter seriously during last 37 years? Prime minister arrives in the meeting late and with an ear to ear grin says I was stuck in a jam.

How much would have it cost to put up a separator with two lanes in each side atleast? Main highways could have been better. The financing is not an issue, BOT, BOO or PPP all are there what is not there is 'willingness to resolve the matter'.

Saifur Rahman's death should or aught to awake the supreme leaders of this beautiful land to make decision quick to save lives than tall talking and mourning.
